Apple’s Communication Safety feature for iPhone — designed to protect children from viewing nude images over iMessage — is being expanded to cover adult users in addition to video content and other communication methods. Announced during the WWDC event on Monday, the protections will arrive with iOS 17 later this year with all image and video processing happening right on the device itself to ensure everything is kept private, even from Apple.

The Communication Safety in Messages feature uses on-device machine learning to automatically blur nude images in iMessages before a child can view them. With iOS 17, the expanded feature will also protect children from viewing or sharing photos that contain nudity via AirDrop, new Contact Posters, FaceTime messages, and when browsing their image library using Photo Picker. Alongside still images, it can also scan video content for nudity. Apple hasn’t confirmed if this feature will also apply to live video content such as FaceTime video calls — we’ve reached out for clarification and will update this story should we hear back.

Image: Apple
The pop-up displayed for the upcoming Sensitive Content Warning feature is identical to that already used on Communication Safety for Messages.

Right now, the Communication Safety tool is an opt-in feature within Apple’s existing Family Sharing system. It can only be applied to iMessages until iOS 17 arrives sometime in the fall. When enabled, the feature currently detects if a child is sending or receiving images that could contain nudity, subsequently warning the child and blurring the photograph before it’s viewed on the minor’s device. The child is also presented with helpful resources and the option to message a trusted adult for additional support.

Adults will soon also be able to reap similar protections from unsolicited nudes. “Sensitive Content Warning” is a new feature coming to iOS 17 that will warn users of any age if an image or video they’re receiving contains nudity. The content will be flagged in a pop-up message that asks users if they wish to view it anyway, alongside some reassurance and helpful guidance on staying safe, such as “It’s not your fault, but naked photos and videos can be used to hurt you.”

We will update this story as the news breaks, please reload this page for the latest news.

— Here are the rumors —

Apple’s WWDC will kick off with a keynote on June 5 at which we expect the company to take the wraps off of macOS 14, the next major version of the Mac operating system.

In this article, we’ll track the latest news about macOS 14, the features we hope to see and the rumors, and when it is officially unveiled, it’ll be your place to learn about all of the new features and updates.

macOS 14: What will be the name of the next macOS release?

Every year since macOS 10.9 Mavericks, Apple has used California landmarks to identify each new version of macOS. Apple has trademarked numerous names over the years, as shared by Parker Ortolani of The Verge:

If macOS 14 is a so-called maintenance release–as is rumored–with few new features, it will likely be named after a location near Ventura. Based on the names above, Rincon and Skyline are the most likely names.

Another potential name is Malibu, suggested by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg and about 40m miles south of Ventura, but that name hasn’t been trademarked by Apple.

macOS 14 release date: When will macOS 14 arrive?

Apple’s usual venue for revealing the next major version of macOS is its Worldwide Developers Conference. WWDC 2023 starts at 10am (PDT) on June 5, and during the keynote, Apple will reveal the name and new features of macOS.

Apple usually releases a beta of the new macOS to developers at WWDC, and you have to be a registered developer to access it. A public beta is released about a month later, and in order to get that, you must join Apple’s Beta Program. Read about How to install macOS beta.

This is what the beta release timeline could look like:

June 5: macOS 14 is revealed and the developer beta is released.

July: Apple releases the first public beta.

June to September/October: This is the beta period. Apple will release several beta updates during this time.

September/October: macOS 14 is released to the general public.

The final version of macOS 14 will be released to the general public in the fall. In the recent past, the release has come several weeks after the new version of iOS ships. Here are the release dates for the previous five versions of macOS:

macOS 13 Ventura: October 24, 2022

macOS 12 Monterey: October 25, 2021

macOS 11 Big Sur: November 12, 2020

macOS 10.15 Catalina: October 7, 2019

macOS 10.14 Mojave: September 24, 2018

macOS 14 compatibility: Which Macs will be able to run macOS 14?

