Apple’s iOS 17.2, currently in beta, but expected to be released to the public soon, delivers a new NameDrop-like feature to the Wallet app that allows iPhone users to quickly share boarding passes, movie tickets, and other Wallet app passes with other iPhone users.

Joe Rossignol for MacRumors:
‎

To use the feature, open the Wallet app and tap on the pass that you want to share. Then, hold your iPhone near the top of another iPhone, and a “Share” button will appear below the pass on your iPhone. Finally, tap on the “Share” button to send the pass to the other iPhone via AirDrop. Both iPhones must be updated to iOS 17.2.

While it is already possible to share many Wallet app passes via AirDrop, Messages, Mail, and more through the iOS sharing menu, this new feature aims to provide a quicker and more convenient method. It works similarly to NameDrop, an iOS 17 feature that lets users quickly share contact information by bringing two iPhones together.

‎
MacDailyNews Take: Apple’s iOS 17.2 beta release notes for developers describes the feature: “AirDrop improvements including expanded contact sharing options and the ability to share boarding passes, movie tickets, and other eligible passes by bringing two iPhones together.”

Tap-to-pay services like Apple Pay may soon no longer need the actual tapping part to work. That’s because NFC, the technology that enables you to pay at shops by touching your phone to a payment terminal, is getting new capabilities over the next next two to five years, such as a communications range boost, more powerful wireless charging for tiny devices like earbuds, and more (via Android Authority).

NFC, which stands for Near Field Communication, is inside thousands of devices today ranging from smartphones to video game-enhancing figurines. Now the body that decides how to standardize the technology, the NFC Forum, is outlining key areas that will move NFC tech forward through 2028. The Forum is comprised of hundreds of companies, including Apple, Google, Huawei, Sony, NXP, and Qualcomm.

Image: Nintendo
Nintendo’s Amiibo figures use NFC, and perhaps future iterations with upgraded NFC won’t need this instructional on where exactly to make contact.

One of the friction points of using NFC tech is its incredibly short range. For an NFC connection to be successful, the devices need to be within 5mm of each other — which is short enough to make “contactless payments” a misnomer. The NFC Forum is looking to stretch that “four to six times” further, which would make it more like 30mm (or 1.18 inches).

With the added distance (and power), people taking public transit in places like New York City could more easily wave their hand bags on terminals instead of taking out their phones. And merchants can stress less about customers magic-wanding their smartphones around payment terminals hunting for the precise connection point.

The NFC Forum is also looking to increase wireless charging power from the 1W currently, to a more usable 3W. While that’s far less than the Qi standard’s max of 15W, it’s enough for the Forum to boast that “The change will bring wireless power and charging to new and smaller form factors, disrupting industrial design while defining new markets.” So, standards-based wireless charging of individual earbuds? Maybe!

The roadmap includes changes meant to make point-of-sale transactions easier, as well. Apple had enabled a Tap to Pay API last year that lets developers turn iPhones into payment terminals. Future NFC standards aim to make this functionality native so that businesses and individuals can receive payments anywhere.

In addition, the NFC Forum is looking to add a “multi purpose tap” that could do several actions in just one tap, like having all your crew’s tickets being allowed entry at a concert with just one tap instead of swiping to the next one by one. And NFC is planning for a feature that can act like an info drop on the device it’s attached to, specifically to share its composition for easier recycling instructions.

The NFC Forum will be presenting its development roadmap during a public webinar on June 27th.

If Apple’s mixed reality headset is going to succeed, it’s going to be because of the apps. On Monday, Apple will take the stage at its 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference to talk about FaceTime and Apple Books and all the other cool built-in stuff you’ll be able to do with its ski goggles strapped to your face. But if it can’t get third-party developers on board, and those developers don’t figure out how to build life-changingly great stuff for those goggles, the Reality Pro (or whatever it’s called) doesn’t stand a chance.

Apple knows this better than anyone, of course. The iPhone took off when apps like Instagram and Uber showed what you could do with a camera and a GPS in your pocket. The iPad became a creative tool because creative people kept building cool stuff to do on such a huge touchscreen. And developers at places like Nike and Strava did more to make the case for the Apple Watch than Apple’s Walkie Talkie app and weird heartbeat-sending thing ever did. Apple’s product strategy for 15 years has been to make the coolest gadget it can, show it to developers, and ask them what they think.

