Apple’s ecosystem of apps and services plays a crucial role in enhancing the user experience across its range of devices. Over the years, Apple has continually expanded its offerings, introducing new features and services that provide value, convenience, and seamless integration. This article explores the latest developments in Apple’s apps and services, highlighting how they contribute to the ever-growing Apple ecosystem.

Core Apple Apps and Their Evolution

Apple’s core apps have been fundamental to the user experience on iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. These apps include Messages, Safari, Mail, Notes, Calendar, and more. Over time, Apple has added significant updates to these apps to keep them relevant and competitive.

Messages

With the advent of iOS 16 and 17, Apple introduced several enhancements to the Messages app:

Edit and Unsend Messages: Users can now edit sent messages and even unsend them within a short time frame, reducing the risk of miscommunication.

Shared with You: This feature collects links, photos, and other content shared in Messages and highlights them in the respective apps, like Safari or Photos, for easier access.

Tapbacks and Reactions: Expanding on existing reactions, Apple added more expressive options to make conversations more engaging.

Safari

Safari, Apple’s web browser, has undergone various improvements to enhance privacy, speed, and usability:

Passkeys: A revolutionary feature aiming to replace traditional passwords with cryptographic keys, providing a more secure and user-friendly login experience.

Tab Groups: A way to organize tabs, making it easier to manage multiple sessions and sync them across devices.

Enhanced Privacy Features: Tools like Intelligent Tracking Prevention and Privacy Reports help users understand and control how their data is being used.

New Apple Services and Features

Beyond the core apps, Apple has introduced several services that extend the capabilities of its ecosystem, creating a more interconnected experience for users.

Apple Fitness+

Apple Fitness+ is a subscription-based service that provides guided workouts and meditation sessions. Integrated with the Apple Watch, it offers personalized workout recommendations based on user activity. Recent updates have introduced:

Group Workouts with SharePlay: Allowing users to work out with friends via FaceTime.

New Workout Types: Including Pilates, Tai Chi, and more, expanding the diversity of fitness options.

Apple Pay Later

In response to the growing trend of buy now, pay later services, Apple introduced Apple Pay Later. This feature allows users to split purchases made with Apple Pay into four payments spread over six weeks, with no interest or fees. This service is tightly integrated into the Wallet app, making it easy to manage payments.

Apple Music Sing

Apple Music Sing is an exciting new feature that transforms Apple Music into a karaoke-like experience. With adjustable vocals and real-time lyrics, users can sing along to their favorite songs, making it a fun addition for music enthusiasts.

iCloud Shared Photo Library

One of the most anticipated features, iCloud Shared Photo Library, allows users to create a shared photo library with up to five other people. This feature makes it easier for families and groups to keep their photos in one place, with everyone having equal rights to add, edit, and delete content.

Enhancing the Ecosystem

The seamless integration of Apple’s apps and services across devices is a cornerstone of the Apple ecosystem. New features like Handoff, Universal Control, and Continuity Camera exemplify this integration:

Handoff: Allows users to start a task on one Apple device and continue it on another, such as moving from browsing on an iPhone to a Mac.

Universal Control: Introduced with macOS Monterey, this feature allows users to use a single mouse and keyboard across multiple Macs and iPads, enhancing productivity.

Continuity Camera: Lets users use their iPhone as a webcam for their Mac, providing superior video quality and access to iPhone camera features.

The Future of Apple Apps and Services

As Apple continues to innovate, the future of its apps and services looks promising. Expected developments include:

Enhanced AI and Machine Learning: Integration of more advanced AI to provide smarter, more personalized experiences in apps like Siri, Photos, and Apple Music.

Augmented Reality (AR) Features: As Apple invests in AR technology, future updates may include more AR capabilities within core apps and services.

Health and Wellness: Expansion of health tracking and wellness features, potentially integrating new sensors and data analysis tools in conjunction with the Apple Watch and Health app.

Conclusion

Apple’s continuous updates and innovations in its apps and services significantly enhance the user experience within its ecosystem. With new features like Apple Pay Later, Apple Music Sing, and iCloud Shared Photo Library, Apple not only keeps its current offerings fresh but also anticipates future user needs. As Apple continues to expand its ecosystem, users can expect even more integration, functionality, and convenience across all Apple devices and services.

In recent years, Apple has made substantial strides in the healthcare industry, positioning itself as a key player in the development of health-focused technologies. Through its Apple Health app and a growing range of health-related devices, the company has built an ecosystem aimed at improving personal health, enhancing wellness, and empowering users to take control of their physical and mental well-being.

