Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Apple’s contract chipmaker, said it doesn’t expect any immediate impact on its production from China’s decision to restrict the export of two metals widely used in semiconductors and electric vehicles.

Ben Blanchard and Roger Tung for Reuters:

In a move that a top Chinese trade adviser warned was “just a start,” Beijing said on Monday it would limit exports of products made from the minor metals of gallium and germanium to protect national security. That followed the U.S. decision to impose export restrictions to curb China’s access to key technologies used for artificial intelligence.

Taiwan is a major producer of chips used in everything from smartphones and cars to fighter jets, supplying companies like Apple and Nvidia.

“After evaluation, we do not expect the export restrictions on raw materials gallium and germanium will have any direct impact on TSMC’s production,” Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co said in an emailed statement. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely,” it added, without elaborating.

MacDailyNews Take: We’ll see if China does anything more with its rare earths export quota, but when they cut rare earths exports in 2010 amid tensions with the United States, it resulted in greater efforts by companies outside of China to produce the metals and China’s global market share dropped precipitously from 97% in 2010 to about 60% in 2019.

A MAC address may be the address of your Mac, but they’re not interchangeable. MAC stands for Media (or Medium) Access Control, a geeky term for a part of network communications between the actual hardware, like a Wi-Fi radio or ethernet chip and jack, and the data that flows over it. Every network adapter has a unique MAC address set by the manufacturer during production.

Why should you need to know a device’s MAC address? It can come in handy when you want to configure features on your router. You’re probably familiar with an IP (Internet Protocol) address, one that uniquely identifies your computer, phone, or other hardware’s connection on the internet. A MAC address applies only to the local area network—the collection of devices connected physically together or via Wi-Fi.

Because you almost always rely on a network router to assign IP addresses to your devices, the router can’t use an IP address to identify your hardware first. That’s where the MAC address comes in.

Router features that interact with a MAC

You might use a MAC address on a router to:

Assign a fixed IP address to a device by MAC. This can be useful if you’re trying to establish access from outside your network to a service run on a computer or other device on your network.

Create a list of only permitted devices for security’s sake. Even if someone gets the network password, they still wouldn’t be able to join the network.

Block specific devices from joining the network. I recently encountered an odd iCloud syncing problem that I might have to solve ultimately by connecting to my network via ethernet. A colleague suggested leaving Wi-Fi on for Continuity features but blocking internet access over Wi-Fi using the Wi-Fi adapter’s MAC address. (Some Continuity features, like Handoff, use a Personal Area Network [PAN], where devices connect directly.)

Restrict a child’s access to the internet during certain times of day.

Throttle the amount of data that a particular device can retrieve from the internet.

Every router has different features, so consult your manual to see what yours offers. Our household is blanketed with TP-Link devices, and an AX3000 model acts as our primary router. After connecting to the router’s administrative interface, I can, for instance, enable its Access Control feature (Advanced > Security > Access Control), add devices by MAC address or browse a list of connected hardware (showing both their IP and MAC addresses), and allow or deny them access to the network.

In macOS, look in these places:

In Ventura, go to  > System Settings > Network and select the interface. For ethernet, click Details and then click Hardware to view the MAC address. For Wi-Fi, click Advanced and the Wi-Fi MAC Address appears in the dialog.

In Monterey and earlier, go to  > System Preferences > Network and select your ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter in the lefthand list, click Advanced, and click Hardware. The MAC address appears in that view.

You can also Option-click the Wi-Fi system menu, and the MAC address for the Wi-Fi adapter appears, but it can’t be as easily copied with one hand pressing the mouse button or trackpad.

In iOS and iPadOS, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the i (info) icon. The MAC address is listed as the Wi-Fi Address. For recent versions of iOS/iPadOS, you will also see an option for a Private Wi-Fi Address, which adds complexity–that address overrides the built-in one for the Wi-Fi adapter and only persists for a few weeks at a time. You can disable Private Wi-Fi Address on known and trusted networks that you need to use a static MAC address with.

Craig Federighi, VP of software engineering at Apple, that Apple is “working with the EU” to comply with EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) which takes effect on March 6, 2024 and requires Apple to provide a means for sideloading apps; in other words: allowing access to third-party app stores for iPhones, iPads, etc.

Apple’s App Store on iPhone

Filipe Espósito for 9to5Mac:

Bloomberg reported last year that Apple was gearing up for a major change in how the iOS ecosystem works. More specific, the company would allow sideloading for the first time on iOS.

The system would still establish some security requirements for software distributed outside of the App Store, similar to what already exists on the Mac. Bloomberg later reported that Apple would allow sideloading exclusively in European Union countries, and 9to5Mac corroborated that report by finding unused code in iOS 16 to restrict new features based on a user’s location.

See also: Apple’s iOS has secret new scheme to restrict features based on geolocation – April 26, 2023

Multiple Apple executives joined John Gruber’s “The Talk Show” live after WWDC. And during the podcast recording, Craig Federighi said that “we want to make sure that whatever we do is the right thing for our customers” and that Apple is “working with the EU” to discuss compliance…

If iOS eventually gets sideloading, this will certainly be a big deal. But at the same time, Apple will try its best to make sure that the feature goes unnoticed by most users… If the rumors are true, sideloading will only be available in countries where Apple has been forced to allow it.

