Screen recording on iPhone is a built-in feature that allows you to capture video of your screen, including audio. This can be useful for creating tutorials, demos, or simply sharing what you’re seeing on your screen with others.

To screen record on iPhone, you’ll need to add the Screen Recording control to your Control Center. To do this, go to Settings > Control Center. Then, tap the + button next to Screen Recording.

Once you’ve added Screen Recording to your Control Center, you can start recording your screen by following these steps:

Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of your screen.

Tap and hold the Screen Recording button (it looks like a circle with a dot in the middle).

Tap Start Recording to begin recording your screen.

To stop recording, open Control Center again and tap the Screen Recording button.

Your screen recording will be saved to your Photos app. You can then trim, edit, and share your recording as you would any other video.

Here are some additional tips for screen recording on iPhone:

To record audio with your screen recording, tap and hold the Screen Recording button in Control Center and then tap Start Recording with Audio.

To pause and resume your screen recording, tap the Screen Recording button in Control Center.

You can also screen record from specific apps. To do this, open the app you want to record and then open Control Center. Tap and hold the Screen Recording button and then tap Start Recording.

Some apps may not allow you to screen record. If you see a red bar at the top of your screen when you try to record, that means the app doesn’t allow screen recording.

Here are some common uses for screen recording on iPhone:

Creating tutorials or demos: Screen recording is a great way to create tutorials or demos of how to use an app or feature. You can then share your recording with others so they can learn how to do the same thing.

Recording gameplay: Screen recording is also a popular way to record gameplay. You can then share your recordings with others or upload them to streaming sites like Twitch or YouTube.

Recording video calls: If you need to record a video call for work or school, you can use screen recording to do so.

Recording bugs or errors: If you encounter a bug or error on your iPhone, you can screen record it and then send the recording to Apple Support for assistance.

Overall, screen recording is a powerful tool that can be used for a variety of purposes. If you haven’t used it before, I encourage you to give it a try. You may be surprised at how useful it is.

Photos is the free photo editing and image library app on every Mac, iPhone and iPad. It’s completely free, easy to use, and has the benefit of syncing across all your devices if you take advantage of Apple’s iCloud Photo Library (for which you will need to pay for iCloud storage, from $0.99/£0.79 a month for 50GB).

Prior to 2015 Photos on the Mac was iPhoto. When Apple replaced iPhoto with Photos in 2015 it also stopped selling another photo app, Aperture, which offered more advanced image editing. Photos has more in common with Photos for iOS and very little in common with Aperture. It’s not a professional image editing app, but it is easy to use and will do for basic to moderate photo management, and quick image tweaking.

The app is a great tool for organizing your photos. It arranges your pictures and videos into the same Years, Collections and Moments as on iOS. You can assign photos to Albums and Shared Albums and Projects. Searching for images can be made easier by identifying People in them so that you can, for example, see every image featuring a particular person in your library. Add a year to the search to see every photo of that person in that year. You can also search for all your photos with cats, plants, or the sea in them, for example.

If it’s image editing features you are interested in you can apply the same Instagram-like filters as are available in the iOS version of the app, but you can also adjust light and color, switch to black & white, eliminate red-eye, adjust white balance, reduce noise and sharpen. There’s a Heal tool, but there’s an absence of pen or brush-based tools in the Edit toolkit. You can’t sharpen or blur individual spots in the picture, for example, or fix the brightness/darkness of regions of the picture. Nor can you add text or shapes, or make selections. For a quick edit you can click on the Auto Enhance icon, which adjusts color and contrast for the image–as a result images tend to look brighter and more colorful. For advice and help read How to edit in Photos for Mac.

Photos is both very easy to use and you can edit and improve images, and easily share them with friends and family directly (via Shared Albums) or to social networks like FaceBook. But if you want more in the way of editing tools you might need to look further–in which case, check out our alternative options below.

Adobe describes Express–formerly known as Spark–as a tool for ‘social graphics and more’, but this online web app also includes a number of useful photo-editing tools that are available for free through any web browser.

When you log in to Express with your web browser, it starts by offering you a variety of templates designed for social media posts, or for creating documents such as posters, menus, or even a resume. But, if you just want to do some quick photo-editing work, then you can easily import photos of your own or use some of the free stock photos that are included with Express.