This article explores the development of the Apple Health app, the various health-related devices Apple has introduced, and the ways these innovations are shaping the future of healthcare.

The Apple Health App: A Hub for Health and Fitness Data

Launched in 2014, the Apple Health app serves as a centralized platform for users to monitor and manage their health and fitness data. The app aggregates information from various sources, including the iPhone, Apple Watch, and third-party health and fitness apps, providing a comprehensive overview of a user’s well-being.

The Apple Health app is equipped with a variety of features, each designed to make tracking health data simple and convenient:

Health Metrics and Trends: Users can monitor key health metrics such as steps taken, calories burned, heart rate, sleep patterns, and exercise minutes. The app also tracks long-term trends, enabling users to see changes in their health over time and make informed decisions about their wellness routines.

Sleep Tracking: With the introduction of the Sleep app on Apple Watch, the Health app now plays a central role in tracking sleep quality and duration. Users can view their nightly sleep patterns and receive insights into how to improve their sleep hygiene.

Activity Rings: One of the most recognizable features of the Apple Health app is the Activity Rings—three interactive rings that track movement, exercise, and standing. These rings motivate users to stay active throughout the day by encouraging them to complete daily fitness goals.

Medical Records: In collaboration with healthcare providers, Apple has integrated the ability to store medical records within the Health app. This feature gives users access to essential medical information such as lab results, immunization records, and medications, all in one place. The integration of medical records makes it easier for users to stay informed about their health and share important data with their healthcare providers.

Health Sharing: With the introduction of Health Sharing, users can now share specific health data with family members, caregivers, or healthcare professionals. This can help track the progress of health conditions and promote better care coordination.

Fitness+ Integration: Apple’s subscription-based Fitness+ service integrates seamlessly with the Health app, offering personalized workout routines, meditation sessions, and other wellness activities. The app tracks workout metrics, helping users stay on top of their fitness goals.

The Apple Watch: A Powerful Health and Fitness Companion

The Apple Watch is arguably the most prominent health-related device in Apple’s lineup. Since its launch in 2015, the Apple Watch has evolved into a powerful tool for personal health monitoring, offering features that go far beyond its initial focus on fitness tracking. The watch not only tracks basic metrics but also provides advanced health features that can potentially save lives.

Key Health Features of the Apple Watch:

Heart Rate Monitoring: The Apple Watch has long been known for its heart rate tracking capabilities, providing users with continuous monitoring and alerts for irregular heart rhythms. The ECG (electrocardiogram) feature introduced in the Apple Watch Series 4 takes this to the next level by enabling users to record a detailed heart rhythm to detect signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib), a serious heart condition.

Blood Oxygen Monitoring: Starting with the Apple Watch Series 6, users can monitor their blood oxygen levels in real time. This feature can help detect early signs of respiratory issues, offering insights into lung and overall cardiovascular health.

Fall Detection: A critical feature in the Apple Watch, fall detection uses the watch’s accelerometer and gyroscope to detect sudden movements, such as a fall. If a fall is detected, the watch alerts emergency services and can send a notification to a designated emergency contact.

Mindfulness and Stress Management: The Apple Watch promotes mental well-being by offering features like Mindfulness, which provides breathing exercises and guided meditation. The watch also tracks stress levels using the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) data, offering insights into how the body responds to stress.

Temperature Sensing: Introduced in the Apple Watch Series 8, the temperature sensing feature is designed to track changes in body temperature. This is particularly useful for understanding menstrual cycle patterns and overall body temperature trends.

Fitness+ Workouts: The integration with Fitness+ enhances the Apple Watch’s health capabilities. Fitness+ offers a wide variety of workouts, including yoga, cycling, and strength training, with personalized recommendations based on users’ activity levels.

Apple’s Health-Related Devices: Expanding the Ecosystem

In addition to the Apple Watch and iPhone, Apple has developed a range of other devices that contribute to its health and wellness ecosystem. These devices work in tandem with the Apple Health app to enhance overall health management.

AirPods and Hearing Health: With the launch of AirPods, Apple has introduced new features to help users manage their hearing health. The Live Listen feature, for example, turns AirPods into a hearing aid, allowing users to hear conversations more clearly in noisy environments. Additionally, Headphone Safety notifications help users avoid excessive headphone volume levels that could lead to hearing damage.

