In the realm of technology and innovation, few companies have left as indelible a mark as Apple Inc. Since its founding in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, Apple has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible, revolutionizing industries and shaping the way we live, work, and communicate. This article delves into the multifaceted impact Apple has had on society, exploring its contributions to the technology landscape and beyond.

Revolutionizing Personal Computing

Macintosh: Pioneering User-Friendly Design

One of Apple’s earliest and most significant contributions to society was the introduction of the Macintosh in 1984. Featuring a graphical user interface and a mouse, the Macintosh made personal computing more accessible to the average user. This marked the beginning of Apple’s commitment to user-friendly design, a principle that continues to define the company’s products.

MacBook and iMac: Setting Design Standards

Apple’s emphasis on design excellence reached new heights with the introduction of the MacBook and iMac. These devices not only set industry standards for aesthetics but also showcased Apple’s commitment to powerful, intuitive computing. The sleek aluminum unibody of the MacBook and the minimalist design of the iMac became iconic representations of Apple’s dedication to form and function.

Mobile Revolution with iPhone

The Birth of the iPhone

In 2007, Apple unveiled the iPhone, a device that would redefine the smartphone industry. With its revolutionary touch interface, App Store ecosystem, and seamless integration of hardware and software, the iPhone became a cultural phenomenon. It not only transformed the way we communicate but also sparked the era of mobile computing.

iOS Ecosystem: Changing How We Live

The iOS ecosystem, powered by devices like the iPhone and iPad, has permeated every aspect of modern life. From productivity apps to entertainment, healthcare to education, Apple’s ecosystem has become an integral part of daily routines. The App Store, with its vast array of applications, has empowered developers and entrepreneurs, contributing to the growth of a global app economy.

Cultural Impact through Media and Entertainment

iTunes and iPod: Revolutionizing Music Consumption

Apple’s foray into digital music with iTunes and the iPod forever changed how we consume and access music. The ability to purchase individual songs rather than entire albums, coupled with the portability of the iPod, revolutionized the music industry. Apple’s impact on the music landscape extended to its support for artists through platforms like Apple Music.

Apple TV and Original Content

Apple’s influence expanded to the realm of television with Apple TV. The company’s investment in original content production and the launch of Apple TV+ marked a significant move into the competitive streaming market. By creating and curating high-quality content, Apple further solidified its presence in the entertainment industry.

Innovation in Wearables and Health Tech

Apple Watch: Merging Fashion and Technology

The Apple Watch, introduced in 2015, exemplifies Apple’s ability to merge fashion and technology seamlessly. Beyond its timekeeping functionality, the Apple Watch serves as a health and fitness companion, monitoring vital signs and providing a platform for various health-related applications. The device has played a pivotal role in popularizing wearable technology.

HealthKit and ResearchKit: Advancing Healthcare

Apple’s commitment to health technology extends beyond wearables. With HealthKit and ResearchKit, Apple has empowered developers and researchers to create apps that contribute to medical research and individual health management. The company’s foray into healthcare showcases its ambition to impact society positively.

Environmental Initiatives and Corporate Responsibility

Environmental Leadership

In recent years, Apple has taken significant steps to address environmental concerns. The company has committed to using 100% renewable energy in its operations and has focused on recycling and responsible sourcing of materials. Apple’s efforts in environmental sustainability set an example for the tech industry.

Corporate Responsibility and Social Initiatives

Apple’s impact on society also includes its commitment to corporate responsibility and social initiatives. The company has advocated for diversity and inclusion, championing causes related to education, accessibility, and social justice. Apple’s influence extends beyond technology, reaching into the realm of societal responsibility.

Conclusion

Apple’s impact on society is multifaceted, reaching far beyond the realms of technology and business. Through innovative products, cultural contributions, and a commitment to social responsibility, Apple has shaped the way we live, work, and connect with each other. As the company continues to evolve and push boundaries, its influence on society is likely to persist, leaving an enduring legacy in the annals of technological history.

