In a world increasingly driven by technological advancements, the influence of major tech companies extends beyond the realms of innovation

In a world increasingly driven by technological advancements, the influence of major tech companies extends beyond the realms of innovation and market competition. Apple, one of the leading players in the tech industry, possesses the potential to impact the global political landscape. This article explores the various ways in which Apple could shape the future of the global political environment.

1. Economic Power and Influence

Apple’s significant economic prowess positions it as a key player in the global market. The company’s financial impact on countries and economies is substantial, with a vast network of suppliers, manufacturers, and employees worldwide. As Apple continues to grow, its economic influence could potentially give it a seat at the table in international economic discussions and negotiations.

2. International Trade and Supply Chain Dynamics

The intricate web of Apple’s supply chain spans multiple countries, and any disruptions or changes in its operations can have ripple effects across the globe. Apple’s decisions regarding suppliers, manufacturing locations, and trade partnerships can inadvertently shape geopolitical dynamics. The company’s commitment to ethical sourcing and sustainable practices could set industry standards and influence global trade policies.

3. Data Privacy and Security Advocacy

With the increasing concern over data privacy and cybersecurity, Apple’s commitment to protecting user data sets it apart from many other tech giants. As governments grapple with regulatory frameworks for the digital age, Apple’s stance on privacy could influence the creation of global standards. The company’s efforts to resist government requests for user data may contribute to the development of international norms surrounding digital privacy.

4. Global Accessibility and Digital Inclusion

Apple’s products and services have a widespread global reach, contributing to increased digital accessibility. The company’s initiatives to bridge the digital divide and promote inclusivity may have broader implications for education, economic development, and social progress worldwide. Apple’s role in providing technology to underserved communities can influence global efforts to ensure digital inclusion for all.

5. Environmental Leadership and Sustainability Practices

As environmental concerns take center stage in political discourse, Apple’s commitment to sustainability could impact global environmental policies. The company’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions, use renewable energy, and promote eco-friendly practices set a precedent for the tech industry. Apple’s leadership in environmental initiatives may encourage other companies and governments to prioritize sustainability in their policies and practices.

6. Diplomacy Through Innovation

Apple’s focus on innovation and research and development can act as a form of soft diplomacy. Collaborations with international partners, investments in cutting-edge technologies, and participation in global innovation ecosystems can foster diplomatic relations between nations. Apple’s role in driving technological progress may contribute to international cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, healthcare, and renewable energy.

Conclusion

As Apple continues to evolve and expand its influence, the company has the potential to play a significant role in shaping the future of the global political environment. From economic impact and trade dynamics to data privacy advocacy and environmental leadership, Apple’s decisions and actions resonate far beyond the tech industry, influencing the broader geopolitical landscape. It remains to be seen how Apple’s role in global politics will unfold, but its position as a major player in the technology sector undoubtedly positions it at the intersection of innovation and international affairs.

Apple continued to excel in China’s smartphone market, exhibiting an 8% YoY increase without facing any significant competition during the 618 sales period in 2023 (June 1-June 18), even as China’s smartphone sales fell 8% YoY, indicating weak customer demand for smartphones amid economic headwinds, according to Counterpoint’s 618 Sales Period Thematic Report.

Vivo secured the largest share in the 618 sales period this year, capturing 18.2% of the market. Vivo was followed by Apple, which only sells premium smartphones, at 17.9% and HONOR at 15.4%.

The weak sales during the 618 period also fell short of earlier expectations, despite efforts by most Android OEMs to entice consumers with price cuts. Due to the uncertain economic outlook, consumers were more cautious in their spending, including on durable goods like smartphones.

Apple's market capitalization has once again hit $3 trillion as the company's shares opened at $191.78 this morning, up just over 1% compared to yesterday's closing price. It has been nearly 18 months since Apple very briefly hit the milestone in January 2022 before declining along with the overall market.

At the beginning of this year, Apple's value dipped below $2 trillion, but the company's shares have risen 53% so far this year, pushing them back to all-time highs in recent days. Reaching the $3 trillion market capitalization milestone again has required a slightly higher share price than it did 18 months ago as Apple has continued to aggressively buy back its stock, reducing the overall share count of the company.

