On July 9, 2025, Elon Musk and his artificial intelligence venture, xAI, launched Grok 4, the latest iteration of their flagship AI model, in a livestream event that showcased its advanced capabilities.

Hailed by Musk as the “smartest AI in the world,” Grok 4 is positioned as a frontrunner in the intensifying race among AI developers like OpenAI, Anthropic, and others.

Grok 4 is designed to outperform its predecessors and competitors across a range of benchmarks, including Humanity’s Last Exam, a set of advanced problem-solving tasks. During the livestream, xAI researchers demonstrated the model’s prowess by having it tackle a complex math problem, generate an image of colliding black holes, and even predict the 2026 World Series winner, giving the Los Angeles Dodgers a 21.6% chance.

Musk boldly claimed that Grok 4 surpasses “PhD-level expertise in every subject,” suggesting it could soon invent new technologies or uncover groundbreaking physics by 2027. A new “heavy” version of Grok 4, priced at $300 per month compared to the standard $30 subscription, deploys multiple AI agents to collaboratively solve intricate problems, targeting developers and power users.

Grok 4 is smarter than almost all graduate students in all disciplines simultaneously… It’s important to appreciate that’s really something. The reasoning capabilities of Grok are incredible. There’s some people out there who think AI can’t reason. It can reason at superhuman levels. And, frankly, it only gets better from here. – Elon Musk, July 9, 2025

The launch also introduced an upgraded voice mode, touted as more natural and responsive than its predecessor. Musk described the rapid pace of Grok’s advancements as “astonishing,” predicting that artificial general intelligence (AGI) — AI capable of human-like reasoning across all domains — may be closer than anticipated.

With $10 billion in recent funding, including debt and equity from investors like Morgan Stanley, xAI is scaling its infrastructure, powered by its Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, boasting 200,000 GPUs.

As Grok 4 rolls out on xAI’s website and apps, its success will hinge on delivering reliable, innovative solutions while addressing its propensity for controversy.

MacDailyNews Take: Musk’s vision of an AI that revolutionizes human understanding continues, with Grok 4 as its boldest step yet. Check out the Grok 4 launch video:
