Last year’s batch of “26” OS updates was dominated by the launch of Liquid Glass, Apple’s transparency-themed cross-platform design language. Liquid Glass, sadly, was not universally embraced, with some users finding it confusing or even illegible. And the company eventually had to offer a way to turn off some of its most extreme visual effects.
Apple fans are now starting to think about the 2027 updates that will be announced at WWDC in June and rolled out to the public in the fall, and a small clue to what we can expect was offered in a new report this weekend. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted that in this year’s iOS 27 update, “Apple will be focused on improving the nuts-and-bolts performance of the software.”
In other words, the company will prioritize fixing what’s there rather than adding new things, whether that means new features or interface changes. That should, hopefully, mean fewer bugs and speedier performance for iPhone owners. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard iOS 27 will be more of a maintenance release skin to Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
That’s not to say there won’t be any new features in iOS 27. Apple broadcasts the keynote presentation at the start of WWDC, with the iPhone generally getting the most stage time, and Craig Federighi will need something to talk about. (Although Gurman says this year’s WWDC will be “a fairly muted affair.”) And it looks likely that Siri will be the flagship talking point.
The next version of Siri, offering the contextual capabilities first advertised at WWDC 2024 and based on Google Gemini AI tech, is expected to finally roll out in iOS 26.4 within a matter of weeks. But another Siri update will follow closely on its heels. Gurman says we’ll get our first glimpse of chatbot Siri, codenamed Campos, as part of the iOS 27 announcements at WWDC 2026.