Apple Fitness+: While technically a service, Apple Fitness+ is an integral part of the health ecosystem, offering a range of guided workouts, meditations, and health programs. The service is available on the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, and tracks real-time metrics such as heart rate, calories burned, and workout duration. This integration encourages users to stay active and reach their fitness goals while promoting mindfulness and recovery.

HealthKit and ResearchKit: HealthKit is Apple’s framework for developers to create health-related apps that integrate seamlessly with the Apple Health app. In addition, ResearchKit allows developers to build apps that contribute to medical research, helping healthcare providers and researchers collect data on health trends and conditions. These initiatives support Apple’s long-term commitment to advancing healthcare and medical research.

Future of Apple and Healthcare: Focus on Innovation

Apple’s ongoing commitment to healthcare is evident in its constant drive to introduce new features, enhancements, and breakthroughs in health-related technology. The company’s ecosystem is designed to empower users to take charge of their health, whether it’s monitoring their fitness, tracking vital signs, or staying connected with medical professionals.

Looking ahead, Apple is likely to focus on a few key areas in healthcare:

AI and Machine Learning in Healthcare: Apple’s growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning will likely play a critical role in healthcare. AI can analyze vast amounts of health data, providing insights and recommendations tailored to individual users. For example, AI could predict potential health issues, like heart disease, by analyzing trends in a user’s heart rate and activity data.

Expanded Medical Capabilities: Apple could expand its health-related features to include more advanced medical capabilities, such as blood glucose monitoring for diabetic users or even continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) integration. These additions would make the Apple Watch a more comprehensive tool for managing chronic conditions.

Integration with Telemedicine: Apple has already made strides in telemedicine by offering users the ability to share health data with healthcare providers. In the future, Apple could introduce more robust telehealth features, enabling virtual consultations with doctors directly through the Apple Health app.

Conclusion

Apple’s foray into the healthcare industry is a testament to its commitment to innovation and user-centered design. The Apple Health app and Apple Watch have revolutionized the way users track and manage their health, offering comprehensive insights into everything from fitness and sleep patterns to heart health and mindfulness. As Apple continues to develop new health-related technologies and integrates AI, machine learning, and telemedicine, the company is well-positioned to play a pivotal role in the future of personal health and wellness.

In an era dominated by technology and interconnectedness, the safeguarding of personal information has become a critical concern for individuals

In an era dominated by technology and interconnectedness, the safeguarding of personal information has become a critical concern for individuals and corporations alike. Apple Inc., a global leader in innovation, has consistently positioned data privacy and security as foundational principles, distinguishing itself in a landscape often plagued by breaches and cyber threats.

Apple’s Commitment to Privacy

Privacy as a Fundamental Right

At the core of Apple’s philosophy is the belief that privacy is a fundamental human right. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, has frequently emphasized the company’s dedication to protecting user data, ensuring that individuals have control over their personal information. This commitment is not just a marketing strategy for Apple but is deeply embedded in the company’s ethos.

User-Centric Approach

Unlike some tech giants that monetize user data, Apple follows a user-centric approach. The company designs its products and services with privacy in mind, minimizing the collection of personal information and providing users with transparent control over what data is shared. This focus on user empowerment sets Apple apart in an industry where data exploitation is not uncommon.

Security Measures Implemented by Apple

Encryption Technologies

Apple employs robust encryption technologies to protect user data. Whether it’s iMessage conversations, FaceTime calls, or stored files on iCloud, Apple uses end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the intended recipients can access the information. This level of encryption provides users with a sense of security in their digital communications and storage.

Differential Privacy

Apple leverages differential privacy, a technique that adds random noise to user data before it’s analyzed, preventing the identification of individual users while still extracting valuable insights. This innovation allows Apple to enhance its products and services without compromising user privacy, showcasing the company’s commitment to finding a balance between innovation and protection.

Transparent Data Practices

App Store Privacy Labels

In a bid to enhance transparency, Apple introduced privacy labels on its App Store. These labels provide users with information about an app’s data collection practices, empowering them to make informed decisions about the apps they choose to download. This transparency initiative is a commendable step towards fostering a more privacy-conscious user base.

Privacy Nutrition Labels

Apple goes beyond app transparency with its Privacy Nutrition Labels, offering users a concise summary of an app’s privacy practices. This visual representation simplifies complex privacy policies, enabling users to grasp the extent of data collection, and serves as an exemplar for the tech industry in fostering clear communication with users.

