Apple, the company synonymous with cutting-edge technology and sleek design, has consistently captivated audiences with its innovative devices. From the revolutionary iPhone to the ever-evolving Apple Watch, their products have transformed how we interact with the world around us. But what does the future hold for Apple?

With rumors swirling and patents hinting at the next big thing, one thing is clear: wearables and augmented reality (AR) are poised to be at the forefront of Apple’s future endeavors. This article delves into the exciting possibilities that await us, exploring potential breakthroughs in these burgeoning fields.

Wearables: Beyond Fitness Trackers

Apple Watch, though undoubtedly successful, currently functions primarily as a fitness tracker and notification center. However, the future of wearables is far more expansive. Experts anticipate advancements in:

Health Monitoring: Imagine seamless integration with blood glucose monitoring, real-time stress analysis, and even early detection of health risks. Apple’s focus on health and wellness suggests wearables with advanced health-tracking capabilities are a strong possibility.

Biometric Authentication: Replacing passwords and PINs with facial or fingerprint recognition embedded in wearables could offer enhanced security and convenience.

Fashion Fusion: The lines between technology and fashion will continue to blur, with wearables seamlessly integrated into stylish accessories like bracelets and rings.

Augmented Reality: Merging the Physical and Digital

AR has the potential to revolutionize how we interact with information and our surroundings. Apple, with its ARKit development platform, has already laid the groundwork for innovative AR experiences. The future could see:

AR Glasses: Imagine lightweight, stylish glasses overlaying digital information onto the real world. Imagine directions hovering before you, product information displayed on shelves, or educational content brought to life in museums.

Gaming and Entertainment: Immerse yourself in interactive games or augmented narratives, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.

Productivity and Education: Imagine learning anatomy through interactive 3D models or visualizing complex data overlaid on physical objects.

Breakthroughs at the Intersection of Wearables and AR

The true magic might lie where wearables and AR converge. Imagine:

Personalized Health Coaching: Imagine AR wearables projecting personalized exercise routines onto your surroundings, guiding you through workouts in real-time.

Smart Assistants in Your Field of View: Imagine receiving step-by-step instructions for repairs or DIY projects overlaid on the objects you’re working on.

Enhanced Communication and Collaboration: Imagine sharing 3D models or annotating real-world objects in real-time with colleagues or friends, regardless of location.

The Road Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities

While the potential for these advancements is undeniable, challenges remain. Battery life, miniaturization of technology, and ensuring seamless user experiences are just a few hurdles to overcome. Additionally, ethical considerations regarding privacy and data security in AR environments need careful attention.

Despite the challenges, Apple’s history of innovation suggests they are well-positioned to address these concerns and lead the way in this exciting new era. The next generation of Apple devices, with their potential to seamlessly integrate wearables and AR, could fundamentally change how we live, work, and interact with the world around us. As we eagerly await Apple’s next unveilings, one thing is certain: the future is brimming with possibilities, and Apple is likely to be at the forefront of shaping it.

Apple today seeded the third betas of upcoming iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 updates to developers for testing purposes, with the software coming two weeks after the release of the second betas.

Registered developers are able to opt into the betas by opening up the Settings app, going to the Software Update section, tapping on the “Beta Updates” option, and toggling on the iOS 16 Developer Beta. Note that an Apple ID associated with a developer account is required to download and install the beta.

‌iOS 17‌ is a major update that introduces a customized look for each person that calls, with the person who places the call able to customize their look. Live voicemails let you see a transcript of a message someone is leaving in real time so you can choose to pick up the phone if you want, and voice messages people send in iMessage are now transcribed into text. You can also record a video or audio message when someone misses your FaceTime call, and ‌FaceTime‌ works on the Apple TV through Continuity functionality.

In Messages, apps have been moved to a new tucked-away interface for a cleaner look, and there is a new Check In feature that is designed to let your friends and family keep an eye on you when you’re traveling. Check In automatically notifies friends or family members when you arrive at a destination, such as home. Locations can also now be shared directly from the Messages app.

