Apple has always been at the forefront of innovation, consistently pushing the boundaries of technology. As the virtual reality (VR) industry gains momentum, there is growing anticipation about Apple’s potential entry into this immersive space. In this article, we will explore the exciting possibilities of new products and services that Apple could introduce in the virtual reality domain.

1. Apple VR Headset

Design and Comfort: Imagine an Apple-designed VR headset that not only boasts cutting-edge technology but also sets a new standard for comfort and aesthetics. Apple could leverage its expertise in sleek design to create a lightweight, stylish headset that users can wear for extended periods without discomfort.

Advanced Display Technology: With Apple’s commitment to high-quality displays, the VR headset could feature a stunning, high-resolution display for an unparalleled visual experience. Incorporating advanced technologies like MicroLED could elevate the clarity and vibrancy of virtual environments.

Gesture Controls and Interaction: Apple is known for its intuitive user interfaces, and the VR headset could introduce innovative gesture controls, allowing users to interact seamlessly with the virtual world. This could include gestures for navigation, selection, and manipulation of virtual objects.

2. Apple AR Glasses

Blending Reality with Augmented Reality (AR): While VR immerses users in a completely virtual environment, Apple could take a different approach with AR glasses. These glasses could overlay digital information onto the real world, providing users with a mixed-reality experience. Imagine walking down the street and receiving contextual information about your surroundings or seeing navigation directions seamlessly integrated into your field of view.

Enhanced Connectivity with Apple Ecosystem: Apple’s AR glasses could seamlessly integrate with other Apple devices, enhancing connectivity and synchronization. Users could, for example, answer calls, receive notifications, or control smart home devices directly through their AR glasses, creating a seamless and integrated user experience.

Advanced Spatial Awareness: Utilizing advanced sensors and cameras, Apple AR glasses could offer users a heightened sense of spatial awareness. This could enable features such as accurate object recognition, depth sensing, and improved positional tracking, enhancing the overall AR experience.

3. Apple VR Content and Services

Exclusive VR Experiences: To differentiate itself in the VR space, Apple could invest in creating exclusive VR content and experiences. This could include partnerships with renowned developers and studios to produce immersive games, educational content, and virtual travel experiences available exclusively on Apple’s VR platform.

Apple VR App Store: Similar to the App Store for iOS devices, Apple could launch a dedicated VR App Store, offering a curated selection of VR applications. This marketplace could foster a vibrant ecosystem of VR developers, further expanding the range of available experiences for users.

Collaborative VR Spaces: Apple could introduce collaborative VR spaces where users from around the world can connect, socialize, and work together in a virtual environment. This could redefine how people collaborate remotely, providing a more immersive and engaging alternative to traditional video conferencing.

Conclusion

As Apple continues to explore the possibilities within the virtual reality space, the potential for groundbreaking products and services is immense. Whether through a revolutionary VR headset, innovative AR glasses, or a diverse range of VR content, Apple has the opportunity to shape the future of immersive technology. With a history of transforming industries, the tech giant’s entry into virtual reality promises to be nothing short of revolutionary.

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, Apple has once again taken a groundbreaking leap with its new Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) headset. This innovative device promises to redefine the way we experience entertainment and communication, pushing the boundaries of what was previously thought possible.

The Fusion of Augmented and Virtual Realities

AR: Bridging the Gap Between Virtual and Real Worlds

Augmented Reality, commonly known as AR, overlays digital information onto the physical world. Apple’s AR headset is set to seamlessly blend digital elements with real-world surroundings, enhancing our day-to-day experiences. From interactive gaming to immersive educational content, the possibilities are limitless.

VR: Immersing Users in Alternate Realities

On the other hand, Virtual Reality (VR) transports users to entirely different realms. Apple’s headset is expected to deliver a high-quality VR experience, providing users with the sensation of being present in a completely virtual environment. This opens up new frontiers in gaming, simulations, and virtual travel.

Redefining Entertainment

Gaming: A New Dimension of Interactive Experiences

The integration of AR and VR in gaming is poised to revolutionize the industry. Apple’s AR/VR headset promises to offer gamers a level of immersion never seen before. With realistic graphics, interactive gameplay, and spatial awareness, players will find themselves at the forefront of a gaming revolution.

