Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Tuesday that police have directed Apple and Google to block scammers from impersonating government agencies on their messaging platforms.

Singapore has ordered Apple to block or filter messages on iMessage that impersonate government agencies, requiring the company to implement new anti-spoofing protections by December as part of efforts to curb rising online scams, the Straits Times reports.

Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that it had issued an Implementation Directive to Apple under the Online Criminal Harms Act, instructing the company to prevent iMessage accounts and group chats from using names that mimic Singapore government agencies or the “gov.sg” sender ID. The directive also applies to Google Messages, with both companies required to comply by November 30.

MHA said the order was necessary because iMessage does not currently support the safeguards built into Singapore’s registered SMS sender ID system. Since July 2024, legitimate messages sent by Singapore government agencies through traditional SMS channels have used the “gov.sg” sender ID to help the public verify authenticity.

Messages sent via iMessage, however, do not pass through the same ID registry and therefore allow scammers to present themselves using identical or near-identical identifiers. The ministry cited more than 120 police reports in which scammers impersonated registered sender IDs.

As part of the directive, Apple must now ensure that profile names of unknown iMessage senders are either not displayed or are shown less prominently than the phone numbers associated with the account. Authorities said this requirement is intended to give users a clearer view of the identity information least susceptible to manipulation. Messages or group chats that appear to spoof government identifiers must either be blocked entirely or filtered so that recipients do not see them.

Apple’s compliance will require changes to iMessage’s display logic and name-handling behavior in Singapore, creating an exception to the platform’s long-standing reliance on unverified user-defined sender names in one-to-one and group messaging threads. iMessage does not currently use a sender ID registry or external name verification scheme, and the new rules mark one of the first instances of a government requiring compulsory filtering for specific categories of display names within Apple’s messaging ecosystem.

The MHA said Apple and Google have indicated that they will comply with the directive. If they fail to implement the mandated controls, the companies could face penalties.

Apple is planning to announce several new features for the Messages and Phone apps on iOS 26, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

In a lengthy report outlining his WWDC 2025 expectations today, Gurman said that the two main changes in the Messages app will be the ability to create polls, as well as the option to set a background image within a conversation.

9to5Mac was first to report that the Messages app would be gaining polls, allowing users to vote on questions and topics. It is a feature that has long existed in other popular messaging apps, such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram.

Background images would add a personalized flair to conversations, and Gurman said that the images will automatically sync across Apple devices.

For the Phone app, Gurman said that iOS 26 will introduce a new view that combines favorite contacts, recent calls, and voicemails into a single, scrollable window. He said this new design will be optional, with users able to revert to the legacy interface if they prefer.

iOS 26 and other updates will be announced during Apple’s WWDC 2025 keynote, which begins on Monday, June 9 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

At the Android Show before Google I/O, Google provided an update on RCS (Rich Communication Services) adoption, a modern SMS alternative with features like high-resolution media, typing indicators, read receipts, and enhanced group chats. The company announced that the messaging standard now handles over a billion daily messages in America, based on a 28-day average, Google stated.

Sara Perez for TechCrunch:
‎

The stat is notable because Google fought for years to get Apple to adopt support for RCS on iOS, allowing for better communication between Android and Apple devices. Previously, iPhone users who received texts from friends on Android had to deal with blurry videos and images, and couldn’t as easily manage group chats when their green-bubbled friends joined. Unlike with iMessage, group chats with Android users couldn’t be renamed, nor could people be added or removed, and you couldn’t exit when you wanted. Emoji reactions also didn’t work properly, leading to annoying texts to let you know how an Android user reacted, instead of just displaying their emoji reaction directly.

That changed with the fall 2024 launch of iOS 18, when Apple finally added RCS support to its Messages app.