As you import a photo, Express allows you to quickly resize it or pan around in order to focus on a particular part of the image. You then enter the main Express workspace, which includes a selection of simple filter effects, as well as slider controls that allow you to quickly adjust brightness, contrast and other settings. You can import additional photos and superimpose them in order to create a collage, and you can also add text and graphics, including a number of ready-made logos and artwork for creating posters, fliers and other documents. Express even has simple layer controls, which allow you to edit photos, text and graphics elements individually.

The basic version of Express is free to use, but there is a Premium subscription plan that costs $9.99/£9.98 per month and includes some additional editing tools, as well as a huge library of stock photos, templates, and fonts. Adobe also offers discounts to students, teachers and non-profit organizations, and there’s a 30-day free trial for the Premium option also available.

Adobe already has a simple browser-based photo-editing tool called Express (see above), but it’s also working on a more advanced online editing tool called Photoshop on the web (currently in beta). As the name implies, Photoshop on the web aims to provide some of the more advanced editing tools found in the desktop version of Photoshop, making those tools available within a web browser so that you can start editing your photos on any device with an internet connection (and, presumably, a decent size screen).

At the moment, this online app is still in its beta test phase, and currently only works with the Chrome browser and Microsoft’s Edge, but we were able to use the Mac version of Edge with no problems at all on a MacBook Air running Ventura. Adobe also plans to add support for Firefox soon and, since so many creative users own Macs, we hope they’ll add Safari as well.

Photoshop is a powerful and complex editing tool, but this web version does provide some help for new users. There are some sample images on the app’s home page that you can experiment with (photoshop.adobe.com/import). And when you’re ready to upload your own photos you can also choose a number of Quick Actions – such as lighting effects or removing the background from an image – that are automatically applied to the photo as soon as it’s been uploaded.

After uploading your photo, you proceed to the main editing page, which is very much based on the familiar desktop version of Photoshop. There’s a set of editing tools running down the left-hand side of the window, including Selection tools, Paint Brush, Adjustments for color and lighting, and a Type tool for adding text. There’s more help here as well, as each tool has a quick video tutorial to show you how it works. Over on the right of the editing window there’s a more detailed set of tool palettes for working with layers, masks and effects, and a key feature of this web-based editing tool is a new palette that allows people to collaborate online by adding comments to their projects as well.

Photoshop on the web won’t replace the full desktop version of Photoshop, but it does provide lots of quick and easy editing tools to help you get started with simple photo-editing projects. But remember – it’s still in beta, and we did encounter a few bugs along the way, so make sure to keep a backup of your photos on your Mac’s own hard drive. And while this beta version is free to use at the moment–as long as you register for a free Adobe ID account–it may become part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud subscription plan in the future.

Gimp (which we look at later in this article) may be free, but it’s not the most user-friendly program around. Seashore started life as a ‘fork’ of Gimp – a kind of clone that took Gimp as its starting point – but it has developed a distinct identity of its own over the years.

It doesn’t offer the same level of editing power as Gimp, but Seashore is a lot more straightforward to use. A simple toolbar running across the top of the editing window provides quick access to features such as a crop tool, pen, paintbrush, color dropper, and clone tool. There’s also a Text tool for adding captions and annotations.

As you select each tool, a second context-sensitive toolbar appears below it that offers additional options for that particular tool. So selecting the paintbrush will show options for adjusting the shape and size of the brush, along with features such as different materials and brush textures.

There’s a selection of color effects and filters, and – unusually for open-source software – it even provides a manual that explains how the various effects work to help you get started. More advanced tools include color adjustment, and controls for brightness and contrast, along with precise selection tools that allow you to apply edits just to specific areas of an image.

The app also supports layers for creating composite images, and alpha channels for adjusting transparency. The app’s interface is a little eccentric – such as the sneaky vanishing dialogue boxes that sometimes turn transparent while you’re using them – but Seashore is a great option for getting started with photo editing without spending a penny.

For some reason, Google decided to kill off its popular Picasa photo app a few years ago, and its photographic offerings now focus on the online Google Photos service.