Apple saw very strong revenue growth during the pandemic as its products and services were in particularly high demand as more people worked, learned, and connected with others from home. The company's momentum slowed along with iPhone production issues and general economic concerns in 2022, but optimism around the company has returned in 2023.
Tag: AAPL

This article, "Apple's Market Valuation Returns to $3 Trillion After Almost 18 Months" first appeared on MacRumors.com

Discuss this article in our forums
<br

At the beginning of this year, Apple’s value dipped below $2 trillion, but the company’s shares have risen 53% so far this year, pushing them back to all-time highs in recent days.

The company’s momentum slowed along with iPhone production issues and general economic concerns in 2022, but optimism around the company has returned in 2023.

Sam Esmail’s years-in-the making adaptation of Fritz Lang’s classic 1927 sci-fi film “Metropolis” has been permanently shut down due to labor unrest against the background of economic headwinds.

Nellie Andreeva for Deadline:

The big-budget UCP [Universal Content Productions] series for Apple TV+, which had been prepping in Australia, has permanently shut down. The crew was just notified that the ambitious project will not move forward with production, which had been targeting a summer start.

UCP confirmed to Deadline that Metropolis has been scrapped. “Push costs and uncertainty related to the ongoing strike led to this difficult decision,” a rep for the studio said.

Metropolis had been in limbo for the past seven weeks. Since production drafts of the scripts for the large-scope, special effects-heavy series had not been finished before the May 2 start of the writers strike, that delayed setting budgets and other key elements of pre-production.

Because of the timing, UCP was faced with rising costs related to pushing the start of production, building and holding expansive stages, labor an VFX work — while not knowing when filming could begin due to the writers strike (and the prospect of a potential SAG-AFTRA strike). After evaluating the money spent so far and the risk of going forward, UCP opted to not proceed with the series and notified their partners at Apple TV+.

The filming was to take place in the state of Victoria where it was projected to create nearly 4,000 jobs, making use of one of the world’s largest ‘virtual production’ infrastructures, according to the April 2022 announcement.

MacDailyNews Take: Horrible news. Hopefully, Esmail can revive Metropolis with UCP or another production compnay – and for Apple TV+ – sometime in the future!

When Apple released the 15-inch MacBook Air at WWDC, no one was surprised that the new laptop was merely a larger version of the 13-inch MacBook Air with a slightly large screen, trackpad, and body. What was surprising was the price: Instead of adding $200 or $300 to the price of the existing MacBook Air, making the new model $1,399 or $1,499, Apple priced the new MacBook Air at $1,299 and cut the price of the 13-inch model by $100.

And if you drill down, the price is even more surprising. The 15-inch Air starts with the “full” M2 Pro processor with 10 GPU cores, which is a $100 upgrade on the 13-inch MacBook Air. That means the 15-inch MacBook Air costs the same as the 13-inch MacBook Air did in May. That’s what you would call a pleasant surprise.

Does this mean Apple is rethinking its pricing strategy? Perhaps. Then again, Apple also announced the $6,999 Mac Pro and the $3,499 Vision Pro, the two highest-priced products in its catalog. But still, it’s hard not to wonder if the MacBook Air’s aggressive pricing is the start of a new trend.

This brings us to the iPhone 15 Pro. Reports have been swirling for months that Apple is planning on raising the price of the Pro models. Just this week, in fact, China-based Economic Daily News reported that the phones may cost as much as $200 more than the equivalent iPhone 14 Pro models, meaning that the iPhone 15 Pro Max could start at $1,299 and top out at $1,800 or higher if Apple offers a 2TB option.

It bears noting that similar rumors last year claimed the iPhone 14 Pro Max would also get a price hike, but Apple opted to keep the pricing the same. But the rumors about this year’s phone suggest a much bigger upgrade than last year, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the high-end iPhone get a higher price tag.

Apple clearly is feeling the pinch of flagging Mac sales, so the MacBook Air’s price cut, while surprising, makes sense. It’s not the same with the iPhone, whose sales remain healthy. So we’d bet the rumors are right this year and for the first time in years, Apple ups the price of the Pro models by at least $100 each—though it would certainly be nice if Apple surprised us with the iPhone too.

