In the dynamic landscape of technology, companies must continuously adapt and innovate to maintain their competitive edge. Apple Inc., one of the world’s most valuable companies, is no exception. As we look ahead to the next five years, it’s intriguing to speculate on how Apple’s value chain might evolve to sustain its position as a leader in the industry.

1. Embracing Sustainability In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on sustainability across industries. Apple has already taken significant steps in this direction by committing to carbon neutrality across its supply chain by 2030. Over the next five years, we can expect Apple to further integrate sustainability into its value chain. This could involve sourcing materials responsibly, reducing waste, and designing products with longevity in mind.

2. Vertical Integration Apple has a history of vertical integration, controlling various aspects of its supply chain, from hardware manufacturing to software development. In the next five years, we may see Apple deepen its vertical integration efforts, potentially by bringing more component manufacturing in-house or investing in semiconductor technology. This could enhance Apple’s control over product quality, innovation, and supply chain resilience.

3. Focus on Services While hardware has traditionally been Apple’s main revenue driver, there has been a strategic shift towards services in recent years. Services like Apple Music, iCloud, and Apple TV+ contribute significantly to Apple’s revenue stream and offer recurring revenue opportunities. In the next five years, we can anticipate Apple further expanding its services portfolio, potentially through acquisitions or partnerships, to diversify its revenue sources and strengthen its value chain.

4. Augmented Reality and Wearables Augmented reality (AR) and wearables represent promising growth areas for Apple. With products like the Apple Watch and AirPods gaining popularity, coupled with ongoing developments in AR technology, Apple is poised to capitalize on these trends. Over the next five years, we may see Apple deepen its investment in AR hardware and software, integrating AR capabilities into its existing product ecosystem to create new experiences for users and further differentiate its value proposition.

5. Enhancing Supply Chain Resilience The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of supply chain resilience, with disruptions impacting companies worldwide. In the next five years, Apple is likely to invest further in enhancing the resilience of its supply chain. This could involve diversifying manufacturing locations, leveraging advanced analytics and AI for demand forecasting, and building strategic partnerships with suppliers to mitigate risks and ensure continuity of operations.

Conclusion As Apple looks ahead to the next five years, it faces both challenges and opportunities in evolving its value chain. By embracing sustainability, deepening vertical integration, focusing on services, investing in AR and wearables, and enhancing supply chain resilience, Apple can position itself for continued success in a rapidly evolving technology landscape. While the specifics of Apple’s value chain evolution remain to be seen, one thing is certain: innovation will remain at the core of Apple’s strategy as it navigates the future.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Apple’s contract chipmaker, said it doesn’t expect any immediate impact on its production from China’s decision to restrict the export of two metals widely used in semiconductors and electric vehicles.

Ben Blanchard and Roger Tung for Reuters:

In a move that a top Chinese trade adviser warned was “just a start,” Beijing said on Monday it would limit exports of products made from the minor metals of gallium and germanium to protect national security. That followed the U.S. decision to impose export restrictions to curb China’s access to key technologies used for artificial intelligence.

Taiwan is a major producer of chips used in everything from smartphones and cars to fighter jets, supplying companies like Apple and Nvidia.

“After evaluation, we do not expect the export restrictions on raw materials gallium and germanium will have any direct impact on TSMC’s production,” Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co said in an emailed statement. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely,” it added, without elaborating.

MacDailyNews Take: We’ll see if China does anything more with its rare earths export quota, but when they cut rare earths exports in 2010 amid tensions with the United States, it resulted in greater efforts by companies outside of China to produce the metals and China’s global market share dropped precipitously from 97% in 2010 to about 60% in 2019.

Apple supplier Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company today confirmed to TechCrunch that it recently suffered a data breach. TSMC is responsible for creating all of the A-series and M-series chips used in Apple devices.

A TSMC spokesperson said that a “cybersecurity incident” caused data “pertinent to server initial setup and configuration” to leak, but TSMC customer information was not impacted.

“Upon review, this incident has not affected TSMC’s business operations, nor did it compromise any TSMC’s customer information. After the incident, TSMC has immediately terminated its data exchange with this concerned supplier in accordance with the Company’s security protocols and standard operating procedures.”