This is essentially Google’s version of Apple’s Photos and iCloud. There’s a simple app available for Macs and iOS devices that allows you to upload your photos to the Google website – and videos too if you want – and then sync them across all your devices (as long as they’re signed into your Google account). You can view all your photos online using a web browser on your Mac, and organize them into albums for easy browsing.

The actual editing tools are pretty basic, limited to a selection of simple filters, and slider controls for adjusting lighting and color, along with tools for cropping, rotation and adjusting aspect ratio. You can also combine a set of photos to create a collage or animated slideshow, but Google Photos’ editing tools are certainly more limited than Photos on the Mac and most of the other photo-editing apps that we review here.

However, Google Photos does have one big strong point that might tempt you away from simply sticking with iCloud. High-res photos and video can take up a lot of storage space, and when you sign up for a Google account its Google Drive service gives you 15GB of free online storage for your files – compared to just 5GB for iCloud Drive (although, as we mentioned above, you can upgrade your iCloud Drive to 50GB for just $0.99p/£0.79 a month, which is actually pretty good value).

If you’re going on vacation and plan to take a stack of photos on your trip, then it might be worth signing up for Google Photos just for the extra storage, and then using Photos or another app to do some serious editing when you get back home.

Gimp is a popular open-source photo editor that has been available for many years and runs on Macs, Windows and even Linux (its full name is GNU Image Manipulation Program, named after the GNU version of Linux). But while it’s free to download, Gimp’s powerful editing tools are light years beyond the simple selfie filters and effects that you find in most free apps. There are no ads and no in-app purchases to tempt cash out of you, either.

The downside of Gimp’s Linux background is that its interface will come as a bit of a shock to most Mac users. Instead of colorful icons and helpful tools, Gimp fills its main editing screen with dull grey icons and long menus and dialogue boxes containing annoyingly small text descriptions.

The app can also feel a little sluggish when applying some of its more complex effects, which suggests that it hasn’t been optimized to take advantage of Mac-specific technologies such as Apple’s Metal graphics system.

But if you’re determined to avoid spending any money at all then you’ll find that Gimp offers a range of powerful tools that are rarely found in a free app such as this.

There are dozens of filters and effects, with a handy split-screen view that gives you ‘before’ and ‘after’ views of your photos. There are even a few animated effects, such as ‘wave’ and ‘ripple’ that you can use to create GIF files for the web. Gimp also has many of the same editing tools as more expensive rivals such as Photoshop Elements, with precise selection tools, layers, clone brush, and a variety of transformation tools, such as crop, scale and shear. And, if you’re feeling really brave, you can delve into some very powerful and precise color and lighting controls too.

Gimp is undoubtedly a powerful and versatile photo editor, and it seems churlish to criticize a free app such as this – but the program’s unfriendly interface could deter quite a few people, so it might be worth parting with some cash if you’d rather work with something a little more user-friendly.

PhotoScape X is a relative newcomer when compared to photo-editing veterans like Photoshop Elements, but this free app has proved popular with many users on both Macs and Windows PCs. It’s also quite unusual, as it completely ignores the traditional interface design of most of its photo-editing rivals.

This includes a wide range of filters, effects and lighting controls, with a handy ‘Compare’ button that shows ‘before’ and ‘after’ versions of your photos. You can also tidy up your photos using options such as red-eye removal, and a ‘healing’ brush to eliminate scratches and other blemishes.

The other tabs at the top of the editing window tend to focus on working with multiple photos, including the Batch tab, which allows you to crop, resize or apply effects to a whole group of photos all at once. We also like the GIF tab, which allows you to quickly combine a series of photos into an animated GIF for use on the web.

One area where PhotoScape X does fall short is with its rather limited selection tools – which means that you generally have to apply edits and effects to an entire photo rather than selected areas within an image. There is a Pro version of the app available as an in-app purchase that provides additional editing tools for £38.99/$39.99, but that seems a little pricey when compared to affordable rivals such as Pixelmator.

You can download it from the
It’s completely free, easy to use, and has the benefit of syncing across all your devices if you take advantage of Apple’s iCloud Photo Library (for which you will need to pay for iCloud storage, from $0.99/£0.79 a month for 50GB).