In a group chat, there’s a catch-up arrow so you can see the first message you haven’t seen in a conversation, and with search filters, you can more easily find what you’re looking for. Stickers have been overhauled, and all emoji are now stickers, living alongside sticker packs and Memoji. Using the remove from background feature in ‌iOS 17‌, you can turn the subject from any image into a sticker.

With StandBy, an iPhone placed horizontally turns into a little home hub that displays information like the calendar, time, home controls, and more, and Live Activities can be displayed in full screen too.

Widgets on the Home Screen are interactive, so you can do things like check off an item on a to-do list or turn off the lights without having to open an app. AirDrop has been improved and there’s a NameDrop function for sharing contacts quickly, plus you can hold two iPhones together to start a SharePlay session. SharePlay also now works with CarPlay so passengers can play their music in the car too.

Other new features include a journaling app coming later this year, AirPlay in select hotel rooms, improvements to AirPods Pro 2 thanks to a new Adaptive Audio feature, offline Maps, Siri that does not require the “Hey” activation, and improvements to search and spotlight.

While today’s beta is limited to developers, Apple said there will be a public beta in July.

Foxconn, a major assembler for Apple, reported a 13.8% year-on-year drop in second-quarter revenue on Wednesday, but said it expects third-quarter revenue to be brighter ahead of the peak shopping season.

Foxconn, formally called Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd and the world’s largest contract electronics maker, said revenue in the April-June period reached T$1.3 trillion ($41.76 billion), in line with its expectations.

For smart consumer electronics products, which include smartphones and are the company’s main business driver, revenue in the second quarter dropped, coming off a higher base in the year ago period, it said in a statement without giving details.

For the month of June, sales fell 19.7% year-on-year, though at T$422.8 billion it was still the second highest figure on record for the same period.

“With the second half of the year peak season currently underway, operations will gradually ramp up,” the company said. “The outlook for the third quarter, which will be better than the second quarter, is expected to increase at an on quarter pace higher than seen in the previous two years. When compared to the pre-pandemic period, the growth rate is expected to be approximately on par.”

For this week’s giveaway, we’ve teamed up with GRID Studio to offer MacRumors readers a chance to win a 15-inch MacBook Air. For those unfamiliar with GRID Studio, it is a company that acquires vintage Apple products, disassembles them, and turns them into art for Apple fans.

Each piece features a deconstructed Apple device with the components artfully displayed behind a glass frame that can be hung on the wall to enhance an office space, living room, or other area. Pricing on GRID artwork starts at around $40, and goes up based on complexity.

The GRID 1 is one of GRID Studio’s most popular offerings because it showcases the original iPhone, an important piece of Apple’s history. Priced at $400, the GRID 1 features the internal parts of an ‌iPhone‌, with each component separated out and labeled so you can see everything that made the original ‌iPhone‌ special at a glance. The ‌iPhone‌’s shell is displayed next to the power button, headphone socket, speaker, logic board, circuit board, ear piece, and more. Real batteries are not included because of the hazard of using that component, but stand-ins are available.

GRID Studio doesn’t just focus on iPhones, with other devices available as well. If you’re an iPad fan, a disassembled version of the original ‌iPad‌ is available for $400. Like the ‌iPhone‌ version, the GRID iPad features the casing of the first ‌iPad‌ along with an array of the internals, all labeled and aesthetically arranged.

Fans of Apple’s chip work can get the GRID Apple A Series Mobile Processors set, a $99 piece of art that features actual Apple A-series chips arranged in a timeline so you can see the improvements over the years. The piece includes everything from the 2010 A4 chip to the A14 Bionic released in 2020.

GRID Studio has started branching out beyond device teardowns and has a fun Apple badge collection that features a frame filled with pins representing Apple products over the years.

The $500 Apple Badge Collection includes 80 badges that start with the 1976 Apple I and run through the 2022 Studio Display. Each pin is highly detailed, and there are also sets that focus just on the iPhone and iPad or the Mac.

