In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, Apple has established itself as a powerhouse, not just for its individual devices, but

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, Apple has established itself as a powerhouse, not just for its individual devices, but for the seamless and integrated ecosystem it has meticulously built over the years. The marriage of hardware and software across Apple’s diverse product lineup has given birth to an interconnected world where iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and Apple TVs work together harmoniously. This article explores the thriving ecosystem of devices and services that has become synonymous with the Apple brand.

The Foundation: Seamless Integration

One of the key pillars of Apple’s ecosystem is the seamless integration between its devices. The synergy between iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other Apple products is a testament to the company’s commitment to providing a cohesive user experience. The Apple ecosystem is designed to make the transition from one device to another fluid and natural, allowing users to start a task on one device and seamlessly continue on another.

iCloud, Apple’s cloud service, plays a pivotal role in this integration. It serves as a bridge that synchronizes data, applications, and settings across devices. Whether it’s photos, documents, or app data, iCloud ensures that users can access their information from any Apple device, making the entire ecosystem feel like an extension of the user rather than a collection of individual gadgets.

The Symbiotic Relationship: Hardware and Software

Apple’s meticulous control over both hardware and software has been a defining characteristic of its ecosystem. Unlike some competitors who rely on third-party manufacturers and software developers, Apple designs its hardware and software in-house, allowing for a tightly integrated and optimized experience.

The iOS and macOS operating systems are tailored to work seamlessly with the hardware specifications of iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This level of control enables Apple to push the boundaries of performance and efficiency, ensuring that users experience the full potential of their devices.

The App Store: A Hub of Possibilities

The App Store is a cornerstone of Apple’s ecosystem, providing a vast marketplace for applications that enhance the functionality of its devices. From productivity tools to entertainment apps, the App Store is a hub of possibilities, empowering users to customize their devices according to their needs and preferences.

Furthermore, the App Store fosters innovation by providing a platform for developers to create and distribute their applications. The strict app review process ensures a level of quality and security, contributing to a trustworthy and reliable ecosystem.

Apple Services: A Diverse Portfolio

Beyond devices and applications, Apple has expanded its ecosystem with a diverse portfolio of services. Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and Apple News+ are just a few examples of the services that seamlessly integrate with Apple devices. These services not only cater to entertainment needs but also contribute to the overall stickiness of the Apple ecosystem.

The introduction of Apple One, a subscription bundle that combines multiple Apple services, further enhances the value proposition for users. This bundling strategy encourages users to explore and adopt a broader range of Apple services, deepening their engagement with the ecosystem.

Security and Privacy: Building Trust

Apple’s commitment to user privacy and security plays a significant role in fostering trust within its ecosystem. With features like Face ID, Touch ID, and end-to-end encryption, Apple prioritizes protecting user data and maintaining the integrity of its devices and services.

The Future of Apple’s Ecosystem

As technology continues to advance, Apple shows no signs of slowing down in its quest to refine and expand its ecosystem. The integration of new technologies, such as augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI), is likely to shape the future of Apple’s devices and services, providing users with innovative and immersive experiences.

Conclusion

Apple’s ecosystem stands as a testament to the company’s unwavering commitment to providing a holistic and seamless user experience. From the tight integration of hardware and software to the diverse array of services, Apple has created an ecosystem that not only meets the needs of today’s users but also anticipates their desires for the future. As the technological landscape continues to evolve, Apple’s ecosystem remains a benchmark for innovation, user-centric design, and the harmonious interplay of devices and services.

One of the joys of Touch ID on a Mac laptop is using Apple Pay without needing an iPhone or iPad at hand to validate a secure credit or debit card transaction. This was extended to M-series Macs with the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, which allows a Mac mini, iMac, or Mac Studio to add Touch ID through a special wireless connection to an M-series Mac’s Secure Enclave module.

But some readers have found Apple Pay disabled. In  > System Preferences/Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, macOS offers the explanation “Apple Pay has been disabled because the security settings of this Mac were modified.” Several different causes could be the root, and Apple omits one for M-series Macs in the document linked via a Learn More button in the pane–the company says it doesn’t apply, though I found in testing that it does.

Full Security on an Intel or M-Series Mac

To ensure Apple Pay works, system security must be set to Full Security on both Intel and M-series Macs. This requires restarting or starting up in recoveryOS and then using the Startup Security Utility to reset system security.

This message doesn’t provide a link to every reason it might appear.

You may have downgraded security on an Intel Mac to boot off an external volume or to install some low-level drivers for third-party software. With an M-series Mac, the most likely reason is you enabled its Reduced Security mode to install a kernel extension required by some software that taps into low-level drivers, such as MacFuse or SAT SMART for drive monitoring.

With a reduced-security macOS startup, Apple may be unable to create the level of integrity it and the credit-card system requires for mobile payments that match the degree offered by a point-of-sale system accepting a chip on a card. If so, Apple Pay is disabled on the Mac. (Apple explains in technical detail how this relates to the M-series boot security policy process in this platform security document.)

