The amount available at the end of the day for either Apple or the Irish government from lengthy legal proceedings over the company’s Irish tax affairs lost almost a billion dollars in the last year ahead of the final ruling. If the EU wins, the sum will be handed over to the Irish government; if the EU loses, it will be returned to Apple.

The Irish Times:

A quick recap: the State set up the escrow account in 2018 to hold €14.3 billion of alleged back taxes and interest that the European Commission ordered it to collect from Apple, even as the State and the iPhone maker appealed the matter before the courts in Luxembourg.

Apple and the Government won their case in 2020, with the General Court in Luxembourg deciding that the commission failed to show to “the requisite legal standard” that the US tech giant secured an unfair tax advantage in the decade to 2014.

A hearing on the commission’s appeal against that decision was heard by the European Court of Justice last month, with the court’s advocate general set to deliver his influential opinion on November 9th – ahead of a final ruling.

The escrow account is mainly made up of investments in euro-zone government bonds, rather than cash. The Department of Finance said on Wednesday that a further €259 million was knocked off the fund’s value last year, to bring it down to less than €13.4 billion.

MacDailyNews Take: When Apple wins, it should be compensated for the lost value of their money as it languished in escrow while mired in poorly performing euro-zone government bonds.

Apple earlier this month introduced the new Mac Studio featuring M2 Max and the new M2 Ultra chips, delivering a huge boost in performance and enhanced connectivity in its compact design.

Mac Studio front (top image) and rear

Featuring up to 192GB of unified memory, Mac Studio with M2 Ultra has far more memory than the most advanced workstation graphics cards, taking on demanding workloads other systems can’t even process.

Mac Studio with M2 Max is up to 50 percent faster than the previous-generation Mac Studio and 4x faster than the most powerful Intel-based 27-inch iMac. It features a 12-core CPU, up to a 38-core GPU, and up to 96GB of unified memory with 400GB/s of memory bandwidth.

Mac Studio with M2 Ultra takes Mac performance to new heights. M2 Ultra delivers twice the performance and capabilities of M2 Max, and is Apple’s largest and most capable system on a chip (SoC) ever. Mac Studio with M2 Ultra is up to 3x faster than the previous-generation Mac Studio with M1 Ultra, and up to 6x faster than the most powerful Intel-based 27-inch iMac. It features a 24-core CPU, up to a 76-core GPU, and up to 192GB of memory with 800GB/s of unified memory bandwidth for workstation-class performance.

Brenda Stolyar for Wired:

The Mac Studio is the perfect middle ground for power users. It’s far more powerful than the 24-inch iMac ($1,299) as well as the Mac Mini ($599), but it’s thousands of dollars less than the new Mac Pro ($6,999). It’s the Goldilocks Mac—just right.

You have the choice to outfit it with the M2 Max ($1,999) or M2 Ultra ($3,999)—two of the most powerful Apple chips available—but this further encroaches on the Mac Pro’s territory, since Apple’s pricey desktop computer is also powered by the M2 Ultra. For the vast majority of folks that need a powerful machine, you don’t need to go Pro. The Studio is nearly as capable and far more compact.

Since my daily workflow consists of typing words into documents, sending emails, and web browsing, I handed the Mac Studio over to my partner, a professional videographer, to stress-test this machine.

We imported multiple streams of both ProRes and RED raw footage (about 10 gigabytes in total with a RED raw clip at an 8:1 compression) into Final Cut Pro to edit. We applied several color corrections and changed the camera log conversion LUTs over 20 times in real time, while also keeping it set to “better quality.” The M2 Ultra handled the footage like it was nothing—there were no dropped frames or stutters and everything was rendered quickly. Even applying noise reduction at “high amount” and “high sharpness” on a raw clip—changes that would normally bring an Intel-powered machine to a crawl—took less than 20 seconds on a four-minute clip…

Power users should opt for the Ultra only if they’re working with high-level graphics, visual effects, or any other types of highly intensive content. Otherwise you can save some money and stick to the just-as-capable M2 Max.

Apple Vision Pro, Apple’s new “spatial computing” device, does not have a hardware-based control mechanism. It relies on eye tracking and hand gestures to allow users to manipulate objects in the virtual space in front of them. In a recent developer session, Apple designers outlined the specific gestures that can be used with Vision Pro, and how some of the interactions will work.