Cinematic Experiences: Bringing Movies to Life

Imagine watching your favorite movie as if you were part of the story. Apple’s AR/VR headset aims to provide users with cinematic experiences that go beyond the confines of traditional screens. Whether it’s a thrilling action sequence or a serene landscape, users can expect to be fully immersed in the visual narrative.

Transforming Communication

Virtual Meetings: Breaking Barriers in Remote Collaboration

In an era where remote work and virtual meetings have become the norm, Apple’s AR/VR headset seeks to redefine the way we collaborate. The headset’s advanced features are anticipated to enhance virtual meetings, making them more interactive and engaging. Users can expect a more lifelike representation of their colleagues, making remote collaboration feel closer to in-person interactions.

Social Interaction: Connecting in Virtual Spaces

Beyond business meetings, the AR/VR headset promises to reshape social interactions. Apple envisions a future where friends and family can gather in virtual spaces, regardless of physical distances. This has the potential to transform the way we connect with loved ones, bringing people together in immersive virtual environments.

The Future of Wearable Technology

Apple’s foray into AR and VR signifies a major step forward in the evolution of wearable technology. The AR/VR headset is expected to be a sleek and comfortable device, seamlessly integrating into users’ daily lives. As technology continues to advance, Apple’s commitment to creating innovative and user-friendly products is evident in this ambitious venture.

Conclusion

In the realm of technology, Apple has consistently been a trailblazer, and the AR/VR headset is no exception. By combining the best of Augmented and Virtual Realities, Apple aims to reshape entertainment and communication. From immersive gaming experiences to revolutionizing remote collaboration, this innovative device holds the potential to redefine how we interact with the digital world. As we eagerly anticipate its release, one thing is clear – Apple’s AR/VR headset is set to shape the future of entertainment and communication in ways we could only dream of until now.

With the release of iPadOS 16, Apple takes a giant leap forward in unlocking the iPad’s potential for creativity and collaboration. This update introduces a myriad of features and enhancements, empowering users to push the boundaries of what they can achieve with their iPads.

Revolutionizing the Creative Experience

Enhanced Multitasking

iPadOS 16 brings a refined multitasking experience, allowing users to seamlessly switch between apps and workflows with greater ease. The improved App Exposé and Split View functionality enable users to effortlessly manage multiple tasks simultaneously, fostering a more fluid creative process.

Advanced Apple Pencil Integration

For the artistically inclined, iPadOS 16 elevates the Apple Pencil experience to new heights. Enhanced precision and sensitivity provide a more natural and responsive feel, making it easier than ever to create intricate designs and detailed illustrations. Whether you’re an illustrator, designer, or note-taker, the Apple Pencil becomes an even more indispensable tool in your creative arsenal.

Facilitating Seamless Collaboration

Collaborative Workspaces

With a focus on teamwork and collaboration, iPadOS 16 introduces Collaborative Workspaces, a feature that enables multiple users to work on the same document or project simultaneously. This real-time collaboration feature is a game-changer for businesses, educators, and creative professionals who rely on efficient teamwork.

Site plans obtained by the Triangle Business Journal show the first phase of the huge project includes a 41-acre development with six buildings and a parking garage.
The other two office buildings will total just over 230,000 square feet. The plans list three accessory buildings with sizes of 142,500 square feet, 12,300 square feet and just under 36,000 square feet.

More than two years after Apple announced plans to invest over $1 billion in North Carolina with over half of that investment going towards a new engineering and research center in the Research Triangle area of Raleigh and Durham, the company has finally filed development plans for the first phase with local authorities.

Assemblage of seven properties in Research Triangle Park owned by Apple

As shared by the Triangle Business Journal, the 41-acre initial phase at Research Triangle Park will include six buildings and a parking garage totaling 700,000 square feet of office space, 190,000 square feet of accessory space, and almost 3,000 parking spaces.

