Smart home accessory company Eve Systems has been updating its range of HomeKit devices with Thread support to improve reliability and connectivity, and the Eve Flare smart light is one of the latest products to get Thread support. The Eve Flare is a product that Eve Systems has had around for years now, and I reviewed it four years ago in 2019. I wanted to see what, if any, difference Thread would make compared to the prior Bluetooth-only connectivity, hence the review update. There have been no notable design changes to the Eve Flare that I can see. The look, size, and functionality are exactly the same as they were in 2019. Eve Flare is a sphere-shaped accent light, and…
Illustration by Samar Haddad / The Verge If you’re looking to trade in your Apple product — be it a MacBook, iMac, Mac desktop, iPhone, or iPad — you stand to get a pretty good return. Apple’s tech has a reputation on the secondhand market for retaining value long after release. This speaks to build quality but mostly to Apple’s long-lasting software support for its older products. The trend is positive both for buyers, who will end up with a product that could continue to work for years, and sellers, who will make a good percentage of their original purchase price back. There are plenty of ways of trading in your old Apple products for cash. You can easily net…
Macworld Even for what is reputedly a somewhat smaller-than-usual annual update, iOS 17 still brings with it a host of new features. As the beta process begins, there’s plenty to investigate and try out ahead of the software’s full release this fall. But as I perused the capabilities that are part of this latest upgrade, something interesting struck me: an older technology appears to be having its moment in the sun, as Apple embraces its utility in a bunch of new ways. That’s great not only because it means new features, but also because–as it’s something that’s been around for a while–those new features will be available on any iPhone that runs iOS 17. I speak, of course, of the…
Macworld Update 6/27/23: Apple has released the developer beta 4 of macOS Ventura 13.5. The public beta 4 will follow later this week. Apple on Tuesday released the macOS Ventura 13.5 beta 4 to developers. The release notes are as follows: Startup Security Utility Known Issues Startup Security Utility in macOS Recovery may not accept an administrator password after updating. This affects Intel Macs with the Apple T2 Security Chip that have the secure boot policy set to “No Security”. To work around this, boot to macOS Recovery and run the resetpassword command from Terminal. Once the password is changed, you can authenticate with the new password in Startup Security Utility. Apple’s latest Mac Pro targets professionals with highly demanding computing workloads. But we talked to those professionals, and they don’t want it — because Apple’s other computers are just too good. Apple’s latest Mac Pro was finally revealed at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference as a machine for the most power user of power users. The video discussed audio engineering, color grading, and video transcoding. Apple’s product page mentions code compiling, animation, compositing 8K scenes, 3D rendering, and “analyzing enormous datasets.” This isn’t just for pros, Apple seems to claim; it’s for capital-P Pros. Exactly who these pros are and why the Mac Pro is the perfect device for them remains somewhat unclear to me, even after testing the new…