Tap – Tapping the thumb and the index finger together signals to the headset that you want to tap on a virtual element on the display that you’re looking at. Users have also described this as a pinch, and it is the equivalent to tapping on the screen of an iPhone.

Double Tap – Tapping twice initiates a double tap gesture.

Pinch and Hold – A pinch and a hold is similar to a tap and hold gesture, and it does things like highlighting text.

Pinch and Drag – Pinching and dragging can be used to scroll and to move windows around. You can scroll horizontally or vertically, and if you move your hand faster, you’ll be able to scroll faster.

Zoom – Zoom is one of two main two-handed gestures. You can pinch your fingers together and pull your hands apart to zoom in, and presumably zooming out will have a pushing sort of motion. Window sizes can also be adjusted by dragging at the corners.

Rotate – Rotate is the other two-handed gesture and based on Apple’s chart, it will involve pinching the fingers together and rotating the hands to manipulate virtual objects.

Gestures will work in tandem with eye movements, and the many cameras in the Vision Pro will track where you are looking with great accuracy. Eye position will be a key factor in targeting what you want to interact with using hand gestures. As an example, looking at an app icon or on-screen element targets it and highlights it, and then you can follow up with a gesture.

Hand gestures do not need to be grand, and you can keep your hands in your lap. Apple is encouraging that, in fact, because it will keep your hands and arms from getting tired from being held in the air. You only need a tiny pinch gesture for the equivalent of a tap, because the cameras can track precise movements.

What you’re looking at will let you select and manipulate objects that are both close to you and far from you, and Apple does anticipate scenarios where you might want to use larger gestures to control objects that are right in front of you. You can reach out and use your fingertips to interact with an object. For example, if you have a Safari window right in front of you, you can reach your hand out and scroll from there rather than using your fingers in your lap.

In addition to gestures, the headset will support hand movements such as air typing, though it doesn’t seem like those who have received a demo have been able to try this feature as of yet. Gestures will work together, of course, and to do something like create a drawing, you’ll look at a spot on the canvas, select a brush with your hand, and use a gesture in the air to draw. If you look elsewhere, you’ll be able to move the cursor immediately to where you’re looking.

While these are the six main system gestures that Apple has described, developers can create custom gestures for their apps that will perform other actions. Developers will need to make sure custom gestures are distinct from the system gestures or common hand movements that people might use, and that the gestures can be repeated frequently without hand strain.

To supplement hand and eye gestures, Bluetooth keyboards, trackpads, mice, and game controllers can be connected to the headset, and there are also voice-based search and dictation tools.

Multiple people who have been able to try the Vision Pro have had the same word to describe the control system – intuitive. Apple’s designers seem to have created it to work similarly to multitouch gestures on the ‌iPhone‌ and the iPad, and so far, reactions have been positive.

MacRumors videographer Dan Barbera was able to try out the headset and he was impressed with the controls. You can see his full overview of his experience on our YouTube channel.

@macrumors Eye tracking and pinching is the interface on the new #AppleVisionPro and we could to try jt out! #Apple #VR #AR ♬ original sound – MacRumors

The Apple Vision Pro. | Image: Vjeran Pavic / The Verge

I tried the Vision Pro, and just like the introduction of the iPhone 4 over a decade ago, there’s no going back from here.

I still remember using the iPhone 4 for the first time in 2010. That was when Apple shipped its first-ever Retina display and Steve Jobs said that, once you use it, “you can’t go back.” It was something I couldn’t unsee, like looking through prescription glasses for the first time.

That’s exactly how I felt after a demo of the Apple Vision Pro yesterday at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. A computer you strap to your face should be primarily judged not only by what you can do with it but also by the quality of what you can see through it. The Vision Pro blows away every other headset in this regard. It’s the industry’s Retina display moment. There’s no going back.

The headset packs an insane 23 megapixels into dual MicroOLED panels, meaning that each eye looks through a roughly 4K display. The $1,000 Meta Quest Pro, by contrast, has a resolution of 1800 x 1920 per eye. For those who need vision correction like me, Apple has partnered with Zeiss to sell prescription inserts that clip onto the inner-facing displays. That helps make the headset not only thinner but, in my experience, also much more comfortable to wear.

