Warren Buffett’s conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway has now sold all its TSMC shares in what has been described as an “abrupt” move. Buffett said that while he remained a great admirer of the company, tensions between China and Taiwan were too great to make it a safe investment – highlighting concerns about Apple’s total dependence on the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company for all of its processors … more… The post Warren Buffett sold all TSMC shares over concerns about Taiwan’s stability appeared first on 9to5Mac.
Apple's custom silicon is expected to leap to 3nm, a next-generation manufacturing technique, later this year, but what exactly does the enhanced process mean for the company's next-generation chips? Semiconductor fabrication is the process used to make chips. The "node" of the process is, in simple terms, a measure of the smallest possible dimension used in manufacturing, measured in nanometers (nm). The node of a chip helps to determine its transistor density, as well as its cost, performance, and efficiency. The link to actual physical dimensions has become hazy in recent years as advancements have slowed and marketing has become more important, but it still broadly denotes how advanced the chip technology is. What Nodes Does Apple Use Currently? Apple…
A check signed by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has sold for $106,985, over 400% of the original $25,000 estimate, at RR Auction. RR Auction: Pristine Apple Computer check signed by Steve Jobs in 1976—the year of the company’s founding Choice Apple Computer Company business check, 6 x 3, filled out in type and signed by Jobs, “steven jobs,” payable to Crampton, Remke & Miller, Inc. for $175, July 8, 1976. It looks increasingly likely that major Apple supplier Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) will proceed with a factory in Germany. Adding a third continent would make the world’s biggest chipmaker a truly global enterprise, Tim Culpan writes for Bloomberg News. Tim Culpan for Bloomberg News: A site near Dresden in Germany’s northeast is the leading contender as TSMC negotiates with clients, car manufacturers and governments over incentives and costs. A possible venture with NXP Semiconductors NV, Robert Bosch GmbH and Infineon Technologies AG includes state subsidies and would have a budget of at least €7 billion ($7.7 billion), though presumed to be closer to €11 billion, Bloomberg News reported last week. The Hsinchu-based company said it is still assessing the…
Intel reported first-quarter results on Thursday that showed a staggering 133% annual reduction in earnings per share. Revenue dropped nearly 36% year over year to $11.7 billion. Kif Leswing for CNBC: For the second quarter, Intel expects to lose 4 cents per share on revenue of $12 billion. That forecast is shy of analyst expectations for earnings of 1 cent per share on $11.75 billion in sales, according to Refinitiv. In the first quarter, Intel swung to a net loss of $2.8 billion, or 66 cents per share, from a net profit of $8.1 billion, or $1.98 per share, last year. It’s the fifth consecutive quarter of falling sales for the semiconductor giant and the second consecutive quarter of losses.…
Major Apple supplier TSMC is in talks with partners to spend up to €10 billion ($11 billion) to build a chip fabrication plant in Saxony, Germany, Bloomberg News reports Thursday citing “people familiar with the matter.” Jillian Deutsch and Alberto Nardelli for Bloomberg News: The planned venture between TSMC, NXP Semiconductors NV, Robert Bosch GmbH and Infineon Technologies AG will include state subsidies and would have a budget of at least €7 billion, with the total investment likely closer to €10 billion, the people said, asking not to be identified because the information is private. A final decision has not been made and the plans could still change, they said. TSMC Chairman Mark Liu told shareholders in 2021 that the…
