The iPhone 15 Pro models that are set to be introduced this September will be available in a unique dark blue color that has a gray tone, according to Unknownz21, a source that has provided multiple details on what we can expect from the next-generation iPhones and accurate information on other Apple devices like the Vision Pro.

Available in a new titanium material, the blue shade will have a brushed finish that is unlike the stainless steel that Apple has had in the past. The color is similar to the blue that Apple used for the iPhone 12 Pro models, but it appears to be darker and with more gray to better complement the titanium finish. We’ve created a series of images that show the expected blue shade.

Blue is expected to accompany silver, space gray/space black, and titanium gray shades, with the latter color a lighter silver-gray than the space gray/space black shade.

We’ve seen multiple rumors of a deep red color for the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ models, but Unknownz21 has not seen signs that this color is in development. The blue color, however, has been used on ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ prototype devices, suggesting that the blue could be the final color that Apple is working on.

There is always a chance that Apple is using the blue to test PVD coating on the new titanium material and will transition to a different color the launch version of the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌, but the blue being used for prototyping likely indicates that it is one of the color options that Apple plans to provide for the next-generation smartphones. MacRumors has seen extensive evidence confirming that Apple has used the blue color for prototype versions of the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌.

As for the iPhone 15 models, colors that we know of so far include a bright pink shade, a bright blue, and a green color.

When it comes to design, the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ models will look similar to the iPhone 14 Pro models, but with some minor design tweaks. Slimmer bezels around the display are expected, and the mute switch will be replaced by a multi-function mute button. There will be a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port, and the volume and power buttons could be in slightly different locations.

The camera lens layout will see an update on the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max to accommodate the periscope lens that’s exclusive to that device, and with the new titanium frame finish that’s less shiny, the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ models will stand out compared to the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ models.

For more on what to expect from the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌, we have a complete iPhone 15 Pro roundup where we highlight all of the rumors we’ve heard so far.

Apple has removed several predatory lending apps from its App Store in India this week, days after media and app store shoppers questioned the legitimacy of those services.

Manish Singh for TechCrunch:

Pocket Kash, White Kash, Golden Kash, and OK Rupee are among the apps that Apple pulled from the store this week. The apps offered fast-track lending to consumers in India, climbing to the top 20 of the finance list on the App Store in recent weeks. But they also levied outrageously superfluous charges, according to hundreds of user reviews.

The lenders also employed downright unethical tactics to get the borrowers to pay back.

“I borrowed an amount in a helpless situation and […] a day before repayment due date I got some messages with my pic and my contacts in my phone saying that repay your loan otherwise they will inform our contacts that your not paying loan,” a user review from last month said.

The apps — whose developers had strange names and suspicious websites — were littered with hundreds of similar reviews, some sharing even more alarming threats that they allegedly received from the lenders.

Wtf is this, a personal loan app called Kash is threatening to send morphed nude photos of their customer to her entire contact list?! pic.twitter.com/5LcsukVgef

MacDailyNews Take: Obviously, these apps do not adhere to Apple’s App Store rules and, thankfully, Apple has quickly removed them. How responsive would some third-party app store be?

Twitter appears to be unhappy with the runaway success of Threads, Meta’s Twitter alternative that launched last night. Threads has amassed more than 30 million users in under 24 hours, making it the biggest threat to Twitter to date.

According to Semafor, Twitter lawyer Alex Spiro yesterday sent Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg a letter [PDF] accusing Meta of “systemic, willful, and lawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property.”

Twitter claims that Meta hired “dozens” of former Twitter employees that “had and continue to have access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other highly confidential information.” The company further says that the employees “improperly retained Twitter documents and electronic devices,” and that Meta took advantage of this to have those workers develop the “copycat” Threads app on an accelerated timeline.

When Elon Musk took over as CEO of Twitter, he fired thousands of employees who then had to look for work. It is likely that some of those employees transitioned to Meta, but hiring people actively looking for a job is typically considered poaching.

Competition is fine, cheating is not

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 6, 2023

Twitter’s letter says that it plans to “enforce its intellectual property rights,” with the company demanding that Meta “take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets.” Twitter threatens that it reserves the right to seek “civil remedies and injunctive relief” to prevent Meta from using its intellectual property.

Along with claims that Meta poached Twitter employees to develop Threads, Twitter says that Meta is “expressly prohibited” from scraping Twitter’s followers or following data. Twitter is asking Meta to “preserve any documents” that could be relevant to a future dispute, suggesting that Twitter might be planning to file a lawsuit in the future.

Twitter has not gone after other Twitter-like social networks that include Bluesky and Mastodon, but Threads is a newly-launched app that is built off of Instagram, giving it a notable user base from its debut. Mastodon and Bluesky have far fewer users. In February, for example, Mastodon had 1.4 million active users, while Bluesky had 50,000 users at the end of April.

