In a reversal of a lower court ruling, Britain’s antitrust regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), has been granted authority by the Court of Appeal to launch a probe of Apple’s Safari mobile browser and Apple Arcade cloud gaming services. The CMA had previously launched an investigation into the dominance of Apple and Alphabet’s Google in mobile browsers last year. Reuters: ‎ Apple argued that the CMA had “no power” to launch such an inquiry because it did so too late and that the probe should have been opened last June at the same time the CMA published a report on mobile ecosystems, which found Apple and Google had an “effective duopoly.” The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) ruled in…
Google has issued a critical security update for Chrome on macOS, Windows, and Linux that fixes a zero-day vulnerability in the browser. On Tuesday, Google in a Chrome stable channel update said it "is aware that an exploit for CVE-2023-6345 exists in the wild." Google has not provided further details about the CVE-2023-6345 exploit, which was discovered last week by security researchers in Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG). However, it is believed to be related to Skia, the open-source 2D graphics library in the Chrome graphics engine. If, for example, you have visited https://www.google.com/travel/flights in the past, just typing in "flights" will see Google bringing that website up as a suggestion to visit. The typo…
Google today announced that it is adding updated generative AI capabilities to its search functionality, with the aim of helping users to "better learn and make sense of information" on the internet. With the Google Search app for Chrome, there is now a beta option to summarize a long article. Chrome is able to provide "key points" from a webpage, along with a "Explore on page" section with questions and answers pulled from the content. Google says that the new "SGE while browsing" feature is meant to help people "more deeply engage" with long-form content from creators. It shows key points on articles freely available on the web, and will not summarize articles that are paywalled. As of now, the…
