OpenAI has updated its deep research feature in ChatGPT with a fullscreen document viewer that can be used to browse its AI-generated reports separately from the chat window.

The built-in tool includes a table of contents in a left-hand column that can be used to jump to specific parts of the document, while a right-hand column can still be expanded to show a list of citations.

The deep research mode has also picked up a couple of new options to help users focus research. From OpenAI’s release notes:

We’re introducing improvements to deep research in ChatGPT to help produce more accurate, credible reports with greater control. You can now focus research on specific websites and a larger collection of connected apps as trusted sources.

A redesigned sidebar entry point and fullscreen report view make it easier to start, review, and manage research in one place. Create and edit a research plan before it begins, and track progress with the ability to adjust direction mid-run.

Released last year, the deep research feature takes extra time to break a question into parts, then gathers and compares relevant information from the web, cross-checks claims, and synthesizes the findings into a better-supported, coherent answer.

Users can monitor ChatGPT’s progress in real time and adjust the research scope, or add sources while a report is being generated. When the report is finished, it can be exported from the document viewer in multiple formats, including Markdown, Word, and PDF.

OpenAI says the new viewer tool is currently rolling out to Plus and Pro subscribers, with users on its ChatGPT Go tier and free users set to receive the update in the coming days.

U.S. ChatGPT users who have a free account or a low-cost Go subscription will start seeing ads starting today, according to OpenAI.

Ads will be limited to the Free and Go subscription tiers, and will be shown to logged-in adult users. OpenAI does not plan to show ads to minors, and the company claims that ads will not influence the answers that ChatGPT provides. OpenAI also says it will not provide advertisers with content from ChatGPT conversations.

OpenAI is not profitable, and the free and Go tier options require “significant infrastructure and ongoing investment.” OpenAI is funding that work through ads, and it says that customers who do not want to see ads can upgrade to a Plus or Pro plan. There’s also an option to opt out of ads in exchange for fewer daily free messages.

Ads in ChatGPT will be clearly labeled as sponsored and the information will be presented separately from answers that ChatGPT provides. By default, OpenAI will show ads based on conversation topic, past chats, and past interactions with ads. A conversation about recipes, for example, may surface ads for meal kits or grocery delivery.

Advertisers will receive aggregate information like number of views or clicks, but won’t have access to chat history, memories, or personal user information. Ads will not be shown for sensitive topics like health, mental health, or politics.

OpenAI is allowing users to dismiss ads, share feedback, and get information on why a particular ad is displayed. Ad data is also able to be deleted, and personalization can be disabled.

ChatGPT subscribers with Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will not see ads. OpenAI says the current rollout is a test to learn, listen, and get the ad experience right, and the company claims that it believes ads in ChatGPT can be “uniquely valuable for people.”

Last week, OpenAI competitor Anthropic promised to keep the Claude chatbot ad-free in response to OpenAI’s plan to introduce ads. Anthropic shared an anti-ad commercial during the Super Bowl calling out OpenAI for its ad plans, and said that a “conversation with Claude” is not the right place for ads.

As OpenAI is making plans to introduce ads to ChatGPT, competitor Anthropic has promised to keep Claude ad-free. In a blog post today, the company said that there are “many good places for advertising,” but a “conversation with Claude is not one of them.”

According to Anthropic, including ads in Claude would not be in line with its mission of creating a helpful assistant for work and deep thinking. Anthropic claims that users should not need to second-guess whether an AI is being helpful or “subtly steering the conversation towards something monetizable.”

There will be no ads or sponsored links in conversations with Claude, and Claude’s responses will not be influenced by advertisers or include third-party product placements.

Our analysis of conversations with Claude (conducted in a way that keeps all data private and anonymous) shows that an appreciable portion involve topics that are sensitive or deeply personal–the kinds of conversations you might have with a trusted advisor. Many other uses involve complex software engineering tasks, deep work, or thinking through difficult problems. The appearance of ads in these contexts would feel incongruous–and, in many cases, inappropriate.

Promising an ad-free experience could encourage people to choose Claude over OpenAI’s ChatGPT. In January, OpenAI said that it would start testing ads in the United States for free and Go tier subscribers, though subscribers with higher paid tiers will not see ads. OpenAI claims that ads will be clearly labeled and will not influence the answers that ChatGPT provides, nor will the company provide conversation details to advertisers.

