iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max feature a new thermal management system includes an Apple-designed vapor chamber, delivering exceptional performance.

Apple is working on a vapor chamber, similar to those found in iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, to improve cooling and performance in an iPad Pro slated for as early as 2027.

Mark Gurman for Bloomberg News:

One of the best new features in Apple Inc.’s iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max is the vapor chamber, a liquid-cooling system that helps tame the heat generated by the smartphones’ powerful chips.

The vapor chamber replaces the need for a fan — like those found in the MacBook Pro and Vision Pro — and allows for higher performance. That’s because there’s less throttling, where the operating system slow downs the processor to make sure it doesn’t overheat. Now that Apple’s iPhone chips are nearly as powerful as laptop versions, this feature has become critical.

A tablet has more surface area than an iPhone, making it easier to dissipate heat. But the iPad Pro also can occasionally hit its limits and overheat — especially as demands on the device grow. People increasingly use it to handle heavy-duty media editing and artificial intelligence applications, and the iPadOS software now allows for more advanced, Mac-like multitasking.

Given all that, a vapor chamber in the iPad Pro — which is even thinner than the iPad Air — is on the company’s road map. Apple is now working on the feature, with plans to integrate it as soon as the next round of updates. The company is on an 18-month upgrade cycle for the iPad Pro, suggesting that the vapor chamber could be added around spring 2027.

MacDailyNews Note: The Apple-designed vapor chamber in iPhone 17 Pro and the flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max enhances heat dissipation and performance. Deionized water is sealed inside the vapor chamber, which is laser-welded into the aluminum chassis to move heat away from the powerful A19 Pro, allowing it to operate at even higher performance levels. The heat is carried into the forged aluminum unibody, where it is distributed evenly through the system, managing power and surface temperatures to deliver incredible performance while remaining comfortable to hold.
