Here’s How Interactive Widgets Work in macOS Sonoma

In macOS Sonoma, Apple has changed the widgets landscape. No longer do widgets have to be hidden offscreen and largely forgotten in the Notifications Center panel. Now they live right on your desktop – and they’re interactive, too.

It’s worth noting from the off that widgets can still be parked in Notification Center, but now they can also be dragged out onto the desktop. The first widget can be placed anywhere, then Apple provides placement guidance for subsequent widgets by displaying a widget-shaped outline, indicating where they can be snapped into position in relation to the others.

Alternatively, if you right-click on an empty space on the desktop, the menu that appears includes a new “Edit Widgets…” option. Selecting this brings up a widget gallery, which – thanks to a new Continuity feature between Apple devices – also includes widgets from your iPhone in all available sizes. So even if you don’t have the corresponding Mac app, you can still use the iOS widget right on your desktop. Simply drag it from the gallery into an available space.

If you’re running the macOS Sonoma beta, trying out iPhone widgets is a good way to get used to their interactivity until third-party developers have a chance to bake this into their Mac widgets. As it stands, only Apple’s own widgets offer (sometimes buggy) interactions.

In the Home app widget, for example, you can control specific accessories by clicking the individual buttons to turn them on and off.

If you right-click a widget, any available customization options appear in the contextual menu. Widgets are available in Small, Medium, and Large sizes, and all include an option to “Remove Widget” if you want to get rid of it.

Lastly, when not in use, widgets fade into the background by taking on the color of your wallpaper, so you can concentrate on the active app or window.

Widgets have evolved in macOS Sonoma. By bringing them in from the dark and out into the open workspace of your desktop, users are actively encouraged to work alongside them. Apple is making it easier for adults and minors to avoid unsolicited nudes in iOS 17

Apple’s Communication Safety feature for iPhone — designed to protect children from viewing nude images over iMessage — is being expanded to cover adult users in addition to video content and other communication methods. Announced during the WWDC event on Monday, the protections will arrive with iOS 17 later this year with all image and video processing happening right on the device itself to ensure everything is kept private, even from Apple.

The Communication Safety in Messages feature uses on-device machine learning to automatically blur nude images in iMessages before a child can view them. With iOS 17, the expanded feature will also protect children from viewing or sharing photos that contain nudity via AirDrop, new Contact Posters, FaceTime messages, and when browsing their image library using Photo Picker. Alongside still images, it can also scan video content for nudity. Apple hasn’t confirmed if this feature will also apply to live video content such as FaceTime video calls — we’ve reached out for clarification and will update this story should we hear back.

The pop-up displayed for the upcoming Sensitive Content Warning feature is identical to that already used on Communication Safety for Messages.

Right now, the Communication Safety tool is an opt-in feature within Apple’s existing Family Sharing system. It can only be applied to iMessages until iOS 17 arrives sometime in the fall. When enabled, the feature currently detects if a child is sending or receiving images that could contain nudity, subsequently warning the child and blurring the photograph before it’s viewed on the minor’s device. The child is also presented with helpful resources and the option to message a trusted adult for additional support.

Adults will soon also be able to reap similar protections from unsolicited nudes. “Sensitive Content Warning” is a new feature coming to iOS 17 that will warn users of any age if an image or video they’re receiving contains nudity. The content will be flagged in a pop-up message that asks users if they wish to view it anyway, alongside some reassurance and helpful guidance on staying safe, such as “It’s not your fault, but naked photos and videos can be used to hurt you.”

How to watch Apple’s WWDC Keynote Address

Free for all developers, Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will take place in an online format from June 5th through 9th, with an opportunity for developers and students to celebrate in person at a special experience at Apple Park on opening day. The biggest and most exciting WWDC to date launches with a first look at exciting updates coming to Apple platforms later this year.

The keynote presentation takes place on June 5th at 10 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. EDT. The keynote address will be available via apple.com, the Apple Developer app, the Apple TV app, and YouTube, with on-demand playback available after the conclusion of the stream.

The packed week of events and activities will help developers learn about the latest technologies, tools, and frameworks coming to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS. Throughout the week, developers will be able to connect directly with Apple engineers and experts through one-on-one labs and activities in Slack for guidance on building innovative and platform-differentiating apps and games.

Platforms State of the Union

Developers will learn how they can take their apps to the next level with a deeper dive into the new tools, technologies, and advances across Apple platforms. Platforms State of the Union will stream via the Apple Developer app and the Apple Developer website.

Participate in a technology or design Q&A, watch a session video and ask the presenter questions, or build community in an icebreaker activity.

The Apple Developer app is a great way to experience WWDC23 on Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, with daily updates and notifications on the latest news, content, and activities. Developers can browse content by topic, register for online Slack-based activities and one-on-one labs, watch videos with their peers using SharePlay, copy code directly from session videos into Xcode, read feature stories, and more.