After scanning my face and ears on an iPhone to calibrate the device to my head (the experience will be immediately familiar to anyone who has set up Face ID), I handed my glasses to an optometrist Apple had on-site to have my prescription made for the demo. After a few minutes, I was whisked into another brightly lit, temperature-controlled room with a headset that had my prescription inserted.

I wasn’t allowed to record or capture footage of my Vision Pro demo, so this photo from Apple will have to do.

Visually, the most memorable experience of my roughly 30-minute, highly controlled demo wasn’t the butterfly landing on my finger, the 3D Avatar clip, or even viewing Apple’s new surreal 3D photos and videos. It was when I had three windows open at once for Messages, Safari, and Photos. I used the headset’s eye tracking and pinching gesture to quickly (and I do mean quickly — navigating this way is incredibly intuitive) place each window at a different depth in the room.

I placed Messages to my immediate right and almost uncomfortably close to my face, Safari in the middle of the room, and Photos against the wall I was facing. I could see Messages up close just as clearly as the text in the Photos app more than eight feet away. There were no discernible pixels anywhere.

My colleague David Pierce, who also tried the Vision Pro this week, has already pointed out that it will be a great TV. I agree and could see myself actually watching a movie in it, which is something I’d never say about the other headsets out there. It’s clear that Apple chose not to compromise on the quality of the visual experience, even if it means that buying the Vision Pro with prescription inserts will likely cost as much as a used Ford Focus.

There’s plenty about the Vision Pro that remains to be seen, namely the front face display that can show where the wearer’s eyes are looking. It wasn’t turned on for my demo and appears to not be finished. I wasn’t allowed to use the virtual keyboard, and the ability to take what Apple is calling “spatial” photos and videos through a dedicated button on the headset wasn’t enabled. I fully expect the software I experienced to change a lot before the device ships next year, which makes it easiest to judge the Vision Pro on what won’t change.

It’s easiest to judge the Vision Pro on what won’t change

Apple’s goal for the Vision Pro is clearly to get developers building for the headset and figuring out its killer apps for future, cheaper versions, so not compromising on the display initially is the right call. It’s a compelling enough leap forward for headset optics alone to make the device worth trying. Like that first Retina display, it’s something you can’t unsee.

The long-awaited iPad version of Final Cut Pro is here and, with it, a touch-friendly design and accessible pricing. But if you’re coming from Final Cut on the Mac, you might be a little disappointed.

One of my favorite ways to edit photos is on an iPad — pinching the screen to zoom feels natural, the Apple Pencil is the perfect way to brush in adjustments, and even the apps are getting better over time. But I have not been able to replicate that setup for video editing. LumaFusion never did it for me, and despite my YouTube recommendations being filled with “I switched to DaVinci Resolve. Here’s why” videos, I haven’t made that switch yet.

Here at The Verge, we’re all mostly Adobe users, but for my personal work, I like to play around with Final Cut Pro, so the news that it’s coming to the iPad was exciting for me. Except that I own a 2018 iPad Pro — the one with an A12X Bionic chip. Final Cut Pro won’t work on those. You’ll need an M1- or M2-powered iPad. So Apple sent me a loaner to test out the new Final Cut Pro.

The top-of-the-line 12.9-inch iPad Pro with an M2 processor will set you back $2,399.

Final Cut Pro for iPad is a carefully designed app that gets a lot of the basics right. It’s a great adaptation of its desktop app, and FCP users will feel right at home. It also takes advantage of the iPad’s touch-first interface and utilizes accessories like the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil well. It’s also priced accessibly — Apple is selling it as a subscription at $5 per month or $50 per year, which makes it easy to use for a month or two to see if it’s something you want to stick with.

But if you’re hoping that it’s a complete drop-in replacement for the Mac version of Final Cut Pro, you’ll likely come away disappointed. There are still many features omitted from this version that I missed throughout my testing of it. And if you’re the type of editor who wants to work on both the iPad and the Mac, you’re going to need to be careful with how you organize your projects and which device you start out with.

File management

The 12.9-inch iPad that Apple loaned me for this piece came with a 2TB drive and 16GB of RAM paired with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil. The total cost of this setup is $2,877. ($2,399 if you ditch the accessories.) And you’ll want an iPad with more storage because one of the first limitations of Final Cut Pro on the iPad is that you can’t edit off of external drives. All of your media files will have to live on your iPad inside the Files app. I do think we’re at the point where SSDs are fast enough to handle this workload, so it’s an odd limitation. There will be more of those as we go on.