Among the structures in the first phase are three office buildings with the largest coming in at around 242,000 square feet and the other two measuring just over 230,000 square feet each. All three buildings are listed as having heights of 73 feet.

Three smaller accessory buildings will join a parking garage for the initial phase, which does not yet have a disclosed starting date for construction. A starting date does appear to be close, however, as Apple has begun some initial site preparations and is moving forward on obtaining various approvals.

While this initial phase covers 41 acres, Apple owns a total of 281 acres at the site and the company's filed plans allude to future phases. Apple had said in its announcement about the North Carolina investment that it will eventually create at least 3,000 new jobs in "machine learning, artificial intelligence, software engineering, and other cutting-edge fields" with average salaries ultimately approaching $200,000.

At full buildout, Apple's Research Triangle Park campus is likely to become one of the company's largest employment centers in the United States after its Silicon Valley headquarters area and a major existing campus in Austin, Texas, that is itself seeing significant investment and expansion. Other major Apple employment centers in the U.S. include Southern California, the Seattle area, and New York City.

As Apple prepares to construct its major new campus in Research Triangle Park, the company has already been building up its presence in the region with temporary space, headlined by a takeover of one building of a three-building complex in neighboring Cary that had been built for insurance company MetLife.

Amid the rise in remote work, MetLife was recently able to consolidate operations into two buildings of the complex, freeing up the third to be used by Apple. Apple has also been working to acquire additional temporary space in the area as it will be several more years before its own campus is ready.
This article, "First Phase of Apple's New North Carolina Campus Will Total 900,000 Square Feet" first appeared on MacRumors.com

Discuss this article in our forums
<br

According to Kate Smith, an Arlington, Virginia psychologist and color theorist, owners of red iPhones are attention-seekers while those who choose black iPhones are self-assured.

Apple’s iPhone 14

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are available in six colors: midnight, starlight, (PRODUCT)RED, blue, purple, and yellow.

Color theory is the study of how colors are perceived and how they can be used to create different effects. Human psychology is the study of the human mind and how it works. Color theory and human psychology intersect in the field of color psychology, which studies how colors can affect our emotions, thoughts, and behavior.

Color psychology is used in a variety of fields, including marketing, design, and therapy. Marketers use color psychology to create products and advertising that will appeal to consumers’ subconscious desires. Designers use color psychology to create spaces that are visually appealing and functional. Therapists use color psychology to help people with a variety of mental health issues.

Todd Plummer for The Wall Street Journal:

What does the color of your Apple iPhone say about you? Ms. Smith offers some expert insights.

Uplifting Yellow: Lovers of this sunny shade are drawn to its uplifting associations and mood-boosting effect…

Urbane Lavender: People who appreciate life’s complexity are most attracted to the color. Or, pop-culture influences could pull you toward purple…

Resolute Red: People drawn to this fiery tint are outgoing attention-seekers who place value in their strong opinions.

Gregarious Green: Greens indicate intelligence and a “community-focused” mind-set, but that lighter versions hint at more empathy…

Trusty Blue: Blue-phone owners, said Ms. Smith, are likely “trustworthy or want to be seen as trustworthy.” But they have their quirks—specifically a proclivity for day dreaming.

Powerful Black: Classic and classy, a black phone could confer self-assuredness and connoisseurship. It’s a shade that signifies reserved strength.

MacDailyNews Take: We weren’t buying into this iPhone color theory… until we got down to “Powerful Black.”

As you can guess from our proclivity to choose non-colors, favoring blacks and grays… “Matte Black” sounds glorious! — MacDailyNews, July 20, 2021

Steve [Jobs] made us spend a half hour deciding what hue of gray the [Apple Store] restroom signs should be. — Lee Clow, Chairman and Global Director of TBWA\Worldwide

If you’ve ordered a new iPhone recently, you’ll notice that the box is a whole lot slimmer than in previous years. That’s because the bulkiest accessory is gone: the power adapter. Apple has removed the charger from all iPhones it sells, so whether you’re spending $429/£449 on an iPhone SE or $1,599/£1,749 on a maxed-out iPhone 14 Pro Max, you need to bring your own charger.