Instead of toolbars and palettes, PhotoScape X displays its main editing window with a series of tabs running along the top of the window. Each tab focuses on a specific task, starting with the Viewer tab which provides a quick preview of an entire folder of photos at once.

You can then select a specific photo that you want to work on and switch to the Editor tab.

Longtime tech writer David Pogue tried it out in Apple’s hands on area and found it to be “one freaking mind-blowing piece of tech.”

I spent half an hour trying the Apple Vision Pro headset. Here’s the punch line: This is one freaking mind-blowing piece of tech.

I mean, when Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone in 2007, you could feel the paradigm shifting in real time.

This was like that, but better…

[T]he result is so advanced and polished, it makes Meta’s VR headsets look like Blackberries…

[A]t the outset, you won’t be able to order the Vision Pro online. You’ll have to visit an Apple Store to get a custom fitting in person. You’ll get a guided tour while you’re at it…

Photos: It’s just like the Photos app on the iPhone or Mac, except that the photos can be huge. Wall-sized. And when you open a panorama photo — oh my God.

Watching Movies: Oh man. Oh man. This thing does a beautiful simulation of a dazzling, 4K movie screen right in front of you — literally the most pristine visual experience you’ve ever seen, up to “100 feet” diagonal.

Dinosaur Encounter: The demo ended with an insanely compelling interactive video… the wall of the demo room split open to reveal a gigantic screen playing a CGI dinosaur scene. An immense dino — some kind of raptor? — lumbered in, noticed me, and looked directly at me.

As I moved around the room, he continued to stare, tracking me.

And then, curiosity thoroughly piqued, the dinosaur — oh man — stepped out of the screen and into the room.

It was another one-shot, virtual-reality magic trick — but man, what a trick. If your heart rate doesn’t shoot up the first time you see it, you’re in a coma.

MacDailyNews Take: Apple Vision Pro, regardless of price, even in the first generation, is going to sell better than most people, perhaps even those at Apple, think.

Does anyone even remember that the first iPhone didn’t have a front camera, a flash, video recording, or GPS? And there was no app store. You got 16 apps, and you were happy. By those standards, this very first Vision Pro looks like a far more finished machine. It’s as though Apple unveiled the iPhone X back in 2007. — David Pogue

There’s much more in the full article – recommended – here.

If you want to try out iOS 17, watchOS 10, or macOS Sonoma developer betas right now, you no longer have to pay for Apple’s developer program to be able to do so. As shown on an Apple developer website, you now only need an Apple ID to be able to try out developer beta releases (via MacRumors).

To see if you can install the developer betas, make your way to the software update section on your device. On my iPhone 12 Mini, I opened Settings, then tapped General > Software Update > Beta Updates > iOS 17 Developer Beta, and from there, I had the option to download and install the beta. Digging through the settings of my Apple Watch, MacBook Air, and Apple TV, I found options to install the latest developer betas on those devices, too.

That said, just because you can install developer betas doesn’t mean you should. These releases are fresh out of the oven, meaning you might encounter issues like broken apps, major bugs, or unusually fast battery loss — I don’t recommend installing these on a daily driver. For most people itching to try the latest and greatest, I’d recommend waiting until the public betas are released, which Apple says will happen in July.

Apple is making contact and password sharing a lot easier in iOS 17 by letting users insert them into any text field they encounter in the system.

When long pressing in a text box, a new “Insert” option appears in the pop-up menu. Tapping it brings up another menu with two additional new options: “Contacts” and “Passwords.”

Choosing Contacts takes you straight to your contacts list for you to make your selection, while tapping Password takes you to your passwords keychain after authentication.

The feature was tipped to MacRumors by Aaronp613. ‌iOS 17‌ is available now in beta for members of Apple’s Developer Program, and will be publicly released later this year.

Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) returns to help Aniq (Sam Richardson) and Zoë (Zoë Chao) solve whodunnit by questioning family members, star-crossed lovers and business partners, and hearing each suspect’s retelling of the weekend, each with their own unique perspective and visual style.