To make the headset really work, though, Apple’s going to need more than just apps. Because a good headset is more than just a big screen; it’s a new way of interacting with a gadget and with apps. That means that 15 years after the launch of the App Store, when Apple turned the iPhone into the app machine it is now, it’s going to have to reboot the whole idea of what an app is and how it works. And it won’t be easy.

An ocean of icons

By and large, every app is a universe unto itself. The whole structure of the app ecosystem is such that the first step of every process is to open an app. There’s no command line equivalent through which you can execute tasks across the whole system; even things like search work far better in apps than across all of iOS.

Apple has been trying to change this for years. Every year, almost without fail, Apple has a Big New Idea About Apps. At WWDC, in addition to all the changes to Reminders and new locations for URL bars in Safari, Apple nearly always tries to change the way you interact with apps and they interact with each other. Want proof? Here’s an incomplete list of the Big New Ideas About Apps Apple has shown off at WWDC since the iPhone launched:

2008 (iPhone OS 2.0): The App Store

2009 (iPhone OS 3.0): In-app purchases, push notifications

2010 (iOS 4): Multitasking

2011 (iOS 5): The notification center

2012 (iOS 6): Siri, the share sheet

2013 (iOS 7): Lock screen notifications, Spotlight search

2014 (iOS 8): Continuity, Handoff, widgets

2015 (iOS 9): 3D Touch, Proactive Intelligence

2016 (iOS 10): iMessage App Store

2018 (iOS 12): Shortcuts

2020 (iOS 14): App Clips, homescreen widgets

2021 (iOS 15): Focus modes

2022 (iOS 16): Lock screen widgets, Live Activities, Dynamic Island

If you squint a little, you can see the larger vision here. Apple imagines an app ecosystem in which data flows freely between devices: you take a picture here, edit it there, share it over there, save it in that place, all with a few drags and drops. It wants to make apps work between and across your devices. You should be able to access your apps and the data inside them from just about anywhere on your device. In Apple’s wildest dreams, apps aren’t each their own universe; they’re like stars in a solar system, each one part of a larger coherent thing.

In Apple’s wildest dreams, apps aren’t each their own universe

A few of Apple’s own apps are good examples of how this could work. Wallet pulls all your tickets and boarding passes from other apps into one place, no matter where they came from. Home aggregates your many devices across many ecosystems and lets you run your whole smart home in one place. Files provides a file storage system that is theoretically available to any app anywhere. Live Photos and Live Text are system-level features, not apps you have to open just to accomplish a single task.

But when it comes to the rest of the App Store, what have we actually gotten out of all those big ideas? Shortcuts are hugely useful but far too complicated for most users; Siri is mostly just annoying; App Clips and iMessage apps never really took off; I have yet to see an app that makes actual use of the Dynamic Island; 3D Touch is already long gone. In 15 years, for all intents and purposes, apps have only really fundamentally changed in one way: thanks to push notifications and widgets, they can now send you information without needing you to open the app.

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge
The Dynamic Island hasn’t yet turned into a staple of great apps.

To some extent, it’s just business. Many developers prefer to keep users inside their app as long as possible to juice ad impressions and increase engagement. And Apple certainly has little incentive to blow up the app model as long as it keeps taking a hefty cut of everyone’s subscription fees. “I think they’ve tried to approach stuff like, ‘Hey, here’s a new platform. We’re not just going to put a grid of apps on it. What’s the next level of that?’” says Ryan Jones, a developer of the popular Flighty app. “And so far the magnetic pull of apps has pulled them back towards a grid of apps.”

Maybe that’s why, when I asked a bunch of developers what they’re looking for at this year’s WWDC, their answers were so straightforward. “Most of my wishlist things are more pragmatic and practical,” said Greg Pierce, who builds apps like Drafts and Tally through his company, Agile Tortoise. He said he tries not to even make a wishlist anymore — better to just wait and see.

Pierce and a few others said they’re most hoping to see improvements in SwiftUI, Apple’s cross-platform development system. “Actually writing cross platform code with it is painful,” Pierce said. “You end up having to branch a lot of logic to work one way on one platform and one on the other, stuff that could be improved.” Marcos Tanaka, who builds apps like Play and MusicHarbor, echoed the sentiment. “It is a fantastic framework that has genuinely improved my experience developing for Apple platforms,” he said. “Still, sometimes I stumble upon some bugs and limitations that get in the way, so SwiftUI improvements are always welcome.”