Following Twitter’s accusations, Meta’s communications director Andy Stone said that no one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee. “That’s just not a thing,” he wrote.

Apple Studios has revealed a first-look image from Brad Pitt’s hotly anticipated Formula One feature. The drama is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment and seven-time F1 champion Sir Lewis Hamilton’s Dawn Apollo Films banner.

Abid Rahman for The Hollywood Reporter:

The untitled film, which also features Snowfall star Damson Idris in a lead role, is set in the world of elite motor racing. Pitt stars as a former F1 driver who returns to race for the fictional APXGP team, a middling outfit, alongside Idris’ character.

In June 2022, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the deal for Apple’s F1 feature was a potential game-changer in Hollywood. The unique deal, which calls for a wide theatrical release with a meaningful window, will have the creative team paid three ways: their upfront fees, hefty buyout fees and the theatrical backend. THR reported that instead of a token release in a few theaters or a day-and-date opening, the movie would have an exclusive — and global — run of at least 30 days (one source says it could even go as high as 60 days) before heading to the Apple TV+ platform.

The F1 feature is the second Apple starring vehicle for Pitt, with the Oscar-winning actor also appearing in Jon Watts’ upcoming thriller Wolves alongside George Clooney and Amy Ryan. Wolves was also subject to an intense bidding war among Hollywood’s studios and streamers.

MacDailyNews Take: Another big draw for Apple TV+ looms as the number of people who’d rather watch at home dwarfs the number who’ll first go see it at the movie theater.

Apple’s plan to launch a new Apple Watch Ultra model with a microLED display has taken another knock. It’s been reported this week that the device has hit manufacturing problems and is now unlikely to launch until 2026.

This isn’t the first setback to afflict the microLED Ultra. When it was first rumored (as recently as January), pundits predicted that the device would appear at the end of 2024. But by April (based on a subscribers-only tweet from reliable displays expert Ross Young) this had been pushed back to 2025.

Now research company TrendForce (via Korean-language site The Elec) says it won’t be here until the first quarter of 2026 at the earliest. In other words, within the space of six months, the expected launch has moved back by around 15.

TrendForce cites manufacturing problems for the more cautious estimate. Apple has yet to find a way to bring down manufacturing costs for mass production, despite having already invested more than $1 billion in this field. The Apple Watch Ultra would be the first Apple device to use a microLED display. The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros and 12.9-inch iPad use mini-LED tech and the upcoming Vision Pro has higher-end micro-OLED displays.

This doesn’t mean we will be waiting until 2026 for the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra. At one stage it was believed that microLED would be part of the package when Apple launched the second-gen version of the Ultra, back when that device was expected to follow the same biennial upgrade cadence as the Apple Watch SE. But just as microLED has been pushed back, the second Ultra has somehow come closer. It now seems certain that the second Ultra will arrive long before microLED does–perhaps as soon as this fall–and that this major screen upgrade will appear in the third- or even fourth-gen model.

All current Apple Watch models are based on OLED screens. Switching to microLED brings numerous advantages: the panels are thinner, brighter, and more power-efficient, and have faster response times. But they present technical difficulties, as we are seeing.

Threads, Meta's alternative to Twitter, has officially launched. But users thinking of installing the social media app just to check it out should be aware that you can't delete your Threads profile without also deleting your Instagram account.

Me

Threads, Meta’s alternative to Twitter, has officially launched. But users thinking of installing the social media app just to check it out should be aware that you can’t delete your Threads profile without also deleting your Instagram account.

Meta describes Threads as “Instagram’s text-based conversation app,” and there’s purpose in that precise phrasing. It doesn’t just mean that your Instagram username ports over to Threads and that you have the option to follow the same people you follow on Instagram. It also means that once you create a Threads profile, there’s no way to delete it unless you’re prepared to delete your Instagram account wholesale.

If you want out of Threads but you’re not prepared to delete your Instagram account, the only other alternative is to “temporarily” deactivate your Threads profile. This is Meta’s way of encouraging you to keep both. Threads’ privacy policy makes it pretty clear: “You may deactivate your Threads profile at any time, but your Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account.”

I deactivated my threads account already but it turns out you can’t delete your threads account *without also deleting your Instagram account* so maybe just don’t sign up!

— emily hughes ✨ (@emilyhughes) July 6, 2023

The moral of the story for Instagram fans is that if you don’t want an eternal Threads profile on Meta’s servers, then don’t sign up to Threads. If it’s too late for that, the less-than-ideal alternative is to deactivate your Threads profile, which you can do by following the steps below.

