First ‘Foundation’ episode streams free on YouTube on Monday

Ahead of the premiere of the second season of “Foundation,” Apple is giving everyone a chance to watch the first-ever episode of the epic, via a YouTube stream and Q&A session on Monday.

The second season of the Apple TV+ saga “Foundation” will be returning for another ten episodes on Friday, July 14, released weekly. To promote the show, Apple is making the first episode of the first season available to anyone to watch.

Amazon Prime Video and Netflix have been the dominant players in the U.S. subscription streaming VOD market for years, but that competitive edge appears to have been eclipsed in the second quarter of 2023. According to new data from JustWatch, which tracks the weekly streaming video habits of 20 million users across 59 markets, Amazon Prime Video ended the quarter with 21% market share, while Netflix had 20%. Apple held 7% share while Hulu finished with 11% share, behind Max (15%) and Disney+ (13%).

JustWatch also found that the newly rebranded HBO Max saw positive market share growth in Q2, gaining 1%. Paramount+ also saw a 1% increase in market share. On the other hand, Disney+ and Hulu saw 1% declines in market shares, respectively.

The data suggests that the U.S. subscription streaming VOD market is becoming increasingly competitive, with a number of players vying for market share. It will be interesting to see how the market evolves in the coming quarters.

Apple TV+’s adult animated series ‘Strange Planet’ premieres August 9th

On Thursday, Apple TV+ announced the new 10-episode adult animated series “Strange Planet” will make its global debut on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. Based on the bestselling graphic novel and social media phenomenon of the same name, “Strange Planet” is a hilarious and perceptive look at a distant world not unlike our own.

Adult animated series “Strange Planet” premieres August 9, 2023 on Apple TV+.

Set in a whimsical world of cotton candy pinks and purples, relatable blue beings explore the absurdity of everyday human traditions. New episodes will debut weekly on Wednesdays through the season finale on September 27, 2023.

There’s a lot of sci-fi streaming this summer

It’s already been a pretty eventful summer for science fiction fans. Last week saw the finale of Apple’s post-apocalyptic series Silo, Strange New Worlds season 2 is keeping Star Trek going through August, and Disney Plus is still in the midst of Secret Invasion, its alien conspiracy offshoot of the MCU. Oh, and there’s the return of Black Mirror. On top of all of that, there are also a number of series making their debut in the coming weeks and months — so many, in fact, that you might need a little help plotting out your precious free time. So here’s a handy list to make life a little easier.

Foundation season 2

Apple TV Plus – July 14th

Apple’s attempt at adapting Foundation got off to a slow start, but by the end of season 1 the sci-fi epic showed plenty of promise. The second season takes place a century later, and with much of the exposition out of the way, will hopefully be a little more exciting. It premieres on July 14th, with new episodes dropping on Fridays.

Futurama season 11

Hulu – July 24th

The return of Futurama has been a long time coming, but the 10 episode season is finally premiering later this month. It may technically be a show about the future, but as always, it looks like the show will be primarily exploring modern day issues through a retrofuturistic lens. New episodes will be hitting Hulu on Mondays.

Invasion season 2

Apple TV Plus – August 23rd

It’s the summer of invasions, it seems. Apple’s own take on the genre returns in August, with a season that promises to get right into the war between humans and their alien visitors. Season 1 chronicled the early days of the invasion from multiple perspectives, but the first images from season 2 make it look like things will get a bit more intense — and full of action. It premieres on August 23rd, with weekly episodes dropping every Wednesday.

Disney Plus – August 23rd

The latest Star Wars spinoff puts the focus on Rosario Dawson’s former Jedi Knight, who viewers might remember from The Mandalorian, where she had the important task of revealing Grogu’s name. She returns for the new show, which follows the character “as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.” It debuts on August 23rd with new episodes on Wednesdays.

Loki season 2

Disney Plus – October 6th

OK, calling this summer is a stretch, but here on the east coast it can still be pretty muggy in October, so I’m counting it. We don’t know much about season 2, but the original run of Loki helped kick off the MCU diving headfirst into the multiverse, so it’ll likely get pretty weird. It starts streaming on October 6th, presumably meaning new episodes will drop on Fridays.

Welcome to our weekly Apple Breakfast column, which includes all the Apple news you missed last week in a handy bite-sized roundup. We call it Apple Breakfast because we think it goes great with a Monday morning cup of coffee or tea, but it’s cool if you want to give it a read during lunch or dinner hours too.

The only way is upsell

One of the quirkier stories we covered last week centered on a simple Velcro strap.

Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro headset, you see, is rather heavy, and the company seems to have addressed possible issues with comfort by adding on an extra strap that goes over the top of the user’s head. But this strap is depicted nowhere in the press photos, and (according to the Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman) is likely to cost extra on top of the standard $3,499 price tag.