In the ever-evolving landscape of technological innovation and corporate success stories, few narratives are as captivating and enduring as that

In the ever-evolving landscape of technological innovation and corporate success stories, few narratives are as captivating and enduring as that of Apple Inc. What began as a humble venture in a Silicon Valley garage in 1976, with three visionaries – Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne – tinkering away on the creation of the Apple I computer kit, has since blossomed into a global phenomenon.

Apple’s journey through the corridors of time is a remarkable testament to the power of innovation, design excellence, and unwavering commitment to the user experience.

The iconic trajectory of Apple’s history can be viewed as a series of distinct epochs, each marked by groundbreaking products that not only redefined industries but also had a profound impact on the way humanity interacts with technology. From the revolutionary Apple II, which ushered in the era of personal computing with vibrant color graphics, to the game-changing Macintosh, which introduced the world to the concept of a graphical user interface, Apple consistently pushed the boundaries of what was possible in the digital realm.

The company’s pivotal role in the rise of desktop publishing during the 1980s further cemented its status as an industry trailblazer, empowering creative minds and businesses alike to craft visually stunning content. However, like any storied journey, Apple faced its share of challenges, grappling with the tumultuous late 1980s and early 1990s, when it contended with fierce competition from IBM-compatible PCs and the emergence of Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

Yet, the narrative of Apple is not one of mere survival but of triumphant resurgence. In 1997, a pivotal moment arrived with the return of its co-founder, Steve Jobs, as CEO. His visionary leadership brought about a renaissance within the company, centered on a resolute dedication to design, innovation, and an unyielding commitment to delivering unparalleled customer experiences.

The dawn of the 21st century bore witness to the arrival of products that would not only disrupt industries but shape the very fabric of modern living. The iPod, introduced in 2001, revolutionized music consumption, paving the way for a digital music revolution. Then came the iPhone in 2007, a game-changing smartphone that seamlessly integrated communication, entertainment, and productivity into a single device, redefining our relationship with mobile technology.

A mere three years later, in 2010, Apple unveiled the iPad, unleashing a tablet revolution that would reshape computing paradigms, blurring the lines between laptops and mobile devices. These triumphs, alongside subsequent innovations like the Apple Watch and AirPods, have propelled Apple to its current status as one of the world’s most valuable companies, with a staggering market capitalization exceeding $2 trillion.

Today, as we embark on a journey through Apple’s storied history, we shall delve into the moments of triumph, the trials overcome, and the innovations that have not only transformed an iconic brand but also the very essence of modern technology. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, Apple continues to shape the world of tomorrow, proving that innovation, design, and customer-centricity remain at the heart of its enduring success.

Apple on Thursday released the official trailer for “The Beanie Bubble,” starring Elizabeth Banks and Zach Galifianakis.

Why did the world suddenly treat stuffed animals like gold? Ty Warner was a frustrated toy salesman until his collaboration with three women grew his masterstroke of an idea into the biggest toy craze in history. “The Beanie Bubble” is an inventive story about what and who we value, and the unsung heroes whose names didn’t appear on the heart-shaped tag.

“The Beanie Bubble” is inspired by the story behind one of the biggest speculative crazes that blazed through American culture in the ’90s. It pulls back the curtain on the absurdities and injustices of the American Dream — particularly the female relationship to it. It’s a celebration of the women who helped power Ty Warner’s success, whose strengths and good instincts shaped and amplified the phenomenon, but whose names are not on the Beanie Babies’ heart-shaped tags.

Produced by Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Karen Lunder, president of Imagine Features, “The Beanie Bubble” marks the first film order to hail from an exclusive first-look deal between Apple and Imagine Entertainment for scripted films. The film is written by Gore, who also co-directs alongside Kulash. The married directing duo developed the story together, and Gore wrote the screenplay, which is based on the book “The Great Beanie Baby Bubble: Mass Delusion and the Dark Side of Cute.” In addition to starring, Galifianakis serves as executive producer.

“The Beanie Bubble” joins an expanding lineup of Apple Original Films including the recently premiered “Swan Song,” starring and produced by Mahershala Ali; Joel Coen’s upcoming acclaimed film “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand; as well as highly anticipated upcoming films “Emancipation,” a new film from director Antoine Fuqua, and starring and produced by Academy Award nominee Will Smith; “Killers of the Flower Moon,” directed by Martin Scorsese, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro; and “Spirited,” a musical rendition of Charles Dickens’ classic holiday story starring Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds and Octavia Spencer.