The iPhone in particular is such a mature platform that it’s almost risky to try new things. There are so many users, with so much history and muscle memory, that developers might be foolish to try and break paradigms. Even the platform itself makes it hard to move forward. “You’re deploying an app that has to be backward-compatible several OS versions,” Pierce said, “so you can’t take advantage of those new features.”

Greater than its parts

So far, the rumors and reporting we’ve heard about WWDC 2023 sound like more iterative improvements, particularly for the iPhone. The Biggest New Idea About Apps might be interactive widgets — what if you could use an app without opening an app? — but in general, it sounds like a year of improvements rather than radical changes.

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge
Headsets break the whole app model — they shouldn’t just be app machines, and they shouldn’t have homescreens.

Except a headset demands radical change. Apple has made clear that it doesn’t want to build a full-on metaverse, but it also shouldn’t just turn the platform into a bunch of siloed apps. An all-encompassing device like this just won’t work if you’re constantly switching between apps every time you need new information. Apple has reportedly spent years on supporting hand tracking, facial expression recognition, iris scanning, and other biometric and real-world tools. You’re telling me we’re going to get something called the “Reality Dial,” but I’m still stuck with a dock full of app icons? That just doesn’t feel right.

Apple has made clear that it doesn’t want to build a full-on metaverse, but it also shouldn’t just turn the platform into a bunch of siloed apps

The interaction model of the future can’t be pinching the air in front of you to mimic tapping on a touchscreen. I’m definitely not interested in having to download, log in, set up, and figure out a new app every time I want to try something new. Apps are going to need to be more modular, showing you just the parts you need as you walk down the street or start a new FaceTime call. They’ll have to be faster and simpler because nobody wants to tweak settings on their face. App developers have spent decades building software for rectangles of various shapes and sizes. But in a world filled with headsets, there are no more rectangles.

Changing the way developers see their apps will be tricky. But with the AI onslaught coming fast and a headset forcing users to use a new device in wholly new ways, this is the moment for Apple to come up with a better, more integrated, more natural way to access and interact with information on their devices. To borrow a Steve Jobs-ism: if you see a homescreen, they blew it.

Of the big Apple events of the year, WWDC is the most reliable: In each of the past 16 Junes, like clockwork, Apple has held a big get-together for its developer partners and announced a raft of important software updates. The September iPhone launch and the March/April spring event (which didn’t happen in 2023) seem almost unpredictable by comparison.

In this article, we list the major announcements (and some of the smaller titbits) you can expect to hear about at WWDC 2023 this June. Some of these–updates to the five big Apple operating systems, most obviously–are as predictable as the timing of the event. But we reckon Apple will spring a few surprises too.

WWDC 2023 will kick off on Monday, June 5 and the entire conference and its workshops will be held online. Apple will have a “special in-person experience” for some developers and students to watch the keynote live at Apple Park—but the event will be streamed live for the world to watch.

On May 10 2023 Apple announced plans to bring Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to the iPad Pro, which is the kind of news we’d have expected Apple to reserve for the WWDC event. Does Apple’s small announcement a month before indicate that there will be big news at WWDC itself? Read on to find out what’s in store.

What is WWDC?

WWDC stands for the Worldwide Developers Conference and is dedicated to the third-party software developers that create apps for Apple’s platforms: iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc. Apple invites developers to participate in a series of classes, workshops, and sessions to learn about the system-wide changes coming to the major software platforms in the coming year so they can update their apps.

WWDC is a week-long gathering, beginning with a keynote speech on Monday morning. It generally happens in early June, although the Covid pandemic led to a slight delay in 2020. In reality, while devs are at the heart of the event, it’s also a press event that Apple uses to announce its software plans and potentially some new Macs and other products to the world.

WWDC date: When is WWDC 2023?

WWDC 2023 starts on Monday, June 5 with a keynote event that will start at 10 a.m. in California. If you are wondering what time will the WWDC keynote start where you are it translates to:

US: at 10 a.m. (PDT), 11 a.m. (MDT), noon (CDT), 1 p.m. (EDT)

Canada: at 2 p.m. (ADT)

UK: at 6 p.m. (BST)

Europe: at 7 p.m. (CEST)

India: at 10.30 p.m. (IST)

Singapore and China: next day at 1 a.m.