The Ongoing Battle for Privacy

Legal Advocacy

Apple actively engages in legal battles to defend user privacy. From resisting government requests for backdoor access to user devices to challenging invasive surveillance laws, the company stands firm in protecting its users’ right to privacy. This legal advocacy sets a precedent for the industry, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding user data against unwarranted intrusion.

Conclusion: A Privacy-First Future

In a digital landscape where data breaches and privacy concerns continue to make headlines, Apple stands as a beacon of privacy and security. By prioritizing user control, implementing advanced encryption, and championing transparency, Apple has redefined the standards for data protection. As technology evolves, Apple’s unwavering commitment to user privacy positions it as a leader, inspiring other companies to adopt a privacy-first approach in the digital age.

Apple has unveiled macOS 13, the latest iteration of its desktop operating system, bringing a wave of security enhancements and privacy-focused features. This update reflects Apple’s continued commitment to safeguarding user data and empowering individuals to control their digital lives. Let’s delve into what macOS 13 offers:

Bolstering Security:

Gatekeeper on Steroids: Gatekeeper, the built-in security gatekeeper, now employs stricter checks on downloaded applications, scrutinizing their origin, code signing, and potential risks. This multi-layered approach significantly reduces the chances of malware infiltrating your system.

Enhanced System Integrity Protection (SIP): SIP, which safeguards core system files from unauthorized modifications, has received a boost in macOS 13. This fortification further thwarts attempts by malicious actors to tamper with the operating system, ensuring its stability and integrity.

Advanced Sandboxing: Applications will now run in more isolated sandboxes, restricting their access to other apps, system resources, and user data. This granular control minimizes the potential damage caused by compromised software, keeping your data secure.

Empowering Privacy:

App Tracking Transparency Evolved: Building on the success of App Tracking Transparency (ATT), users now have even more control over how apps track their data. Granular permissions allow you to choose which apps can access your location, contacts, and other sensitive information, empowering you to make informed decisions about your privacy.

Enhanced Mail Privacy Protection: Mail now conceals IP addresses and prevents senders from learning if you’ve opened their emails. This shields your online activity and protects you from email tracking tactics.

Dictation Privacy: On-device dictation processing ensures your voice data stays private and is never sent to Apple’s servers. This protects your conversations and eliminates concerns about potential misuse of your voice data.

Additional Highlights:

Improved Password Manager: iCloud Keychain receives a makeover, offering more robust password generation, automatic breach alerts, and improved integration with other Apple devices.

Family Sharing Enhancements: Parents gain finer control over children’s app purchases and screen time, fostering a safer and more balanced digital experience.

Performance Optimizations: macOS 13 delivers performance improvements across the board, leading to a smoother and more responsive user experience.

Conclusion:

macOS 13 represents a significant leap forward in both security and privacy for Mac users. The new features empower individuals to take control of their digital lives, safeguard their data, and enjoy a more secure and private computing experience. Whether you’re a seasoned Apple user or just starting out, macOS 13 offers valuable tools to protect yourself in today’s increasingly digital world.

Apple’s latest iteration of their mobile operating system, iOS 16, marks a significant step forward in their commitment to accessibility

Apple’s latest iteration of their mobile operating system, iOS 16, marks a significant step forward in their commitment to accessibility and inclusive design. This update goes beyond simple bug fixes and feature additions, showcasing a deliberate focus on creating a user experience that caters to individuals with diverse abilities and needs.

Let’s delve into some of the key accessibility features introduced in iOS 16:

Enhanced Voice Control: Voice Control receives a major upgrade, allowing users to navigate their device and interact with apps entirely through voice commands. Granular control over system elements, improved dictation accuracy, and offline functionality empower users with motor limitations to independently operate their iPhones and iPads.

Live Captions for All Audio: This groundbreaking feature transcribes any audio playing on the device, be it videos, calls, FaceTime conversations, or even live audio from the surrounding environment. This opens up a world of information and connection for users who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as those in noisy environments.

Door Detection: This innovative feature, powered by LiDAR scanners on supported devices, helps visually impaired users navigate unfamiliar spaces. It identifies nearby doors, announces their location and type (automatic or manual), and even reads any signage present. This newfound independence fosters confidence and mobility.

Customizable Display and Sound: Building upon existing accessibility options, iOS 16 offers even more granular control over display settings. Users can fine-tune font sizes, color filters, and background blur to optimize visual comfort. Additionally, customizable sound profiles and notification tones cater to diverse auditory preferences.