In addition to a first-look deal with Imagine Entertainment for feature films, Apple is also partnered with Imagine Documentaries on a first-look deal for unscripted projects, including the previously announced “Black & Blues: The Colorful Ballad of Louis Armstrong,” as well as upcoming docuseries “The Supermodels.” The projects will premiere alongside the critically acclaimed Apple/Imagine documentary “Dads,” from director Bryce Dallas Howard, as well as the Peanuts 70th anniversary documentary, “Who Are You Charlie Brown?,” from Imagine Documentaries and WildBrain.

“The Beanie Bubble” will premiere on July 28, 2023 only on Apple TV+.

The rumored debut of a “Reality Pro” headset is right around the corner, but Tim Cook has been singing the praises of AR for years.

With Tim Cook as CEO, Apple has become the most valuable company in the world, having passed a $3 trillion market cap in the past and sitting at around $2.6 trillion as of this writing. For all of his nearly 12 years as the head of the company, though, there hasn’t been one single product tied to him the way the iPhone, iPad, and revitalized Mac computers are so inextricably linked to Steve Jobs.

But while Cook’s impact on the company has largely been in his operational mastery and the massive pay-off of his strategy in pivoting to services, he’s consistently found time to talk about one platform as potentially game-changing without fully committing to the tech through actual new product releases: augmented reality.

That was despite Cook’s denigrations of early AR headgear like Google Glass. This would become a running theme: AR good, VR not so good. In September 2021, he went as far as to call himself “AR fan number one.” Although he once called virtual reality “really cool,” he’s also said it’s “for set periods, but not a way to communicate well” while taking swipes at the metaverse in an interview last year.

Now, on the eve of a presumed announcement of Apple’s new “Reality Pro” mixed reality headset, it’s much easier to see where it was all going. The company has been slowly integrating the technology that will presumably breathe life into the new device for years, adding AR features to its iPhone and iPads that, while none of it has ever made more than a momentary splash, may have been crucial development experience for Apple.

One example is the 2019 Minecraft Earth demo at WWDC that showed a hint of Apple’s capabilities without tipping its hand about any new hardware. As you’ll see in his various comments from 2016 onward, while Cook mentions gaming, it sounds like his vision for the Reality Pro is much broader, viewing it as a collaborative technology consistent with Apple’s overall philosophy about creating tech that integrates with your life.

Here’s a brief history of all the times Tim Cook said he was convinced AR was the future.

July 2016: Cook says in a quarterly earnings call that “AR can be really great.”

We have been and continue to invest a lot in this. We are high on AR for the long run, we think there’s great things for customers and a great commercial opportunity. The number one thing is to make sure our products work well with other developers’ kind of products like Pokémon, that’s why you see so many iPhones in the wild chasing pokemons.

(Cook pronounces it “pokey-mans.”)

September 2016: Cook tells Good Morning America in an interview that he believes AR is a bigger deal than VR.

There’s virtual reality and there’s augmented reality — both of these are incredibly interesting. But my own view is that augmented reality is the larger of the two, probably by far.

[AR] gives the capability for both of us to sit and be very present, talking to each other, but also have other things — visually — for both of us to see. Maybe it’s something we’re talking about, maybe it’s someone else here who’s not here present but who can be made to appear to be present.

There’s a lot of really cool things there.

August 2016: Cook makes a brief mention of AR in a Washington Post profile:

I think AR [augmented reality] is extremely interesting and sort of a core technology. So, yes, it’s something we’re doing a lot of things on behind that curtain that we talked about.

October 2016: In an appearance at Utah Tech Tour, Cook goes into detail about how crucial AR may become and why he views it as superior to VR — while stressing that AR presents significant technology challenges before it can be adopted for mass consumerism.

In terms of it becoming a mass adoption [phenomenon], so that, say, everyone in here would have an AR experience, the reality to do that, it has to be something that everyone in here views to be an “acceptable thing.”

