The Apple Pencil is an obvious choice, what isn’t quite so obvious is which Apple Pencil you should choose. There are two Apple Pencils. The Apple Pencil 1st generation is still on sale despite launching in 2015 and there is an Apple Pencil 2nd generation, which launched in 2018. The first generation Apple Pencil, which features later in this round-up, works with the current 9th and 10th generation iPads as well as a number of older iPad models. The second generation Apple Pencil, works with the 12.9in iPad Pro (3rd gen up), 11in iPad Pro (1st gen up), iPad Air (4th gen up) and iPad mini (6th gen).

When we reviewed the Apple Pencil 2nd gen back in 2018 we gave it 5 stars. It’s shorter than the original and Apple has given the 2nd gen Pencil a flat edge you can tap to trigger app-specific functions. This actually makes Apple’s stylus easier to hold and it stops it rolling off your desk. The 2nd gen Pencil is also magnetically attachable to the iPad, which also helps with the rolling.

Another major change is that the 2018 Pencil has no Lightning connector for charging, instead, it charges wirelessly when connected to the iPad, which is much neater. The 2nd gen Pencil is matt white rather than the glossy white of the original (which could be a bit dazzling). You can also tell the two apart because the original had a metallic ring next to the charging cap.

Both the 1st and 2nd generation Apple Pencils are equally responsive and pressure-sensitive. You can tilt the stylus to create different textures, making it a great tool for handwriting, sketching, note-taking and illustration.

If you want something that feels more like a real pen, a fountain pen at that, then the Adonit Star will be a breath of fresh air. The classic design is reminiscent of a Mont Blanc, but without some of the bulk and most of the price. Popping off the cap reveals a fountain-pen style nib, replete with the ink feed on the back, but on closer inspection, you’ll see that the metal cuts off early, with a black rubber 1mm fine tip being what will actually touch the screen.

As you might expect, the Star is very much intended for those who want to make notes and generally just write on their iPad. It doesn’t have pressure sensitivity, so you can’t have thicker or thinner strokes depending on how hard you press, which would rule it out for most artists. That’s fine though, there’s the Apple Pencil for that. Instead, you get a balanced and very comfortable writing experience, aided in no small measure by Adonit’s excellent palm cancellation feature.

Pairing is simply a matter of pressing the small button on the Star, then when the blue light comes on you should be good to go. If it starts flashing red, this means it is time for a recharge, so unscrew the bottom of the pen and there’s a USB-C port. The Star takes around an hour to charge and will then work happily for around 10 hours or so.

Adonit has come up with something genuinely unique in the Star. Classy looking, nice to write with, and it will definitely get some looks when you pull it out in a meeting to make notes. If there’s such a thing as a Stylus connoisseur, then you can bet that the Adonit Star would be a prizes part of their collection.

The second generation Apple Pencil features earlier this round-up, but we still recommend the first generation Apple Pencil, which is still on sale. The older Apple Pencil works with the current 9th and 10th generation iPads as well as a number of older iPad models including the 6th generation iPad and later, the iPad Air (3rd gen), iPad mini (5th gen) and the original iPad Pro (1st and 2nd gen). If those are the iPads you have that this is the Apple Pencil for you. Unsure: check which iPads work with which Apple Pencil. We compare the two generations of Apple Pencil in Apple Pencil (2018) vs Apple Pencil (2015).

One benefit of the older Apple Pencil, assuming it works with your iPad, is that it is cheaper than the second-generation version at $99/£109 rather than $129/£139.

The original Apple Pencil is almost entirely white, with just a metallic band at the non-writing end by the charging cap. This cap conceals a Lightning port for charging and syncing. When you want to charge the Pencil you can just plug it into the iPad’s Lightning port or use an adapter if your iPad has a USB-C port (as is the case with the iPad 10th gen). There is a downside to charging this way: you can’t use the Pencil while it is charging and it looks pretty ridiculous. Here’s how to check the Apple Pencil’s battery percentage.

The Pencil feels pretty good in the hand, with a nice weight to it. The Apple Pencil and compatible iPads have sensors that can detect the pressure you’re using and the angle you’re holding the stylus at, making it effortless to create lines of different thicknesses. In the Pencil’s tip there are two tilt sensors which the iPad’s display will keep track of to work out the exact orientation and angle of your hands as you draw. For example, you can use the side of the Pencil’s tip for realistic shading like you would with a real pencil lead. The Apple Pencil knows to ignore the wrist and palm

You get a spare tip in the box, but it’s identical to the one that comes attached to the Pencil.

