“Bad Monkey” embodies Florida through and through — set in the Keys, adapted from Carl Hiaasen’s novel, and with its first season fully filmed on location in the state.

That’s shifting for Season 2.

The Apple TV+ series starring Vince Vaughn is relocating principal production to California, drawn by a substantial $20.6 million tax credit from the California Film Commission. While the bulk of filming (including interiors and soundstage work) will take place in the Los Angeles area, some exterior shots are expected to return to Florida to preserve the story’s authentic Florida Keys vibe.

Gene Maddaus for Variety:
‎

The tax allocation was one of 10 announced Wednesday, totaling $108.6 million.

California awards $330 million a year in tax credits to film and TV shows. Gov. Gavin Newsom said in October he will push to increase it to $750 million a year in the next budget, as crews continue to struggle with a lackluster recovery from the 2023 strikes.

“We are working hard to keep productions filming in California,” said Colleen Bell, the director of the California Film Commission, in a press release…

Another Apple TV+ show, “Imperfect Women,” will also get a tax credit to film in Los Angeles. That show, starring Kerry Washington and Elisabeth Moss, is produced by 20th Television and will get $12.5 million.

Apple Studios is also getting another $10.7 million to film an untitled TV series.

Disney was the big winner this round, with four projects totaling $43.5 million in tax credits.

Also on the list is “L.A. Nights,” a show from HBO that snagged $19.4 million.

‎
MacDailyNews Note: California is facing an estimated $17.7 billion budget deficit. In contrast, Florida has a surplus of approximately $15.7 billion.

Cupertino, California, has resolved a contentious sales tax dispute with Apple, agreeing to pay the company $12.1 million.

The settlement, finalized in March 2025 and approved by the City Council, stems from a 1998 agreement where Apple allocated all California online sales to Cupertino, allowing the city to collect a 1% share of the state’s 7.25% sales tax. In return, Cupertino rebated about a third of this revenue to Apple, a deal that fueled city services but drew scrutiny as Apple’s digital sales soared.

A 2023 audit by the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) ruled that sales tax should be distributed based on purchase delivery locations, not Apple’s headquarters. Initially, Cupertino faced repaying $56.5 million, prompting budget cuts affecting staff and community programs. A 2024 settlement allowed the city to retain $74.5 million in collected revenue, with the $12.1 million refund to Apple drawn from its general fund, covering taxes from January 2023 to June 2024.

This case highlights the evolving landscape of digital tax policies and may set a precedent for other California municipalities with similar corporate agreements. While the refund is minor for Apple, it signals potential shifts in how tech giants report online sales.

MacDailyNews Take: For perspective, Apple’s estimated average daily expenditure is approximately $761 million.

California Governor Gavin Newsom this week recommended former Apple CEO Steve Jobs for the $1 American Innovation Coin for the State of California that will be minted by the U.S. Mint.

Each state is able to create a unique coin recognizing an innovation or innovator from their region as part of the Innovation Coin Program that was launched in 2018.

Newsom said that Steve Jobs “encapsulates the unique brand of innovation that California runs on.”

Jobs’ legacy spans industries and products: Jobs was the co-founder and CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, bringing to life the world’s first fully computer-animated feature: “Toy Story.” But even that legacy-defining achievement is surpassed by his work as co-founder and two-time CEO of Apple, launching several revolutionary computers, including Apple II – the first mass-produced microcomputer – and Macintosh – the first mass-market personal computer that included a graphic display, so users could see what they were working on.

The goal, according to Jobs, was to “bridge the gap between sophisticated technology and ‘the rest of us’ who make up most of humanity…to make complex technology easy to use and fun to use.” That approach led to the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, devices that refined existing technology to make it more precise, more intuitive, and more functional.

By focusing on who he was innovating for – other people – Jobs was able to use technology to connect people to each other and to the broader world, bringing people onto the same level by providing them with equal access. And that approach was built on a willingness to try new ideas and push the boundaries of what was possible – an approach that embodies the California spirit.