Any old charger and Lightning cable you have lying around will work, of course. But if you’ve been using Apple’s feeble old 5W adapter, it’s a perfect time to upgrade. Apple now supplies a USB-C-to-Lightning cable in all iPhone boxes to allow for fast charging, so all you need is the right charger. Here we list our favorite iPhone chargers (iPhone 12 and later) that use USB-C but paired with the right cable they will work wonders for older iPhones, too.

Watch the wattage

The most important thing to consider when buying a new charger is the amount of wattage it will provide to your device. For years, Apple supplied “good-enough” 5-watt chargers in the iPhone box, which take about 2.5 hours to fill up your iPhone. That was fine for the iPhone 5 and earlier, which didn’t support fast charging, but the newest iPhone models are capable of working with chargers that handle up to 20 watts. You can fill up about 50 percent of an iPhone 14’s battery in about 30 minutes with the right adapter.

You should get a USB-C charger that’s capable of delivering a 20W charge. Quite frankly, it’s harder to find one that doesn’t than one that does, but you’ll want to make sure you’re at least getting the bare minimum to allow for maximum iPhone fast charging. You’ll also want to make sure the charger supports USB Power Delivery, which any third-party charger almost certainly will do.

Wired and wireless

Whether you charge your iPhone wirelessly or not, you still need a wall charger to supply the power, and even wireless requires a cable from that power adapter to the charging pad. While Apple ships a USB-C to Lightning cable with each iPhone for wired charging, most of the chargers tested here don’t come with a cable.

From the iPhone 8 on, iPhones have the ability to be charged wirelessly. The latest iPhone models also feature Apple’s superior MagSafe wireless charging technology that uses magnets to make the connection with the wireless charging pad more efficient; check out our roundup of the best MagSafe chargers, most of which require one of the USB-C wall chargers tested here.

Charging with a cable plugged into the iPhone will always be faster than wireless; we list some of the best iPhone charge cables later in this article and in our roundup of the best Lightning cables.

Check the size and the specs

Apple’s chargers have always been light, small, and portable, but some third-party adapters make Apple’s seem downright bulky. That’s due to the newest charging tech, gallium nitride (GaN), which allows for adapters that are significantly smaller and more power-efficient.

Charger makers have already begun replacing the silicon inside power adapters with gallium nitride, and the size difference is significant. For example, the Anker PowerPort Atom III is 35 percent smaller than the adapter Apple supplies with the 13-inch MacBook Pro, despite delivering the same 60-watt charge.

Count the ports

Many adapters offer multiple ports on a single wall charger. If you’re going to be regularly charging more than one device at a time, buy an adapter with at least two ports—some have as many as four ports. You can even get a mix of USB-C and USB-A, depending on your needs.

Plugs: To fold or not to fold

After you decide how much power and how many ports you need, just one question remains: Do you want the plug to fold or not? Some chargers have folding pins to protect the adapter as well as other items if you toss it in a bag, but Apple’s 20W charger and a few others have protruding prongs. It’s a small thing, but it could make a big difference in your travel bag.

As any traveler knows, plugs come in all shapes and sizes around the globe. We’ve tried to cover the most used types here. Some USB-C power adapters even come with different prong sets so you can leave the multi-holed travel adapter at home when you travel.

Why we love it: Apple’s 20W USB-C power adapter is as basic as it gets. It’s one of the bulkiest chargers on this list as well as one of the heaviest, it won’t charge a laptop, and you can’t charge more than one device at a time. However, if you want to keep your chargers in the family, it’s a solid option for $19/£19. And if you’re planning on buying an iPhone 15, it might be the only choice if you want to get fast charging.

In our testing, it won’t charge your phone noticeably faster than the old Apple 18W plug, but it is noticeably cheaper than the model it replaces. We’d like it better if Apple offered a half-price option for iPhone buyers, but even at full price, it’s not a terrible value at all. The U.S. and Australian models don’t feature a folding plug, but the more cube-like U.K. model does, despite the larger plug type, and is a much cleaner design as a result. The hideaway pins on the U.K. model make it our favorite single-port iPhone charger in that country.

