It quickly became a hit with consumers, but it wasn’t immediately clear how it would fit into the enterprise market. At the time, BlackBerry was the dominant player in the corporate world, and it seemed unlikely that the iPhone would be able to unseat it without changing how it worked. Some CEOs were able to…
Macworld Editor’s note: 25 years ago today, Apple revealed the iMac. To commemorate the anniversary, we are reposting this article that originally appeared on the iMac’s tenth anniversary in 2008. The iMac made an instant impression when Apple first unveiled it in May 1998. But it didn’t start to really shake things up until it began to ship, which happened on August 15, 1998. Arguably the most influential desktop computer of the last decade, the original iMac’s specifications seem quaint by today’s standards. For $1,299, you came home with a 233MHz PowerPC G3 processor, 32MB of RAM, a 4GB hard drive, a 15-inch built-in monitor, and stereo speakers, all in an amazingly stylish case. The Bondi Blue wonder heralded the…
Police tracked down two Chicago men accused in connection with an armored truck robbery Tuesday, thanks to the help of an Apple AirTag hidden inside a container of stolen money. Apple’s AirTag Two Brink’s guards were in the parking lot of a Jewel-Osco store for a pickup. They entered the store, and then while one guard used the washroom, the other guard returned to the truck. That’s when Singleton, described as wearing all black and being thin and about 5-foot-6, allegedly approached the guard from behind, pointed a green and silver gun at him and told him not to move, the complaint said. Davis, who is about 6-foot-2 and was wearing light clothing, also was armed, authorities said. He joined…

Even if you don’t care about adware or being used as means to infect users on other platforms, it’s still possible to fall victim to ransomware, or password theft. Accordingly, good antivirus for Mac software will protect your Mac on all of these fronts. It’ll catch malware that’s still spreading or in circulation; block ransomware; protect older systems with out-of-date software from security vulnerabilities; prevent your Mac from acting as a carrier for malware aimed at other operating systems; and keep infected files off of any virtual machines you’re running. As to the question of which Mac antivirus software you should choose,…
Macworld Despite Apple’s objections, the Baltimore Apple Store last year became the first in the country to unionize, and now we’re getting a glimpse into the negotiations for the next contract. Among the proposals by union representatives: higher pay and tips for “a job well done.” According to a Bloomberg report, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers entered into negotiations with Apple this week by submitting its first series of proposals to management. Among the union’s requests are fairly standard proposals: 10 percent pay raises, changes to the company’s vacation policy, bereavement leave, and overtime. But the most controversial inclusion is a new tipping system, which would prompt customers to leave gratuities of 3 percent, 5 percent, or…