And nobody in here, few people in here, think it’s acceptable to be tethered to a computer walking in here and sitting down, few people are going to view that it’s acceptable to be enclosed in something, because we’re all social people at heart. Even introverts are social people, we like people and we want to interact. It has to be that it’s likely that AR, of the two, is the one the largest number of people will engage with.

I do think that a significant portion of the population of developed countries, and eventually all countries, will have AR experiences every day, almost like eating three meals a day, it will become that much a part of you, a lot of us live on our smartphones, the iPhone, I hope, is very important for everyone, so AR will become really big. VR I think is not going to be that big, compared to AR. I’m not saying it’s not important, it is important.

I’m excited about VR from an education point of view, I think it can be really big for education, I think it can be very big for games. But I can’t imagine everyone in here getting in an enclosed VR experience while you’re sitting in here with me. But I could imagine everyone in here in an AR experience right now, if the technology was there, which it’s not today. How long will it take?

AR is going to take a while, because there are some really hard technology challenges there. But it will happen, it will happen in a big way, and we will wonder when it does, how we ever lived without it. Like we wonder how we lived without our phone today.

And so you want the technology to encourage that.”

Augmented reality will take some time to get right, but I do think that it’s profound. We might … have a more productive conversation, if both of us have an AR experience standing here, right? And so I think that things like these are better when they’re incorporated without becoming a barrier to our talking. … You want the technology to amplify it, not to be a barrier.

February 2017: Cook expands his thoughts on AR’s potential, adding a new comparison: AR is a big idea, like the smartphone.

I’m excited about augmented reality because unlike virtual reality which closes the world out, AR allows individuals to be present in the world but hopefully allows an improvement on what’s happening presently. Most people don’t want to lock themselves out from the world for a long period of time and today you can’t do that because you get sick from it. With AR you can, not be engrossed in something, but have it be a part of your world, of your conversation. That has resonance.

I regard it as a big idea like the smartphone. The smartphone is for everyone, we don’t have to think the iPhone is about a certain demographic, or country or vertical market: it’s for everyone. I think AR is that big, it’s huge. I get excited because of the things that could be done that could improve a lot of lives. And be entertaining. I view AR like I view the silicon here in my iPhone, it’s not a product per se, it’s a core technology. But there are things to discover before that technology is good enough for the mainstream. I do think there can be a lot of things that really help people out in daily life, real-life things, that’s why I get so excited about it.

I think it is profound. I am so excited about it, I just want to yell out and scream. The first step in making it a mainstream kind of experience is to put it in the operating system. We’re building it into iOS 11, opening it to developers—and unleashing the creativity of millions of people. Even we can’t predict what’s going to come out.

There’s some things that you can already get a vision of. We’ve talked to IKEA, and they have 3D images of their furniture line. You’re talking about changing the whole experience of how you shop for, in this case, furniture and other objects that you can place around the home. You can take that idea and begin to think this is something that stretches from enterprise to consumer. There’s not a lot of things that do that.

You’ll see things happening in enterprises where AR is fundamental to what they’re doing. You’re going to see some consumer things that are unbelievably cool. Can we do everything we want to do now? No. The technology’s not complete yet. But that’s the beauty to a certain degree. This has a runway. And it’s an incredible runway. It’s time to put the seat belt on and go. When people begin to see what’s possible, it’s going to get them very excited—like we are, like we’ve been.

I’m incredibly excited by AR because I can see uses for it everywhere. I can see uses for it in education, in consumers, in entertainment, in sports. I can see it in every business that I know anything about.

I also like the fact that it doesn’t isolate. I don’t like our products being used a lot. I like our products amplifying thoughts and I think AR can help amplify the human connection. I’ve never been a fan of VR like that because I think it does the opposite. There are clearly some cool niche things for VR but it’s not profound in my view. AR is profound.

If you think about a runway show in the fashion world, that’s a great application of AR because some of these, you want to see the dress all the way around, you do not want to just see the front.

There already are over a thousand apps with powerful AR features in our App Store today with developers creating amazing new experiences in virtually every category of app aimed at consumers, students and business users alike.

Put simply, we believe AR is going to change the way we use technology forever. We’re already seeing things that will transform the way you work, play, connect and learn. For example, there are AR apps that you interact with virtual models of everything you can imagine from the human body to the solar system. And of course you experience them like you’re really there.