Another small limitation comes when importing files. You can’t export folders as a whole; you’ll have to open up each folder and manually select clips you want to import. So if you’re serious about your file management and are used to a specific folder hierarchy, you won’t be able to replicate that here.

This also means that there are no events or Smart Collections (or “bins” for Premiere users) inside the library. It all lives in the media window on the top-right corner of the screen. You can add keywords and add “favorite” or “rejected” labels. And you can sort media by said labels and media type.

Workspace layout

As soon as you launch the app, you’ll feel right at home. The setup looks fairly similar to what you’d see on a desktop Final Cut Pro, just a bit smaller and a bit cramped — but not quite claustrophobic. You can resize each window and hide some for a cleaner setup. There’s also a picture-in-picture view in case you need a better look at your media. Preview window, where you play back your clips, is still in the top-left corner, and you can choose between quality or performance playback. The editing timeline runs along the bottom edge, and just below it are a few new buttons — inspect, volume, animate, and multicam. This is where you’ll go to start making adjustments to your clips.

The layout looks very similar to the desktop version of Final Cut Pro.

The inspect button brings up the inspector sidebar over from the left-hand side, and I actually really like how that looks. It also makes a lot of sense if you’re editing while holding your iPad in both hands. You can select clips with your right hand, and your left hand is already in place to start making adjustments in that sidebar.

In this window is where you’d also hope to find stabilization and rolling shutter correction options, but neither of those options is available. As someone who films a lot on a slider, losing stabilization is frustrating.

Keyframes and animation

Tapping on the animate button brings up this keyframe editing graph. It’s where you’ll add keyframes and animate movement of your clips or coloring adjustments. While I think the user experience could be better (for example, tapping on the keyframe itself doesn’t select it), the bigger issue I have is that all of the keyframed transitions you do in FCP on an iPad are linear by default and can’t be changed. There is no way to “ease out” or “ease in” movements.

Tapping on the volume buttons reveals audio metering and the gain slider on each side of the timeline. And there are some useful audio effects you can use — including basic fade-ins, fade-outs, pans, and more ambitious effects like EQ and Compressor. The iPad version of Final Cut Pro also has a few audio effects that were recently added to FCP on desktop. Voice Isolation, loudness, and noise removal are all here and work just as well.

Live Drawings and masking

But there are a few new features exclusive to the FCP on iPad, including one that made my life a lot easier. If you have an Apple Pencil, you can freely draw or write on top of your footage and then animate it. It’s called Live Drawing, and it’s fantastic. I think more creative people than myself can really take advantage of it, but I was able to get some nice text and sketches animating onto my clips. But it’s also one of those things that might get too repetitive soon. I hope Apple adds some more brush options in the future.

Live Drawings can be really fun, and I’m excited to see how people start using it. Here are two clips I was happy with.

There’s also a new masking effect called Auto Scene Removal, which, in After Effects terms, is called rotoscoping. It’s what you’d do to separate your subject, like a person or pet, from the background in order to place text behind them. It, unfortunately, hasn’t worked well for me at all. Apple’s demos show it working only on static shots with very clear separation between the two, but even when I tried to replicate them, I had very little success, with the title flickering between the subject and background or generally just getting lost. I was expecting a lot more there.

The Auto Scene Removal masking effect has rarely worked for me. Apple recommends using static images with high-contrast areas, but even then, my results were less than ideal.

Apple also added about 40 songs that you can freely use. What’s cool about those is that FCP will automatically retime the song so it fits your timeline. Any of these songs can be 10 seconds or 10 minutes long. But this only works with those 40 songs. This is something I used to do in Audition, but Adobe added this specific feature to Premiere, and it works with any song you want.

Color correction

Let’s talk about color. For folks filming in LOG profiles, I have some bad news. There’s no way to add custom LUTs, but not all hope is lost. FCP offers you some widely used built-in LUTs from Canon, Arri, Blackmagic, Sony, etc. For me, that means I can’t use my Fuji footage or DJI LUTs. You also can’t add third-party plug-ins, but Apple says those are coming, so maybe LUTs will be part of that in the future, though there’s no timeline on when that will happen.