When Apple released macOS Ventura, the company cut numerous older Macs from the compatibility list, including:

2015 iMac

2016 MacBook

2015-2017 MacBook Air

2015-2016 MacBook Pro

2014 Mac mini

2013 Mac Pro

There haven’t been any rumors about Apple dropping support for any Macs this year like we have with the iPad, so it’s very possible that the compatibility list for macOS 14 is the same as Ventura. Here’s the possible compatibility list:

MacBook models from 2017 or later

MacBook Air models from 2018 or later

MacBook Pro models from 2017 or later

Mac mini models from 2018 or later

iMac models from 2017 or later

iMac Pro (all models)

Mac Pro models from 2019 or later

Mac Studio (all models)

There is always the possibility that a Mac may be compatible with macOS 14, but some of the new features won’t run on older Macs of the list. Some new features may also require Apple chips and not run on Intel-based Macs.

macOS 14: How to install the beta and official version

Apple changed the beta process in macOS 13.4, so the way to install the macOS 14 beta is different to what it was previously. Instead of downloading the Beta Access Utility for every device, you’ll only need to register your Apple ID for the beta program to install betas on every Apple device that is signed into that account.

Then when you go to Software Update, you’ll see a new tab for Beta Updates, which will list the version of the beta you’re running. If you want to install the beta, select macOS 14 Public Beta, and if you want to return to Ventura, select Off. To install the official version, you need to wait for Apple to start shipping it in the fall. Then, you’ll be able to use Software Update in System Settings, or you can download it from the App Store.

Just remember: betas are not as stable as the official version–features may be implemented and then withdrawn, or they may not work properly, UI can change, and third-party app compatibility isn’t guaranteed.

macOS 14: Rumored new features

Rumors about new features have been light—all we know so far is that macOS 14 is not expected to be a major release loaded with new features. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in April 2023 that it likely won’t be “groundbreaking or significant” but rather will continue the trend of adding iOS features. As he writes: “The dream scenario is that you own an Apple Watch, an iPhone, a MacBook, an iPad, an Apple headset, and all five of those devices are capable of doing all the same things just in different use cases and at different times of the day.”

It’s also been reported that Apple has shifted some macOS resources to xrOS as Apple prepares to launch its new AR headset at WWDC.

macOS 14: New features we want to see

Even if macOS 14 consists entirely of iOS features that make their way to the Mac, there are plenty we’d like to see.

Dynamic Island for the Mac

With the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple introduced the Dynamic Island, which uses the pill-shaped cutout for Face ID and the selfie camera as an extraordinary UI element. It’s an ingenious feature that needs to at least come to the MacBook Pro.

Dynamic Island would alleviate the clutter on the right side of the macOS interface, which houses notifications, reminders, and widgets. But it could also be a great way to monitor the progress of something an app is working on in the background, act as an indicator for battery life, or display what Apple Music is playing, as on the iPhone.

Besides, Apple’s 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro and the M2 MacBook Air already have display notches, so a trip to the Dynamic Island should be easy to book.

Apple could make a lot of money by offering cloud storage for Time Machine backups.

Foundry

Time Machine iCloud backups

This was on our wishlist for macOS 12 and macOS 13, and it’s going to stay on every wishlist until it happens. As I said before, I’ll say it again: Having an offsite backup is always a good idea, and Time Machine could be updated to do that along with the option for a local backup.

Since Apple doesn’t seem to be interested in adding this feature to macOS out of necessity, allow me to take a different angle: It’s good for Apple’s bottom line. Think about it, Apple. You could make precious Services money from Time Machine iCloud backups by selling iCloud+ storage. Apple already has a $9.99/£6.99 tier that offers 2TB of storage— and I could see a new $6.99/£3.99 for 1TB of Time Machine iCloud+ storage tier. That’s about $84/£48 per year, and say, 500,000 users sign up for that. That’s a lot of money you’re making each year and a lot of happy Mac customers. How can you pass that up, Apple?

Multi-item clipboard

One thing that we think could make a huge difference to the way we work is something that Windows users have enjoyed for years: the ability to copy and paste multiple items. Right now Mac users can copy and paste one thing at a time, but Windows users can have multiple items on their clipboard and can choose which one to paste. It’s such a simple thing and so useful, we really can’t understand why it’s not available on Macs unless you use a third-party tool, like Parallels Toolbox.

Fine-tune System Settings

In my macOS 13 wishlist, I wanted Apple to rename System Preferences to Settings to match iOS and iPadOS. My wish came true, but at a price: Apple took it a step further and redesigned the UI to be more like the iPhone. That caused consternation for the most hard-core Mac fans and confusion among even iPhone users–and sent a lot of Mac users to Google to find settings they thought were lost. There’s no going back now; System Settings and its UI are here to stay. But it could use some fine-tuning.

We’d love to see Apple separate the interface from iOS. The look is fine, but some settings don’t make sense tucked away behind General or Desktop & Dock. Top on the list: Time Machine (especially if Apple unlocks iCloud backups).