Focus Filters: Recognizing the need for distraction-free environments, iOS 16 introduces Focus Filters. These allow users to create custom profiles that filter specific apps, contacts, and notifications based on their chosen focus (work, personal, sleep, etc.). This promotes concentration and reduces information overload, benefiting individuals with neurodivergent conditions like ADHD.

Beyond Features: It’s crucial to acknowledge that accessibility goes beyond individual features. Apple has emphasized inclusive design principles throughout iOS 16, ensuring a cohesive and intuitive experience for all users. Clear and concise language, consistent UI elements, and intuitive navigation patterns contribute to a universally accessible interface.

Looking Ahead: While iOS 16 represents a significant leap forward, Apple’s commitment to accessibility shouldn’t end there. Continuous improvement through user feedback, collaboration with disability advocacy groups, and a focus on emerging technologies like augmented reality are crucial to ensuring a truly inclusive mobile experience for everyone.

In conclusion, iOS 16 marks a commendable step towards a more accessible and inclusive mobile ecosystem. By implementing thoughtful features, embracing inclusive design principles, and prioritizing user feedback, Apple paves the way for a future where technology empowers everyone, regardless of their abilities.

Apple, renowned for its seamless integration across its devices and services, is poised to revolutionize the immersive computing landscape with

Apple, renowned for its seamless integration across its devices and services, is poised to revolutionize the immersive computing landscape with its highly anticipated AR/VR headset. While the device’s specific features remain shrouded in secrecy, several reports and speculations point towards a deep integration with the existing Apple ecosystem, promising a cohesive and interconnected user experience.

Handoff and Continuity: Seamlessly Moving Across Devices

One of Apple’s hallmark technologies, Handoff, is expected to play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the AR/VR headset and other Apple devices. Users could seamlessly transition between their headset and iPhone, iPad, or Mac, allowing them to pick up conversations, resume tasks, and access their favorite apps without missing a beat.

Continuity, another Apple staple, could facilitate data sharing and synchronization across devices. For instance, users could view and manipulate documents created on their laptop or tablet directly within the AR/VR environment. This seamless connectivity would eliminate the need to constantly switch between devices, enhancing productivity and overall convenience.

Shared Experiences: Connecting with Others in Virtual Worlds

Apple is reportedly developing features that allow users to share their AR/VR experiences with others, fostering a sense of connection and collaboration. This could be achieved through real-time video conferencing, allowing friends or colleagues to join an AR meeting or experience a virtual reality adventure together.

The ability to share experiences would not only enhance social interactions but also open up new avenues for education, training, and teamwork. Imagine collaborating on a complex design project within a shared virtual space or exploring a historical site together, transcending physical boundaries.

Unified Software and Services: A Holistic AR/VR Experience

Apple’s renowned software development platforms, such as Swift and Unity, are expected to play a significant role in creating AR/VR experiences for the upcoming headset. This would provide developers with a familiar and powerful environment to build immersive apps, games, and productivity tools.

Additionally, Apple services like iCloud, Maps, and Siri could be seamlessly integrated into the AR/VR experience, providing users with access to their personal data, location information, and voice assistant capabilities within the virtual world. This integration would further enhance the accessibility and convenience of AR/VR applications.

Expanding the Apple Ecosystem: A Gateway to the Metaverse

Apple’s AR/VR headset could serve as a gateway to the metaverse, a concept that envisions a shared virtual world where people interact, work, and play. By seamlessly integrating with other Apple devices, the headset could provide a consistent and unified experience, making it an attractive platform for metaverse applications and experiences.

As Apple continues to refine its AR/VR technology and expand its ecosystem, it is poised to play a leading role in shaping the future of immersive computing. With its commitment to seamless integration and user-friendly experiences, Apple could revolutionize the way we interact with technology, blurring the lines between the real and virtual worlds.

When Apple unveiled its first-ever smartwatch back in 2014, it’s fair to say that the world wasn’t exactly sure what it was for… and neither was Apple. In those early days, along with the fitness elements which would remain an enduring part of the product’s appeal, the company talked enthusiastically about sharing taps, sketches, and heartbeats with friends, which would not. It took time for users and third-party developers to teach Apple what they wanted from a smartwatch, and for the company to take that on board.