Instantly education becomes much more powerful when every subject comes to life in 3D. And imagine shopping when you can place an object in your living room before you make a purchase – or attending live sporting events when you can see the stats on the field. AR is going to change everything.

I can tell you the technology itself doesn’t exist to do that in a quality way. The display technology required, as well as putting enough stuff around your face — there’s huge challenges with that. The field of view, the quality of the display itself, it’s not there yet.

We don’t give a rat’s about being first, we want to be the best, and give people a great experience. But now anything you would see on the market any time soon would not be something any of us would be satisfied with. Nor do I think the vast majority of people would be satisfied.

Augmented reality is going to revolutionize many of the experiences we have with mobile devices, and with ARKit, we’re giving developers the most advanced tools on the market to create apps for the most advanced operating system running on the most advanced hardware.

Yesterday, I visited a development company called War Ducks … in Dublin – 15 people and they’re staffing up and using AR for games. You can imagine, for games it’s incredible but even for our discussion here. You and I might be talking about an article and using AR we can pull it up, and can both be looking at the same thing at the same time.

I think it’s something that doesn’t isolate people. We can use it to enhance our discussion, not substitute it for human connection, which I’ve always deeply worried about in some of the other technologies.

April 2021: During an interview with journalist Kara Swisher Cook agreed with her that augmented reality is “a critically important part of Apple’s future.” He imagines AR being used in health, education, retail, and gaming.

I’m already seeing AR take off in some of these areas with use of the phone. And I think the promise is even greater in the future.

September 2021: In an interview with tech YouTuber iJustine, Cook said that he was AR’s number one fan and reiterated his hopes for it as a collaboration tool.

I am so excited about AR. I think AR is one of these very few profound technologies that we will look back on one day and went, how did we live our lives without it? And so right now you can experience it in thousands of ways using your iPad or your iPhone, but of course, those will get better and better over time.

Already it’s a great way to shop, it’s a great way to learn. It enhances the learning process. I can’t wait for it to be even more important in collaboration and so forth.

So I’m AR fan number one. I think it’s that big.

After a comment from Justine about the future impact of AR, he continued:

I mean, simple things today that you can use it for, like if you’re shopping for a sofa, or a chair, or a lamp, in terms of really experiencing it in your place, we’ve never been able to do that before until the last couple years or so. And that’s at the early innings of AR. It will only get better.

June 2022: During WWDC 2022, Cook told the state-run outlet China Daily AR needs to focus on humanity:

“I am incredibly excited about AR as you may know, and the critical thing in any technology, including AR, is putting humanity at the center of it. That is what we focus on every day,”

September 2022: During a livestream at the Universitá Degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in Naples, Italy, Cook said he thinks we will wonder how we lived without AR:

I think that we’ve had a great conversation here today, but if we could augment that with something from the virtual world, it would have arguably been even better. So I think that if you, and this will happen clearly not too long from now, if you… zoom out to the future and look back, you’ll wonder how you led your life without augmented reality. Just like today, we wonder, how did people like me grow up without the internet.

April 2023: Cook again explained Apple’s interest in AR while being interviewed by GQ’s Zach Baron:

If you think about the technology itself with augmented reality, just to take one side of the AR/VR piece, the idea that you could overlay the physical world with things from the digital world could greatly enhance people’s communication, people’s connection.

We might be able to collaborate on something much easier if we were sitting here brainstorming about it and all of a sudden we could pull up something digitally and both see it and begin to collaborate on it and create with it.

Baron then paraphrased Cook’s proposal that users could measure a glass pane or put some art up on the wall. Cook also said Apple isn’t trying to follow up anyone else’s efforts:

Can we make a significant contribution, in some kind of way, something that other people are not doing? Can we own the primary technology? I’m not interested in putting together pieces of somebody else’s stuff. Because we want to control the primary technology. Because we know that’s how you innovate.

What’s Apple’s plan for AR?