A stylus bearing the name Log might conjure up ideas of a heavy, cumbersome digital pen, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Adonit uses the name to bring attention not only to the tree-born casing of the stylus, but also because each one is made from sustainable wood. This means the grain pattern in every Log is unique, which makes a nice change from the identical plastic that adorns most styli.

In the hand, the Log is light and very comfortable to use, with a matte finish that still provides enough grip for accurate writing. It’s light too, at only 13g, making a mockery of its name once more.

At one end of the wooden casing you’ll find a USB-C charging port, while the other is home to the 1mm tip. The latter is also replaceable, with new nibs available from Adonit for around $15/£15. This means the Log can be kept in good working condition for a long time, which is in keeping with its sustainability motif.

To pair the Log, simply tap the slim button on its side. When the blue light comes on, it automatically connects to the iPad and you’re good to go. It’s not even Bluetooth, so I suspect Adonit is using witchcraft of some sort.

Writing is very smooth, with the tip sliding easily across the display and producing no notable delay or judders that can affect other styluses. I found it excellent for note-taking, even over long sessions as the light frame and consistent performance meant I forgot about the Log and just got on with my writing. Adonit’s palm rejection technology also means that you can happily lean your hand on the iPad display without extraneous characters appearing in the document or other weirdness.

You don’t get the pressure sensitivity found on the Apple Pencil, so you can’t create thicker and thinner lines by pressing harder or softer, which rules it out for those who want to create digital art on their iPad.

Battery life is great, with a one-hour charge resulting in around 24 hours of use. Should you not want to wait that long, then pop it on charge for about five minutes and you’ll be able to write for an hour.

If you’re after a simple stylus for jotting things down and navigating through the iPad interface, then you can’t go wrong with the Adonit Log.

While the Logitech Crayon was originally framed as an education tool, the cheap Apple Pencil alternative is now available to anybody that wants it.

In many ways, the Crayon functions in the same way as the Apple Pencil, complete with easy pairing, reliable palm rejection and tilt support, but there’s one big omission: there’s no pressure sensitivity available here. That’s likely to be a dealbreaker for graphic designers, but if you’re only looking to use a stylus for note-taking, you’re unlikely to notice a difference in performance.

You’ve also got a seven-hour battery life on offer, which should be more than enough for the majority of consumers, and it’s charged up via a hidden Lightning port. That’s not quite as premium as the wireless charging from the second-gen Apple Pencil, but it’s certainly better than the original Apple Pencil.

It’s compatible with the iPad (6-10th gen), iPad mini (5-6th gen), 11in iPad Pro (1-4th gen), 12.9in iPad Pro (3-6th Gen), iPad Air (3-5th gen).

The first generation Apple Pencil, which features later in this round up, works with the current 9th and 10th generation iPads as well as a number of older iPad models.

Another major change is that the 2018 Pencil has no Lightning connector for charging, instead it charges wirelessly when connected to the iPad, which is much neater.

If you want something that feels more like a real pen, fountain pen at that, then the Adonit Star will be a breath of fresh air. The classic design is reminiscent of a Mont Blanc, but without some of the bulk and most of the price. Popping off the cap reveals a fountain-pen style nib, replete with the ink feed on the back, but on closer inspection you’ll see that the metal cuts off early, with a black rubber 1mm fine tip being what will actually touch the screen.

As you might expect, the Star is very much intended for those who want to makes notes and generally just write on their iPad.

If it starts flashing red, this means it time for a recharge, so unscrew the bottom of the pen and there’s a USB-C port.

The second generation Apple Pencil features earlier this round up, but we still recommend the first generation Apple Pencil, which is still on sale.

One benefit of the older Apple Pencil, assuming it works with your iPad, is that it cheaper than the second generation version at $99/£109 rather than $129/£139.

The original Apple Pencil is almost entirely white, with just a metallic band at the non-writing end by the charging cap. This cap conceals a Lightning port for charging and syncing. When you want to charger the Pencil you can just plug it in to the iPads’s Lightning port or use an adapter if your iPad has a USB-C port (as is the case with the iPad 10th gen).

You get a spare tip in the box, but its the identical to the one that comes attached to the Pencil.