Japan: next day at 2 a.m. (JST)

Australia: next day at 1 a.m. (AWST), 2.30 a.m. (ACST), 3 a.m. (AEST)

New Zealand: next day at 5 a.m. (NZST)

How to watch WWDC 2023

Apple will live stream the opening keynote for all on its website (check Apple’s events page) and elsewhere, such as on YouTube and on the Apple TV app. This means you’ll be able to watch the presentation on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and even PC.

Some lucky developers will be able to watch the event live in person, but there will be a lot of competition for those tickets which will be randomly selected from those to apply and aren’t transferable.

Current Apple Developer Enterprise Program members

Lucky applicants will be notified of their success in getting a ticket by April 5.

WWDC keynote tickets have been free and randomly distributed for the past few years, but previously cost $1,599 for developers to attend and sold out very quickly. In 2022 developers were invited to watch the keynote live at Apple Park, though the event was still prerecorded. The same setup will be used in 2023.

Even without a ticket, all registered Apple developers get online access to session videos, slides, and sample code throughout the week.

WWDC 2023: Software releases

WWDC is all about the software, so we can be certain that Apple will reveal details of its upcoming operating system updates for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, HomePod, and Apple Watch. Those updates will then be issued to developers as a beta to test, then a few weeks later a public beta will start. Eventually, the new software will be available for everyone to download in the fall (usually September for iOS/iPadOS/watchOS and October for macOS). Here’s what to expect:

iOS 17

The headliner of the event simply because of the sheer number of iPhone owners across the planet. If you’ve got an iPhone made within the past five years, you’ll likely be able to install the new version of iOS when it’s released in the fall of 2023.

Among the rumors we’ve heard about iOS 17 are that it will mainly focus on performance improvements but still bring enhancements to the Control Center, Dynamic Island, and Spotlight search, as well as updated versions of the Camera and Health apps.

But before then, there’s a whole beta-testing cycle to get through. iOS 17 will be announced at WWDC 2023, then released as a developer beta (for registered app developers only) almost immediately after the keynote. Developers will then be able to install the iOS beta and a few weeks later a public beta version will be made available for all users who want to try the new features. Our advice is to be cautious and prepared for serious flaws with the beta software–it might even brick your device.

Over the course of the next few months, the developer and public betas will go through a testing process where features will be tweaked, changed, fixed, and updated until we reach the finished iOS 17.0 public release, most likely in September.

Read all the rumors and our hopes for iOS 17 in our iOS 17 guide.

iPadOS 17

The accompanying update for iPad owners, iPadOS 17 is likely to incorporate most of the new features of iOS 17 but adapted to a larger-screen interface. When Apple’s two mobile operating systems split in 2019 they were similar in most respects, but the iPad version is heading steadily into its own realm.

Among the new features likely to arrive in iPadOS 17 are the customizable Lock Screen released in iOS 16 and other smaller enhancements. It has also been reported that the update will drop support for the 1st-gen iPad Pro (9.7- and 12.9-inch) and the 5th-gen iPad.

In 2022, Apple released iPad OS 16 a month after iOS 16, so it’s possible that the two versions don’t arrive at the same time.

Read all the rumors and our hopes for iPadOS 17 in our iPadOS 17 guide.

macOS 14

What’s Apple got in store for its follow-up to macOS Ventura? We’ll find out at WWDC 2023.

This version will be numbered macOS 14, but what is less predictable is the California landmark Apple will name the version after. So far we’ve had: Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey, and Ventura. It’s been reported that macOS 14 will be more of a maintenance release than a feature-packed one, so it’s possible that Apple chooses a place near Ventura. Based on the trademarks Apple has applied for, macOS Rincon or Skyline or likely.

Read all the rumors and our hopes for macOS 14 in our macOS 14 guide.

watchOS 10

The new operating system for the Apple Watch will be revealed at WWDC 2023. This is more of a niche than the iPhone, iPad, and Mac updates discussed above but could bring more health and fitness features to Apple Watch owners around the world. In April, Mark Gurman reported that watchOS 10 will have “notable changes to the user interface” and “should be a fairly extensive upgrade.”

