Apple unveiled new models of its iPad and a new M4 chip during a pre-taped event on Tuesday. “This is the biggest day for iPad since its introduction,” CEO Tim Cook declared.

Max Zahn for ABC News:

The announcement exemplified the current strategy at Apple: Rely on new models of its signature items, rather than transition to the next big product, analysts told ABC News.

While the world’s second-largest company, in terms of market capitalization, risks dependence on longstanding products in a competitive sector, analysts say the approach allows Apple to capitalize upon its loyal customer base and popular devices while it develops new products like Apple Vision Pro…

MacDailyNews Take: Nope, not a “new” product:

Further, Apple has remained largely quiet in the industry-wide race toward artificial intelligence technologies and products.

Many analysts are looking ahead to the Worldwide Developers Conference next month, when Apple is expected to make a “major AI announcement,” Dan Ives, a managing director of equity research at the investment firm Wedbush, said in a note to investors that was shared with ABC News…

Still, the strategy of improving pre-existing products rather than introducing new ones leaves Apple’s long-term vision somewhat unclear, [Ben Bajarin, an analyst at research firm Creative Strategies] said… In the meantime, Bajarin said, Apple will likely draw upon its massive customer base and potential AI-driven product upgrades to stabilize sales.

MacDailyNews Take: The good news is that the average age of outgoing CEOs across the S&P 1500 is 61.6 and Tim Cook will turn 64 on November 1st. 🕚

“Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future.” – John F. Kennedy

Clearly, Apple is not as innovative as it was under Steve Jobs who even started the company’s work on Apple Silicon, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro, but, thanks to Jobs and Cook’s subsequent management of iterations of products and services conceived during Jobs’ tenure, including the retail store buildout which is responsible for a significant portion of Apple’s growth, the company now has more than enough money to make up for Cook’s lack of vision.MacDailyNews, April 23, 2024

Tim’s not a product person, per se. – Steve Jobs

Until it gets another visionary leader (fingers crossed; Apple’s history has shown – cough, Sculley, Spindler, cough – that the next CEO could be far, far worse than the very competent caretaker Cook), Apple can afford to miss things like generative AI – which they clearly did – and then use its huge war chest to catch up – which they’re doing right now (fun times and 80-hour weeks inside Apple Park!) – and, hopefully, surpass rivals (or at least be as good). Apple will very likely unveil their catch-up work within months (this June at WWDC 2024) in iPhones (and iPads, Apple Watches, etc.) with built-in on-device generative AI and other new AI-driven features.MacDailyNews, February 14, 2024