So we’d bet the rumors are right this year and for the first time in years, Apple ups the price of the Pro models by at least $100 each.

Apple has hit a new all-time high ahead of its most significant product launch event in nearly a decade, after benefiting from a broader rotation back into technology stocks.

Shares of Apple were up 1.6% at $183.62 in morning trading Monday. The stock needs to finish above the $182.01 closing level it achieved on Jan. 3, 2022, in order to record a new all-time closing high. It has already traded as high as 183.86 Monday, surpassing the record intraday level of $182.94, which was set on Jan. 4, 2022, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

Ryan Vlastelica for Bloomberg News:

The stock has risen consistently throughout 2023, with investors viewing it as a safe haven in periods of economic risk or uncertainty given the strength of its balance sheet, its capital-return program, and its durable revenue streams. In addition, its recent results topped expectations, thanks to a rebound in its iPhone and growth in its Services business.

“Even with how much it has risen, it still feels like a quality company, with a lot of cash, continued innovation, a fortress balance sheet, and a large customer base upgrading their products,” said Devon Drew, chief executive officer of DFD Partners. “It should continue to grow, but it can also weather any storm. That means it works in both risk-on and risk-off environments, and that makes me very excited to own it.”

At the current price, Apple is poised to add $16.5 billion of market cap, putting it even closer to a historic $3 trillion valuation. It is the largest public company by far, and comprises about 7.5% of the weight of the S&P 500 Index.

MacDailyNews Take: As we wrote on December 22, 2022 on which day Apple traded as low as $130.30:

Back up the Tonka truck for Apple at these discount prices, kids! You’ll likely never time the market perfectly, but you can make a lot worse investments than buying Apple over time, especially when it’s beaten down, reinvesting the dividends every quarter, and holding for the long term.

The App Store continues to create incredible opportunity for developers around the world, with more than 90 percent of the billings and sales accruing solely to developers and businesses of all sizes — without any commission paid to Apple. Additionally, new analysis from the Progressive Policy Institute found the iOS app economy now supports more than 4.8 million jobs across the U.S. and Europe, with approximately 2.4 million in each region.

Today, developers on the App Store have more ways than ever to monetize their apps and build successful businesses. The economists from Analysis Group estimate that last year, App Store developers generated $910 billion in total billings and sales from the sale of physical goods and services, $109 billion from in-app advertising, and $104 billion for digital goods and services.

“We’ve never been more hopeful about — or more inspired by — the incredible community of developers around the world,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in a statement. “As this report shows, the App Store is a vibrant, innovative marketplace where opportunity thrives, and we’re as committed as ever to investing in developers’ success and the app economy’s future.”

The Analysis Group study takes a closer look at the key drivers behind the growth in the App Store ecosystem — including rebounding demand for sectors like travel and ride-hailing, and strong growth in advertising spend in apps like social media and retail apps.

Developer billings and sales increased by 27 percent between 2019 and 2020; 27 percent between 2020 and 2021; and 29 percent between 2021 and 2022. Small developers in particular found tremendous success on the App Store — outpacing larger developers by growing their revenue by 71 percent between 2020 and 2022. The economists at Analysis Group believe growth rates of this kind are positive indicators, consistent with a flourishing marketplace full of dynamism, innovation, and competition.

All told, since 2019, U.S. developers’ billings and sales have increased by more than 80 percent. In Europe, developers’ billings and sales since 2019 saw an above average increase of 116 percent.

The App Store’s engine of commerce provides Apple developers around the world with a global distribution platform that supports more than 195 local payment methods and 44 currencies across 175 storefronts. It also allowed developers to reach users across borders: In 2022, 54 percent of downloads occurred in storefronts outside of developers’ home countries. The App Store attracted over 650 million average weekly visitors worldwide in 2022, according to new data from Apple. And users downloaded and redownloaded apps an average of more than 747 million and 1.5 billion times each week in 2022, respectively.