Last year’s watchOS 9 update was available for those running a Series 4 or later. If you’ve got a Series 4 or later, hopefully, the same will be true of watchOS 10.

Read all the rumors and our hopes for watchOS 10 in our watchOS 10 guide.

tvOS 17

The lowest-profile of the five big Apple operating systems, tvOS is the platform that runs on the Apple TV.

Probably the biggest addition in last year’s tvOS 16 update was support for Matter-compatible devices and support for more gaming controllers. What will we get this year? You’ll find out at WWDC.

HomePod software version 17

Apple is also likely to update the software on the HomePod and HomePod mini alongside the other operating systems. In 2022 Apple introduced HomePod Software Version 16 which didn’t bring a lot of new features at the time, but a later update: HomePod Software Version 16.3 brought temperature and humidity sensing to the HomePod mini and more. We may hear more about Apple’s plans for the HomePod during the WWDC event–especially as Apple is rumored to planning big changes to the HomePod in 2024.

WWDC 2023: Hardware releases

WWDC tends to be a software-focused event, but Apple has often found time during its WWDC keynotes to launch hardware products too. The first few iPhone revisions—iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPhone 4S—were all released at WWDC, and the HomePod had its unveiling at the event in 2017 as well.

However, the event has focused on Mac releases in recent years. Apple unveiled the iMac Pro in 2017 alongside updates to the iMac, MacBook, and MacBook Pro, and announced a new Mac Pro and the Pro Display XDR in June 2019. At WWDC 2020, Apple announced the transition from Intel to Apple silicon, and WWDC 2022 saw Apple launch the M2 chip in the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

What’s in the hardware pipeline for Apple right now? There are plenty of WWDC rumors, but what’s really coming? Here’s what we hope to see:

Reality Pro headset

This is the big one. Apple has been rumored to launch a new AR/VR headset for years, and it is finally expected to arrive sometime in 2023, and there are strong rumors that the WWDC keynote will be the big day. With an extremely high price tag, the device is expected to be mostly geared toward developers, so WWDC would be a great opportunity for Apple to debut the new device, even if it doesn’t launch until later in the year.

The headset is rumored to look like a pair of ski goggles, with 8K displays, numerous cameras, and an external battery pack, with a price tag that could top $3,000. However, it will be one of the most important product launches in years, as Apple looks beyond the iPhone into a whole new category of wearable devices. It’s expected to introduce an entirely new platform of apps and services geared toward an immersive experience

If Apple launches its headset, a major component of the presentation will be the rumored xrOS (extended reality OS). Apple will outline the major features, developer tools, and strategies for the operating system, which is expected to focus on entertainment and communication.

Apple displayed this special Swift logo on its WWDC 2023 website.

Apple

On May 23, Apple updated its WWDC website with a new animation of the Swift logo morphing from 2D to 3D. Some think this is a big hint that Apple will showcase the headset.

Mac Pro

Over the years, new Mac Pro models have launched at WWDC and this year could be no different. By the time Apple takes the stage at the WWDC event, it will have been three years since it announced its plans to move from Intel to its own silicon, and the Mac Pro is the only Mac that hasn’t made the transition.

The latest Mac Pro rumors say the machine will have an M2 Ultra processor and a similar design to the current model. Rumors are unclear whether the high-end Mac will launch at WWDC, but the previous two models both made their debuts on the WWDC stage, so it’s a distinct possibility.

15-inch MacBook Air

Apple is said to be working on a larger version of the MacBook Air with a 15-inch display and we could see it at WWDC if it doesn’t arrive before then. We don’t know exactly what the rest of the machine will bring, but we expect it to be very similar to the current Air, possibly with the addition of an M2 Pro chip.

Mac Studio

With the launch of the M2 Ultra, Apple is rumored to give the Mac Studio a processor refresh. Little else is expected to change about the machine other than higher-end RAM and storage options.

iMac

By the time of the WWDC keynote, the 24-inch iMac will be more than two years old. A WWDC update would make sense, but the rumors are suggesting Apple is waiting for the M3 chip before it updates the iMac, so that new Mac may not launch until later in the year.

When Apple launched the Mac Studio in 2022 it also discontinued the 27-inch iMac, but that doesn’t mean that the large iMac is dead. In fact, Apple may have plans to bring back the larger iMac. Read the rumors about Apple’s plans for a 27-inch iMac Pro. However, while Apple is reportedly working on a 42-inch iMac with an OLED display, it’s likely going to launch in 2024 or 2025.