But there are some things you can get done without LUTs. When opening up the color adjustment effects, all you get are sliders. There aren’t traditional curves, color board, color wheels, or HSL curves like on the desktop version. I was never a fan of those, but I still prefer that over basic sliders like the ones you see here. You can still make a lot of adjustments here, but I wish this interface were more consistent. And lastly, there are scopes, vectorscopes, and histograms where you can monitor your coloring.

Color board and color wheels are entirely replaced by sliders. You can also monitor your color and exposure using histograms, vectorscopes, and waveforms.

Some editors will want to send this project to DaVinci because they prefer coloring there. But that’s not possible. FCP also can’t export or import XML files that you usually use to copy your timelines into other apps. In fact, you can only transfer FCP libraries from an iPad to a Mac and not the other way around. Which also means you have to make a decision on which machine you’d use to start and finish the edit and hope you made the right bet.

Keyboard shortcuts and the Jog Wheel

In general, I do like the user interface across the app. There are some nice changes from the desktop version that fit very well on an iPad. Apple made sure you can use FCP with just your hands, and to make things easier, there’s a new little feature called Jog Wheel.

If you’ve seen or used a Loupedeck or DaVinci Resolve’s physical wheel, it’s basically that but digital. You can use it in your timeline to move your playhead or nudge the clip backward and forward. You can’t use it to fine-tune your slider when adjusting color, just to control your clips and playhead in the timeline.

You can place it anywhere along the sides of the screen, which is helpful if you’re left-handed and particularly helpful, maybe even mandatory, if you’re using your hands to edit. I love it.

Digital Jog Wheel is a great way to scrub through the timeline, especially when using the iPad handheld.

But I still prefer editing with the keyboard and a trackpad or mouse — mostly because I’m so used to using keyboard shortcuts, and I’m a much faster editor that way.

Almost all of the usual keyboard shortcuts work — things like I and O for in and out points, J-K-L for playback, fast-forward, rewind, zoom in, zoom out, jumping around the timeline, adding cross dissolves, etc. But I’m surprised to see which ones are omitted. Here’s a short list of the ones that I normally use on the desktop that aren’t available on the iPad:

V for enabling and disabling the clip.

N for turning snapping on and off.

M for markers. Those are just fully gone. I can live without those.

Option-W for adding blank space is gone.

Cmd-E — no export shortcut

Option-G for compounding clips is gone — both the shortcut and the feature.

Tilde (~), which is sort of this magical pro tier keyboard shortcut that helps you override connecting points on a timeline. You should totally use it if you already don’t… but not on here because it’s gone.

Battery life and performance

Unsurprisingly, there’s little to complain about when it comes to performance in Final Cut Pro on the iPad. Everything runs smoothly and quickly. Even adding superlong files didn’t cause any hiccups. There’s an option to set playback previews to prioritize performance or quality, and I went with performance. But I did notice the battery life depleting quickly. I was down to 43 percent after about two hours of editing with the screen at a comfortable brightness. The conspiracy brain in me makes me wonder if the main reason why we can’t edit off of external drives is because we’ll need to keep our iPad plugged in instead.

Overall, there are a lot of things I liked about editing with Final Cut Pro on the iPad. But I’m surprised at how many of the features are missing — the coloring options are lacking, some very common features like the blade tool or ability to enable and disable clips are gone, you can’t import LUTs, the stabilization is missing… I could go on. I wouldn’t even say these are necessarily “professional” level tools. And I already talked about the whole file management side of things. It baffles me!

Scrubbing the timeline while hovering above the screen with an Apple Pencil was one of my favorite features.

On the other hand, I’m editing 4K ProRes video in Final Cut Pro on a tablet with one of the best HDR-enabled screens ever made. I’m using an Apple Pencil to draw animations directly onto my footage. The experience itself is remarkably good, and for $5 a month, it’s a very accessible, powerful tool. But ultimately, when it was time to edit the video I created to test out Final Cut, I went back to the Mac. I could have done it on the iPad, sure. But some of my slider B-roll would’ve been a lot shakier, and I would have been frustrated with the end result.

If you’re starting out, this will be an incredibly intuitive and easy app to get going. But for someone with an established workflow like myself, it’s still missing some crucial features.

I love it.
