App Store

On Thursday, Apple updated its App Store rules and fees in the EU, following orders from the bloc’s antitrust regulators to eliminate barriers to directing customers outside the store. Apple announced that developers will incur a 20% processing fee for App Store purchases, with fees as low as 13% for those in Apple’s small-business program.

Stephen Nellis and Foo Yun Chee for Reuters:

Developers who send customers outside the App Store for payment will pay a minimum fee of 5% and at most 15%. Developers will also be able to use as many links as they wish to send users to outside forms of payment.

The changes are aimed at trying to help Apple avoid a 500 million euro ($570 million) fine threatened by EU antitrust regulators in April.

“The European Commission is requiring Apple to make a series of additional changes to the App Store. We disagree with this outcome and plan to appeal,” Apple said in a statement.

MacDailyNews Take: You know, because when you go shopping for a vacuum in Target, the vacuum maker can post stickers all over their vacuum box saying it’s $3 cheaper at Walmart.

The European Union arose because the Europeans couldn’t compete on their own with the rest of the world, so they each lined up to surrender their national sovereignty, unique cultures, and dignity for an undemocratic, opaque, wasteful, bloated, bureaucratic quasi-governmental blob – and, even with the EU’s thumbs all over the scale, they still can’t compete.MacDailyNews, March 4, 2024