To further reinforce the difference between Claude’s ad-free experience and ChatGPT’s ad-supported experience, Anthropic plans to run a humorous Super Bowl commercial where a man gets an unwanted cougar dating ad after asking about his mother. “Ads are coming to AI,” reads the video’s text. “But not to Claude.”

Anthropic plans to continue to monetize through enterprise contracts and paid subscriptions, with revenue reinvested in improving Claude. Anthropic will maintain a free tier, and the company says that it may also offer lower-cost subscription tiers and regional pricing in the future if there is demand for it. Claude Pro is priced at $20 per month, which is the same price as ChatGPT’s higher-end Plus tier.

An ad-free Claude experience isn’t a sure thing forever, as Anthropic gives itself an out in the blog post: “Should we need to revisit this approach, we’ll be transparent about our reasons for doing so.”

A reporter for The Washington Post has put ChatGPT’s new optional Apple Health integration feature to the test by feeding it ten years of their Apple Watch data. The results were not encouraging, to say the least.

Earlier this month, OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT Health, a dedicated section of ChatGPT where users can ask health-related questions completely separated from their main ChatGPT experience. For more personalized responses, users can connect various health data services such as Apple Health, Function, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, AllTrails, Instacart, and Peloton.

ChatGPT Health can also integrate with your medical records, allowing it to analyze your lab results and other aspects of your medical history to inform its answers to your health-related questions.

With this in mind, reporter Geoffrey Fowler gave ChatGPT Health access to 29 million steps and 6 million heartbeat measurements from his Apple Health app, and asked the bot to grade his cardiac health. It gave him an F.

Feeling understandably alarmed, Fowler asked his actual doctor, who in no uncertain terms dismissed the AI’s assessment entirely. His physician said Fowler was at such low risk for heart problems that his insurance likely wouldn’t even cover additional testing to disprove the chatbot’s findings.

Cardiologist Eric Topol of the Scripps Research Institute was likewise unimpressed with the large language model’s assessment. He called ChatGPT’s analysis “baseless” and said people should ignore its medical advice, as it’s clearly not ready for prime time.

Perhaps the most troubling finding, though, was ChatGPT’s inconsistency. When Fowler asked the same question several times, his score swung wildly between an F and a B. ChatGPT also kept forgetting basic information about him, including his gender and age, despite it having full access to his records.

Anthropic’s Claude chatbot fared slightly better – though not by much. The LLM graded Fowler’s cardiac health a C, but it also failed to properly account for limitations in the Apple Watch data.

Both companies say their health tools aren’t meant to replace doctors or provide diagnoses. Topol rightly argued that if these bots can’t accurately assess health data, then they shouldn’t be offering grades at all.

Yet nothing appears to be stopping them. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration earlier this month said the agency’s job is to “get out of the way as a regulator” to promote innovation. An agency commissioner drew a red line at AI making “medical or clinical claims” without FDA review, but ChatGPT and Claude argue they are just providing information.

“People that do this are going to get really spooked about their health,” Topol said. “It could also go the other way and give people who are unhealthy a false sense that everything they’re doing is great.”

ChatGPT’s Apple Health integration is currently limited to a group of beta users. Responding to the report, OpenAI said it was working to improve the consistency of the chatbot’s responses. “Launching ChatGPT Health with waitlisted access allows us to learn and improve the experience before making it widely available,” OpenAI VP Ashley Alexander told the publication in a statement.

As Apple integrates more AI features across its ecosystem (like Apple Intelligence), the company appears to be positioning itself around the idea that foundational AI models will increasingly become commoditized — much like other tech components — shifting value toward integration, user experience, privacy, and on-device capabilities rather than owning the most advanced raw model. This piece explores Apple’s strategic wager in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Instead of obsessing over owning the absolute best raw model, which changes on the minute depending on the criteria being tested, Apple is betting on ecosystem control as the real differentiator — while keeping the backend interchangeable for cost, performance, or strategic reasons.

Alistair Barr for Business Insider:
‎

Apple’s decision to rebuild Siri around Google’s Gemini AI models looks, at first glance, like an admission of failure. After years of promising breakthroughs, Apple is reportedly paying Google roughly $1 billion a year to keep its digital assistant relevant.