Clearly, Tim Cook has been bullish on AR for a long time. Until we see the new headset, the extent of Apple’s foray into AR will have been the 2017 launch of ARKit — which use iPhones’ and iPads’ cameras and sensors to overlay images in 3D space when the device is pointed at a given area — for iOS 11. ARKit is available across Apple’s devices, which has spurred a lot of cool little projects by amateur AR enthusiasts. When it launched, The Verge wrote that the tech had the potential to allow Apple to catch rival Google in the AR space.

Ultimately, AR on phones, for most people, probably means the occasional quick measurement or level check when you can’t find your bubble leveler. And let’s not forget plopping a virtual chair in your room, which is an admittedly cool use of AR. But one of the most striking examples of what a combination of AI and augmented reality can produce was the recent introduction of TikTok’s “Bold Glamour” face filter, which had been used in over 58 million videos by mid-May.

There have been fun apps that take advantage of ARKit beyond those use cases — Tim Cook loved the Statue of Liberty AR app enough that he cited it when he tweeted about the transformative power of AR. And, of course, there’s Pokémon Go, though that game may have been lightning in a bottle, with nothing having achieved its massive success since.

In short, the company’s AR work on phones hasn’t been the sort of bombshell that Cook’s words hint at. It’s not clear yet that the Apple mixed reality headset’s debut will be any different, at least in the short term.

Reports started trickling out in 2018 that Apple had a timeline to launch both an AR headset and AR glasses. By 2019, the company reportedly had 1,000 engineers working on its VR and AR initiative codenamed “T288”.

Rumors are heavily pointing to a WWDC 2023 reveal, possibly under the name “Reality Pro.” Descriptions available so far lay out a mixed-reality device that can seamlessly switch between AR and VR with a dial not unlike the Apple Watch’s digital crown, with an M2 Ultra processor and an external battery pack.

But it’s a first-run product that will probably come with first-run problems that will need dedicated work from Apple and good third-party support to ensure long-term success. There are supporters and detractors both inside the company and out, but given Cook’s enthusiasm and the Reality Pro’s long development period, it’s probable Apple is in it for the long haul.

It shouldn’t be all that surprising that Apple has taken its time making the Reality Pro, or whatever it’s actually called. This is, after all, the company that introduced the AirPower wireless charging pad, showed it off to the world, then canceled the product because it wasn’t up to company standards — and that was just a charging accessory, not a potential new computing paradigm.

June 2017: In a wide-ranging interview with Bloomberg News, Cook details his vision for AR at Apple:

October 2017: At an event at Oxford, Cook responds to a student who asks what technology he would consider “transformative.” Cook says there are widespread uses for AR:

November 2017: With the introduction of its ARKit platform on iOS 11, Cook says in a quarterly earnings call that Apple has created the world’s largest augmented reality platform:

This is not quite what came to pass (more on that later).

October 2017: Post-ARKit launch, Cook admits he thinks AR technology for headsets or glasses isn’t yet up to par as far as Apple is concerned.

Most technology challenges can be solved, but it’s a matter of how long.

Augmented reality is going to revolutionize many of the experiences we have with mobile devices, and with ARKit, we’re giving developers the most advanced tools on the market to create apps for the most advanced operating system running on the most advanced hardware. This is something only Apple can do.

The third — and presumably final — season of the Apple TV Plus series was stuck between a sitcom and prestige drama but still managed to end on a high note.

In the opening episode of Ted Lasso’s third season, the perpetually cheerful coach (Jason Sudeikis) found himself stuck between two worlds: the desire to stay with his soccer club, AFC Richmond, in England and complete some unfinished business with a found family and his need to go back home to the US and be with a son who is missing him very badly. It provoked a full-on existential crisis — and as the season wore on, the show itself experienced something similar.

With ballooning episode run times that were overstuffed with plotlines, the show found itself somewhere between the sitcom it started out as and the prestige drama it seemed to want to be. The result was a show that was unwieldy at times, losing sight of the things that made it such a phenomenon to begin with, while taking some strange and unnecessary detours. Thankfully, while the finale was long and self-indulgent, it remained focused — and sent off Coach Lasso with a beautiful goodbye.

This review contains spoilers for all three seasons of Ted Lasso.