Based on the award-winning novels by Isaac Asimov, “Foundation” chronicles a band of exiles on their monumental journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire. Hari, Gaal and Salvor discover a colony of Mentalics with psionic abilities that threaten to alter psychohistory itself. The Foundation has entered its religious phase, promulgating the Church of Seldon throughout the Outer Reach and inciting the Second Crisis: war with Empire. The monumental adaptation of “Foundation” chronicles the stories of four crucial individuals transcending space and time as they overcome deadly crises, shifting loyalties and complicated relationships that will ultimately determine the fate of humanity. The epic saga from storyteller David S. Goyer features an international cast led by Emmy-nominated actors Jared Harris and Lee Pace, alongside rising stars Lou Llobell and Leah Harvey.

“The Beanie Bubble”

New Apple Original film premieres globally July 28, 2023

Why did the world suddenly treat stuffed animals like gold? Ty Warner was a frustrated toy salesman until his collaboration with three women grew his masterstroke of an idea into the biggest toy craze in history. “The Beanie Bubble” is an inventive story about what and who we value, and the unsung heroes whose names didn’t appear on the heart-shaped tag. The film hails from Imagine Entertainment and is co-directed by Emmy Award nominee Kristin Gore and Grammy Award winner Damian Kulash with Zach Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook and Geraldine Viswanathan leading the star-studded cast.

“Physical” season three

Third and final season premieres globally August 2, 2023

Apple’s hit half-hour dramedy starring and executive produced by Rose Byrne and hailing from creator, writer and executive producer Annie Weisman, is set to return for its 10-episode third and final season this summer. Set in the idyllic but fragile beach paradise of sunny 1980s San Diego, “Physical” is a half-hour dark comedy following Sheila Rubin (Byrne), a quietly tortured, seemingly dutiful housewife supporting her smart but controversial husband’s bid for state assembly. But behind closed doors, Sheila has her own darkly funny take on life she rarely lets the world see. She’s also battling a complex set of personal demons relating to her self-image … that is, until she finds release through the unlikeliest source: the world of aerobics. Season two found Byrne having successfully launched her first fitness video only to encounter some new and bigger obstacles on her path. She is torn between loyalty to her husband (Rory Scovel) and the values he represents, and a dangerous attraction to someone else. And since she’s no longer the only game in town, she finds herself having to outrun some fierce new competitors on the road to building a full-fledged fitness empire. “Physical” is produced by Tomorrow Studios (an ITV Studios partnership) and created, written and executive produced by Weisman, who also serves as showrunner. This series is directed by Stephanie Laing, who also serves as executive producer alongside Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements and Alissa Bachner for Tomorrow Studios, and Byrne.

When Elizabeth finds herself fired from her lab, she accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show, and sets out to teach a nation of overlooked housewives — and the men who are suddenly listening — a lot more than recipes. Hailing from Apple Studios and based on the bestselling novel from Bonnie Garmus, “Lessons in Chemistry” also stars Lewis Pullman, Aja Naomi King, Stephanie Koenig, Kevin Sussman, Patrick Walker and Thomas Mann. “Lessons in Chemistry” is produced by Aggregate Films. Six-time Emmy Award nominee Lee Eisenberg serves as showrunner. The series is executive produced by Academy Award nominee Susannah Grant alongside Larson. Louise Shore also serves as executive producer.

“The Morning Show” season three

The upcoming third season expands its star-studded cast with new additions including Jon Hamm and Nicole Beharie, as well as returning star Julianna Margulies, and recurring stars Tig Notaro, Stephen Fry and Natalie Morales.

Picking up after the explosive events of season one, season two found “The Morning Show” team emerging from the wreckage of Alex (Aniston) and Bradley’s (Witherspoon) actions, to a new UBA and a world in flux, where identity is everything and the chasm between who we present as and who we really are comes into play. Along with Aniston and Witherspoon, the star-studded cast for season two was led by Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Bel Powley, Desean Terry, Janina Gavankar, Tom Irwin and Marcia Gay Harden. New additions for season two included Greta Lee, Ruairi O’Connor, Hasan Minhaj, Holland Taylor, Tara Karsian, Valeria Golino and Julianna Margulies.

