Of the big Apple events of the year, WWDC is the most reliable: In each of the past 16 Junes, like clockwork, Apple has held a big get-together for its developer partners and announced a raft of important software updates. The September iPhone launch and the March/April spring event (which didn’t happen in 2023) seem almost unpredictable by comparison.

In this article, we list the major announcements (and some of the smaller titbits) you can expect to hear about at WWDC 2023 this June. Some of these–updates to the five big Apple operating systems, most obviously–are as predictable as the timing of the event. But we reckon Apple will spring a few surprises too.

WWDC 2023 will kick off on Monday, June 5 and the entire conference and its workshops will be held online. Apple will have a “special in-person experience” for some developers and students to watch the keynote live at Apple Park—but the event will be streamed live for the world to watch.

On May 10 2023 Apple announced plans to bring Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to the iPad Pro, which is the kind of news we’d have expected Apple to reserve for the WWDC event. Does Apple’s small announcement a month before indicate that there will be big news at WWDC itself? Read on to find out what’s in store.

What is WWDC?

WWDC stands for the Worldwide Developers Conference and is dedicated to the third-party software developers that create apps for Apple’s platforms: iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc. Apple invites developers to participate in a series of classes, workshops, and sessions to learn about the system-wide changes coming to the major software platforms in the coming year so they can update their apps.

WWDC is a week-long gathering, beginning with a keynote speech on Monday morning. It generally happens in early June, although the Covid pandemic led to a slight delay in 2020. In reality, while devs are at the heart of the event, it’s also a press event that Apple uses to announce its software plans and potentially some new Macs and other products to the world.

Apple will live stream the opening keynote for all on its website (check Apple’s events page) and elsewhere, such as on YouTube and on the Apple TV app. This means you’ll be able to watch the presentation on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and even PC.

Some lucky developers will be able to watch the event live in person, but there will be a lot of competition for those tickets which will be randomly selected from those to apply and aren’t transferable.

Apple Entrepreneur Camp alumni

Swift Student Challenge winners (2020 to 2022) – 2023 challenge applicants are included in a separate random selection process for winners, in early May Apple began alerting the lucky few of their status as winners.

Current Apple Developer Enterprise Program members

Lucky applicants will be notified of their success in getting a ticket by April 5.

WWDC keynote tickets have been free and randomly distributed for the past few years, but previously cost $1,599 for developers to attend and sold out very quickly. In 2022 developers were invited to watch the keynote live at Apple Park, though the event was still prerecorded. The same setup will be used in 2023.

Even without a ticket, all registered Apple developers get online access to session videos, slides, and sample code throughout the week.

WWDC 2023: Software releases

WWDC is all about the software, so we can be certain that Apple will reveal details of its upcoming operating system updates for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, HomePod, and Apple Watch. Those updates will then be issued to developers as a beta to test, then a few weeks later a public beta will start. Eventually, the new software will be available for everyone to download in the fall (usually September for iOS/iPadOS/watchOS and October for macOS). Here’s what to expect:

iOS 17

The headliner of the event simply because of the sheer number of iPhone owners across the planet. If you’ve got an iPhone made within the past five years, you’ll likely be able to install the new version of iOS when it’s released in the fall of 2023.

Among the rumors we’ve heard about iOS 17 are that it will mainly focus on performance improvements but still bring enhancements to the Control Center, Dynamic Island, and Spotlight search, as well as updated versions of the Camera and Health apps.

But before then, there’s a whole beta-testing cycle to get through. iOS 17 will be announced at WWDC 2023, then released as a developer beta (for registered app developers only) almost immediately after the keynote. Developers will then be able to install the iOS beta and a few weeks later a public beta version will be made available for all users who want to try the new features. Our advice is to be cautious and prepared for serious flaws with the beta software–it might even brick your device.

Over the course of the next few months, the developer and public betas will go through a testing process where features will be tweaked, changed, fixed, and updated until we reach the finished iOS 17.0 public release, most likely in September.

Read all the rumors and our hopes for iOS 17 in our iOS 17 guide.

iPadOS 17

The accompanying update for iPad owners, iPadOS 17 is likely to incorporate most of the new features of iOS 17 but adapted to a larger-screen interface. When Apple’s two mobile operating systems split in 2019 they were similar in most respects, but the iPad version is heading steadily into its own realm.

Among the new features likely to arrive in iPadOS 17 are the customizable Lock Screen released in iOS 16 and other smaller enhancements. It has also been reported that the update will drop support for the 1st-gen iPad Pro (9.7- and 12.9-inch) and the 5th-gen iPad.