If you spend that sort of money on a product, you’d hope that comfort would be priced in. (And it’s entirely possible, we should stress, that it will be. For now this is merely a rumor.) But the idea that the strap won’t be included in the box is sadly compatible with Apple’s broader strategy in recent years. Apple has become the king of the upsell.

It all started, for me at least, with the charger. In 2020 Apple made the decision to stop including a power adapter with new iPhones, using the pretext that most customers already owned one, and that they were all ending up in landfill. Handy, then, that the move also enabled Apple to reduce the size of boxes and cut costs without lowering the price. And of course Apple will still happily sell you an adapter for an extra $19 if you haven’t got one lying around. The company also stopped including EarPods in iPhone boxes, which means more AirPods sales.

To be clear, I’m not saying the environmental justification was entirely disingenuous. But I do strongly suspect that Apple found a genuinely worthwhile idea more appealing because it could be used to squeeze out bigger profits. If the company sincerely wanted to reduce tech waste in landfill, after all, it would make its phones compatible with a global connection standard rather than a proprietary one before being forced to do so by regulatory pressure. But proprietary cables and chargers are better for upsell.

In 2022, Apple went all-out on the upsell strategy. It wasn’t enough for customers to spend $799 on a new iPhone 14; the company gave that device a year-old processor and generally did all it could to push customers who could possibly afford it to get the $999 14 Pro instead. (In our review, we called the 14 “basically an iPhone 13s.”) Similarly, the Apple Watch Series 8 was barely an improvement on its predecessor–why bother with the Series 8, when you’ve got the Apple Watch Ultra to push–and the AirPods Pro were heavily pushed over the standard AirPods. Every company wants you to buy their most expensive models, but for Apple that year it became an obvious and calculated strategy to an extent never seen before.

It’s difficult to argue with decisions made by a company that just touched a $3 trillion market cap (again). But this sort of thing–gouging out an extra $400 for wheels, when your customer has already shelled out $6,999 for a Mac Pro–might not be wise in the long term. It can get people’s backs up, eroding goodwill towards your brand, but more importantly, it makes your entry-level products seem a bit, well, rubbish. And those who can’t afford the iPhone 14 Pro or the Apple Watch Ultra or the Vision Strap Plus might decide to give up on the idea entirely and spend their money elsewhere.

Thanks to the readers who got in touch about last week’s Siri-bashing column. I was reassured to discover that some of you are even angrier about the state of Apple’s error-prone personal assistant than I am.

Richard Raymond-Smith, for example, complained bitterly about Siri’s apparent regression. It used to be able to respond to natural-language queries about a journey’s ETA, he notes, but now unhelpfully replies along the lines of “Here’s what I found on the web about ETA…” That’s a big fail, Siri.

Robert Williams, meanwhile, finds it “mystifying that Apple continues to sully its reputation for excellent products by muddling along with a product that is VASTLY inferior to, say, Alexa,” and ponders why any of the company’s software engineers would willingly work on Siri, given the embarrassment factor when revealing this in conversation. And Gus Pistolis throws down a challenge: “How do we mount a grassroots effort to get Apple to create a better if not new Siri?” The campaign starts here!

Apple TV+ today unveiled the premiere date and a gripping first look at season two of its ambitious series “Invasion,” which will return globally on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.

The second season of “Invasion” premieres globally on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 on Apple TV+.

From Academy Award-nominated and two-time Emmy Award-nominated producer Simon Kinberg (“X-Men” films, “Deadpool” films, “The Martian”) and David Weil (“Citadel”), and executive produced by Boat Rocker, “Invasion” is a sweeping, character-driven science fiction drama series that follows an alien invasion through different perspectives around the world. “Invasion” will debut with the first episode of its ten episode second season, followed by one new episode weekly, every Wednesday through October 25, 2023, on Apple TV+.

Nielsen: Apple TV+ viewers watched 1.24 billion minutes worth of ‘Ted Lasso’ in season finale week

The Apple TV+ Emmy-winning comedy series “Ted Lasso” has topped a billion minutes of viewing for the first time on Nielsen’s charts.

The season three (and potential series) finale of Ted Lasso delivered record streaming numbers for Apple TV+.

Viewers watched 1.24 billion minutes’ worth of the Emmy-winning comedy for the week of May 29-June 4 — the first time any show on Apple’s streaming service has topped a billion minutes. The season three finale, released May 31, accounted for 529 million of those minutes (about 42.5 percent of the total), which Nielsen says is the highest weekly total for a single episode of Ted Lasso.

Since it premiered in August 2020, Ted Lasso has drawn more than 25 billion minutes of viewing in the United States, per Nielsen. Through June 4, the season two finale was the biggest single episode at 960 million minutes — a total that the season three closer seems likely to pass, given that it got more than halfway there in a single week.

MacDailyNews Take: Yes another reason why the chance is high that more Ted Lasso is coming in the future.