Why we love it: At 1.26 x 1.26 x 1.57 inches and 48g (U.S. model), the tiny Ugreen Nexode 30W GaN Charger is slightly larger than the Anker PowerPort III (reviewed below) but can supply 30W of power rather than just 20W. To make it even more portable, bith the U.S. and U.K. models have foldable prongs.

That extra power won’t make much difference with most iPhones as 20W is enough for fast charging. But if you have an iPhone 13 Pro Max or 14 Pro Max, a 30W charger will allow it to charge a little faster (27W), and it certainly won’t hurt to have the added power on other models. AT 30W, It could even recharge a 13-inch MacBook Air!

Why we love it: The Minix NEO P3 100W Turbo packs a lot of power and has four ports: three USB-C and one old-school USB-A.

Two of the USB-C ports can charge at 100W, although obviously not at the same time. That means you can use this power adapter to charge a large laptop as well as tablets and phones. The third USB-C is perfect for phone charging at 20W, as is the 18W USB-A port if you have an older charging cable.

Using two ports at the same time it supports one 65W and one 30W feed. Using three supports 45W, 30W, and 20W charges. With all four, it supports, 45W, 30W, and two 7.5W feeds.

Like Apple’s dual-port charger, this adapter features intelligent power allocation, automatically adjusting the power output of each port depending on the devices connected to it.

The U.S. plug folds, making it a tidy package for carrying around, and the U.K. and EU pin converters simply slide onto the U.S. pins to make this a great home charger in those territories and a useful international travel companion.

Why we love it: The OneWorld 65 is an international adapter that also boasts a built-in 65W PD Charger that can charge up to six devices simultaneously.

It features one 65W USB-C PD port, one 20W USB-C PD port, another USB-C charging port, and two USB-A charging ports—the non-PD USB-C port and two USB-A ports share 15W of power. Note that the maximum power output is 65W so if you are charging a mid-sized laptop in full use, there won’t be much spare juice for your iPhone.

But the real benefit of the OneWorld 65 is that as well as all the USB ports you can also use this as a travel adapter. Sliding connectors will fit into US, European, Australian/Chinese, and British wall sockets so covering over 200 countries, and you can plug a similar range of plugs into the OneWorld 65 from the other side.

Why we love it: Apple recently released its own dual-port USB-C charger in two models. As far as we can tell they are identical in everything except shape and size. As an Apple product, it’s reassuringly expensive but also a little smarter than most power adapters.

There are two models: the neat 35W Dual USB-C Port Compact Power Adapter aimed at iPhone users, and a larger non-compact model called the 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter, which is the one built for the new M2 MacBook Air. Both U.S. models feature foldable plugs. The larger version is maybe only preferable if you prefer the ports pointing straight on rather than below the plug itself.

As it was designed to work with an iPhone and also something as energy-hungry as an M2 MacBook Air, it needs to be able to distinguish which device needs what. When you connect two devices, power is automatically distributed between them based on their power requirements. In most cases, it will give each device 17.5W, but if you connect a MacBook or iPhone and an Apple Watch or AirPods, it will receive up to 27.5W and the Watch/AirPods gets up to 7.5W.

Apple doesn’t say so, but we expect that it uses GaN technology to keep its size to a minimum.

Why we love it: We spotlighted numerous gallium nitride chargers on this list, but Spigen’s PowerArc 20W (1.56 x 1.36 x 1.09 inches) is one of the smallest. When opened, it’s only a bit larger than Apple’s prior 5W adapter (which measures 1.74 x 1.01 x 1.03 inches) but charges four times as fast, whether you’re using a USB-C-to-Lightning cable or a MagSafe cable, thanks to GaNFast technology instead of old-fashioned silicon. The fold-up plug keeps the size down and ensures it won’t get snagged on anything in your bag, and its small size means it won’t block other chargers in a power strip.

The U.K. version’s larger plug type sadly means no foldable pins but it’s still a likable little chap.

With Fast Charge, Apple says that the iPhone 12/13/14 and up will reach a 50 percent charge in around 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher. The larger Pro Max iPhone models will see a speed increase if you use a 30W charger.