California’s nomination has been presented to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC), which will take design recommendations to the Treasury Secretary for final approval. The CCAC decided to recommend a coin with Steve Jobs in his iconic turtleneck and glasses, but the design is not finalized and could be updated before the coin is made.

The coin is expected to be produced and made available in 2026.

In the annals of technological history, few companies have left as indelible a mark as Apple Inc. Founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne in 1976, Apple has revolutionized the world of computing, communication, and entertainment. The journey of Apple began with the humble Apple I, a computer that would lay the foundation for the tech giant’s future innovations.

Genesis of the Apple I

The Visionaries: Jobs and Wozniak

Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, two visionaries driven by a passion for technology, came together to create what would become the Apple I. Wozniak, an engineering wizard, designed the computer, while Jobs, the charismatic leader, recognized its potential to change the world.

The Birth of Apple Computer, Inc.

On April 1, 1976, Apple Computer, Inc. was born in the garage of Jobs’ parents’ house in Los Altos, California. With an initial investment of $1,300, the duo began assembling the first batch of Apple I computers.

The Apple I: A Game-Changer

Technical Specifications

The Apple I was a minimalist masterpiece, featuring a microprocessor, memory, and a built-in BASIC programming language. Its technical specifications included:

Processor: MOS Technology 6502

Memory: 4 KB (expandable to 8 KB or 48 KB)

Display: None (connected to a television set)

Input/Output: Cassette tape interface for loading and saving programs

Impact on Computing

Despite its rudimentary design, the Apple I sparked a revolution in personal computing. Its user-friendly interface and affordability appealed to hobbyists and early adopters, democratizing access to technology.

The Birth of the Homebrew Computer Club

The Homebrew Computer Club, a gathering of computer enthusiasts in Silicon Valley, played a crucial role in popularizing the Apple I. Wozniak showcased the prototype at one of the club’s meetings, garnering attention and inspiring others to delve into computer programming.

Legacy and Enduring Influence

Commercial Success

Despite selling only a few hundred units, the Apple I laid the groundwork for Apple’s future success. Its commercial viability attracted investors, leading to the release of subsequent models like the Apple II, which catapulted the company into the mainstream.

Cultural Impact

Beyond its technological significance, the Apple I left an enduring cultural legacy. It embodied the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship that defines Silicon Valley, inspiring generations of inventors and entrepreneurs to chase their dreams.

Collectors’ Item

Today, the Apple I is a coveted collectors’ item, with pristine examples fetching six-figure sums at auctions. Its scarcity and historical significance make it a symbol of the dawn of the digital age.

Conclusion

The Apple I may have been modest in its beginnings, but its impact on the world cannot be overstated. From its humble origins in a garage to its status as a cultural icon, the Apple I laid the foundation for one of the most influential companies in history. As we look back on the birth of the Apple Computer in 1976, we are reminded of the power of vision, innovation, and relentless pursuit of excellence that continue to drive technological progress today.

This week, Apple announced California driver’s licenses and state IDs can now be added to Apple Wallet, enabling residents to seamlessly and securely add and present their IDs using iPhone or Apple Watch. The launch of California driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet will roll out as part of the California DMV’s broader mobile driver’s license (mDL) pilot program, which launched last year and is limited to 1.5 million participants.

“Enabling California residents to seamlessly add and present their IDs with their iPhone or Apple Watch represents a significant step in replacing the physical wallet with a more secure and private digital wallet,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, in a statement. “The launch also represents an important milestone in the rollout of IDs in Apple Wallet. Not only is California one of the largest states in the U.S., but it’s also our own backyard, and we’re excited to bring an easy and transparent way to present IDs in our home state.”

The addition of IDs in Wallet in California follows the recent launch in Hawaii and Ohio, which join Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland. Additionally, Montana, New Mexico, and West Virginia have signed on to adopt IDs in Wallet. Japan has also signed on to bring My Number Card to Wallet, which will mark the first international expansion of IDs in Wallet.