More Apple iOS apps

With macOS Ventura, Apple finally made Mac versions of the Clock and Weather apps that have been in iOS since forever. Why stop there? There are plenty of iOS apps that aren’t available on the Mac: Translate, Clips (which was on my macOS 13 wishlist), Health, Wallet (those two were on my macOS 12 wishlist), Support…maybe not Compass, Measure, and Magnifier. And hey, while they’re at it, revive Warren Buffet’s Paper Wizard and bring it to the Mac!

A version of macOS for iPad

Apple’s always said it won’t happen, but there was a rumor (back in October 2022) that macOS 14 could be destined for the M2 iPad Pro.

A simplified version should be planned for the M2. pic.twitter.com/f4RrainlZ1

— Majin Bu (@MajinBuOfficial) October 20, 2022

The rumor came via Majin Bu Twitter, who said that Apple is working on a “smaller version of macOS” that will run “exclusively” on the M2 iPad Pro. Majin Bu doesm’t have a great track record though, and there is little evidence that Apple is working to merge the iPad and Mac lines, so it may never happen. But with Final Cut and Logic Pro now available on the iPad Pro we should never say never.

Bu claims that the “simplified” version of macOS 14 will have “a 25% larger macOS UI” that’s presumably optimized for touch. Apple’s already optimised Final Cut and Logic Pro for touch–if it did the same for macOS could we even see a touch-screen Mac? Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has suggested such a Mac could be in Apple’s sights, despite Apple’s insistence that it won’t go down that path.

Sync the Clock app across all devices

As I just said, with macOS Ventura, Apple finally brought over Mac versions of the Clock and Weather apps that have been in iOS and iPadOS. Yay! However, the Weather app syncs between devices, and the Clock app doesn’t. That means that alarms that you set on one device aren’t available on others. Boo!

It’s easy enough to set an alarm, but it would be way easier if those alarms synced across devices. While we’re at it, why not sync world clock entries? Or even timers–I create a lot of timers and would like to be able to control them from multiple devices. Oh, and since everyone might not want their iPhone timers on their Mac, then give us the option to turn syncing off.

Stability and optimization

I can keep going with the wishes–a lot of what I wanted in my macOS 12 and macOS 13 wishlist have yet to become reality, and I’d still like to see them happen. But reports have said that macOS 14 won’t have many major changes, since the company is supposedly focusing on the AR/VR headset and its operating system, rumored to be called xrOS. Development for macOS 14, iOS 17, and iPadOS 17 is seemingly a lower priority until that device is unveiled.

Unified version numbers

Speaking of which, wouldn’t it be easier to read if they had the same version number? We’d love to see Apple jump from macOS 14 to a number more akin to iOS 17. Is it time for macOS 2024, iOS 2024 and iPadOS 2024?

You’re used to battery cases that show a green or red status light when they’re charging an iPhone. It would be good if we didn’t need these extra batteries, but it would also be handy if we got a bit more information from them, and that’s now what could happen.

WWDC 2023 starts on June 5, and during the keynote, Apple will reveal the name and new features of macOS.

Apple is changing the beta process in macOS 13.4, so by the time the macOS 14 beta arrives, the method will be different.

The Clock app arrived with macOS Ventura, but it doesn’t sync with the Clock app on iPhones and iPads.

Foundry

Following yesterday's news that an apparent Apple shell company is seeking to trademark the term "xrProOS" ahead of a headset unveiling at WWDC two weeks from today, additional trademark activity seemingly linked to Apple has surfaced around a couple of other terms.

Apple headset concept mockup by designer Marcus Kane

The first is "realityproOS," which was filed yesterday in New Zealand and noticed by patent attorney Narly Kalupahana. The filing was made by the same Immersive Health Solutions LLC company that filed to protect terms like "Reality One" and "Reality Pro" last year. Those terms have been rumored to be potential names of Apple's upcoming headset devices.

The new "realityproOS" filing cites a May 1 filing in Jamaica for establishing a priority date, a tactic commonly used by Apple to hide early trademark protection efforts as the trademark activity in the country is not currently available online.

The second trademark filing that has seen activity in recent days is "realOS," a term which was broadly registered in Europe last year by an apparent Apple shell company named Realityo Systems LLC to cover various aspects of computers and operating systems. Realityo Systems also gained some notice last year after it was discovered the company had submitted a filing for "realityOS" in late 2021.