Most of the iPhone chargers we have tested here are rated at 20W. To be sure you’re getting all the power you need, you’ll want a modern power adapter that works with at least USB-PD 3.0, which is especially important if you are charging with MagSafe.

You can buy more powerful chargers—at up to 100W—but they won’t speed up the charging process as the iPhone can only take so much at a time. However, a more powerful charger means you can use it to power up a tablet or MacBook, too, and with multiple ports, you can charge devices simultaneously.

Apple today announced the availability of new software tools and technologies that enable developers to create groundbreaking app experiences for Apple Vision Pro — Apple’s first spatial computer. Featuring visionOS, the world’s first spatial operating system, Vision Pro lets users interact with digital content in their physical space using the most natural and intuitive inputs possible — their eyes, hands, and voice

Apple Vision Pro features a pair of advanced, custom micro‑OLED displays deliver more pixels than a 4K TV to each eye — for stunning clarity.

Starting today, Apple’s global community of developers will be able to create an entirely new class of spatial computing apps that take full advantage of the infinite canvas in Vision Pro and seamlessly blend digital content with the physical world to enable extraordinary new experiences. With the visionOS SDK, developers can utilize the powerful and unique capabilities of Vision Pro and visionOS to design brand-new app experiences across a variety of categories including productivity, design, gaming, and more.

Next month, Apple will open developer labs in Cupertino, London, Munich, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo to provide developers with hands-on experience to test their apps on Apple Vision Pro hardware and get support from Apple engineers. Development teams will also be able to apply for developer kits to help them quickly build, iterate, and test right on Apple Vision Pro.

“Apple Vision Pro redefines what’s possible on a computing platform. Developers can get started building visionOS apps using the powerful frameworks they already know, and take their development even further with new innovative tools and technologies like Reality Composer Pro, to design all-new experiences for their users,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations, in a statement. “By taking advantage of the space around the user, spatial computing unlocks new opportunities for our developers, and enables them to imagine new ways to help their users connect, be productive, and enjoy new types of entertainment. We can’t wait to see what our developer community dreams up.”

Apple Vision Pro has an all-new App Store where users can discover amazing apps and content.

Developers can build new experiences that take advantage of the groundbreaking features of Apple Vision Pro by using the same foundational frameworks they already know from other Apple platforms, including powerful technologies like Xcode, SwiftUI, RealityKit, ARKit, and TestFlight. These tools enable developers to create new types of apps that span a spectrum of immersion, including windows, which have depth and can showcase 3D content; volumes, which create experiences that are viewable from any angle; and spaces, which can fully immerse a user in an environment with unbounded 3D content. To help developers optimize 3D content for their visionOS apps and games, an all-new tool available with Xcode called Reality Composer Pro lets them preview and prepare 3D models, animations, images, and sounds, so they look amazing on Vision Pro.

Developers can also interact with their apps in the new visionOS simulator to explore and test various room layouts and lighting conditions. And every developer framework comes with built-in support for Apple’s innovative accessibility features to ensure spatial computing and visionOS apps are accessible to everyone.
Starting next month, developers who have been building 3D apps and games with Unity’s robust authoring tools can port their Unity apps to Apple Vision Pro and take full advantage of its powerful capabilities.

Developers who have previewed the visionOS SDK and APIs are excited for the potential of the platform and how it will enable them to create all-new app experiences for their users:

“With Apple Vision Pro, Complete HeartX will help prepare medical students for clinical practice by using hyper-realistic 3D models and animations that help them understand and visualize medical issues, such as ventricular fibrillation, and how to apply their knowledge with patients,” said Jan Herzhoff, Elsevier Health’s president, in a statement. “Learning through Complete HeartX on Apple Vision Pro will transform medical education and prepare future health professionals for practice.”

“The djay app on Apple Vision Pro puts a fully featured DJ system right at a user’s fingertips. With a reimagined spatial interface, anyone can mix their favorite music and apply real-time effects using just their eyes and hands,” said Karim Morsy, Algoriddim’s CEO, in a statement. “Whether for a beginner or a seasoned professional, djay on Vision Pro transforms the user’s surroundings with stunning environments that automatically react to their mix, enabling them to experience and interact with music in ways never before possible.”