Today, the Apple Watch is a mature and versatile product. It’s so versatile, indeed, that you may not be aware of some of its most useful capabilities. In this article, we’re going to catch you up.

Take better iPhone photos

This was a superb piece of lateral thinking. There have always been situations where it’s difficult or impossible to trigger a camera because it needs to be out of reach, or out of sight, of the person taking the picture: when you’re trying to photograph the ports around the back of your Mac, for example, or when setting up a formal group photo that everyone wants to be in. Timers used to be the main solution, but often resulted in a mad scramble to place the camera correctly and get back in time before the time ran out. But the Apple Watch offers something better.

Open the Camera Remote app on your watch, and it will simultaneously open the Camera app on the paired iPhone. Whatever the iPhone’s camera can see, you can now see on your watch; you can switch between the front and rear cameras (and toggle some other settings) using the options button at the bottom right. Once you’re happy, hit the three-second timer button, look up and smile, and enjoy your perfect photo.

You can turn off the three-second timer using the options menu on the right, but it gives you time to compose yourself.

Unlock other Apple devices

An Apple Watch, once you’ve unlocked it with a single passcode input, remains unlocked as long as it stays on your wrist. It can thus act as a handy digital key that’s on you at all times, unlocking your Mac and iPhone by proximity alone.

On iPhone, open the Settings app and go to Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode on older devices), then scroll down and tap the toggle under Unlock With Apple Watch. On Mac, open System Settings and go to Touch ID & Password and click the toggle next to your Apple Watch.

Play games

As small as the Apple Watch’s screen may be, it can still support some fun games; they just need to be designed with that limitation in mind. You need to be selective. We’d recommend Deep Golf and Lifeline, both of which make perfect sense in this format, but there are some more excellent suggestions here.

Talk to ChatGPT

You probably have your own thoughts on the ethics of AI, but it’s hard to deny that ChatGPT is fun to play with. Thanks to the Petey app, you can now have those conversations on Apple Watch. Tap the ‘Ask me Anything’ button then type in a query (or better still, use the dictation button and save your tapping finger) and you’ll soon hear what our future AI overlord thinks of the matter. There’s even a complication, which means Petey is never more than a tap away.

Petey can handle life’s most serious questions.

Foundry

Control navigation with air gestures

The standard control method for Apple Watch involves having the device on one wrist, and then tapping the screen and pressing and rotating the buttons and dials with the other hand. But there are situations where you need to control the watch with the same hand it’s on. And this is possible, thanks to AssistiveTouch, one of Apple’s handy accessibility features.

Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone. (Alternatively, you can set the feature up in the Apple Watch’s own Settings app, but I found this fiddly.) In the My Watch tab, select Accessibility, then scroll down until you see AssistiveTouch. Tap this, then tap the toggle at the top of the next screen to turn it on.

By default, doing a pinch gesture with the watch-bearing hand will take you forwards in menus, while double-pinching (pinching twice, rather than pinching once with two fingers) will take you back; clenching your fist will act as a tap, while double-clenching will open a menu of actions, which takes a little getting used to. In fact, the whole thing has a learning curve, but practice makes perfect, and you can change the actions tied to each gesture.

Tell the time without looking

If for whatever reason you are unable to look at your Apple Watch but you’d still like to know the time, Speak Time is the lesser-known feature for you. To set it up, open the Settings app on the watch and go to Clock, scroll down until you see Speak Time, then tap to turn it on. (Again, this can also be done in the Watch app on a paired iPhone; again, go to Clock then hit Speak Time.) Now you need only hold two fingers on the watch face for a second or so and it will tell you the time out loud.

Conversely, if you’d like to know the time silently without looking at the screen, consider Taptic Time. (You can turn this on in the Watch app by going to Clock > Taptic Time, or following a similar route in the Apple Watch’s Settings app.) There are various options but I find the Digits format easiest: this would for example give one long tap, followed by four short taps, followed by three long taps, followed by six short taps, to give you the time 14:36.

Quickly reply to messages

The Apple Watch probably doesn’t seem like the optimal device for writing out messages, but watchOS has been cleverly designed to help. Tap a notification of an incoming message (or open the Messages app on your Apple Watch and tap a message there) and you’ll see the option to reply. This is easier than it sounds.

The easiest method is to select one of the pre-written replies, such as yes, no, and “Can I call you later?” One tap and the canned reply is winging its way to the recipient: easy. And if these replies seem too limited, write some of your own by opening the Watch app on your paired iPhone and going to Messages > Default Replies.