Written and directed by John Carney, “Flora and Son” follows Flora (Eve Hewson), a single mother who argues with her son Max (Orén Kinlan) in an attempt to find him a hobby, retrieves a guitar from a dumpster and discovers that one person’s rubble can be a family’s salvation. The film is produced by Carney, Anthony Bergman, Peter Cron, Rebecca O’Flanagan and Robert Walpole.

“Loot” season two

The second season of the Apple Original series premieres 2023

In “Loot,” billionaire Molly Novak (Maya Rudolph) has a dream life, complete with private jets, a sprawling mansion and a gigayacht — anything her heart desires. But when her husband of 20 years betrays her, she spirals publicly, becoming fuel for tabloid fodder. She’s reaching rock bottom when she learns, to her surprise, that she has a charity foundation run by the no-nonsense Sofia Salinas (MJ Rodriguez), who pleads with Molly to stop generating bad press. With her devoted assistant Nicholas (Kim Booster) by her side, and with the help of Sofia and team — including mild-mannered accountant Arthur (Nat Faxon) and her optimistic, pop-culture-loving cousin Howard (Ron Funches) — Molly embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Giving back to others might be what she needs to get back to herself.

“Palm Royale”

New Apple Original series premieres 2023

“Palm Royale” is a new 10-episode Apple Original comedy from creator Abe Sylvia and director Tate Taylor, starring and executive produced by Kristen Wiig and executive produced by Academy Award winner Laura Dern, who also plays a key role. A story about gorgeously impossible people, “Palm Royale” follows Maxine Simmons’ (Wiig) attempt to secure her seat at America’s most exclusive table: Palm Beach high society. As she strives to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, “Palm Royale” asks the same questions that still baffle us today: “Who gets a seat at the table?,” “How do you get there?” and “What will you sacrifice along the way?” Set during the powder keg era of the early 1970s, “Palm Royale” is a testament to every outsider fighting for their chance at superficial greatness. Hailing from Apple Studios, “Palm Royale” is written, executive produced and showrun by Sylvia, and directed and executive produced by Taylor. In addition to Wiig and Dern, Taylor and John Norris serve as executive producers under their Wyolah Entertainment banner. The ensemble cast also features Allison Janney, Carol Burnett, Leslie Bibb, Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Mindy Cohn, Kaia Gerber, Julia Duffy, Jason Canela, Jordan Bridges and Claudia Ferri.

If you’ve ever wanted to take an early look at new versions of Apple’s operating systems before they launch, and maybe help shape them in the process, then Apple’s beta program is something you should consider. This initiative allows developers and public beta testers to gain access to the updates before they’re released, so they can help test for bugs and give any new features a thorough workout before they’re unleashed on the general public.

Apple will soon be revealing the details of the next round of operating system updates at its worldwide developers conference (WWDC) – which kicks off with a Keynote on June 5. Soon after the keynote closes the first developer betas of iOS 17 and macOS 14 will arrive and it’s likely that lots of Apple fans will be interested in how they can get their hands on the beta versions of the new software.

If you are keen to get involved in testing the new software – and any other Apple operating system – read on to find out how to apply.

In this article we explain how to get involved with testing the betas, but also point out some of the reasons why you may wish to give it a pass and wait for the final versions of iOS 17, macOS 14 and other OSs to arrive.

What is the Apple beta programme?

As the name suggests, this is a chance for volunteers to download a beta version of the new operating system for their device and test it out. It’s completely free and you can sign up for the following software:

iOS

iPadOS

macOS

tvOS

watchOS

HomePod software

The idea is that you install the pre-release software and use it as you would your normal OS and send Apple comments through the built-in Feedback Assistant regarding crashes or other behavioural anomalies that you encounter when testing your apps, or when using the software as you would normally.

It comes in two flavours – Public and Developer – with the latter including some extra options that we outline below.

When will the iOS beta come out?

The first developer beta of iOS 16 usually arrives just after the WWDC keynote in June. So expect it to arrive on June 5.

The first public beta of iOS is likely to arrive in late June or early July.

When will the macOS beta come out?

The first developer beta of a new version of macOS is also usually issued following the WWDC keynote. So expect the developer versions macOS 14 on June 5.

There is a longer wait for the first public betas to arrive. The the first public beta of macOS may come a few weeks later than the iOS public beta, around the middle of July.