MacDailyNews Take: As we wrote last year:

Those who want safety, security, and privacy will stick to Apple’s App Store, but a single point of control is always a danger, especially when it comes to capricious censorship (see: pre-Musk Twitter, Apple’s App Store in China, etc.).

iPhone and iPad users must, like Mac users, have the ability to install third-party apps; even if they never do, for it will keep Apple honest. The ability to ban an app loses all power when it’s simply available in another App Store.

These moves, including removing the mandate to use WebKit, Apple’s Safari browsing engine, in third-party browsers ,will greatly reduce, if not eliminate, the threat of anti-trust actions against Apple for the foreseeable future.

Also, expect Gatekeeper to come to iOS and iPadOS from macOS.

Yes, Apple’s App Store revenue will take a hit, but there are new products for new markets on deck (AR/VR headsets, AR glasses, Apple Car, etc.) that will more than make up for any loss of App Store exclusivity.

Netflix in May started cracking down on password sharing in the United States, and the decision has worked in the company’s favor, according to subscriber data shared today by analytics company Antenna (via The Wall Street Journal).

Just after putting an end to multi-household password sharing in the United States, average daily signups to Netflix reached 73k per day, a 102 percent increase from the prior 60-day average. Netflix saw close to 100,000 daily signups on both May 26 and May 27, beating out signups even during COVID lockdown periods.

Netflix did see an increase in subscription cancelation following the policy change, but the number of people canceling did not beat the number of new signups that the company received. Antenna says that the ratio of signups to cancels since May 23 is up 25.6 percent compared to the prior 60-day period.

According to Netflix, more than 100 million households were sharing accounts, impacting its ability to “invest in and improve Netflix” for paying members. The company said that it expected some cancel reaction in the United States, but based on earlier rollouts in other countries, the policy change would result in acceleration in revenue growth and member base.

Netflix is no longer allowing subscribers to share passwords with people who do not live in the same location. Netflix users are required to establish a primary location, and subscribers who live elsewhere are not able to use the account. There are allowances for travel or second homes, but Netflix is now using IP address and other information to restrict multi-household usage.

Netflix users can pay an additional $7.99 per month to allow one extra member to use a Standard or Premium Netflix account outside of the primary location, and up to two additional people can be added (Premium plan only).

The extra fee provides each person with a profile, personalized recommendations, login, and password. Alternatively, there is a profile transfer process that will allow those who were previously using Netflix for free to make their own paid accounts.

Netflix is priced starting at $6.99 per month for the plan with ads. A basic plan with no ads, access on one device at a time, and 720p HD streaming is priced at $9.99 per month. The Standard Plan with 1080p streaming and access on two devices at one time is priced at $15.49 per month, and the 4K Netflix plan with support for watching on four devices at a time is priced at $19.99 per month.

Note that while the Standard and Premium plans allow for watching on two to four devices at a time, Netflix’s new policy is that all of those devices need to be in the same household location.
This article, "Netflix Password Sharing Crackdown Works, U.S. Subscriber Numbers Soar" first appeared on MacRumors.com

Apple announced tvOS 17 earlier this week with a handful of new features for the Apple TV, including FaceTime and a redesigned Control Center. Another new feature is support for VPN apps, although it remains to be seen if there will be any limitations.

VPN apps could allow for Apple TV users to watch geo-restricted content from any location, such as the U.S. version of Netflix in another country. In its tvOS 17 press release, however, Apple focused on how the VPN apps can benefit enterprise and education users, so it is possible that Apple could restrict usage of the apps.

Apple:

Third-party VPN support, which enables developers to create VPN apps for Apple TV. This can benefit enterprise and education users wanting to access content on their private networks, allowing Apple TV to be a great office and conference room solution in even more places.

tvOS 17 will be released later this year, and is available in beta now for anyone with an Apple developer account. The software update is compatible with all Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD models released in 2015 and later. The first VPN apps should begin to appear on the Apple TV’s App Store over the coming months.

On Tuesday, the China’s Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) proposed draft regulations to cover any service that uses Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or other technologies to create a short-distance network for transferring content. That category would include Apple’s AirDrop as well as derivatives found in Google’s Android and in Chinese phones from Vivo, Xiaomi, and Oppo, the South China Morning Post reports.

Features like Apple’s AirDrop, which allow smartphones to transfer content directly to other users nearby, may soon be restricted in China under new rules proposed by the country’s top internet regulator.

If implemented, services would need to undergo a security assessment before adding features that affect “public expression and social mobilization.” Users would also need to provide their real names and other identifying information in order to use these features, similar to other online services in China.

Providers would be required as well to report the dissemination of information deemed to be harmful, and not display preview thumbnails and screenshots without the user’s consent.

The CAC wrote that it was proposing these rules to “maintain national security.” The rules are now subject to a monthlong public consultation process.

“The core aim is to ensure that all the information transmission can be traced in case problematic things happen,” Gao Fuping, a professor at Shanghai’s East China University of Political Science and Law, told the South China Morning Post.