By default the Messages app offers context-sensitive Smart Replies, but you can turn this off in the settings.

Foundry

If you’d rather be spontaneous, you can type out a reply on your wrist in the onscreen keyboard, but we’d recommend that you instead swipe up and select the Scribble keyboard instead: this has you scrawl a letter at a time using the entire screen, which is much easier than hitting tiny keys. Or best of all, tap the dictation button and speak your thoughts out loud.

Make your battery last much longer

Hardly anyone seems to know that the Apple Watch now has a Low Power mode–perhaps because it already had a Power Reserve mode, which was far more drastic and made the watch basically unusable. But Low Power, finally added in watchOS 9 in 2022, is much closer to the equivalent iPhone feature, simply cutting back on features and settings to eke out a little more battery life.

To turn on Low Power mode, open Control Center by swiping up from the clock face, then tap the battery percentage. Just below the Battery Remaining figure, you’ll see a toggle labeled Low Power Mode. (Note that in watchOS 10, Control Center is instead accessed by pressing the side button.)

Preserve your privacy

The always-on screen offered on the Series 5 onwards has many good qualities, but you might be worried that it means personal data may be visible to other people. Fortunately, you can adjust the settings so that sensitive complications and notifications only appear when your wrist is raised.

Let’s start with complications, which could display personal data such as calendar appointments or health information. Open the Watch app on your paired iPhone. From the My Watch tab, go to Display & Brightness > Always On > Show Complications Data. From here you can pick and choose which complications are allowed to display their data when the always-on screen is in dimmed mode.

Think carefully about information that could be embarrassing if seen publicly.

Foundry

Similarly, if you go to Display & Brightness > Always On > Show Notifications you can fine-tune the notifications which appear in dimmed mode, and which are only allowed to reveal their information when you’ve raised your wrist.

Get discreet directions

When you’re lost in a new city, the last thing you want to do is advertise the fact that you’re a tourist (or indeed the fact that you’ve got an expensive smartwatch on your wrist and an expensive smartphone in your pocket). For this reason, it’s desirable to have Maps advise you of turnings in a way that’s discreet and doesn’t require that you look at the screen of your Apple Watch or iPhone.

While you’re still somewhere safe, open Maps on your iPhone and select a destination and the type of directions you want. Start the journey, and make sure you turn off the sound alerts by tapping the mute/unmute button on the right-hand side. Tuck the iPhone away in a pocket.

Now, as you walk along, the Apple Watch will alert you to left turns by giving you three sets of two short buzzes and signal right turns with a rapid and even series of 10 to 12 haptic taps. (You don’t need to count them, it’s the rhythm that gives it away.) When you reach your destination you get a long vibration.

Apple is the Online Safety Bill as it could be used to force encrypted messaging tools like iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal and other to scan messages for, ostensibly, child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Apple’s opposition comes as 80 organizations and tech experts have written to UK Technology Minister Chloe Smith urging a rethink.

Chris Vallance for The Beeb:

Apple told the BBC the bill should be amended to protect encryption.

Police, the government and some high-profile child protection charities maintain the tech – used in apps such as WhatsApp and Apple’s iMessage – prevents law enforcement and the firms themselves from identifying the sharing of child sexual abuse material.

But in a statement Apple said: “End-to-end encryption is a critical capability that protects the privacy of journalists, human rights activists, and diplomats.
“It also helps everyday citizens defend themselves from surveillance, identity theft, fraud, and data breaches. The Online Safety Bill poses a serious threat to this protection, and could put UK citizens at greater risk.

“Apple urges the government to amend the bill to protect strong end-to-end encryption for the benefit of all.”

Several messaging platforms, including Signal and WhatsApp, have previously told the BBC they will refuse to weaken the privacy of their encrypted messaging systems if directed to do so.

Signal said in February that it would “walk” from the UK if forced to weaken the privacy of its encrypted messaging app.

Apple’s statement now means that some of the most widely used encrypted apps oppose this part of the bill.

In 2021 Apple announced plans to scan photographs on people’s iPhones for abusive content before they were uploaded to iCloud but these were abandoned after a backlash. It has now clearly signalled its opposition to any measure that weakens the privacy of end-to-end encryption.

MacDailyNews Take: As Apple should. (Here’s why.)