Strong Growth in Billings and Sales Across App Categories

Released earlier today, the new study from economists at Analysis Group, titled “The Continued Growth and Resilience of Apple’s App Store Ecosystem,” draws from a wide range of economic data that speaks to developers’ growth on the App Store. The study found developers’ billings and sales facilitated by the App Store grew across a wide variety of categories.

For example, as restrictions eased in many parts of the world, app categories like travel and ride-hailing saw demand rebound significantly. Travel sales made on iOS apps increased by 84 percent in 2022, alongside a 45 percent increase in sales on ride-hailing apps.

Food and grocery sales were also among the fastest-growing app categories. Since 2019, iOS app-based food delivery and pickup sales more than doubled, and grocery sales more than tripled. In addition, enterprise apps have grown in popularity with companies around the world in the last few years. In 2022, these apps represented one of the fastest-growing digital goods and services categories in Analysis Group’s estimate of billings and sales. The highest growth in digital goods and services was seen in the app-based entertainment category, as notable trends like the creator economy have emerged in recent years, as well as the prominence of apps that support this area.

The broad-based growth of developer businesses — across app categories — speaks to the many ways Apple users have come to rely on their favorite apps in so many aspects of their lives. Whether for gaming or productivity, education or social media, apps are helping people around the world stay connected, creative, and entertained.

The App Store Turns Fifteen

Fifteen years since its launch in 2008, the App Store has never offered developers more opportunities, or Apple users more apps that enrich their lives. That success comes as Apple continues investing in the future of the app economy. By offering a safe and trusted marketplace for users, and powerful tools that help developers make great apps, the App Store has created an incredible economic opportunity for global app creators.

All told, iOS developers have earned more than $320 billion on the App Store from 2008 to 2022. The Analysis Group study found that iOS users have downloaded apps more than 370 billion times from 2008 to 2022. And today, the App Store has more than 123 times as many apps — nearly 1.8 million — to choose from, compared to the thousands available on the App Store at the end of 2008.

Today’s developers also have more options to monetize their businesses, including in-app purchases and subscriptions; more developer tools, including over 40 SDKs and 250,000 APIs; and educational resources like Apple’s Developer Academies, Entrepreneur Camp, and other programs that teach coding and business development skills.

The App Store’s technologies and services support a wide range of app businesses, including developers who sell physical goods and services. That includes integration with Apple Pay, biometric authentication with Face ID and Touch ID, account security, and other technologies that help developers securely connect with Apple users.

The App Store has also remained a safe and trusted marketplace for users, thanks to Apple’s rigorous App Review process and robust privacy and security protections. In 2022, the App Store blocked more than $2 billion in fraudulent transactions — and rejected 1.7 million app submissions for failing to meet privacy, security, and quality standards. Recent innovations, like App Tracking Transparency and Privacy Nutrition Labels, have empowered users with even more information on how their apps use their data.

MacDailyNews Note: The App Store’s official fifteenth birthday is July 10th.

Half of the tablets shipped in the U.S. in the first quarter were Apple iPads. Tablets shipments dropped 7% to 10.8 million units, but performed better than PC shipments (desktops, notebooks, and workstations) in America, largely driven by Apple’s strong iPad performance in U.S. tablet market in the first quarter of 2023.

Apple’s current 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models

PC shipments (desktops, notebooks and workstations) in the United States declined 28% year-on-year to 14.0 million units in the first quarter of 2023. Notebook (including mobile workstations) shipments fell 31% to 11.4 million units, while desktop (including desktop workstations) shipments were down 28% to 2.7 million units.

“A confluence of factors led to the US PC market bottoming out at the start of 2023,” said Ishan Dutt, Principal Analyst at Canalys, in a statement. “The expected seasonal drop after the holidays coincided with the channel finalizing its inventory correction, resulting in muted sell-in of PCs. On the commercial front, businesses continue to grapple with economic pressures, including three further interest rate hikes since the start of the year. Budget-conscious organizations have extended the life cycle of their existing PCs, with many opting only for critical upgrades.”

Despite the short-term struggle, Canalys anticipates a market recovery on the horizon. US PC shipments in Q4 2023 are expected to grow 6% year-on-year while full-year shipments in 2024 are forecasted to be 13% higher than in 2023.
