Emergency SOS via Satellite, a feature introduced with the iPhone 14 models, over the weekend saved a hiker who was injured on a trail. As reported by ABC7, Juana Reyes was hiking a remote part of the Trail Canyon Falls in the Angeles National Forest when she suffered an accident. A part of the trail collapsed underneath her, breaking her leg. She had no cellular service, nor did the people who were with her, but she did have an ‌iPhone 14‌. "Thankfully, my phone has that SOS satellite feature I was able to connect to... I'm assuming satellites," she said. The Los Angeles County Fire Department Air Operations Section was able to get to Reyes after receiving a satellite call.…
Illustration by Samar Haddad / The Verge Nothing is more frustrating than buying a new pair of headphones, an OLED TV, or a backpack just to find out that you could have gotten it for a lot cheaper somewhere else. In order to keep customers happy — and prevent them from going elsewhere — many retailers offer price-matching policies where they promise to match a lower price you’ve found elsewhere. That’s information that could come in handy now that we’re just a few weeks out from Amazon Prime Day, which will be taking place on July 11th and July 12th. What follows are the price-matching policies for a variety of major retailers. There are a few things to make note…
Apple has been researching the use of haptics in the Siri Remote that could guide future users silently and invisibly toward content on the device they want to control. If you have an Apple TV set with a Siri Remote, you don't need haptic feedback. Assuming you can find the remote, and you have it facing the right away around, then you just press a button and you know it works when your Apple TV reacts. But sometimes it's less clear that a device has responded to your pressing on a remote control, or tapping on an iPhone app. That may be because of what you're trying to control, such as a speaker that has no visual display. Screenshot by Barbara Krasnoff / The Verge The other day, I was going through a bag full of old tech — I mean, really old tech — trying to convince myself to finally get rid of phones that I hadn’t used for 10 years or so when I came across a battery. One of the batteries that I used to carry around in case my phone ran out of juice. You see, once upon a time, smartphones had replaceable batteries. Instead of having to carry around a portable charger or search desperately for a wall socket so you could charge up your failing phone (assuming you had a power cord with you), you could pull off the back of your…
Macworld Apple’s popular AirPods are most effective when used in conjunction with the company’s other products: their feature set is at its best when working with an iPhone, iPad or Mac. But they can serve as very fine wireless headphones with plenty of other devices, including the Nintendo Switch gaming console. In this article, we explain how to pair a set of Apple AirPods with a Nintendo Switch. It used to be tricky and require an adapter, but following a software update a couple of years back the process is now nice and simple. How to update your Switch (if necessary) The key here is that you need your Switch to be running system firmware version 13.0.0 or later. That…
