Expectations for initial sales of the Apple Vision Pro are low, with claims Apple has cut down its initial orders for the headset due to difficulties in producing it, alongside general complaints about cost. This may not necessarily be a big issue for Apple, as a report insists that it would take a long time for the headset arm to majorly impact Apple’s business anyway.

Apple’s Vision Pro headset doesn’t have a firm release date, but if you plan on buying one you can expect an even longer wait. According to a new report, Apple has severely cut back on orders for the new wearable device due to “the complexity of the headset design and difficulties in production.”

The Financial Times report claims that Apple’s manufacturer is “preparing to make fewer than 400,000 units in 2024,” much lower than the previously rumored one million units. Additionally, the publication claims that two suppliers of “certain components for the Vision Pro” are only supplying enough for 130,000 to 150,000 units in the first year. The “manufacturing of the sleek screens for the device” is among the major hurdles Apple is working to overcome.

In addition to the low production numbers, Apple is reportedly eyeing an exclusive retail launch for the Vision Pro. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple will target “major areas such as New York and Los Angeles” at launch and “will ask in-store buyers to make an appointment to purchase the Vision Pro,” similar to how the Apple Watch launched.

That doesn’t mean you can’t buy one online. Gurman notes that Apple is planning to launch an iPhone app to “scan a person’s head” and determine the proper light seal. Additionally, buyers will need to “upload their prescription data” for glasses before purchasing. Apple hasn’t divulged how much prescription lenses will cost for Vision Pro.

The report also claims that Apple Vision Pro will be slow to reach third-party retailers due to “sorting out tricky supply chain logistics, training salespeople how to set up the device and teaching customers how to use it.”

Apple is planning to sell its $3,499 Vision Pro headset on an appointment-only basis at launch, according to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. According to Gurman, Apple will create designated sections where customers can try on the headset in its stores, with the first ones appearing at stores in major areas like New York and Los Angeles.

Apple will reportedly ask in-store buyers to schedule an appointment to purchase the Vision Pro, similar to the rollout of the first Apple Watch in 2015. During the appointment, Gurman says Apple will ensure that the Vision Pro fits the wearer and also outfit the device with prescription lens inserts if needed. Gurman says Apple Stores will need to keep “hundreds or thousands of lenses” in stock as a result.

The other element he mentions is that Apple’s working on both an iPhone app and a physical machine that scans a person’s head to figure out if it has the right light seal — a component that prevents light from interfering with a wearer’s field of view. When the company opens online orders in the US in early 2024, it will reportedly have customers upload their lens prescription and their head scan data.

The demos at the last WWDC didn’t include that step, with only a vision test and ear scanning for spatial audio.

The headset, which is set to launch in the US early next year, won’t be available in other countries until late 2024, Gurman says. After it releases the Vision Pro in the US, Apple will reportedly bring the headset to the UK and Canada afterward, with other countries in Asia and Europe to follow. The company doesn’t plan on bringing the device to third-party retailers until at least 2025, Gurman notes.

Apple may also be working on some additional accessories for the Vision Pro. According to Gurman, it’s exploring a second strap that goes across the wearer’s head to help people with “smaller body sizes and heads” wear the headset for long periods of time. It is also looking into creating a shoulder pouch for the Vision Pro headset’s external battery pack, as some people who wear certain kinds of cultural apparel may not have pockets.

Apple has been forced to make “drastic” cuts to production forecasts for its Apple Vision Pro spatial computer, Financial Times reports. The complexity of the headset design and difficulties in production are reportedly behind the scaling back of targets.

[P]lans for a more affordable version of the device have had to be pushed back, according to multiple people with direct knowledge of the manufacturing process.

Two people close to Apple and Luxshare, the Chinese contract manufacturer that will initially assemble the device, said it was preparing to make fewer than 400,000 units in 2024. Multiple industry sources said Luxshare was currently Apple’s only assembler of the device. Separately, two China-based sole suppliers of certain components for the Vision Pro said Apple was only asking them for enough for 130,000 to 150,000 units in the first year.

Both projections imply a significant cut to production from an earlier, internal sales target of 1mn units in the first 12 months. The forecasts for low volumes reflect Apple’s lack of confidence in being able to scale production, according to analysts and industry experts…

“A lot of this is normal growing pains,” said Jay Goldberg, founder of tech consultancy D/D Advisors. “This is the most complex consumer device anyone has ever made.”

In May, I published an in-depth exposé detailing the downfall of Brydge, the once-thriving startup making popular keyboard accessories for iPad users. At the time, Brydge told me that an acquisition of the company was in the works involving a “third party via a foreclosure process initiated by its senior lender.”

That acquisition has now been revealed, with a company called Uinta Products announcing that it has acquired Brydge’s assets with support from investment firm Claret Capital.

Astropad, known for its Astropad Studio software and Luna Display dongle for connecting an iPad to a Mac, today announced the general availability of its new Darkboard drawing surface designed to be used with the ‌iPad‌.

Darkboard is aimed at offering an ergonomic way to sketch and draw no matter where you are. The Darkboard is made from a rigid foam material that weighs in at 1.4 pounds, with the foam design providing cushioning and support for the arm and wrist.

According to Astropad, the Darkboard is ideal for using on the couch, in bed, and other situations where ideal ergonomics are unavailable. When you do have a flat surface to work on, there is a foldable stand that works as an easel or in a full vertical orientation.

A polycarbonate frame holds the ‌iPad‌ in place at any angle, so the Darkboard can be used in multiple orientations. There is 1mm of space between the ‌iPad‌’s display and the edge of the foam body to keep the ‌iPad‌ safe in case the Darkboard is dropped.

Astropad included a cutout for the camera, charging port access, and a pocket to hold the Apple Pencil. The Darkboard is 18 inches long, 14 inches wide, and an inch thick, and for transportation, there are grooved handles.

There are two available sizes, one that fits the third-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro or newer and one that fits the 11-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ and iPad Air models.

Darkboard launched on Kickstarter in September 2022 and orders started arriving to customers in March, but it is now available for general purchase. Darkboard can be purchased from the Astropad website for $120.
