Apple is experimenting with larger iMacs, including a 32-inch version, for the future of its famous desktop line, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who wrote in the subscriber-only version of his Power On newsletter today that development is still early, so much could change. He doesn’t believe we’ll see one before the end of 2024.

Gurman also tweaked his predicted timeline for the M3-powered iMac he said in March would be coming as soon as the second half of this year at the earliest. This time, he said he expects them by early next year.

It makes sense that Apple would be working on a bigger iMac. People like bigger screens! And while the 24-inch model Apple sells now is a solid compromise between the former 21.5-inch and the 27-inch Intel iMac that was canceled last year, having a full 5K display is nicer if you’re the type to have tons of apps open at once.

Bigger is also better for creative types. Being able to really see tiny details in art you’re creating on or images you’re editing is crucial. Same goes for music and video production if you’re making precise edits on a timeline, at least for my aging eyeballs. Apple just hasn’t had a great iMac for professional creative work since the 27-inch iMac Pro (or a very upgraded standard iMac), and that’s a shame.

Former Apple design chief Sir Jony Ive has revealed his latest project, a collaboration with British audio brand Linn to design a 50th anniversary edition of its Sondek LP12 turntable.

The luxury $60,000 record player is the first non-Apple hardware project Ive is known to have been involved in since he and four other colleagues left the company in 2019 to found the design firm LoveFrom.

The premium piece of audio technology features many of the classic hallmarks of an Ive-approved product, right down to the smoothed off aluminum edges, circular elements, and neutral, minimalist aesthetic.

Speaking to Fast Company, Ive said he had owned multiple Linn products over the years, explaining that “music has always been profoundly important to me.” He continued:

“So you can imagine, I think the first consequential music player that I designed was the first iPod, and that began a journey of multiple generations of iPod, and multiple AirPods and music accessories. I feel really fortunate to have gone the full circle… so many years on from my first visit to the factory.”

Ive describes the LP12-50 as “a very gentle and modest project for us that was really motivated by our love and respect for Linn.” Indeed, according to Fast Company, LoveFrom completed the work pro bono, and has no contract or other financial arrangement with the company.

“There’s a substantial percentage of our work which we do purely for the love of doing it,” Ive told the website, which noted that the design firm relies on its longer-term contracts with the likes of Airbnb and Ferrari to make money.

Since leaving Apple to found LoveFrom, Ive and fellow designer Marc Newson have designed a typeface, an emblem for the coronation of King Charles III, and a red clown nose for British charity Comic Relief.

Apple said in 2019 that Ive would continue to be involved in design at Apple and that it would be one of LoveFrom’s primary clients. For example, Ive was reportedly involved in the creation of the 2021 iMac. It’s unknown whether LoveFrom has worked with Apple since, and the design firm tends to keep a low profile.

LoveFrom, the design firm formed by Apple’s former design head Jony Ive, has collaborated with British audio brand Linn on a 50th anniversary edition of its Sondek LP12 turntable. Just 250 models of the Linn Sondek LP12-50 will be produced and delivered between August 2023 and March 2024, with the limited edition turntable available to reserve now for an eye-watering $60,000 (£50,000).

According to a blog post from Linn CEO Gilad Tiefenbrun, the collaboration dates back to early 2022 when Tiefenbrun was offered a meeting with Ive out of the blue over LinkedIn. Eventually, the two companies decided to collaborate on the upcoming turntable, which Fast Company calls Ive’s “first hardware project post-Apple.”

Linn has focused on the sonic elements of the Sondek LP12-50 like a so-called “Bedrok” plinth made from a dense wood designed to minimize vibrations. Meanwhile, LoveFrom focused more on its industrial design. “We saw a number of areas where there could be small improvements and gentle evolutions of the current design,” Ive tells Fast Company. Previously squared-off components have been given smoother edges, a plastic rocker power button has been swapped out for an aluminum circle, and new hinges were developed for the machine’s dust cover that can hold it open at any angle.

Interestingly, Fast Company reports LoveFrom’s work on Linn’s Sondek LP12-50 was pro bono, and there’s “no contract or other financial arrangement” between the two firms. “There’s a substantial percentage of our work which we do purely for the love of doing it,” Ive said, noting that the design firm makes money from its longer-term contracts with the likes of Airbnb and Ferrari.

The Sondek LP12-50 is a world apart from the kinds of compact digital music devices like AirPods and iPods that Ive’s name was associated with while at Apple. But it’s arguably the most Ive-style collaboration LoveFrom has taken on since the designer left Apple to form the firm with Marc Newson in 2019. Other projects have included a typeface, an emblem for King Charles’ coronation, and a clown nose for British charity Comic Relief.

Twitter appears to be unhappy with the runaway success of Threads, Meta’s Twitter alternative that launched last night. Threads has amassed more than 30 million users in under 24 hours, making it the biggest threat to Twitter to date.

According to Semafor, Twitter lawyer Alex Spiro yesterday sent Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg a letter [PDF] accusing Meta of “systemic, willful, and lawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property.”

Twitter claims that Meta hired “dozens” of former Twitter employees that “had and continue to have access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other highly confidential information.” The company further says that the employees “improperly retained Twitter documents and electronic devices,” and that Meta took advantage of this to have those workers develop the “copycat” Threads app on an accelerated timeline.

When Elon Musk took over as CEO of Twitter, he fired thousands of employees who then had to look for work. It is likely that some of those employees transitioned to Meta, but hiring people actively looking for a job is typically considered poaching.

Competition is fine, cheating is not

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 6, 2023

Twitter’s letter says that it plans to “enforce its intellectual property rights,” with the company demanding that Meta “take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets.” Twitter threatens that it reserves the right to seek “civil remedies and injunctive relief” to prevent Meta from using its intellectual property.