Who can join the Apple beta programme?

For the four operating systems mentioned at the top of the article (watchOS is slightly different), Apple offers two types of beta. The developer beta is available to any paid member of Apple’s Developer Program. You can enrol as a developer here. It costs $99 a year.

There also a free public beta testing programme that’s free and open to anyone with a valid Apple ID (iCloud accounts qualify) who goes to the
Apple Beta Software Program page and signs up.

You’ll obviously need to agree to the terms and conditions. Be sure to read them first, as participating in the programme can open your device up to code that has the potential to cause trouble with its functionality.

Depending on whether you are joining the Developer Beta Program or the Public Beta you may also have to abide by an NDA. Be aware that releasing details of what you’re seeing in the beta may be breaking the rules.

Apple

Is it safe to install the Apple beta?

There are a few reasons why becoming a beta tester for the next version of iOS or macOS might seem attractive. For a start you might gain bragging rights for being one of the first to use the new software. However, Apple regards the programme as confidential, so you won’t actually be able to blog or post on social media about the features or problems until Apple itself makes them public knowledge.

Becoming a beta tester also gives you a chance to shape the development of the software – your feedback could be invaluable in stopping a bug or just generally improving the quality of the software on your Mac or iPhone. You will be providing a service to others in ensuring that all bugs are ironed out before the final release.

However, beta software, by its very nature, is unstable and it’s worth noting that participating in Apple’s macOS Beta Seed Program is not a light undertaking. You should consider whether it’s really right for you before downloading and installing the pre-release software, which is bound to have bugs and issues that could cause things to go spectacularly wrong with your Mac.

This won’t be helped by the fact that Apple is not obligated to provide any support for pre-release software.

If you only have one Mac, and you’re intending to run the pre-release software on that machine, you might want to reconsider. Apple suggests that you should run the pre-release software on a dedicated Mac, not a Mac that you use for business or production purposes.

This means that we would heavily advise against putting it on a device upon which you’re reliant. Bugs in the code could see the device stop working at any moment or in worst case scenarios it could actually brick your machine, leaving it a very expensive paperweight.

If you don’t have a spare Mac to hand at least consider
installing the macOS beta on a separate volume. Or you could
run the beta on an external drive.

Similarly if you don’t want to be stuck without a working iPhone don’t install the beta of iOS on yours. If you have an old iPhone handy that might be a better option for running the new iOS (if it’s supported).

Luckily participating in the beta programme doesn’t invalidate your warranty, so if something does go wrong, a trip to the Apple Store would hopefully see it rectified.

The threat of bugs and other stability issues is a good reason to think carefully about whether you want to take the risk of using the beta. If you do decide to install the beta software, make sure that you create a full backup beforehand. Read
Best backup software for Mac and
How to back up an iPhone or iPad for some ideas on how to do this safely.

Also, remember that installing software can take a good few minutes – if you don’t have time to wait for 20 minutes every few weeks while your Mac installs the latest version (especially if that’s only going to break everything for you) you might find the frustration outweighs the novelty value of having the latest updates.

There’s also the important matter of privacy. By agreeing to test the macOS beta software, you’re essentially giving Apple permission to collect diagnostic, technical and usage data from you, unless you go through the process of opting out.

For example, the first beta version of Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite came with several issues, including problems in Safari while trying to access Netflix content, iPhoto, Photo Stream and iCloud Photo Sharing problems, iCloud Drive issues and AirDrop issues, so beware. In another example, early beta versions of macOS High Sierra attempted to use AFPS (Apple’s new file system) on Fusion Drives. This feature was later removed, but those people who had already installed the beta had to perform a complicated uninstall process and revert their Fusion Drives back to the previous file system.

If you install the beta and then think you made a mistake, here’s how to revert to an older version of macOS. We also have a guide to How to remove an iOS beta from your iPhone and How to remove macOS beta from a Mac.

Is Apple’s beta program free?

It’s free to join the Public Beta.

Developers get the developer version beta for free – but they need to have signed up to Apple Developer Program (here), which costs $99 a year.

Do you get paid for being an Apple beta tester?

No. This is strictly a voluntary pursuit.

What’s the difference between Public & Developer Beta?