Apple has been granted a U.S. patent entitled “Method And Device For Visual Augmentation Of Sporting Events” relating to the company’s forthcoming Apple Vision Pro spatial computer.

Apple patent application illustration shows an extended reality environment based on a physical environment including a football game

Dennis Sellers for Apple World Today:

The newly granted patent involves systems, methods, and devices for visual augmentation of sporting events. Apple notes that folks have become accustomed to supplemental infor being displayed while watching a sporting event on television. For example, a yellow first-down line may be displayed over the field during broadcast of a football game.

As another example, the score may be displayed in the lower right corner during broadcast of a basketball game. However, when physically present at a sporting event, a person watching the sporting event live does not receive the same experience. Apple wants to change this — well, at least for folks wearing Vision Pros at such events.

Apple’s method includes detecting, in the image of the sporting event, an object. The method includes obtaining data regarding a current state of the sporting event with respect to the object. The method includes displaying, on the display in association with the physical environment, a representation of the data.

“Passkey” is the name for a simplified login process to websites that arrived in its full glory later this year with macOS 13 Ventura, iOS 16, and iPadOS 16. A passkey relies on broadly supported industry standards to let you carry out an encrypted login with almost no effort on your part after the initial setup.

You can try a passkey without installing the public betas of these upcoming operating systems, as Apple built passkey support in a preview form into Safari across all its operating systems in iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and Safari 15 with macOS 12 Monterey. With the full release of passkeys in a few weeks or months, and Google and Microsoft’s announced support for compatible technology, you’re likely to see options to add a passkey login at many websites this fall.

Here’s how the process works.

Apple IDs

Beginning with iOS 17 and macOS 14 Sonoma, your Apple ID will support passkey authentication. Anywhere you need to sign in with your Apple ID, including websites and icloud.com, you’ll have two options to log in: with a standard password or by pressing the “Continue with Apple” button that will display a QR code that can be scanned with your iPhone’s camera to create the unique code.

Enroll at a website

A passkey comprises a paired set of encryption keys, known generally as public-key cryptography. When you visit a server that supports WebAuthn (the technology required to accept, store, and interact with a passkey), your browser will present the public key of the encryption pair. The public key can’t be used for login but rather to prove your identity: you possess the private key, which is created on your device and never leaves it for a login.

To enroll, you visit a website that offers passkey support. A site might state it supports passkeys generically, say that it has WebAuthn support, or declare that it’s FIDO2, CTAP, or “multi-device FIDO credential” compatible. All of those terms should mean you can use an Apple (or Google or Microsoft) passkey as your login credential. (FIDO2 is the name given by the FIDO Alliance trade group, a key part of making passkeys and WebAuthn happen, and which Apple, Microsoft, and Google are members of.)

The process will work very similarly to when you enroll at a site for two-factor authentication (2FA) or if you have previously used a hardware key for WebAuthn, like those made by Yubico:

Log in using your existing username and password.

The site may prompt you for additional verification. This might be a link sent via email, a texted code, or a prompt for a 2FA acknowledgment with a code or via an app you already have installed on your iPhone or iPad.

The site’s security section lets you choose to use a passkey or one of the alternate names above.

The web server pushes a request to your browser to provide encryption information.

You’re prompted to approve this request with Touch ID, Face ID, or your device password, depending on what’s available and enabled.

If you successfully validate your identity, your device generates the public/private key pair. The private key is stored on your device and never sent to the remote site.

Your browser sends the public key along with a cryptographically signed message that the server can validate using the provided public key: only someone whose device holds the private key can produce a verifiable message.

The web server stores your public key for your future logins.

Setting up a passkey login may disable 2FA on your account or allow you to opt for a passkey login instead of a 2FA pathway. A passkey provides proof of possession of both a secret and the device on which it’s stored, effectively two factors. (Some higher-security sites and services may still require 2FA instead of or in addition to a passkey.)