There are separate paths on how to re-enable Full Security by Mac architecture type. Apple offers a full page walkthrough on reverting to Full Security with an Intel Mac with a T2 Security Chip. For an M-series Mac, look at the “Change the security policy” heading in this support document.

Other causes

Apple also suggests other causes:

If you have a laptop, its lid must be open. This makes sense because how would you otherwise use the Touch ID sensor? There’s an exception: you can still use the sensor on a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID with an M-series Mac with the lid closed. (Apple doesn’t list this exception; I tested it, and it works.)

A necessary security update may not have been installed. In the Software Update preference pane, click Advanced: the “Install system data files and security updates” box should be checked for automatic installation.

Apple also notes more ambiguously that macOS disables Apple Pay “when it detects third-party software or malware that affects its ability to keep your payment information secure.”

You might wonder why Safari continues to allow you to fill in stored credit and debits cards from Safari > Preferences > Autofill if Apple Pay is disabled? Safari doesn’t perform a mobile payment transaction when it auto-fills card information—it just drops the information in without additional typing. If you’ve stored the Card Verification Code (CVC, also known as CVV and by the names), Safari will fill that in, too.

Credit-card processors that manage transactions for online retailers treat form-entered cards as among the most potentially fraudulent transactions; they don’t differentiate—nor do they have a way to—between browser auto-filled card details or those entered manually. Apple Pay mobile payments are among the least likely to be fraudulent because of the way the transaction is created and validated and are scored for risk accordingly.

Apple in the iOS 17 beta has changed the text that provides details on the Automated Clearing House (ACH) transfer time for Apple Savings account holders.

In ‌iOS 17‌ beta 2, it now reads “Funds are typically available for withdrawal by the 5th business day” when a transfer is made. Prior to the beta, it said that transfers “typically take 1-3 business days to complete.” The 1-3 day wording still exists in iOS 16.

The transfer time clarification comes after a number of complaints from Apple Card owners who opted into the Savings account when it became available. Apple Savings account users have had issues with long wait times when attempting to withdraw funds.

A June report from The Wall Street Journal shared stories from several customers who faced unexplained delays when making a withdrawal from an Apple Savings account. One customer even experienced a shocking 17-day delay before receiving their funds, with Goldman Sachs citing anti-fraud efforts.

The Apple Savings account initially launched in April as an extension of the ‌Apple Card‌, in partnership with Goldman Sachs. The account promised a high-yield 4.15% savings option to customers, attracting many who wanted to capitalize on earning interest while staying in the Apple ecosystem. The account is managed through the Apple Wallet app, offering seamless integration with other Apple services.

It’s unclear whether the extended transfer time is a permanent change or a temporary measure while Apple and Goldman Sachs work on resolving the issues behind the scenes.

It’s the Friday before the Fourth of July weekend, which means a couple of things: fly-by-night fireworks sellers are probably popping up in mall parking lots around you, and there are deals to be had (ones that don’t risk you any bodily harm).

As for today’s deals, one of the best is the $700 discount Best Buy is currently offering on the 48-inch LG A2 OLED TV. That knocks the price of the entry-level OLED down to $599.99 — an all-time low we’ve seen once or twice before. While the A2 may be considered entry-level compared to LG’s other OLED models, it’s still an excellent panel. The A2 has the rich color contrast expected of OLEDs, and though it may not stack up to the brightness and features of newer, higher-end models like the C2 or C3, it’s a great TV for a much more affordable price. It tops out at 6,0Hz and none of its three HDMI ports is 2.1 spec, so it isn’t up to snuff when it comes to gaming on Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5, but it’s a mighty fine value and a quality display for movies and TV shows.

GameStop is offering a buy two, get one free promo on pre-owned games through July Fourth. I know, I know, GameStop used game deals are usually more miss than hit, but this one actually seems good if you want to save on some recent triple-A titles.

For example, you can get pre-owned physical copies of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (pre-owned for $64.99) and Diablo IV (pre-owned for $64.9) and get Star Wars Jedi: Survivor for free. A combo like those three used games will cost you $129.98 instead of $194.97. That’s one way to min-max the savings on some recent titles, but other qualifying games that save a little less include Street Fighter 6 (pre-owned for $54.99), Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Intergrade (pre-owned for $59.99), and Resident Evil 4 (pre-owned for $54.99).

Meta now says it plans to become such an alternative, but will do it via an extension to its existing Facebook ads service.According to The Verge, Meta will test this type of ad later this year, starting with a small group of Android app developers. The plan is for ads to allow Facebook users to download apps directly within the social media platform, rather than simply linking out to the Google Play Store.

The integration is already available as a beta to Plus users in the ChatGPT web app, which “knows when and how to browse the internet to answer questions about recent topics and events.” The free version of ChatGPT, on the other hand, is only capable of surfacing information up to the year 2021.

