Macworld Everyone wants to talk about AI. Most of them don’t know what it is (artificial intelligence), but they still want to talk about it. Who’s got it and who doesn’t. What industries it’s ripe to disrupt. And the one company that’s not in the middle of that conversation is Apple. Viral images generated by Stable Diffusion, and pathological chatbots from OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google are the story of the day. Apple, meanwhile, has nothing. Or perhaps, considering the current state of Siri, less than nothing. Apple’s nowhere when it comes to AI. That’s the narrative. The thing is, it’s not true. At least, not yet. Presenting the Neural Engine It’s hard to imagine that you could portray Apple as…
Macworld As an editor who’s been covering Apple for a long time, I’m often asked by family, friends, and acquaintances about which Mac to buy. I have knowledge and insight that people can tap into conveniently through a conversation, saving someone from hours of research, a task that can be daunting, intimidating, and confusing. When using Google or another search engine, results appear as a list of websites, and then it’s up to you to find the information you need. That could take a lot of time, maybe even several hours. But generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT and Google Bard can possibly cut that time down to a few minutes, akin to the conversations I have. However,…
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge So Apple has restricted the use of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot, The Wall Street Journal reports. ChatGPT has been on the ban list for months, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman adds. It’s not just Apple, but also Samsung and Verizon in the tech world and a who’s who of banks (Bank of America, Citi, Deutsche Bank, Goldman, Wells Fargo, and JPMorgan). This is because of the possibility of confidential data escaping; in any event, ChatGPT’s privacy policy explicitly says your prompts can be used to train its models unless you opt out. The fear of leaks isn’t unfounded: in March, a bug in ChatGPT revealed data from other users. Is there a world where…

Macworld Google wrapped up another I/O keynote and we heard a lot of what we expected to: there are several new Pixel devices, a dig at Apple for not supporting RCS (can’t say we disagree there), and a massive focus on AI. It wasn’t just AI taking the stage at Google’s event, but generative AI. It’s an annoying name but an important distinction. Generative AI is that which creates new stuff, rather than simply analyzing and adjusting what already exists. DALL·E and Stable Diffusion create new artwork from a text prompt, they don’t just tweak the exposure and sharpen up an image you supply. Chatbots such as ChatGPT and Bard answer questions and perform tasks by making new text. There…