You can see the passkey process at work with some of the underlying technical pieces exposed at Webauthn.me, a site made by Auth0, a provider of authentication services. Some production sites currently offer passkey-compatible logins, but they’re fairly few at the moment. You could set a Google or Dropbox account to use a “security key” and use a passkey instead. See below for my experience with that.

Log in with a passkey

At an enrolled site, you can use a stored passkey the next time you need to log in. You might have noticed that many websites have begun to split the user name or account email submission from a password submission–that appears to be prep for passkeys.

With a site fully ready for passkeys, you’ll tap or click in a username or account email field and be prompted by Safari to validate a passkey login. In some cases, Safari may first ask you if you want to allow Touch ID or “security key” logins on the site; click Allow to continue. Then you can authenticate via Touch ID, Face ID, or your device password just as during enrollment. That’s it! Using the Webauthn.me site noted above, you can test this in Step 4 of its process.

You may be asked to allow secure logins on a site before you can login for the first time after enrollment with a passkey.

Passwords hold passkey entries starting with this fall’s operating system releases.

With some sites that have WebAuthn support but aren’t yet fully aligned with the simplified passkey process, you may be prompted to perform a normal user name and password login before the site initiates the sequence that asks your browser for a passkey.

I was able to enroll with a passkey at Dropbox by choosing the Security Key option and following the prompts within Safari for macOS. (While logged into Dropbox via Safari, click your avatar in the upper-right corner, click the Security link, and click Add next to “Security keys.” When it asks if you’ve inserted the key, confirm you have.)

Subsequent logins worked in Safari for macOS but not in Safari for iOS, probably because of a lack of iCloud Keychain sync support prior to the release of the new operating systems. In iOS 16, iPadOS 15, and Ventura, with iCloud Keychain enabled, passkeys will sync and be listed in Settings > Passwords in iOS/iPadOS and System Settings > Passwords in Ventura.

Apple will let you share passkeys with other Apple users by securely sending them over AirDrop. This will share both the public and private key and give people the same degree of account access as if you had given them the username, password, and two-factor token for your account.

Login from other devices

Some sites will let you specify a passkey login as your sole method to gain access. So what if you’re trying to log in from a device that doesn’t have your passkey stored, like a communal or family computer, a device at work, or one you have access to while traveling? Or you need to use a Windows system or Android phone to access a site due to features specific to those platforms? Apple demonstrated a clever approach in its introduction to passkeys at the 2022 Worldwide Developer Conference that requires a QR code and Bluetooth.

The process works like this:

On a device with an operating system or browser new enough to support WebAuthn logins, when you enter your account name at a website with which you use a passkey.

The site will query the browser for a passkey, and the browser will discover it has none. You can then click to provide a passkey via a proxy, such as by clicking “Add a new phone.”

The site sends a query that causes the browser to display a QR Code.

On your iPhone or iPad, you scan the QR Code and tap the prompt “Sign in with a passkey.”

On your device, click Continue and then approve the login with Touch ID, Face ID, or your device password.

The browser shows you’re logged in.

On a device that doesn’t have your passkey, a QR code paired with Bluetooth will allow a secure login that doesn’t give up your secrets or allow for phishing.

Apple

During this process, the device on which the QR Code is displayed and your iPhone or iPad quietly establish a connection via Bluetooth and exchange key information. This lets your device get assurance that the login is happening using a piece of gear that’s nearby to prevent remote attacks, and the Bluetooth backchannel an encrypted channel separate from the browser connection, avoiding phishing attacks that present fake logins.

After you’ve authenticated your login on that other device, your session proceeds as normal. Make sure and log out when you’re done to clear the state.

The future is passkeys

The simplicity of passkeys hides the sophistication. For once, we get both ease, no overhead for managing the process, and the highest possible level of security. Each login is unique, stored for you, and verified in both directions—by your device and by the site—to ensure only the person with access to your device can log into the site.

Apple today seeded the second betas of upcoming iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 updates to developers for testing purposes, with the software coming two weeks after the release of the first betas following the WWDC keynote event.

While today’s beta is limited to developers, Apple will be providing a public beta later this summer.