To enable web browsing with Bing on the ChatGPT app for iOS, OpenAI says you’ll need to navigate to your settings and then enable the Browsing option in the “New Features” section. From there, select GPT-4 from the model switcher and then hit “Browse with Bing” from the dropdown. ChatGPT currently only has an app on iOS, with one on Android coming “soon.”

If you’ve got an active Google account — or especially if you’ve got one you haven’t used in a while — you’ve probably got more apps and services hooked up to your account than you realize. There are all those places where you’ve “signed in with Google,” all those browser extensions you’ve given permissions to, all those add-ons that you’ve installed on top of Gmail and Google Drive, and so on.

While it’s always a good idea to be selective and cautious in choosing which apps and sites get these privileges, there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with using your Google account instead of an email address and password combination or in giving another app that may be useful access to your emails or Google storage (depending on the app, of course).

However, when you stop using these third-party apps and services but keep the connections to your Google account in place, you are potentially leaving your data and your account exposed. It’s good security practice to keep the number of apps that can access your Google account down to a minimum — only the ones you fully trust and regularly use. The fewer connections, the safer you are.

Here’s how to find out what apps and services are attached to your Google account and how to remove them.

Using your Google account page

You can manage third-party apps and services from your Google account.

Google’s account management tools are fairly robust. You can access them on the web by going to your Google account page and logging in.

Click Security from the menu on the left.

Scroll down the main section to Your connections to third-party apps and services.

Select See all connections.

You’ll now see a list of everything connected to your Google account — including, probably, a few apps you’d forgotten about.

Checking connected apps and services

Click on any of the entries in the list to see more information about it, including what the app is allowed to do and which Google apps it has access to (Gmail for reading and sending emails, for example). If this is an app that you no longer want to have access to your Google account:

Select Delete all connections to break the link between the app or service and your Google account, then click Confirm.

If you need more info first, click on the See details button to find out when the connection to your Google account was first established. From there, you can stop access by clicking the blue button (which will say either Delete connection or Stop using Sign in with Google).

Note that this doesn’t prevent you from using the app and service again in the future: if you load it up again, however, you’ll have to reestablish the connection to your Google account using your password or passkey.

Checking specific apps

On the Third-party apps & services page, just beneath the title that says [number] total apps and services, there are several buttons that will filter which apps you want to check out, including one labeled Access to.

A menu lists specific Google apps that are being access by other apps or devices.

Click on Access to get a drop-down menu that lists specific Google apps that are being accessed by apps or devices (such as a speaker that uses Google Assistant).

Click on any of the entries in the list to see more information about it, including what the app is allowed to do.

Select Delete all connections to break the link between the app or service and your Google account, then click Confirm.

Using your mobile device

You can get to the same screens and options on Android and iOS, too.

On Android:

Open Settings and tap Google.

Select Manage your Google Account.

Switch to the Security tab.

Scroll down to Your connections to third-party apps & services.

On iOS

Open the Google app and tap your profile picture (top right).

Choose Manage your Google Account.

Open the Security tab.

Scroll down to Your connections to third-party apps & services.

You can also get to your Google account through the mobile browser on your smartphone: just head to your Google account page and sign in.

From your Google Drive

You can disconnect apps from Google Drive and delete their data at the same time.

There’s actually a completely separate list of connected apps and services in your Google Drive account. These are typically plug-ins you’re running on top of Google Drive (perhaps to handle unusual file types) or games and apps that need the cloud storage space.

Head to Google Drive on the web, log into your account, and then:

– Click the cog icon (top right corner).

– Choose Settings from the menu, then Manage apps on the left.

Again, you’ll see a list of connected apps, together with what the app is designed to do and, in some cases, how much storage space its data is using.

Click Options next to any third-party app to see how you can manage it. (Most Google-created apps will have Options grayed out, although you can unclick the Use by default if you have a different preferred app.)

Choose Disconnect from Drive to break the connection with your Google Drive account (this typically appears for apps that are still active, and you get the option to delete its data at the same time).

If an app is grayed out, it’s likely no longer available — you will probably see the message This app no longer has access to Drive beneath it, along with the amount of hidden app data that still remains behind. Click Options and choose Delete hidden app data to remove any associated files.

This is only something you can do on the web — the same screen isn’t available through the Android and iOS apps for Google Drive.

Web browser extensions

Your browser will tell you which sites an extension has access to.

Browser extensions work a little differently in that they won’t all have direct access to your Google account, but they may have permission to interact with web apps (such as Gmail and Google Docs) when they’re open in your browser.

For example, a Gmail extension that lets you snooze emails for a certain period doesn’t need permission to log into your Google account but will have permission to interact with your Gmail data when the app is open in a browser tab.

As with full apps and services, keep your list of extensions trimmed down as much as possible to minimize the security risks — ideally, you should only really keep the ones you’re actively using.

Head to the extensions page in your browser of choice to see active extensions and remove them if necessary:

In Chrome and Edge, click the three dots (top right), then Extensions > Manage Extensions.

In Firefox, click the three lines (top right), then Add-ons and themes > Extensions.

In Safari, select Safari > Settings > Extensions to see a list.