The open letter signed by over 80 civil society organizations calls on the UK government to protect digital security and private communications by removing provisions from the Online Safety Bill that would require communications service providers to add “backdoors” to encrypted messaging services, undermining safety for all. Here it is, verbatim:

To: Chloe Smith, Secretary of State,

Department for Science, Innovation and Technology

cc: Tom Tugendhat, Minister of State for Security, Home Office Paul Scully, Minister for Tech and the Digital Economy Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay

Dear Ms Smith,

Online Safety Bill: Civil society organisations urge UK to protect global digital security and safeguard private communication.

We are over 80 national and international civil society organisations, academics and cyber- experts. We represent a wide range of perspectives including digital human rights and technology. We are writing to you to raise our concerns about the serious threat to the security of private and encrypted messaging posed by the UK’s proposed Online Safety Bill (OSB).

The Online Safety Bill is a deeply troubling legislative proposal. If passed in its present form, the UK could become the first liberal democracy to require the routine scanning of people’s private chat messages, including chats that are secured by end-to-end encryption. As over 40 million UK citizens and 2 billion people worldwide rely on these services, this poses a significant risk to the security of digital communication services not only in the UK, but also internationally.

End-to-end encryption ensures the security of communications for everyone on a network.

It is designed so that no-one, including the platform provider, can read or alter the messages. The confidentiality between sender and recipient is completely preserved. That’s why the United Nations, several human rights groups, and anti-human trafficking organisations alike have emphasised that encryption is a vital human rights tool. [i]

In order to comply with the Online Safety Bill, platform providers would have to break that protection either by removing it or by developing work-arounds. Any form of work-around risks compromising the security of the messaging platform, creating back-doors, and other dangerous ways and means for malicious actors and hostile states to corrupt the system. [ii] This would put all users in danger.

The UK government has indicated its intention for providers to use a technology that would scan chats on people’s phone and devices – known as client-side scanning. The UK government’s assertion that client-side scanning will not compromise the privacy of messages contradicts the significant evidence of cyber-security experts around the world. This software intercepts chat messages before they are encrypted, and as the user is uploading their images or text, and therefore confidentiality of messages cannot be guaranteed. It would most likely breach human rights law in the UK and internationally. [iii]

Serious concerns have also been raised about similar provisions in the EU’s proposed ‘Child Sexual Abuse Regulation’, which an independent expert study warns is in contradiction to human rights rules. [iv] French, Irish and Austrian parliamentarians have all also warned of severe threats to human rights and of undermining encryption. [v]

Moreover, the scanning software would have to be pre-installed on people’s phones, without their permission or full awareness of the severe privacy and security implications. The underlying databases can be corrupted by hostile actors, meaning that individual phones would become vulnerable to attack. The breadth of the measures proposed in the Online Safety Bill – which would infringe the rights to privacy to the same extent for the internet’s majority of legitimate law-abiding users as it would for potential criminals – means that the measures cannot be considered either necessary or proportionate. [vi]

The inconvenient truth is that it is not possible to scan messages for bad things without infringing on the privacy of lawful messages. It is not possible to create a backdoor that only works for “good people” and that cannot be exploited by “bad people”.

Privacy and free expression rights are vital for all citizens everywhere, in every country, to do their jobs, raise their voices, and hold power to account without arbitrary intrusion, persecution or repression. End-to-end encryption provides vital security that allows them to do that without arbitrary interference. People in conflict zones who rely on secure encrypted communications to be able to speak safely to friends and family as well as for national security. Journalists around the world who rely on the confidential channels of encrypted chat, can communicate to sources and upload their stories in safety.

Children, too, need these rights, as emphasised by UNICEF based on the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child.vii Child safety and privacy are not mutually exclusive; they are mutually reinforcing. Indeed, children are less safe without encrypted communications, as they equally rely on secure digital experiences free from their data being harvested or conversations intercepted. Online content scanning alone cannot hope to find out the serious cases of exploitation, which require a whole-of-society approach. The UK government must invest in education, judicial reform, social services, law enforcement and other critical resources to prevent abuse before it can reach the point of online dissemination, thereby prioritising harm prevention over retrospective scanning. [viii]

As an international community, we are deeply concerned that the UK will become the weak link in the global system. The security risk will not be confined within UK borders. It is difficult to envisage how such a destructive step for the security of billions of users could be justified. [ix]

The UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has said that the UK will maintain freedom, peace and security around the world. With that in mind, we urge you to ensure that end-to-end encrypted services will be removed from the scope of the Bill and that the privacy of people’s confidential communications will be upheld.