Look closer, though, and the move represents something more radical: a giant bet that AI models will become commodities.

Top tech reporter Mark Gurman wrote this week that Apple’s revamped Siri, codenamed Campos, will launch later this year as a full-fledged chatbot embedded across iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The underlying intelligence will come from Google’s Gemini.

The more important detail is architectural. Apple is designing Campos so that the underlying AI models can be swapped out over time, according to Gurman’s report for Bloomberg.

So, Google’s Gemini might power Siri today, but tomorrow it could be OpenAI’s latest GPT offering, or Claude from Anthropic, or whatever Meta is cooking up next, or xAI’s Grok, or Mistral’s offerings, or even region-specific models such as DeepSeek or Alibaba’s Qwen in China…

Of course, it might turn out that underinvesting in your own AI capabilities is a strategic blunder of epic proportions. We’ll see in the next few years.

‎
MacDailyNews Take: We’re perfectly fine with a hot-swappable Siri. We just do not want to be limited only to Google Garbage. As soon as possible, Apple, give users the ability to choose LLMs and even to assign individual LLMs for specific jobs; one for math, another for language, for coding, image-generation, etc. Then Apple users can have the best of all AI worlds!

OpenAI is rolling out another noteworthy update to ChatGPT Atlas, its AI-powered browser for Mac.

As per the release notes, the latest build introduces tab groups, allowing users to organize their browsing sessions more efficiently. The update also brings fixes for vertical tab “mini mode” and a simplified right-click context menu for tabs.

On the search front, Atlas now features an “Auto” mode that automatically switches between ChatGPT and Google depending on the query. The search results UI has also been refreshed with a new vertical layout that more prominently displays links in answers.

Elsewhere in this update, Safari users migrating to Atlas will now be prompted to install the iCloud passwords extension during onboarding. Other changes include a simplified address bar context menu, crash fixes, updated translations, and support for macOS keyboard text replacements on webpages.

Today’s update follows the browser’s first major update that came in November. That introduced vertical tabs, iCloud Passkey support, and Google as a default search engine option.

Atlas currently remains available only on macOS, but OpenAI has said Windows, iOS, and Android versions are coming.

OpenAI is accelerating toward its long-rumored entry into consumer hardware, with the company confirming it’s “on track” to unveil its inaugural always-listening AI device in the second half of 2026. Designed by the team led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive (following OpenAI’s acquisition of his io Products studio), the mysterious gadget is described as a pocket-sized, completely screen-free companion—potentially a pill-shaped, behind-the-ear wearable (codename “Sweetpea”) that uses advanced contextual awareness, custom 2nm chips, and environmental sensors to handle tasks traditionally managed by smartphones or voice assistants like Siri.

OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane emphasized at Davos that “devices” represent one of the “big coming attractions” for 2026, while noting the company is “looking at something in the latter part [of 2026].” As speculation mounts about direct competition with Apple’s AirPods ecosystem — especially given features like voice-command integration and audio-focused design — this debut could mark a pivotal shift in how users interact with AI assistants, blending Ive’s signature minimalist elegance with OpenAI’s ChatGPT-powered intelligence.

Tim Hardwick for MacRumors:
‎

Lehane didn’t go into specifics about the upcoming product, which is being designed by former Apple design chief Jony Ive’s oi Products team. Ive’s startup officially merged with OpenAI last year after it was acquired for $6.5 billion.

According to the leaker known as Smart Pikachu, the devices will be metallic and feature a custom 2nm chip to “replace iPhone actions by commanding Siri,” suggesting some functional overlap with AirPods. The back-of-the-ear modules are also believed to feature sensors for environmental or contextual awareness, and are stored inside an egg-shaped case.

OpenAI is said to be considering launching several AI products over the next few years, potentially including a pen and a “home-style device.” The leak could therefore relate to a different product to the one that OpenAI launches first. That said, Smart Pikachu claims Ive’s team is prioritizing the behind-the-ear wearable, which is reportedly being manufactured by Foxconn and could launch as soon as September, so we’ll have to wait and see.

‎
MacDailyNews Take: Obviously, the jury’s out until we see what features such devices can offer, but, the privacy concerns of an always-listening OpenAI device abound aplenty.