The Developer Beta is usually a few steps ahead of the Public Beta, which essentially means that the Public Beta will be slightly more stable.

The Developer Beta normally comes out after the WWDC keynote presentation. There is usually a slightly longer wait until the Public Beta arrives.

However, once the programmes are under way there is usually only a few days between the developer beta being released and the public version arriving.

While the Public version is aimed at the user experience, those who develop apps for Apple products can use the Apple Developer Program to gain early access to the beta software and be able to implement the necessary changes into their code so that apps are ready to go when the full version of the OS is released.

There’s also the TestFlight platform which enables developers to invite up to 10,000 users to give their in-development apps a trial run. Plus, Apple provides a range of software tools such as Xcode, CloudKit Dashboard and many others.

What does being an Apple beta tester involve?

The purpose of the beta program is to provide Apple with feedback about the upcoming OS. If you experience bugs or other issues, report them to Apple using the Feedback Assistant app. And don’t just say something crashed, explain exactly what you were doing when the crash happened and try and reproduce the crash to see if you can identify what steps lead to it.

Don’t just tell Apple that you don’t like the ‘flat’ look of the user interface. Your purpose as a beta tester is to provide feedback on bugs, not try and assume Apple’s software designer’s role.

That said, it won’t always be bugs you need to provide feedback on. Perhaps you can’t work out how to do something and a user interface tweak is required.

You can also provide feedback if third-party apps aren’t working as they should – there is actually a 3rd-party Application Compatibility category in which to submit feedback.

Expect there to be bugs and issues in the beta – the versions of macOS available through the Beta Software Program are not finished products, by installing it you are agreeing to become a tester and helping Apple to iron out these issues.

How to sign up to the macOS Beta Seed Program – developer

Registered Apple Developers are able to download pre-release versions of most of Apple’s software too, but it costs $99 (approx £80) per year to register as a developer.

To register as a developer head over to the Apple Developer Program registration page and click Enroll. Registering as an Apple developer will give you access to support materials, and enable you to register Macs and iOS devices with Apple so you can use them to run your software.

You can sign in with your own Apple ID (recommended if you’re a single developer), or you can create an Apple ID just for the developer account (recommended if you are developing for a company).

You don’t have to pay Apple to register as a developer. You can sign up and gain access to all the developer tools without paying a penny. The basic registration is fine for developing and testing an app, although you will need to sign up with Apple for membership if you want to download the developer previews.

How to sign up to the macOS Beta Seed Program – public

If you are a member of the public you can also run the beta – but each version of the beta comes a little later than the developer version. Apple tries to make sure the worst of the issues are ironed out before it goes on wider release. That’s why there are often a number of weeks between the first developer beta and the first public beta being released. You can also expect a delay between each version of the developer beta and the matching public beta arriving.

To sign up you’ll need to go to the macOS Beta Seed Program website. From there, you can find out more about the program by clicking Learn More or FAQ.

You must be aged 18 or older with a valid Apple ID, and you’ll also need to be willing to accept the Confidentiality Agreement, which means you agree not to share information or screenshots of the update.

By clicking ‘Get Started’ on the macOS Beta Seed Program website, you’ll be taken to the ‘Sign In’ page. If you don’t already have an Apple ID, you can create one by clicking ‘create one now’ in the grey box on the left. If you do have one, however, you can go ahead and sign in using the password you normally use for your iTunes and other Apple services.

Next, you’ll be taken to the macOS Beta Seed and Confidentiality Agreement. You’ll need to read the agreement (you can view it as a PDF if you prefer by clicking the link beneath the scroll link) and then click accept. Unless of course you don’t agree with the terms in which case you’ll want to stop the registration process now.

Once you are registered for the Apple Beta Software Program you will need to enrol your Mac here in order to be able to get the updates from the Mac App Store. You will have to re-enrol your Mac if you had previously been a tester.

You will find a download link and your redemption code on that page. Click on the link and enter your code to download the latest beta. We cover How to get the macOS Beta and How to get the iOS beta and How to get tvOS beta separately.

If, at any point, you decide that you’d like to end your participation in the beta software program, simply visit the Unenroll page on Apple’s website and follow the instructions.