In 2022, Apple released iPad OS 16 a month after iOS 16, so it’s possible that the two versions don’t arrive at the same time.

Read all the rumors and our hopes for iPadOS 17 in our iPadOS 17 guide.

macOS 14

What’s Apple got in store for its follow-up to macOS Ventura? We’ll find out at WWDC 2023.

This version will be numbered macOS 14, but what is less predictable is the California landmark Apple will name the version after. So far we’ve had: Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey, and Ventura. It’s been reported that macOS 14 will be more of a maintenance release than a feature-packed one, so it’s possible that Apple chooses a place near Ventura. Based on the trademarks Apple has applied for, macOS Rincon or Skyline or likely.

Read all the rumors and our hopes for macOS 14 in our macOS 14 guide.

watchOS 10

The new operating system for the Apple Watch will be revealed at WWDC 2023. This is more of a niche than the iPhone, iPad, and Mac updates discussed above but could bring more health and fitness features to Apple Watch owners around the world. In April, Mark Gurman reported that watchOS 10 will have “notable changes to the user interface” and “should be a fairly extensive upgrade.”

Last year’s watchOS 9 update was available for those running a Series 4 or later. If you’ve got a Series 4 or later, hopefully, the same will be true of watchOS 10.

Read all the rumors and our hopes for watchOS 10 in our watchOS 10 guide.

tvOS 17

The lowest-profile of the five big Apple operating systems, tvOS is the platform that runs on the Apple TV.

Probably the biggest addition in last year’s tvOS 16 update was support for Matter-compatible devices and support for more gaming controllers. What will we get this year? You’ll find out at WWDC.

HomePod software version 17

Apple is also likely to update the software on the HomePod and HomePod mini alongside the other operating systems. In 2022 Apple introduced HomePod Software Version 16 which didn’t bring a lot of new features at the time, but a later update: HomePod Software Version 16.3 brought temperature and humidity sensing to the HomePod mini and more. We may hear more about Apple’s plans for the HomePod during the WWDC event–especially as Apple is rumored to planning big changes to the HomePod in 2024.

WWDC 2023: Hardware releases

WWDC tends to be a software-focused event, but Apple has often found time during its WWDC keynotes to launch hardware products too. The first few iPhone revisions—iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPhone 4S—were all released at WWDC, and the HomePod had its unveiling at the event in 2017 as well.

However, the event has focused on Mac releases in recent years. Apple unveiled the iMac Pro in 2017 alongside updates to the iMac, MacBook, and MacBook Pro, and announced a new Mac Pro and the Pro Display XDR in June 2019. At WWDC 2020, Apple announced the transition from Intel to Apple silicon, and WWDC 2022 saw Apple launch the M2 chip in the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

What’s in the hardware pipeline for Apple right now? There are plenty of WWDC rumors, but what’s really coming? Here’s what we hope to see:

Reality Pro headset

This is the big one. Apple has been rumored to launch a new AR/VR headset for years, and it is finally expected to arrive sometime in 2023, and there are strong rumors that the WWDC keynote will be the big day. With an extremely high price tag, the device is expected to be mostly geared toward developers, so WWDC would be a great opportunity for Apple to debut the new device, even if it doesn’t launch until later in the year.

The headset is rumored to look like a pair of ski goggles, with 8K displays, numerous cameras, and an external battery pack, with a price tag that could top $3,000. However, it will be one of the most important product launches in years, as Apple looks beyond the iPhone into a whole new category of wearable devices. It’s expected to introduce an entirely new platform of apps and services geared toward an immersive experience

If Apple launches its headset, a major component of the presentation will be the rumored xrOS (extended reality OS). Apple will outline the major features, developer tools, and strategies for the operating system, which is expected to focus on entertainment and communication.

Apple displayed this special Swift logo on its WWDC 2023 website.

Apple

On May 23, Apple updated its WWDC website with a new animation of the Swift logo morphing from 2D to 3D. Some think this is a big hint that Apple will showcase the headset.

Mac Pro

Over the years, new Mac Pro models have launched at WWDC and this year could be no different. By the time Apple takes the stage at the WWDC event, it will have been three years since it announced its plans to move from Intel to its own silicon, and the Mac Pro is the only Mac that hasn’t made the transition.

The latest Mac Pro rumors say the machine will have an M2 Ultra processor and a similar design to the current model. Rumors are unclear whether the high-end Mac will launch at WWDC, but the previous two models both made their debuts on the WWDC stage, so it’s a distinct possibility.