Late last year, Anker debuted a 3-in-1 charger available through Apple that offers support for charging an iPhone via MagSafe, an Apple Watch, and AirPods simultaneously, all in a unique cube-like form factor. I found the charger to be a nice bedside charging accessory, so when Anker introduced a similar charger in a different form factor a couple of months ago, I was definitely interested in checking it out.

The Anker 737 MagGo Charger sports another unique design, this time a triangular form factor that offers a fixed-angle ‌MagSafe‌ charger for your ‌iPhone‌, a charging surface for your AirPods tucked inside the base of the triangle, and a fixed arm for charging your Apple Watch. It offers similar charging features as the Cube charger, with official 15-watt ‌MagSafe‌ charging and 5-watt AirPods charging. Unlike the Cube, however, Apple Watch fast charging is unfortunately not supported on the 737 MagGo.

Also unlike the Cube, the 737 MagGo has no moving parts, which has both positive and negatives. The Cube offers a hinged top with an adjustable angle for the ‌MagSafe‌ charging surface, while the Apple Watch arm retracts into the body of the cube. This makes the Cube more compact and portable, but some users expressed concern over a tendency for the unit to tip forward when a phone is attached, while others reported that the spring-loaded retractable Apple Watch arm sometimes required a bit of finessing to function properly and the bulky Apple Watch Ultra just barely fit on the charger.

737 MagGo (left) vs. Cube (right)

The 737 MagGo is definitely bulkier without the collapsing design elements, but I've found that it does help with stability as the fixed angle of the ‌MagSafe‌ surface and the larger base of the triangle keeps everything from tipping over. The fixed Apple Watch arm also comfortably fits even the ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌, though I really wish it had been upgraded with fast-charging support.

In my testing, it took the 737 MagGo charger 2 hours and 43 minutes to charge my ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌ from 20% to 80%, while the same test took just 1 hour and 4 minutes on the Cube charger. That's a very significant difference if you wear your watch most of the time and want to take it off only for short spurts to charge such as while showering or eating.

The Cube was one of the first ‌MagSafe‌ accessories to move away from the traditional Apple-style white charging surface, offering a dark gray surface that blends in with the body of the charger. The same is true with the 737 MagGo, and it's a much more subtle look compared to many other ‌MagSafe‌ chargers. With official 15-watt ‌MagSafe‌ charging, I found it able to charge my ‌iPhone‌ just as quickly as Apple's official chargers and other MagSafe-certified third-party units.

The Apple Watch charging puck features the standard white plastic surface and is oriented in a fixed horizontal position as on the Cube, which means it doesn't play particularly nicely with Nightstand mode on the watch. That's not a huge deal if you're also charging your phone on the angled ‌MagSafe‌ surface and you can just tap your phone's screen to get a glance at the time in the middle of the night, but I think it's worth mentioning.

One of my issues with the Cube's Apple Watch charger was its relatively low height, with bulky bands such as the ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌ Ocean Band potentially interfering with positioning of the watch on the charger. Thankfully, the watch charger on the 737 MagGo sits a good bit higher than on the Cube, making that issue much less of a concern.

Just like the Cube, the 737 MagGo comes with a compact 30-watt USB-C adapter with folding prongs in the U.S., as well as a black 1.5-meter (5-foot) USB-C to USB-C cable to power the accessory. A rubber-like ring on the bottom of the unit protects your surfaces from scratches and other damage while also helping keep the charger in place.

Bottom view of 737 MagGo

When it comes to charging your AirPods or other earphones that support wireless charging, the 737 MagGo includes a weak magnet to help orient MagSafe-compatible AirPods cases on the charger, which is a very nice improvement compared to the 3-in-1 Cube where free placement on the surface can be a little finicky. On the 737 MagGo, you can sort of just toss your MagSafe-compatible AirPods case into the charger and they'll usually nestle right into place.

A thin blue LED along one side of the 737's base also briefly lights up when AirPods charging initiates, letting you know you've got a good connection. If your AirPods aren't seated properly, the light will blink to alert you. Otherwise the light remains off except for a brief moment when the unit is plugged in, so nighttime disruptions are not an issue.

AirPods charging status light

The 737 MagGo charger comes in just a bit cheaper than the 3-in-1 Cube at $139.99 compared to $149.99, and Anker is currently offering a 15% off coupon code for the 737 MagGo on both its own site and on Amazon that brings the price down to around $119.00.