“JigSpace and Apple Vision Pro empower people and businesses to easily communicate their ideas or products in all-new ways,” said Zac Duff, JigSpace’s cofounder and CEO, in a statement. “It uses the high-resolution CAD files companies already have, so their marketing, sales, product, or support teams can securely collaborate with colleagues or customers from anywhere in the world and get people to that ‘Aha!’ moment in a fraction of the time it usually takes. This level of fast, effective communication simply wasn’t possible before.”

“Manufacturers can use AR solutions from PTC to collaborate on critical business problems by bringing interactive 3D content into the real world — from a single product, to an entire production line,” said Stephen Prideaux-Ghee, PTC’s chief technology officer of AR/VR, in a statement. “With Apple Vision Pro, stakeholders across departments and in different locations can review content simultaneously to make design and operation decisions. This capability will unlock a level of collaboration previously not possible.”

As some subreddits continue blackouts to protest Reddit’s plans to charge high prices for its API, Reddit has informed the moderators of those subreddits that it has plans to replace resistant moderation teams to keep spaces “open and accessible to users.”

In a comment shared by r/Apple moderator @aaronp613, Reddit cited its Moderator Code of Conduct and said that it has a duty to keep communities “relied upon by thousands or even millions of users” operational. Mods who do not agree to reopen subreddits that have gone private will be removed.

If a moderator team unanimously decides to stop moderating, we will invite new, active moderators to keep these spaces open and accessible to users. If there is no consensus, but at least one mod wants to keep the community going, we will respect their decisions and remove those who no longer want to moderate from the mod team.

Between Monday and Wednesday of this week, the majority of popular subreddits on the Reddit site participated in a “blackout” and went private or stopped allowing new posts to be made in order to protest planned API changes that will cause the shutdown of popular third-party Reddit apps like Apollo.

Reddit is just digging the hole deeper and deeper.

They are essentially threatening moderators of subreddits that are blacking out indefinitely that they will be removed. https://t.co/IeU3inmyf4 pic.twitter.com/HF4t3EO1JS

— Aaron (@aaronp613) June 15, 2023

The move was aimed at pushing Reddit to enact fairer pricing for developers and to give developers more time to adopt the API changes, but Reddit opted to wait out the protests rather than make adjustments.

As a result, some subreddits such as r/Apple made the decision to continue the blackout indefinitely, which means millions of Reddit users no longer have access to those communities. It seems Reddit plans to forcibly end further blackouts by removing entire moderation teams that are participating.

On Monday, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said that the blackouts had not caused “any significant revenue impact so far” and that while there was a “lot of noise” amid the planned two-day protest, it would “pass.” In an interview with The Verge today, Huffman further said that Reddit’s API was “never designed to support third-party apps” and that the apps don’t add much value to the site. Reddit created its API for “tools, bots and enhancements to Reddit,” according to Huffman.

Huffman confirmed that the blackouts have made no change to Reddit’s API pricing plan. “That’s our business decision, and we’re not undoing that business decision,” said Huffman. Huffman said in the interview that Reddit will not force communities to reopen, which contradicts the messaging that moderators are receiving.

Reddit also just published a blog post with “key facts” about the API updates. In the post, Reddit says that “dissent, debate, and discussions are foundational parts of Reddit,” and that it respects the right of its community to protest, so long as mods follow the Moderator Code of Conduct. The Moderator Code of Conduct is what Reddit is citing in messaging to moderators about moderation teams being removed from closed communities.

Moderators and Reddit users are unhappy with Reddit’s decision to charge an unreasonable amount for its API, and for the short 30-day timeline that third-party developers have been given to adopt the new API fees.

Apollo developer Christian Selig determined that adopting the API would cost him $20 million per year, leading him to decide to shut down his app on June 30, a day before Reddit begins charging. As of July 1, there will be few if any third-party apps for viewing Reddit content, pushing Reddit users to either the Reddit website or the Reddit app.