15-inch MacBook Air

Apple is said to be working on a larger version of the MacBook Air with a 15-inch display and we could see it at WWDC if it doesn’t arrive before then. We don’t know exactly what the rest of the machine will bring, but we expect it to be very similar to the current Air, possibly with the addition of an M2 Pro chip.

Mac Studio

With the launch of the M2 Ultra, Apple is rumored to give the Mac Studio a processor refresh. Little else is expected to change about the machine other than higher-end RAM and storage options.

iMac

By the time of the WWDC keynote, the 24-inch iMac will be more than two years old. A WWDC update would make sense, but the rumors are suggesting Apple is waiting for the M3 chip before it updates the iMac, so that new Mac may not launch until later in the year.

When Apple launched the Mac Studio in 2022 it also discontinued the 27-inch iMac, but that doesn’t mean that the large iMac is dead. In fact, Apple may have plans to bring back the larger iMac. Read the rumors about Apple’s plans for a 27-inch iMac Pro. However, while Apple is reportedly working on a 42-inch iMac with an OLED display, it’s likely going to launch in 2024 or 2025.

Apple put a lot of effort into making its early slate of Apple TV+ original shows a little bit of something for everyone. All the company needed was one breakout hit to put the service on the map.

While the quality was good, none of the shows got that “everyone is talking about it” quality until, almost a year after the debut of Apple TV+, one of the shows that weren’t very heavily promoted became a runaway hit. Combing niceness and good cheer with soccer seems like a recipe that could never succeed in the U.S., but Ted Lasso managed to charm everyone just the same. The show immediately became the most-watched show on Apple TV+.

The first season received 20 Emmy nominations, and it won seven. The second season also got 20 nominations and won four. After a long break, “Ted Lasso” is finally back for its third, and likely final season. If it continues, it will likely be in a different form following one of the other characters.

Additionally, Apple also puts shows up for free on Apple TV from time to time.

How can I watch previous seasons of ‘Ted Lasso’?

Just like season 3, you can watch previous seasons on Apple TV+.

Did ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 2 end on a cliffhanger?

Sort of. Despite being promoted to the Premier League, longtime Richmond coach Nate Shelley left the club to become the new manager of rival West Ham United.

What’s ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 3 about?

Here’s how Apple describes the third season plot: In the third season of Ted Lasso, the newly-promoted AFC Richmond faces ridicule as media predictions widely peg them as last in the Premier League and Nate, now hailed as the “wonder kid,” has gone to work for Rupert at West Ham United. In the wake of Nate’s contentious departure from Richmond, Roy Kent steps up as assistant coach, alongside Beard. Meanwhile, while Ted deals with pressures at work, he continues to wrestle with his own personal issues back home, Rebecca is focused on defeating Rupert, and Keeley navigates being the boss of her own PR agency. Things seem to be falling apart both on and off the pitch, but Team Lasso is set to give it their best shot anyway.

Will this be the last season of ‘Ted Lasso’?

It looks like it! In an interview with Deadline, the show’s star, Jason Sudeikis, said, “This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell.” Sudeikis does seem open to the idea of spinoff series. In an Instagram post following the final episode, Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent, wrote, “I will miss getting to live in that world with them.”

Goldstein, who is also a writer and producer on the series, was quoted in a piece in The Times U.K. as saying that the show was always planned as three seasons, a sentiment echoed by Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt (coach Beard). When asked if season three would be the last, he said, “We are writing it like that.”

But in none of Apple’s promotional material is season 3 hailed as the grand finale for Ted Lasso. However, Apple also hasn’t announced that the show has been picked up for a fourth season, which also seems odd given the show’s popularity and the rumors about the final season.

It appears that Apple and the show’s creators were perhaps not prepared for how successful and beloved the show would be, and it would likely only take some small changes to the Season 3 finale to leave the door open for further seasons.

Where can I buy ‘Ted Lasso’ merch?

They also sell Ted Lasso soccer balls, AFC Richmond hoodies, a Ted Lasso tea set, a Ted Lasso dartboard, and a lot more.
Apple doesn’t often participate in big industry-wide events such as CES or E3. The most valuable company in the world holds its own events, thank you very much. Several times a year, Apple invites the press and industry professionals to Appel Park to hear all about its latest products and services. Apple calls these “events,” and streams them live online to millions of watchers.

In 2022, there were three such events: A spring event on March 8, WWDC on June 6, and the iPhone 14 launch on September 7. An additional event was expected in October or November but never materialized. In 2023, we expect at least three Apple events. Read on to find out what events and new Apple product launches the company might have in store for 2023.

Update May 23, 2023: Apple has officially invited select people to attend the WWDC keynote on June 5.

When is Apple’s next event?