Now, a lot happened in season 3. The dozen hour-plus-long episodes attempted to weave together a number of different threads in what seemed like an attempt from the writers to cram in as much as possible before it was over. Somehow, though, the season felt both too stuffed and like many of those threads were woefully underdeveloped. It made for an awkward beast of a show.

The focus on drama often meant that the laughs were hard to come by, while the spread-out storylines meant that key pieces of the drama — Nate’s (Nick Mohammed) dismissal as manager at rival West Ham, Coach Beard’s (Brendan Hunt) dark history, Keeley’s (Juno Temple) struggle with the fallout from a sex tape leak, or even how AFC Richmond somehow managed to win 15 straight games — were either not explored enough or, in some cases, like Nate’s firing, not even depicted on-screen. I sometimes felt like I missed an episode and was playing catch-up.

That’s not to say there weren’t great moments. A painfully hilarious training session involving red string had me in tears, and there were wonderful explorations of side characters, like watching Leslie (Jeremy Swift) espouse his love for jazz on a trip to Amsterdam or Dani’s (Cristo Fernández) surprising turn from supportive friend to cold enemy when his Mexico team took on Van Damme’s (Moe Jeudy-Lamour) Canada in a match. Yes, these were diversions that didn’t help the season’s bloat problem, but they were short, complete, and helped develop the cast in a natural way. But because the episodes were both so long and so unfocused, these highlights were muddled by a show that was just trying to do too much.

At first glance, the finale — with the appropriately unsubtle title “So Long, Farewell” — appears to follow suit. I mean, it’s a whopping 75 minutes long. But despite that long run time, the episode stays focused on the moment, which involves saying goodbye to Ted and wrapping up most of the loose ends.

At the outset of the episode, Ted has already made up his mind. Ahead of the last game of the season, he’s going to leave Richmond to go back home to Kansas to be with his kid. Everyone knows he’s leaving. Team owner Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) tries to get Ted to stay, offering a big raise and also subtly threatening to sell off the club if he departs. The team, meanwhile, goes full Lasso and sends him off with a choreographed number from The Sound of Music during their last practice together.

The stakes are high ahead of the final match. Richmond has a chance to pull off an underdog story and win the league and just so happens to be up against West Ham, the club owned by Rebecca’s supervillain ex-husband Rupert (Anthony Head). For once, Ted Lasso, the show about soccer, actually spends quite a bit of time on the game itself, and watching all of the dramatics unfold — improbable as many of them may be — had the same thrill as a real game. I found myself yelling at the screen the same way I did when my beloved Bayern Munich managed to steal away the German championship at the last second.

Image: Apple

Really, the finale hunkers down on the core traits of the show: sweet yet silly moments, strangely effective motivational speeches, lots of tears, and extremely on-the-nose moments when everyone pulls together, like when each member of Richmond held a tiny piece of the iconic (and ripped-up) “believe” sign. The episode is fairly predictable but also, damn it, they got me. If you’ve spent this much time with these characters, it’s hard not to get choked up seeing things like Keeley propose adding a women’s team at Richmond (finally!) or Roy (Brett Goldstein) start therapy (also finally!). Even the moments that seem a little too perfect, like Rebecca running into her mysterious Dutch hunk at the airport, are at least nice and satisfying. There’s a real catharsis to the episode, particularly when it comes to Nate’s expected redemption story and Rupert getting his comeuppance.

This is what good sitcom finales do: remind you why you loved these characters in the first place. Ted Lasso may have played at prestige drama, but this isn’t an ending about guessing who wins like in Game of Thrones or Succession. The results of the big game are, ultimately, not that important. It’s more like the last episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: knowing that things will change for these people but that everyone is moving in the right direction.

Despite an ending that seems ripped out of a rom-com (which, naturally, Ted comments on), Ted Lasso is ultimately about friendship and the things that we can learn from other people. In that way, the finale was perfectly fitting: it shows how painful it can be when these relationships change but how necessary that change is for all of us. You just have to, you know, believe.

Say, did you hear the rumor about iOS 17 from, oh, perhaps five minutes ago? Your news feed probably has a recent report about what’s coming soon for the iPhone –if not from five minutes ago, then maybe from the past few hours, or at the most, a day or two.