Data from TSMC was listed on the LockBit ransomware gang’s website on Thursday, with LockBit demanding $70 million to prevent it from publishing the stolen data. LockBit has attacked pharmaceutical companies, the UK’s Royal Mail, U.S. government websites, and more.

LockBit says that if TSMC does not pay up, it will also publish passwords and logins. The data was stolen from Kinmax Technology, a company that provides IT services like networking, cloud computing, storage, and database management. Kinmax was working with TSMC, and on Thursday, told TSMC that its “internal specific testing environment was attacked,” leading to the leak of “system installation preparation.”

Other Kinmax partners include Microsoft, Cisco, and VMware, and it is not known if those companies were also impacted.

Four days before Apple entered, and redefined, the nascent extended-reality (XR) headset market by going far, far beyond merely that with an entirely new platform, ushering in spatial computing, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Platforms pre-announced the latest version of its Quest mixed-reality headset in a panic.

Apple Vision Pro features a pair of advanced, custom micro‑OLED displays deliver more pixels than a 4K TV to each eye — for stunning clarity.

Tae Kim for Barron’s:

Meta executives were likely dismayed over the positive reception for Apple’s headset innovations. The maker of the Quest VR devices has already lost tens of billions of dollars in projects tied to the metaverse inside its Reality Labs unit. And when the company launched its $1,500 Meta Quest Pro last October, it was criticized for lack of innovation. Management cut the price by $500 to $1,000 in subsequent months.

The main problem for Meta is that it lacks Apple’s advantages in custom-design chip prowess and ownership of a dominant mobile operating system. Meta relies on third-party chip suppliers like Qualcomm, whose semiconductor designs are far behind Apple’s. Meta also lacks the large ecosystem surrounding Apple’s iPhone App Store, a vast library of software that developers can easily port over to the Vision Pro.

Mass adoption may be years away for the AR/VR market. But this week’s product announcement shows the category is now Apple’s to lose.

MacDailyNews Take: As we wrote a week ago about Meta’s panicky pre-announcement:

Shades of Ballmer’s flop-sweat-submerged “reveal” of “HP slate” vaporware just ahead of Apple’s iPad unveiling.

Zuckerberg’s panic has, in one fell swoop, removed any reason for whatever potential buyers he had to buy Meta’s “Quest 2” headset (Osborne Effect) just as Apple is about to appropriate all of the planet’s AR/VR/XR air until Christmas and beyond. It was the absolute worst move he could have made and Apple, without a peep, pushed him into making it.

Enjoy your lead in the VR headset market, Meta, because it’s about to evaporate forever, just like your user-tracking advertising revenue.

Ben Thompson for Stratechery:

The unfortunate reality for Meta is that they seem completely out-classed on the hardware front. Yes, Apple is working with a 7x advantage in price, which certainly contributes to things like superior resolution, but that bit about the deep integration between Apple’s own silicon and its custom-made operating system are going to very difficult to replicate for a company that has (correctly) committed to an Android-based OS and a Qualcomm-designed chip.

One of Apple’s biggest advancements with Vision Pro is eliminating handheld controllers and, in doing so, making every so-called rival’s VR headset look like a horse and buggy in comparison, but the main thing is that Vision Pro is not a “VR headset” or “AR headset” or whatever. It’s a computer. A “spatial computer,” to be precise.

— SteveJack, MacDailyNews, June 6, 2023

The PowerMega 3 Ports Fast Charger stands as a versatile, remarkably compact, and exceptionally powerful charging station meticulously designed to cater to all your device charging needs.

As smaller devices take on heavier workloads and use more battery, it’s becoming increasingly necessary for people to use higher-end chargers to replenish their devices in a reasonable amount of time. In addition, these chargers serve as a good way to future-proof against more power-hungry devices. With many high-wattage chargers only having one or two ports, the PowerMega is a welcome addition to those who need fast charging on the go and at home. Since 2011, Baseus has been dedicated to crafting efficient and minimalist products. They have developed numerous high-power chargers and batteries utilizing Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology.