In the Threads app, tap the profile icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Tap the two-line menu icon in the top right of your profile.

Tap the Account icon, then tap Deactivate profile.

Tap Deactivate Threads profile, then confirm your choice.

When you deactivate your profile, your posts and interactions with others’ posts won’t be visible until you reactivate your profile. That said, those posts will still live on Threads’ servers unless you manually delete them one by one.

If you change your mind after deactivation, you can re-activate your Threads profile simply by logging back into the Threads app using your Instagram account. Just bear in mind that you can only deactivate your profile once a week.

Apple’s next generation of iPhones could have up to a 15% boost in battery life, according to an unconfirmed leak. The report from ITHome suggests that the iPhone 15 base model could see a 15% increase in battery life, while the iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max could see improvements of 12%, 12%, and 11%, respectively.

Jacklyn Dallas, a video creator who reviews tech products on her YouTube channel, NothingButTech, told Insider that battery packs are one area of smartphones that haven’t seen much innovation relative to other software developments. That means any updates could present an opportunity for Apple.

The tech giant’s most recent release, the iPhone 14, offered marginal increases in battery life, they were not as significant as the jumps seen with the previous iPhone 13 model.

To be sure, the initial source said the information may not be fully accurate. The news broke via a private message on ITHome Weibo, and the source claimed to be an insider of Foxconn.

MacDailyNews Take: Importantly, Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro series is expected to be powered by the new A17 bionic chip built using TSMC’s 3nm process technology which will offer significantly greater efficiency and longer battery life, even if the battery capacities were to remain unchanged from the iPhone 14 Pro models.

Seven tech giants, including Apple, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, have said they meet the European Union’s new criteria for “gatekeepers,” which means they will be subject to stricter regulations.

Reuters:

Samsung and TikTok owner ByteDance also unexpectedly said they would meet the criteria, although TikTok disputed whether it should be included on the list. Booking.com said it expected to fall into the gatekeeper category next year.

Under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) which came into force in November, companies with more than 45 million monthly active users and a 75-billion-euro ($82 billion) market capitalisation are considered gatekeepers providing a core platform service.

Companies labelled as such will be required to make their messaging apps interoperate with rivals and let users to decide which apps to pre-install on their devices.

The European Commission did not provide details of the companies’ core online services subject to DMA rules.

It will confirm the gatekeeper designation by Sept. 6 after checking the data provided by the companies, which will then have six months to comply with the DMA rules.

MacDailyNews Take: It will be interesting to see how Apple handles its Messages app and its iMessage instant messaging service under the DMA especially how much “interoperability” the DMA will ultimately demand and how much Apple will ultimately provide. Expect Apple to fight to preserve iMessage’s end-to-end encryption and Messages features that are unique to Apple products.

An important deadline just passed for the biggest tech platform companies in the world to notify the European Union (EU) that they are gatekeepers under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Seven companies have officially acknowledged they meet the criteria: Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Apple, ByteDance (TikTok), Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp), Microsoft, and Samsung. Companies on the list have a market capitalization of over €75 billion ($82 billion) and own a social platform or app that has at least 45 million monthly users or 10,000 active business users.

The statement published by EU commissioner Thierry Breton says it “will now check their submissions and designate the gatekeepers for specific platform services by 6 September,” and after that, the companies will have just six months to comply with the DMA’s rules.

Reuters reports that TikTok parent company Bytedance disputed its placement on the list and noted that Booking.com informed regulators it expects to be on the list next year.

According to Breton, the new rules include several key items:

They will no longer be able to lock in users in their ecosystem.

They will no longer be able to decide which apps you need to have pre-installed on your devices; which app store you have to use.

They will not be able to “self-preference”: exploiting the advantage of being the gatekeeper by treating their own products and services more favorably.

Their messaging apps will have to interoperate with others.

7 companies have notified the Commission that they meet the #Gatekeepers thresholds under the Digital Markets Act (#DMA):

Alphabet
Amazon
Apple
ByteDance
Meta
Microsoft
Samsung

Following our review process, official designation will be announced no later than 6 September pic.twitter.com/1qr5Scly0S

— Thierry Breton (@ThierryBreton) July 4, 2023

Breaking the rules would put companies at risk of a fine of up to 10 percent of its total worldwide turnover, 20 percent for repeat offenders, and repeat failures could lead the commission to “open a market investigation and, if necessary, impose behavioural or structural remedies.”

Apple, which says the new law “will create unnecessary privacy and security vulnerabilities for our users,” has reportedly planned to allow third-party app stores in iOS 17, though with possible restrictions such as only allowing them in Europe or mandating security requirements.

We’re also seeing the beginning of new avenues for competition between the tech giants. Meta said last week it would allow users to download apps via Facebook ads in Europe.