In the past few weeks, Realityo Systems has submitted additional filings in other countries for the "realOS" term with a much narrower description of "computer operating systems, computer operating systems for integrated circuits."

A trademark for "realOS" in the United States dating back to 2006 was also previously owned by Fujitsu, but changed hands several times before being acquired by Realityo Systems in November 2022.

With a number of operating system-related trademarks seemingly linked to Apple having seen activity in recent days, including "xrOS," "xrProOS," "realityproOS", and "realOS," it's unlikely that Apple plans to use all of them as public-facing names. It is interesting, however, to see Apple seeking to protect various options as it prepares to show its long-rumored headset to the world.
Related Roundup: AR/VR Headset

Tag: Trademark

Related Forum: Apple Glasses, AR and VR

This article, "More Recent Apple Trademark Activity: 'realityproOS' and 'realOS'" first appeared on MacRumors.com

Discuss this article in our forums
<br

This week saw a good mix of Apple news and rumors including the release of iOS 16.5 and related software updates, as well as the Beats Studio Buds + earphones and an early announcement of upcoming accessibility features from Apple.

On the rumor front, we heard a bit more about what we should expect to see with the iPhone 15 lineup and the M3 family of Mac and iPad chips coming later this year, but the biggest focus of attention in the lead-up to WWDC in a few weeks is the Apple headset, so read on for all the details on these stories and more!

Apple Releases iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 With Sports Tab in Apple News, Bug Fixes and More

After almost two months of beta testing, Apple this week released iOS 16.5 to the public, bringing some sports-related enhancements to Apple News, a new Pride Celebration wallpaper, and several bug fixes.

It’s a relatively minor update as iOS 16 work winds down ahead of the iOS 17 introduction at WWDC next month, but we’ll be seeing at least one more iOS 16 update to tide us over to the public release of iOS 17 in September as Apple has seeded initial betas of iOS 16.6 and related updates for testing.

Alongside iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5, we also saw the releases of macOS Ventura 13.4, watchOS 9.5, tvOS 16.5 with multiview for MLB and MLS, and HomePod software version 16.5.

Apple Headset’s Capabilities Said to ‘Far Exceed’ Those of Rival Devices

With an introduction at WWDC coming up in just a few weeks, rumors about Apple’s AR/VR headset are flying about, with a recent report from The Wall Street Journal claiming its capabilities will “far exceed” those of rival devices.

Apple headset mockup by designer Ian Zelbo

Other reports are more cautious, however, with Bloomberg reporting that key Apple executives including Tim Cook and Craig Federighi have largely kept their distance from the product during its development, calling into question whether Apple itself is fully behind it.

Beats Studio Buds + Deliver Improved Performance and a Transparent Design Option for $169.99

In one of the poorest-kept secrets that has seen multiple leaks over the past couple of months, Apple’s Beats brand this week introduced the Beats Studio Buds + earphones.

The new $170 earphones offer improved performance, better battery life, and an eye-catching new Transparent color option compared to their predecessors. They’re available now in the U.S., Canada, and China, with launches in other countries to follow in the coming months.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus Rumored to Feature 48-Megapixel Camera Like Pro Models

While the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max received an upgraded 48-megapixel Main camera last year, the lower-cost iPhone 14 and 14 Plus did not get the same upgrade. It looks like those cheaper options may catch up this year, however, as a new report claims the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will get that 48-megapixel camera.

As for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, those devices may be seeing a rearranged rear camera layout to accommodate the higher-zoom periscope camera that will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple Testing ‘M3 Pro’ Chip for MacBook Pro With 12-Core CPU and 18-Core GPU

Apple’s next-generation M3 chips for the Mac and iPad aren’t coming until later this year, but Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman has shared some details on what to expect for the “M3 Pro” chip that will likely make its way into the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro and other devices.

According to Gurman, the M3 Pro will feature a 12-core CPU, an 18-core GPU, and up to 36 GB of memory. That’s up from a 10-core CPU, 16-core CPU, and up to 32 GB of memory on the current M2 Pro chip.

Apple Previews iOS 17 Accessibility Features Ahead of WWDC

Apple this week previewed a wide range of new accessibility features for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac that are set to arrive later this year, presumably as part of iOS 17 and macOS 14.