Along with claims that Meta poached Twitter employees to develop Threads, Twitter says that Meta is “expressly prohibited” from scraping Twitter’s followers or following data. Twitter is asking Meta to “preserve any documents” that could be relevant to a future dispute, suggesting that Twitter might be planning to file a lawsuit in the future.

Twitter has not gone after other Twitter-like social networks that include Bluesky and Mastodon, but Threads is a newly-launched app that is built off of Instagram, giving it a notable user base from its debut. Mastodon and Bluesky have far fewer users. In February, for example, Mastodon had 1.4 million active users, while Bluesky had 50,000 users at the end of April.

Following Twitter’s accusations, Meta’s communications director Andy Stone said that no one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee. “That’s just not a thing,” he wrote.

Apple Studios has revealed a first-look image from Brad Pitt’s hotly anticipated Formula One feature. The drama is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment and seven-time F1 champion Sir Lewis Hamilton’s Dawn Apollo Films banner.

Abid Rahman for The Hollywood Reporter:

The untitled film, which also features Snowfall star Damson Idris in a lead role, is set in the world of elite motor racing. Pitt stars as a former F1 driver who returns to race for the fictional APXGP team, a middling outfit, alongside Idris’ character.

In June 2022, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the deal for Apple’s F1 feature was a potential game-changer in Hollywood. The unique deal, which calls for a wide theatrical release with a meaningful window, will have the creative team paid three ways: their upfront fees, hefty buyout fees and the theatrical backend. THR reported that instead of a token release in a few theaters or a day-and-date opening, the movie would have an exclusive — and global — run of at least 30 days (one source says it could even go as high as 60 days) before heading to the Apple TV+ platform.

The F1 feature is the second Apple starring vehicle for Pitt, with the Oscar-winning actor also appearing in Jon Watts’ upcoming thriller Wolves alongside George Clooney and Amy Ryan. Wolves was also subject to an intense bidding war among Hollywood’s studios and streamers.

MacDailyNews Take: Another big draw for Apple TV+ looms as the number of people who’d rather watch at home dwarfs the number who’ll first go see it at the movie theater.

Alphabet Inc. subsidiary Google is set to appoint manufacturing and policy veteran Sreenivasa Reddy as its top government affairs executive in India to tackle legal challenges and expand hardware assembly to the country.

Sankalp Phartiyal for Bloomberg News:

Reddy, currently a senior engineering executive at Microsoft Corp., is likely to join Google toward the end of this year, people familiar with the matter said, asking not to be identified as the matter is private. He previously worked in senior positions at Apple Inc.’s India regulatory team and headed government relations at the local unit of Swedish telecom-gear maker Ericsson AB, helping to drive domestic manufacturing at both companies.

Reddy’s experience will come in handy at Google, which is scouting for partners in India to assemble its Pixel range of smartphones as it seeks to diversify beyond China. Pixel’s production in India could lead to the local manufacturing of other Google hardware products, such as speakers.

The executive will also help Google navigate regulatory challenges. The Mountain View, California-based company is fighting antitrust charges in India, with authorities accusing it of abusing its dominant position in mobile operating systems.

MacDailyNews Take: People who buy Google Pixel phones should be studied to see if medication and/or electroshock therapy can help to improve their pitifully sad situation.

It’s already been a pretty eventful summer for science fiction fans. Last week saw the finale of Apple’s post-apocalyptic series Silo, Strange New Worlds season 2 is keeping Star Trek going through August, and Disney Plus is still in the midst of Secret Invasion, its alien conspiracy offshoot of the MCU. Oh, and there’s the return of Black Mirror. On top of all of that, there are also a number of series making their debut in the coming weeks and months — so many, in fact, that you might need a little help plotting out your precious free time. So here’s a handy list to make life a little easier.

Foundation season 2

Apple TV Plus – July 14th

Apple’s attempt at adapting Foundation got off to a slow start, but by the end of season 1 the sci-fi epic showed plenty of promise. The second season takes place a century later, and with much of the exposition out of the way, will hopefully be a little more exciting. It premieres on July 14th, with new episodes dropping on Fridays.

Futurama season 11

Hulu – July 24th

The return of Futurama has been a long time coming, but the 10 episode season is finally premiering later this month. It may technically be a show about the future, but as always, it looks like the show will be primarily exploring modern day issues through a retrofuturistic lens. New episodes will be hitting Hulu on Mondays.

Invasion season 2

Apple TV Plus – August 23rd

It’s the summer of invasions, it seems. Apple’s own take on the genre returns in August, with a season that promises to get right into the war between humans and their alien visitors. Season 1 chronicled the early days of the invasion from multiple perspectives, but the first images from season 2 make it look like things will get a bit more intense — and full of action. It premieres on August 23rd, with weekly episodes dropping every Wednesday.

Ahsoka

Disney Plus – August 23rd

The latest Star Wars spinoff puts the focus on Rosario Dawson’s former Jedi Knight, who viewers might remember from The Mandalorian, where she had the important task of revealing Grogu’s name. She returns for the new show, which follows the character “as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.” It debuts on August 23rd with new episodes on Wednesdays.

Loki season 2

Disney Plus – October 6th

OK, calling this summer is a stretch, but here on the east coast it can still be pretty muggy in October, so I’m counting it. We don’t know much about season 2, but the original run of Loki helped kick off the MCU diving headfirst into the multiverse, so it’ll likely get pretty weird. It starts streaming on October 6th, presumably meaning new episodes will drop on Fridays.