Update 5/23/2023: Apple has officially announced the WWDC keynote on June 5 at 10 a.m. PT. The company also sent invites to analysts, media, and special guests to attend the keynote at Apple Park.

Apple invites developers to participate in a series of classes, workshops, and sessions to learn about the system-wide changes coming the major software platforms in the coming year so they can update their apps.

(AEST)

If you want to be in with a chance of attending you need to Request to attend on the Apple Developer website. The deadline to made a request to attend the event is April 4 at 9 a.m. PDT. It is open to the following:

Current Apple Developer Program members

Apple Entrepreneur Camp alumni

Swift Student Challenge winners (2020 to 2022) – 2023 challenge applicants are included in a separate random selection process for winners, in early May Apple begun alerting the lucky few of their status as winners.

Current Apple Developer Enterprise Program members

Lucky applicants will be notified of their success in getting a ticket by April 5.

You can find out more about how to get tickets to WWDC in our FAQ.

WWDC keynote tickets have been free and randomly distributed for the past few years, but previously cost $1,599 for developers to attend and sold out very quickly. In 2022 developers were invited to watch the keynote live at Apple Park, though the event was still prerecorded. The same set up will be used in 2023.

Even without a ticket, all registered Apple developers get online access to session videos, slides, and sample code throughout the week.

Apple will share additional conference information in advance of WWDC23 through the Apple Developer app.

Based on the trademarks Apple has applied for, macOS Rincon or Skyline or likely.

However, it will be one of the most important product launches in years, as Apple looks beyond the iPhone into a whole new category of wearable device.

We don’t know exactly what the rest of the machine will bring, but we expect it to be very similar to the current Air, possibly with the addition of an M2 Pro chip.

Update 5/23/2023: Apple has officially announced the WWDC keynote on June 5 at 10 a.m. PT. The company also sent invites to analysts, media, and special guests to attend the keynote at Apple Park.

Apple invites developers to participate in a series of classes, workshops, and sessions to learn about the system-wide changes coming the major software platforms in the coming year so they can update their apps.

UK: at 6 p.m. (BST)

Europe: at 7 p.m. (CEST)

US: at 10 a.m. (PDT), 11 a.m. (MDT), noon (CDT), 1 p.m. (EDT)

Canada: at 2 p.m. (ADT)

However, it will be one of the most important product launches in years, as Apple looks beyond the iPhone into a whole new category of wearable device.

We don’t know exactly what the rest of the machine will bring, but we expect it to be very similar to the current Air, possibly with the addition of an M2 Pro chip.

Apple announced plans to turn the iPhone into your driver’s license in 2021. Plane tickets, movie passes, and credit cards were already digital. Now it was time to digitize government-issued identification cards.

So far, very few U.S. states let you add your driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet. However, there are more states without Wallet support where your iPhone can still become your driver’s license.

Apple’s yearly Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) is a hugely important event, second in significance only to the company’s iPhone launch each fall. WWDC is important because, at the opening keynote presentation, we get to hear what Apple has in store for its various operating systems, and therefore for the devices that run them. If you own an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or Apple TV, WWDC will be relevant to you, and we strongly recommend that you watch the keynote.

Fortunately you don’t need an invite. The keynote will be available online for everyone to watch live, or to stream later. We’ll embed the livestream once it’s available, so you can watch it here. There are other options too, and we outline these below.

If you’re interested in watching the keynote, here’s everything you need to know. You can read more about WWDC 2023, including the products we expect to launch, in a separate article.

When is the WWDC 2023 keynote?

The keynote kicks off WWDC at 10 a.m. PDT on June 5, 2023. The event will probably last about one to two hours. Here’s what that translates to around the world:

U.S.: 10 am (PDT); 11 am (MDT), noon (CDT), 1 pm (EDT)

Canada: 10 am (PDT); 11 am (MDT), noon (CDT), 1 pm EDT, 2 pm (ADT)

U.K.: 6 pm (BST)

Europe: 7 pm (CEST)

India: 10.30 pm (IST)

Singapore and China: June 6 at 1 am (CST)

Japan: June 6 at 2 am (JST)

Australia: June 6 at 1 am (AWST); 2.30 am (ACST); 3 am (AEST)

New Zealand: June 6 at 5 am (NZST)

How to watch the WWDC 2023 keynote

Apple will livestream the keynote presentation so anyone can watch, and we’ll embed the YouTube video above once it goes live. But there are other ways to watch the WWDC keynote depending on your device:

Watch on Apple’s YouTube channel.

