Apple is gearing up to support voice-controlled AI apps from third-party developers in CarPlay for the first time, allowing users to interact with AI chatbots directly through the car’s interface, Mark Gurman reports for Bloomberg News.

The company plans to roll out this capability in the coming months, enabling providers to launch dedicated CarPlay versions of their apps featuring voice-control functionality. However, Apple will not permit these third-party apps to replace the Siri button or override the wake word for invoking the assistant; users will instead have to manually open the desired app to engage its voice mode.

Mark Gurman for Bloomberg News:
‎

The change marks a strategic shift for Apple, which until now has only allowed its own Siri assistant as a voice-control option within its popular vehicle infotainment software. With the move, AI providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic PBC, and Alphabet Inc.’s Google will be able to release CarPlay versions of their apps that include a voice-control mode.

That means a driver could, say, ask ChatGPT for restaurant recommendations without taking their hands off the wheel. Apple customers have been clamoring for such an option for months, but there’s no guarantee that outside developers will follow through and take advantage of the capability.

There will still be limits. Apple won’t let users replace the Siri button on CarPlay or the wake word that summons the service. Instead, users will need to open the app to activate the third-party voice control, the people said.

Developers will be able to design their apps so voice mode launches automatically when the app is opened, which should help make it more convenient to use.

‎
MacDailyNews Take: We’ll replace Siri with Grok on Day One. Currently, you can use the <a href=https://macdailynews.com/2026/02/09/apple-said-to-allow-outside-voice-controlled-ai-chatbots-in-carplay/
Grok">Grok app on your iPhone while it is connected to CarPlay, it does not appear as a native app on the CarPlay screen, nor does it currently support voice commands through the native vehicle steering wheel button in a typical CarPlay setup.

Apple is planning to bring new AI features to CarPlay, reports Bloomberg. Apple will allow third-party chatbot apps to integrate with ‌CarPlay‌, so AI services like Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT will be accessible in the car for the first time

Apple is planning to bring new AI features to CarPlay, reports Bloomberg. Apple will allow third-party chatbot apps to integrate with ‌CarPlay‌, so AI services like Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT will be accessible in the car for the first time.

‌CarPlay‌ already supports third-party apps, but the types of apps that are supported are limited. Companies like Anthropic and OpenAI aren’t currently able to create ‌CarPlay‌ apps, so users are limited to using Siri voice controls in the vehicle.

With the change, ‌CarPlay‌ users will be able to access apps like ChatGPT to ask questions hands-free, though the apps won’t be able to control vehicle or iPhone functions. Third-party AI voice apps will not be accessible via a wake word and won’t replace ‌Siri‌, so users will need to open an app to get access to a chatbot. App developers will be able to design in-car experiences that will launch a voice-based chat mode when the app is opened, which will streamline the process.

Apple is planning to support third-party AI apps “within the coming months,” which could align with when the company’s smarter version of ‌Siri‌ is set to launch. With iOS 26.4, Apple is debuting a more personalized version of ‌Siri‌ that uses large language models.

‌Siri‌ will be able to answer complex questions, complete multi-step tasks, maintain continuity, and do more in and between apps. The personal assistant is also set to gain a World Knowledge Answers feature, allowing it to search the web and summarize information from websites.

Later in iOS 27, ‌Siri‌ will get full chatbot capabilities, allowing it to better compete with Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT.

Last year, Apple launched CarPlay Ultra, the long-awaited next-generation version of its CarPlay software system for vehicles. Nearly nine months later, CarPlay Ultra is still limited to Aston Martin’s latest luxury vehicles, but that should change fairly soon.

In May 2025, Apple said many other vehicle brands planned to offer CarPlay Ultra, including Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. At the time, it said CarPlay Ultra would begin expanding to more vehicles around the world “in the next 12 months.”

In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said he was told that CarPlay Ultra will come to at least one major new Hyundai or Kia vehicle model “in the second half of this year.” It is unclear if he is referring to Hyundai’s upcoming IONIQ 3, as previously reported, or if it will be a different model.

CarPlay Ultra features deeper integration with a vehicle’s instrument cluster and systems, built-in apps for radio and climate controls, rear-view camera feed support, and more. The connected iPhone provides app-related data, while the vehicle provides information like the current speed, fuel level, tire pressure, engine temperature, and more.

The interface is tailored to each vehicle model and automaker’s identity, and drivers can choose from various preset design options.

BMW, Ford, and Rivian are among the brands that have publicly downplayed CarPlay Ultra, while General Motors controversially ditched the regular version of CarPlay in its new electric vehicles, so it is likely to pass on CarPlay Ultra too. That means vehicles from brands like Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC are likely out of the running.

It is improbable that Tesla would offer CarPlay Ultra either, but it is reportedly working on offering the regular version of CarPlay in a major pivot.

Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. has launched SPHERA, described as the world’s first aftermarket Spatial Audio in-dash receiver capable of Dolby Atmos playback through Apple CarPlay, bringing immersive audio to millions of existing vehicles.

Previously, in-vehicle Dolby Atmos experiences were limited to factory-equipped systems. SPHERA changes that by enabling drivers to access Dolby Atmos content from popular streaming services, enhancing music, audiobooks, and podcasts with greater depth, clarity, and detail using a vehicle’s existing speakers.

Building on a prototype demonstrated at last year’s CES, SPHERA represents Pioneer’s latest innovation in car audio.

“For over 80 years, Pioneer has achieved many technological ‘firsts’—from the world’s first car CD player to the first aftermarket CarPlay integration,” said Chris Ono, CEO & Chairman of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “SPHERA is the next bold chapter in that legacy. Guided by our corporate mission, ‘Move the Heart and Touch the Soul’, we developed a product that brings the rich, detailed sound of Dolby Atmos that moves the soul, to a solution that can be installed in many vehicles on the road today. With SPHERA, we are expanding access to immersive sound, allowing more drivers than ever to enjoy music with the clarity and emotion its creators intended.”

The receiver features an optimized 4-channel solution powered by Dolby technology, delivering a rich Dolby Atmos experience through front and rear speakers without requiring additional hardware.

SPHERA also incorporates Pioneer’s PURE Autotuning technology, which automatically calibrates time alignment, frequency response, and channel levels to accommodate varying vehicle acoustics, ensuring optimal performance and fidelity to the original content.

The unit includes a 10.1-inch HD capacitive display with Pioneer’s Quick Swipe interface and split-screen mode for intuitive control. Additional features include an integrated Luminous Bar with Enhanced Visual Mode for navigation and Music Synchronization Mode, along with wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. Its design supports universal aftermarket installation in a wide range of vehicles.
‎
MacDailyNews Note: SPHERA will be available in Spring 2026 through authorized retailers such as Best Buy and Crutchfield, with pricing starting at $1,300.

In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reiterated that Tesla plans to add Apple CarPlay support to its vehicles “in the coming months.”

This is easily the biggest news for the regular version of CarPlay in years, should Tesla actually follow through with offering the system in its vehicles.

As noted by Gurman, this would be a stunning reversal for Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, who have long ignored customer requests to implement CarPlay. We shall see what ultimately happens, though. Musk could change his mind at any moment.

Tesla plans to offer the regular, wireless version of CarPlay, rather than the more advanced CarPlay Ultra system, according to Gurman. CarPlay would appear within a window inside of Tesla’s broader software interface, he said.

Tesla currently offers Apple Music and Apple Podcasts apps through its own interface.