That's still on the pricey side for chargers, but it's not wildly out of line for accessories like this with official ‌MagSafe‌ certification. My biggest gripe with the 737 MagGo, however, is the lack of Apple Watch fast-charging support. Granted, I'm usually charging overnight when speed isn't a factor, but there are times when I also want to use it during the day, and particularly with the larger battery in the ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌, fast charging is a key feature that's missing in this accessory.

Some users might find that missing feature a reasonable trade-off for the cheaper price point compared to the Cube model, especially with the current discounts available on the 737 MagGo, but it may be a dealbreaker for others.

Otherwise, I really like the overall design. It's not super portable, but on a nightstand or desk it offers some visual interest without being overwhelming, and the color-matched ‌MagSafe‌ charging surface maintains a relatively coherent overall look.

The 737 MagGo is definitely bulkier without the collapsing design elements, but I’ve found that it does help with stability as the fixed angle of the ‌MagSafe‌ surface and the larger base of the triangle keeps everything from tipping over.

That’s a very significant difference if you wear your watch most of the time and want to take it off only for short spurts to charge such as while showering or eating.

The Cube was one of the first ‌MagSafe‌ accessories to move away from the traditional Apple-style white charging surface, offering a dark gray surface that blends in with the body of the charger. The same is true with the 737 MagGo, and it’s a much more subtle look compared to many other ‌MagSafe‌ chargers. With official 15-watt ‌MagSafe‌ charging, I found it able to charge my ‌iPhone‌ just as quickly as Apple’s official chargers and other MagSafe-certified third-party units.

The Apple Watch charging puck features the standard white plastic surface and is oriented in a fixed horizontal position as on the Cube, which means it doesn’t play particularly nicely with Nightstand mode on the watch. That’s not a huge deal if you’re also charging your phone on the angled ‌MagSafe‌ surface and you can just tap your phone’s screen to get a glance at the time in the middle of the night, but I think it’s worth mentioning.

After GM’s announcement that its electric fleet would not support CarPlay, the company has some real CurrentC energy.

You’ll forget all about the system you prefer!

“GM thinks it can wean you off Apple CarPlay and Android Auto”

Car shoppers told the Detroit Free Press that the move was “a dealbreaker” and a “huge blunder.” Auto analysts were left scratching their heads, noting that demand for CarPlay and Android Auto was “massive” and that GM was taking a huge risk by cutting off access.

It’s baffling! Short-sighted! Pure hubris!

But let’s allow a guy with a title that absolutely screams “fantastic user experience” get in a word.

But Scott Miller, vice president of software defined vehicle and operating systems at General Motors…

What does that even mean? The Macalope had to look it up to make sure The Verge hadn’t taken any poetic license but, nope! That’s his real title. Hmm, maybe his LinkedIn about statement will help.

Transforming GM from an automaker to a platform innovator, one day at a time.

Nope! No help there.

ANY-way, this guy…

…thinks that demand [for CarPlay] is a just sign that customers are still seeking an even better experience when getting in their cars.

“Your love of the sweet taste of rich, creamery butter just means you’re dying for our new product ‘Better Than Butter’. Made from a new liquid polymer, ‘Better Than Butter’ is… Where are you going?”

Meanwhile, over at Ford: [unrelenting peals of laughter]

Ford CEO Jim Farley told The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern that unlike some of its competitors, his company would be sticking with CarPlay, thank you very much. Needless to say, he doesn’t think much of GM’s decision.

”Yeah, how about that?” [laughs]

It is funny!

This isn’t exactly the first time Farley has had… let’s just say “opinions” about GM.

“F—- GM. I hate them and their company and what they stand for.”

Oh. Wow. Okay. He also didn’t have a great outlook on Tesla’s fortunes, stopping short of using any four-letter words to describe Elon Musk’s stewardship of the brand.

”…there’s no doubt about it, the demand for Tesla is changing and in some sense is deteriorating.”

While Farley is happy to work with Apple and Google, he hasn’t completely ceded the Ford user experience to them.

”There’s going to be a lot more going on inside your car than a phone.”

“Hey, hey, there’s a lot of data to hoover up! We can share!”

Unlike GM, Ford seems to have gotten the memo on these new “smartphones” all the kids are carrying around these days, much like you and I used to strap an abacus to our chests back in the day in case we ever needed to add more than three numbers together while we were out in the fields hoeing and tilling and, ugh, the reaping. So much reaping.

