Coming in iOS 18 this fall, Apple’s “Vehicle Motion Cues” is a new experience for iPhone and iPad that can help reduce motion sickness for passengers in moving vehicles.

Research shows that motion sickness is commonly caused by a sensory conflict between what a person sees and what they feel, which can prevent some users from comfortably using iPhone or iPad while riding in a moving vehicle.

With Vehicle Motion Cues, animated dots on the edges of the screen represent changes in vehicle motion to help reduce sensory conflict without interfering with the main content. Using sensors built into iPhone and iPad, Vehicle Motion Cues recognizes when a user is in a moving vehicle and responds accordingly. The feature can be set to show automatically on iPhone, or can be turned on and off in Control Center.

Brooke Steinberg for The New York Post:

Essentially, the dots will trick the brain into synchronizing the handheld device and the moving environment.

And, crucially, the dots are small enough that you don’t have to worry about them interfering with the content you’re looking at.

The update is part of a larger release of accessibility features on Apple devices, including Eye Tracking — a feature that will allow users with physical disabilities to control their iPhone or iPad with their eyes.

Meanwhile, a feature called Music Haptics will make songs more accessible, giving a new way for users who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music.

Elsewhere, Vocal Shortcuts will allow users to assign a custom sound that Siri can understand to launch shortcuts and perform tasks.

Additionally, Listen for Atypical Speech is a feature that will allow the device to learn to recognize user speech patterns, allowing for a wider range of speech recognition.