The next event in Apple’s calendar will be the keynote that kicks off WWDC, it’s Worldwide Developers Conference, which Apple has confirmed will take place on Monday June 5, 2023, more details below.

When does Apple hold events?

Apple holds three or four live or live-streamed events throughout the year where the company unveils its latest products and plans during a keynote address. They are usually held during similar times of the year:

March/April: Spring event

June: WWDC

September: Fall event

October: Final event

This event calendar is by no means set in stone though, with the spring and October events being less regular. Some years, Apple doesn’t hold a spring event at all, as was the case in 2023.

The summer and September events are more predictable, with software coming at WWDC in June and iPhones and Apple Watches in September. The October event often sees Apple launch new Macs, but this is another one that changes from year-to-year.

Here’s what that translates to in the countries where most of our readers live:

U.S.: at 10 am (PST/PDT), 11 am (MST/MDT), noon (CST/CDT), 1 pm (EST/EDT)

Canada: as above, and 2 pm (AST/ADT)

U.K.: at 6 pm (GMT/BST)

Europe: at 7pm (CET/CEST)

India: at 10.30 pm (IST)

Australia: Following day at 1 am (AWST/AWDT), 2.30 am (ACST/ACDT), 3 am (AEST/AEDT)

New Zealand: next day at 5 am (NZST/NZDT)

How long does an Apple event last?

Apple keynotes usually last between one and two hours and feature CEO Tim Cook along with various other Apple executives including Craig Federighi, John Ternus, Erin Turullols, and others. WWDC and the September event tend to be the longer keynotes.

What Apple events will take place in 2023?

Based on past history and recent rumors, here are the events we expect to see across the remainder of 2023:

WWDC: June 2023

WWDC is scheduled for the first week of June, 2023 and the keynote is confirmed for Monday June 5.

Following the keynote on the Monday, developer events and sessions will run throughout the week. Read more about WWDC 2023 date, times and everything you need to know about what will launch in our separate article.

WWDC 2023: June 5-9

WWDC 2022: June 6-10

WWDC 2021: June 7-11

WWDC 2020: June 22-26

WWDC 2019: June 3-7

WWDC 2018: June 4-8

WWDC 2017: June 5-9

Apple uses WWDC each year to unveil the latest versions of its operating systems, so this year we’ll get a preview of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14, watchOS 10, and tvOS 17, and possibly for the first time xrOS, Apple’s mixed-reality OS. New hardware sometimes makes an appearance at WWDC as well. In 2022, Apple used the keynote to unveil the M2 chip which debuted in the 13-inch MacBook Pro and redesigned MacBook Air models.

Apple is expected to unveil its AR headset at a the WWDC event. This will be a whole new device category for Apple. It’s expected to cost upwards of $3,000 and might not ship until the fall—though the device will be a precursor to the eventual release of wearable Apple glasses. Also on the list for possible releases are a new 15-inch MacBook Air and a Mac Pro with Apple silicon, the last Mac to still have an Intel processor.

Apple

Fall Event: September 2023

Apple always holds an event in September where it almost always launches a new iPhone. (The only exception is 2020 due to Covid-related production issues.) Here are the past few Apple Fall Event dates:

2022: Wednesday, September 7
2021: Tuesday, September 14
2020: Tuesday, September 15
2019: Tuesday, September 10
2018: Wednesday, September 12
2017: Tuesday, September 12

While there are no specific rumors about the event yet, we’re expecting to see the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and possibly a new iPhone 15 Ultra to replace the iPhone 14 Pro Max. We’re also likely to see the launch of the Apple Watch 9. And, if Apple hasn’t yet unveiled its AR headset, the fall iPhone event is a strong contender for its debut.

Late fall Event: October/November 2023

Apple’s late fall event isn’t guaranteed to happen. In 2022, for example, there were rumors about an October event, but Apple opted to issue press releases for the new 10th-gen iPad and M2 iPad Pro. Over the past six years, Apple has held three events, so it’s a 50 percent chance of happening this year.

2022: No event

2021: Monday, October 18

2020: Tuesday, October 12

2019: No event

2018: Tuesday, October 30

2017: No event

Apple traditionally uses its late fall event to unveil new Macs and iPads. In 2023, that would likely mean the launch of the M3 chip, which could appear in the new 24-inch iMac, iPad Pro, and MacBook Air.

Spring Event: 2024

In 2022, Apple released the iPhone SE 2, iPad Air, and Mac Studio and Studio Display, in 2021, we got the iMac, AirTag, and Apple TV 4K. And in 2019, the event was devoted to Apple’s services: Apple TV+, Apple News+, and Apple Arcade.

