Apple IDs now support passkeys, but only in betas for iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma. | Illustration: The Verge It appears that passkeys are now supported for Apple IDs, but only if you have the first beta for iOS 17 (or iPadOS 17 or macOS Sonoma). Beta users of Apple’s operating systems then have the ability to sign in anywhere that supports signing in with your Apple ID — covering not only Apple.com and icloud.com, but also anywhere else your Apple account is linked to — sans passwords, using just the biometrics on their iPhone or MacBook and a dream. It works anywhere that supports signing in with your Apple ID. For example, if I want to sign…
Macworld Of all the features coming to macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS this fall, I might be most excited about widgets. No, seriously. Widgets! Yes, of course, widgets have been around forever. Apple overhauled the widget experience with iOS 14 three years ago, giving us a new widget template, widgets on the home screen, and smart stacks. On the iPad, they were relegated to a sidebar, but iPadOS 15 fixed that a year later, letting us put widgets anywhere on the home screen. In macOS Big Sur we could put iPhone-ish widgets in the notification shade off the right side of the screen. But with the OS updates coming this fall, Apple is making some welcome changes that will take…
A ransomware group that hacked into Reddit's servers back in February is threatening to release stolen data if Reddit does not walk back its planned API changes, reports Bleeping Computer (via The Verge). At the time of the hack, no one took credit, but ransomware group BlackCat yesterday said that it was responsible. 80GB of compressed data was stolen through a phishing attack, and BlackCat says that the data will be made public unless Reddit pays $4.5 million and withdraws the API pricing changes that will go into effect on July 1. The group claims to have "interesting confidential data" that includes information on how Reddit tracks users and censors people. BlackCat does not anticipate Reddit cooperating, and says that…
The protest against Reddit's API changes continue, with hackers demanding API cost changes as part of a ransom demand, while subreddits tap the power of John Oliver and Tim Cook.Reddit's management is currently under fire from users over a decision to make developers of apps pay to access the API. The decision, which will make it prohibitive for third-party app developers to continue using the API, has been met with scorn by the Internet at large, and has affected the site in a few ways, including one unexpected source. In February, Reddit admitted to being the victim of hacking, after an employee fell victim to phishing. The breach of Reddit's systems saw approximately 80 gigabytes of compressed data seized by the…
You know the drill, you know that running the macOS Sonoma beta can be risky. If you're going to do it, this is how.One last reminder — you could very easily lose data if you install a beta of macOS, and you could quite easily do more damage still. So if you are going to install, in this case, macOS Sonoma onto a Mac, do it on a spare machine. That said, this year's first developer beta seemed to be more robust and reliable than the beta of macOS Ventura a year ago. Plus a reason for detailing how to install the new beta is that Apple has changed its systems. Read more...