New features include Assistive Access to distill iPhone and iPad apps to their core features for the ultimate in interface simplicity, Point and Speak in the Magnifier app to automatically read text labels from the real-world aloud as the user points to them, Personal Voice to allow those at risk of losing their ability to speak to create a digital voice that sounds like them, and much more.

The same "Deep Dive LLC" shell company that filed for an "xrOS" trademark in New Zealand last week also filed for a "Deep Screen" trademark in the U.S. and over two dozen other countries around the world in 2017 and 2018, according to online records. The additional filing was brought to our attention by Marcus Schappi.

Apple headset mockup by designer Ian Zelbo

Apple is likely behind the "Deep Screen" trademark filing given Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported that "xrOS" will be the name of the operating system for Apple's long-rumored AR/VR headset, which the company is expected to unveil during WWDC next month. Apple has routinely used shell companies registered with the Delaware Corporation Trust Center to secretly apply for trademarks related to future products.

It's unclear if Apple still plans to use "Deep Screen" for its headset, as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office marked the application as abandoned in July 2022 after the shell company failed to file a statement explaining how the trademark would be used within the required timeframe. The shell company had filed for and received a maximum of five six-month extensions on the deadline to submit the statement and never ended up doing so. The application is still registered or pending in some other countries, such as Canada and New Zealand.

On a speculative basis, the "Deep Screen" name could be Apple's branding for the screen inside its headset, with "deep" potentially referring to an immersive virtual reality and augmented reality experience. However, given the age of the trademark application and its abandoned status in the U.S., it's unclear if the name will still be used.

Last year, Gurman reported that another shell company named "Immersive Health Solutions LLC" applied for "Reality Pro" and "Reality One" trademarks in over two dozen countries. Apple is likely behind these applications as well, and perhaps one of them will be the name of Apple's headset. WWDC begins with Apple's keynote on June 5, so we're likely just under three weeks away from the headset being unveiled.
Related Roundup: AR/VR Headset

Related Forum: Apple Glasses, AR and VR

This article, "Apple Likely Filed for Headset-Related 'Deep Screen' Trademark in 2017" first appeared on MacRumors.com

Discuss this article in our forums
<br

The additional filing was brought to our attention by Marcus Schappi.

Apple headset mockup by designer Ian Zelbo

Apple is likely behind the “Deep Screen” trademark filing given Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman has reported that “xrOS” will be the name of the operating system for Apple’s long-rumored AR/VR headset, which the company is expected to unveil during WWDC next month. Apple has routinely used shell companies registered with the Delaware Corporation Trust Center to secretly apply for trademarks related to future products.

It’s unclear if Apple still plans to use “Deep Screen” for its headset, as the U.S.

On a speculative basis, the “Deep Screen” name could be Apple’s branding for the screen inside its headset, with “deep” potentially referring to an immersive virtual reality and augmented reality experience. However, given the age of the trademark application and its abandoned status in the U.S., it’s unclear if the name will still be used.

Last year, Gurman reported that another shell company named “Immersive Health Solutions LLC” applied for “Reality Pro” and “Reality One” trademarks in over two dozen countries. Apple is likely behind these applications as well, and perhaps one of them will be the name of Apple’s headset. WWDC begins with Apple’s keynote on June 5, so we’re likely just under three weeks away from the headset being unveiled.

The Wall Street Journal on Friday outlined what to expect from Apple's long-rumored AR/VR headset project, corroborating several details previously reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and The Information's Wayne Ma.

Apple headset mockup by designer Ian Zelbo

The report indicates that Apple plans to unveil the headset at WWDC in June, and says many sessions at the conference will be related to developing software for the headset. However, the news outlet claims that mass production of the headset isn't expected to begin until September due to manufacturing delays. Apple is said to be "anticipating some production issues" with the headset, but there are no specific details.

The headset is expected to have an internal screen for virtual reality, while outward-facing cameras would allow users to view the real world inside the headset with augmented reality overlays. This combination is known as "mixed reality."

Other details corroborated by the report include the headset being "experimental" and "unconventional" relative to most other Apple products, costing around $3,000, and having a waist-mounted external battery pack. FaceTime, Apple Fitness+, and gaming could be three major use cases for the headset, the report adds.

While it remains to be seen what the headset's biggest selling point will be, its capabilities "far exceed those of competitors," according to some sources cited in the report. Apple's headset is said to offer "greater levels of performance and immersion" than some competing devices, like Facebook parent company Meta's Quest Pro headset.