Spring Event: April 2023

There was no spring event in 2023, but there could be in 2024. If there is the event will most likely take place on a Monday or Tuesday in early- to mid-April. Here’s when Apple has held its last few spring events:

2023: No event

2022: Tuesday, March 8

2021: Tuesday, April 20

2020: No event due to Covid

2019: Monday, March 25

2018: Tuesday, March 27

2017: No event

Officially Apple hasn’t told us what it will be announcing at WWDC 2023 on June 5, but there are clues if you know where to look. The latest and most blatant of these is the fact that a number of XR (or ‘extended reality’) publications have been invited to the keynote for the first time.

On Tuesday, the industry news site Road To VR revealed that it had been invited to attend Apple’s summer event in person, and that fellow XR site UploadVR had too. Neither site has gone to WWDC previously, and the former notes that “Apple has historically not invited XR media to its events, let alone commented in any way on its XR R&D.”

XR encompasses three categories of technology: virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality, which covers hybrid devices that deliver both the previous types. Apple’s rumored Reality Pro headset is expected to sit in the third category, with a Digital Crown-style dial to switch seamlessly between VR and AR.

Reality Pro has reportedly been in development hell for years, and multiple times it has been expected to launch imminently only to hit a delay at the last moment. Most recently, the headset was widely expected to be the central attraction at Apple’s spring 2023 event; the fact that it wasn’t ready in time may explain why the company decided not to have a spring event at all.

(Incidentally, if Apple’s design team had their way, the headset wouldn’t be launching before 2024 at the earliest. They are understood to have told Tim Cook that the technology wasn’t ready yet, but he overruled them.)

But now, surely, the time has come. The trademarks have been registered, the XR reporters are booking their flights, and the project’s key players are rehearsing their lines. This isn’t a drill. It’s actually happening, people.

Apple has sent out official invitations to select media to watch its prepared WWDC 2023 keynote video at the company’s Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California. The keynote is set to take place at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET on June 5th. Of course, the same video will also be streamed live at the same time for everyone else to watch online.

The WWDC keynote is the opening event of Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference. It typically includes a number of software announcements, such as new updates to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and more. This year, the headline rumored announcement is the unveiling of Apple’s augmented reality headset. This long-awaited device, which Apple has not officially acknowledged, marks the company’s first major foray into the world of mixed reality.

The AR headset is thought to run a new version of Apple’s mobile operating system, potentially known as xrOS. It could also carry the branding “Reality One.”

Here are some of the features that are rumored to be included in the AR headset:

A high-resolution display with a wide field of view
A powerful processor that can handle complex AR applications
A variety of sensors for tracking the user’s head, eyes, and hands
A comfortable design that can be worn for extended periods of time
The AR headset is expected to be released in 2023. It is unclear how much it will cost, but it is likely to be a premium product.

The launch of the AR headset would be a major event for Apple. It would mark the company’s entry into a new and growing market. It would also be a significant step forward in Apple’s efforts to create a more immersive and interactive computing experience.

Update 5/23/2023: Apple has officially announced the WWDC keynote on June 5 at 10 a.m. PT. The company also sent invites to analysts, media, and special guests to attend the keynote at Apple Park.

Apple invites developers to participate in a series of classes, workshops, and sessions to learn about the system-wide changes coming the major software platforms in the coming year so they can update their apps.

How to watch WWDC 2023

Apple will live stream the opening keynote for all on its website (check Apple’s events page) and elsewhere, such as on YouTube and on the Apple TV app. This means you’ll be able to watch the presentation on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and even PC.

Some lucky developers will be able to watch the event live in person, but there will be a lot of competition for those tickets which will be randomly selected from those to apply and aren’t transferable.

If you want to be in with a chance of attending you need to Request to attend on the Apple Developer website. The deadline to made a request to attend the event is April 4 at 9 a.m. PDT. It is open to the following:

Current Apple Developer Program members

Apple Entrepreneur Camp alumni

Swift Student Challenge winners (2020 to 2022) – 2023 challenge applicants are included in a separate random selection process for winners, in early May Apple begun alerting the lucky few of their status as winners.

The same set up will be used in 2023.

Even without a ticket, all registered Apple developers get online access to session videos, slides, and sample code throughout the week.

Apple will share additional conference information in advance of WWDC23 through the Apple Developer app.

However, it will be one of the most important product launches in years, as Apple looks beyond the iPhone into a whole new category of wearable device.

We don’t know exactly what the rest of the machine will bring, but we expect it to be very similar to the current Air, possibly with the addition of an M2 Pro chip.