Watch on Apple’s own website.

Watch via the TV app on an Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

In the past, Apple has also streamed the event live on Twitter. It doesn’t seem to be repeating this experiment, instead directing followers to apple.com, but there may well be tweets posted during the event.

When we get closer to the date of WWDC 2023 Apple’s special events page will have all the info you need, including the option to add it to your calendar.

How to watch the WWDC keynote on anything else…

Apple says other platforms may be able to access the stream using recent versions of Chrome or Firefox (MSE, H.264, and AAC required).

To watch, visit the Apple Events page.

How to watch the WWDC 2023 keynote at an Apple Store

In the past (pre-pandemic) local stores participated in broadcast events which the public was encouraged to sign up for on Apple’s website. Search for your local store to see if an event is happening.

Can I join WWDC 2023 sessions?

WWDC isn’t just the keynote. There are also in-depth sessions where developers can learn more about the various platforms and network with Apple staff and other members of the community. In the past, these sessions would have taken place in person; in the more recent past, Apple has allowed registered developers to access the WWDC sessions online. Keep an eye on Apple’s WWDC developer page for the latest details of the sessions running and how to access them. Developers are also encouraged to download the Apple Developer app for more information.

This year, as in 2022, there will be an in-person component to the event, and select invitees will be at Apple Park to watch the keynote ‘live’ (although the presentation will probably be a pre-recorded video). This means the lucky attendees will also get to attend the sessions in the flesh, along with a tour of the campus and other new perks. Tickets to this event were made available via a lottery, and this closed some time ago. If you haven’t heard by now, you’re not invited.

How to register as a developer

To register as a developer and gain access to the online components of WWDC (and qualify for the ticket lottery next year), head over to the Apple Developer Program registration page and click Start Your Enrollment at the bottom of the page. We run through the process here: How to join Apple’s beta program.

Registering as an Apple developer will give you access to support materials, and enable you to register Macs and iOS devices with Apple so you can use them to run testing software. You can sign in with your own Apple ID (recommended if you’re a single developer), or you can create an Apple ID just for the developer account (recommended if you’re developing for a company).

Apple charges $99 per year to be in the Developer Program. You may be able to have the fee waived if you meet the qualifications. Apple also provides of list of what tools and resources a membership provide.

Apple has released details of this year’s WWDC viewing event, which for the first time will include a tour of Apple Park, a series of extended developer sessions, and an apparently unmissable evening event.

Like WWDC 2022 and the iPhone 14 launch in September, this year’s WWDC will be a hybrid event: primarily a pre-recorded virtual presentation, but with an in-person component where select invitees gather for what is essentially a keynote watching party. Much as in-person visitors got some hands-on time with the new iPhones and Apple Watches in the September 2022 event, WWDC 2023 attendees will get to enjoy a bunch of special privileges.

As MacRumors reports, these privileges will include three components that haven’t been available previously: a special tour of Apple Park, an evening activity with food and drinks, and a series of extended developer sessions.

For the tour, which takes place in the afternoon of June 5, visitors will be given the choice of two routes: “Inside the Ring” (promising incredible views and a “fascinating” exhibit at The Gallery at Apple Park, which has not previously been open to visitors) or “Inner Meadow” (covering the orchards and pond, among other things).

That evening, attendees will be treated to a “Special Evening Activity” which the company says they “won’t want to miss.” Other than the fact that food and drink will be provided, details of this event are scarce.

Finally, developer sessions will take place the day after the keynote presentation, in the morning, afternoon and evening. These will each last two and a half hours and cover “some of the latest announcements” from the WWDC keynote. Obviously we don’t know what they will involve, but there’s a fair chance xrOS will be on the menu, along with the usual dishes of iOS, macOS and so on.

Sadly the event is limited to a small number of developers who entered a lottery and were lucky enough to win. If you didn’t hear from Apple by April 5, we’re sorry to say that your name is not on the list–and tickets are non-transferrable. Instead, you will need to watch WWDC 2023 the same way as the rest of us: online.