“The interior has to be really well done. But in terms of content? We kind of lost that battle 10 years ago. So get real with it, because you’re not going to make a ton of money on content inside the vehicle.”

Farley considers Apple and Google’s role to be solely in the “content” (blech) space within Ford autos. But he’s happy to have them along for the ride. He’s got good reason to want to CarPlay, anyway.

”70 percent of our Ford customers in the US are Apple customers. Why would I go to an Apple customer and say ‘Good luck!’ That, like, doesn’t seem customer centric.”

Right? There are probably a lot of people who don’t care or don’t understand what CarPlay is and will just take whatever system their preferred vehicle ships with. You know, the kind of people who buy those Calvin peeing stickers in bulk.

IDG

But… there are a lot who really do care. A lot. And for the people who prefer CarPlay, like this mythical beast, GM cars are now completely out of consideration.

And for what? Does GM really think it’s going to be able to sell people “content” (hurg)? Who is thinking “Boy, you know, I pay for Apple One on my Apple devices but what I really want to do is pay again for content in my car. And, ideally, the user experience should be worse!”?

Because, c’mon, Scott, get real. It’s gonna be worse.

There are two kinds of people who will choose to get their content from a car manufacturer inside the car: people who are rich enough to pay for it from both Apple/Google/Amazon and the car manufacturer and not have it materially impact their bottom line and long haul truckers who essentially live inside their cabin. Basically, anyone who’s gone to the bathroom inside their vehicle, yeah, that person might be willing to pay an automaker for music.

Check with actual human people and you will find that most of them spend way more time looking at their smartphones than driving their cars. (A lot of them are so hooked on their smartphones that they can’t even put them down while driving their car, but that’s another problem.) They like their smartphones. A lot. Making them learn another system for the small part of the day they’re in their cars is an uphill battle.

Well, good luck to you, GM! You’re gonna need it.

Ford CEO Jim Farley said that Ford has no plans to drop support for CarPlay due to its popularity with Ford customers. He made the comment in an interview with The Wall Street Journal‘s Joanna Stern.

“70 percent of our Ford customers in the U.S. are Apple customers. Why would I go to an Apple customer and say good luck?” he said.

Farley was commenting on car manufacturers that do not support ‌CarPlay‌, like Tesla and General Motors. Tesla has never added ‌CarPlay‌ support into its vehicles, and GM earlier this year announced plans to phase out support for both ‌CarPlay‌ and Android Auto starting in 2023.

Ford CEO @jimfarley98 says he’s sticking with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and his reason makes A LOT of sense https://t.co/0ZEvV5icyD

— Joanna Stern (@JoannaStern) May 3, 2023

GM plans go with a built-in infotainment system co-developed with Google as it transitions from combustion vehicles to electric vehicles. ‌CarPlay‌ will be available in non-electric models, but GM ultimately has plans to switch to an all-electric lineup by 2035.

iPhone users have been asking Tesla to support ‌CarPlay‌ for years, and unsurprisingly, GM’s announcement has not been particularly popular with those who are in the Apple ecosystem. By removing control of the infotainment system from Apple, GM and Tesla have access to more data about their customers, and can also push vehicle-related digital subscription services.

Farley doesn’t think there’s money to be made in the content that car owners consume in their vehicles, with Ford instead focusing on safety, security, autonomy, and productivity features.

In terms of content, we kind of lost that battle 10 years ago. So like get real with it, because you’re not going to make a ton of money on content inside the vehicle. It’s gonna be safety, security, partial autonomy, and productivity in our eyes. So that relationship for content is between you, The Wall Street Journal, and the customer. I don’t want to get in the middle of that, but Tesla and other companies believe differently. They want to have complete control over the interior experience.

Having a familiar navigation and infotainment system in the car is appealing to customers who don’t want to have to transition between two incompatible software setups, so GM’s decision to drop support for ‌CarPlay‌ and Android Auto will be off-putting to those who have become used to the way that in-car solutions from Apple and Google extend the smartphone experience to the vehicle. No ‌CarPlay‌ will be a dealbreaker for some customers, so it will be interesting to see how GM’s transition affects future vehicle sales.

Starting in 2023, Apple plans to roll out a next-generation CarPlay experience that will offer even deeper integration into new vehicles for manufacturers who choose to continue to offer ‌CarPlay‌ as an option.