Adding an ID in Apple Wallet

Adding a license or state ID to Apple Wallet can be done in a few easy steps. Residents can tap the Add (+) button at the top of the screen in Wallet on their iPhone, select “Driver’s License or State ID,” and follow the onscreen instructions to start the setup and verification process.

The customer will be asked to use their iPhone to scan their physical driver’s license or state ID card and take a selfie, which will be securely provided to the issuing state for verification. As an additional security step, users will also be prompted to complete a series of facial and head movements during the setup process. Once verified by the issuing state, the customer’s ID or driver’s license will be added to Wallet.

Using an ID in Apple Wallet

Users can securely present their IDs in Apple Wallet in person and in apps to show proof of age or identity.

To present an ID in person, users can go to Apple Wallet and select their ID in Apple Wallet. From there, they can hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near an identity reader, review the specific information being requested, and use Face ID or Touch ID to authenticate. Today, users can present their ID in Apple Wallet at select TSA checkpoints, businesses, and venues, in addition to Apple Store locations across the U.S. for order pickup, Genius Bar appointments, and more. Users can also present their IDs in Apple Wallet to businesses using apps such as Tap2iD Mobile, VeriScan, and Mobile ID Verify, for in-person age verification. These apps leverage Apple’s ID Verifier API to securely and privately accept mobile driver’s licenses and ID cards — right on iPhone, no additional hardware needed.

Soon, users will also be able to present their ID in Apple Wallet in person for select services like CLEAR for member enrollment.

To present an ID in Apple Wallet in apps, users can select the “Verify with Apple Wallet” or “Continue with Apple Wallet” button. From there, they can review the specific information being requested, and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID before information is shared. Today, users can present their ID in Apple Wallet in select apps, including Turo, with additional partners such as CLEAR, MyChart, and Uber Eats coming soon.

Presenting an ID in a Secure, Private Way

IDs in Apple Wallet use the privacy and security features that are built into Apple devices to help protect a user’s identity and personal information. When adding an ID to Apple Wallet, the state-issuing authority receives only the information it needs to approve or deny the request.

Once an ID is added to Apple Wallet, the information is encrypted on a user’s device, so others — including Apple — cannot access it unless a user chooses to present it. Apple and the state-issuing authority do not know when or to whom a user presents their driver’s license or state ID. A user’s presentment history is encrypted and stored only on their device, and Apple cannot see or access this information.

When presenting an ID in Apple Wallet, only the information needed for the transaction is presented, and the user has the opportunity to review and authorize the information being requested with Face ID or Touch ID before it is shared. Users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to present their ID.

Californians will soon be able to add their driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet, providing a seamless and secure way to present driver’s licenses or state IDs using just an iPhone or Apple Watch.

“We’re excited to be working with the state of California to bring IDs in Apple Wallet to Apple’s home state soon, and provide residents with an easy, secure, and private way to present their California driver’s license and state ID in person and in app using Apple Wallet,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. “Whether using IDs in Apple Wallet to breeze through travel, or to securely verify age or identity at businesses, California driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet make ID presentment seamless — all with the security built into iPhone and Apple Watch.”

When adding an ID to Apple Wallet, the state-issuing authority receives only information they need to approve or deny adding the driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet.

When presenting a driver’s license and state ID in Apple Wallet, only the information needed for the transaction is presented, and users will need to review and authorize using Face ID or Touch ID before the information is shared. Users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to present their ID.

A user’s ID information is encrypted and stored only on their device, so others, including Apple, cannot access it unless a user chooses to present it. Apple and the state-issuing authority do not know when or where or with whom a user presents their driver’s license or state ID, and Apple doesn’t see or retain any presentment information that can be tied back to a user. If a user misplaces their iPhone or Apple Watch, they can use the Find My app to lock their device and help locate it, or remotely erase it.