Reading about iOS 17 is nice and all, but as a Mac editor, what I look for in my news feed are juicy macOS rumors, something that tells us what we could see in the next version, macOS 14. And if my news feed could produce special effects based on its contents, it’d play chirping crickets. Our macOS 14 news hub has nothing. Okay, not exactly nothing, but as close to nothing as we can get–the most substantial rumor is a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claiming macOS 14 won’t have anything “groundbreaking or significant” and that it will instead bring over more iOS features.

The chirping crickets just gave way to the sad trombone.

This looks to be setting up for macOS to have such a small presence at WWDC that it’s starting to feel like an afterthought. This isn’t a new phenomenon—the last several WWDC keynotes have been a veritable wasteland for Mac-only features. We understand that the iPhone, iPad, even Apple Watch are more important products than the Mac, but it doesn’t cost much to throw Mac users a bone every once in a while. Sure Apple does bring new Macs pretty regularly, but look no further than the last several years of updates to see how utterly indifferent Apple is about macOS:.

macOS 13 Ventura: Stage Manager, Continuity Camera

At last year’s WWDC, macOS 13 Ventura had some major new features, but the two marquee features are tied to the iPhone and iPad. Stage Manager is really built for the iPad and seemed to be added to Ventura out of a need to create unity between the Mac and the iPad. Meanwhile, Continuity Camera is a great feature that fixes the terrible MacBook webcams but is really more of an iPhone feature than a Mac one. Ventura also provides new support for iCloud Shared Photo Libraries and Safari Passkeys, but those were new across Apple’s platform. Even the new Clock and Home apps are basically iPad imports. Oh, and we also got System Settings, which made System Preferences worse.

macOS 12 Monterey: Universal Control

The macOS 12 Monterey section of the WWDC 2021 keynote showcased Universal Control, a magical feature that allows the user to use one Mac to control additional Macs and iPads. It’s a feature I use all the time to this day, and every time I use it, I quickly marvel at how damn cool a feature it is, because it’s so easy to implement and it just works. But it’s really an iPad feature.

But besides Universal Control, the updates in Monterey were good, but not great: SharePlay, Quick Note, AirPlay to Mac, Live Text, and others. The Universal Control presentation at the keynote actually provided camouflage for the rest of the macOS demo, which didn’t have a lot.

macOS 11 Big Sur: iOS on the Mac

With macOS 11 Big Sur, Apple put most of its effort into refining the user interface. Big Sur introduced Control Center, which originated in iOS. Apple used its Catalyst technology to bring iOS and iPadOS apps such as Maps and Messages–that unify the look and feel of those apps across all of Apple’s platforms, which is nice. But again, nothing was nothing major that was Mac-specific, and if anything it diluted the UI elements that make the Mac different and great.

Control Center is a great feature, but it needs to do more on the Mac than it does on the iPhone

Apple

macOS 10.15 Catalina: Bye-bye iTunes

The biggest news out of macOS Catalina was the breakup of iTunes into three new apps: Music, Podcasts, and TV, which would soon become the main apps for Apple’s services. It also introduced Sidecar, which lets you use your iPad as a second display. And Catalyst gave developers the ability to quickly port iPhone and iPad apps to the Mac.

macOS 14: Does the Mac matter at all?

Perhaps Apple’s seeming indifference to macOS is just because it’s Apple’s oldest operating system running on devices that don’t change much, if at all. PCs (which includes Macs) do what they do, while mobile devices like an iPhone have varied and evolving uses depending on the model and user. So naturally, iOS requires more attention and effort.

But there’s still a lot that can be done on the Mac, more than just bringing in features and tweaks that unify Apple’s platforms. I made a wish list of macOS features, but it just lightly scratches the surface. How about finding ways to implement AI into macOS beyond Siri in a real way that helps us get work done? Or optimizations with the inner workings of macOS to improve battery life? Or how about an app that can serve as a central point for managing all of our Apple devices? With cutting edge hardware and chips, the possibilities for the Mac are bountiful, and there are plenty of ways Apple can make the Mac a priority again–and it would give us something to look forward to other than a new name and wallpapers.
