If you’re buying a new iPhone, the next stage after deciding which iPhone to buy is to get a case to keep your device safe when you inevitably drop it. Another good reason to use a case is that when you want to upgrade in a few years’ time you’ll get more money if you trade in an iPhone that’s in good condition.
There are so many different kinds of cases you can buy. Most offer protection for your iPhone, but some are more versatile than others. You can buy cases that double up as wallets, cases that are super thin so they don’t add a load of bulk to your iPhone, and cases that are clear so you can see what color your iPhone is.
Whether you’re looking for a protective case, a clear case, a MagSafe case, a designer case, or a wallet case for your new iPhone, we’re ‘on the case’ to help you find the best.
Below you’ll find details of the best iPhone 14-series cases from some of the best brands in the industry. Most of the cases we’ve listed are available to buy from the manufacturer or Amazon, if you want to get faster shipping with Prime. While we haven’t been able to thoroughly test all these cases, they are from trusted manufacturers who have manufactured cases we have tested in the past.
Do I really need a case for my iPhone?
Apple loves to emphasise the durability of its iPhones. For example, their screens are protected by a Ceramic Shield front, and the latest iPhones are water-resistant to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. But iPhones do get broken–and it is costly to repair them. Read: Apple repairs: price guide and how long repairs take.
You might think you can avoid buying a case if you sign up for AppleCare+, Apple’s insurance policy that costs from $79/£69 for two years depending on your iPhone. If you have an AppleCare+ policy Apple will replace or fix an iPhone that gets broken accidentally–but you’ll still have to pay $29/£25 for screen damage and $99/£79 for other damage. Read: Will Apple replace a broken iPhone? Your rights explained.
With this in mind, our recommendation is clear: get a case!
Updated May 4, 2023 to add: OtterBox Symmetry+ Clear Case, Torras UPRO OStand, OtterBox OtterGrip Symmetry Series, and OtterBox Commuter Case.
Design Case: OtterBox Symmetry+ Clear Case with MagSafe
OtterBox’s Symmetry Series+ cases come with MagSafe magnets to help it snap into place with a MagSafe charger and other MagSafe gadgets. There are all sorts of models available with different designs: the one I was sent had the “Flower Fields” graphic, but there’s a nice Euphoria finish and Vintage Strawberry if you like artistic designs, and a more solid Sun Day (Yellow). There are other designs that cost less in the U.K. (£34.99) but all designs cost the same in the U.S where there are more to choose from, such as RealTree Flamingo Pink and RealTree Blaze Edge
The case is really easy to put on and take off and all buttons are accessible and work as they should. The sides are raised around the screen and lenses to offer protection from bumps and scratches. It’s drop tested to three times the military standard (MIL-STD-810G 516.6).
It is made from synthetic rubber around the edge with a polycarbonate back—it’s made from 50% recycled plastic. It also offers Antimicrobial technology which helps protect the case exterior against common bacteria that cause diseases like E.coli and MSRA. This probably matters more if you are likely to be sharing your phone with people, at the end of the day what’s on your iPhone is probably on your hands anyway. But it’s a nice idea.
It’s nice and light weighing just 0.10lbs / 47.06g and measuring 6.02 x 3.06 x 0.51in / 152.92 x 77.73 x 13.08mm.

Case With Stand: Torras UPRO OStand
Torras’s UPRO OStand case is a lot easier to get on than off as my broken finger nail can attest. Luckily there shouldn’t be any need to remove the case as it allows MagSafe charging (and even includes magnets so that it will click into place and line up with a MagSafe charger).
Once the iPhone is in the case all buttons are accessible. The edges around the screen are raised by 1.5mm, which is not quite as much as we’d like to see. Perhaps that is one reason why many Torras cases come with the option of an included screen protector. There is a raised area around the camera too (2.5mm) which seems a bit more sufficient.
Its tested to the Military Drop Protection standard and the company claims to it can withstand a 10ft drop at up to 26 angles.
The case we were sent is clear, so we can admire the color of our iPhone through it. Terras says that it’s included technology to prevent yellowing, which can be a problem with clear cases. There are also versions in pink, orange, green, and black. The case is light enough to not feel like it’s adding weight to the iPhone.
Our favourite feature of this case its the flip out stand that is disguised as a MagSafe ring. There’s a latch at the bottom of the ring that flips out to make a stand that can be used in portrait or landscape mode. This stand slots into the case itself so it doesn’t add bulk to the case and is completely smooth when in a pocket.

Grip Case: OtterBox OtterGrip Symmetry Series
It was a big struggle to get the OtterGrip Symmetry Series onto my iPhone 14, so I have to admit I was dreading taking it off again (and when I did it really hurt my fingers), but once on, at least in theory, you shouldn’t need to remove it again—these days the only reason to remove a case tends to be to charge via MagSafe and this case snaps into place with MagSafe, so that’s not a concern.
Once in the case all buttons are accessible and work as expected. The important part is how well the case protects the iPhone inside, and the good news is that this case is very protective. It has raised edges to protect both the camera and screen, here it’s more about protection than being slim, so those raised edges jut out a bit—but that will ensure your iPhone screen and camera lenses are safe. In addition to that protection, OtterBox claims to have drop tested this with three times as drops as are required by the military standard (MIL-STD-810G 516.6).
Hopefully you won’t be dropping it in the first place, because the case is also grippy to hold, so you shouldn’t find it slipping out of your hand.
It’s not the lightest or thinnest case we’ve held. Measuring 6.02 x 3.11 x 0.53 / 152.95 x 79.10 x 13.36 mm and weighing 0.11 lbs | 51.26 g.
As is the case with a number of OtterBox cases, this case features antimicrobial technology that protect the case from common bacteria, such as MSRA. It uses silver phosphate glass for this purpose, although the case is made from polycarbonate and synthetic rubber.
We were sent a black/blue model called Blue Storm. It’s one of a collection available in the U.S. that includes various variegated designs like Peaches (Orange), Poppies by the Sea (Blue), as well as the solid colours of Made Me Blush (Pink), Chill Out (Green) and Black options while the U.K. only has the pink, green and black options. We are amused by the creative naming conventions here.
The main selling point of this case is the handy integrated grip feature on the back. It takes a bit of effort to get out, but once it is out you can rotate it and use it to hold your iPhone comfortably and securely—there might even be some ergonomic benefits. We’re not really sure it’s a feature we’d use, but some might find it useful. This grip presses flat so you can still put it in your pocket and use it with MagSafe.
You could also use the grip to prop your iPhone in portrait of landscape, however it is not intended to be used as a stand, OtterBox recommends other cases that have an integrated stand for that purpose, or you could buy a Pop Up MagSafe stand that attaches to the MagSafe magnets to act as a stand and costs $24.95/£20.99.

Dual-Layer Protective Case: OtterBox Commuter
Quite often the most protective cases are heavy and bulky, but OtterBox’s Commuter case for MagSafe is lightweight (0.10lbs/45.67g) and protective – it even has a flap to cover the charging port so that dust and dirt can’t get in. It’s tested to withstand three times as many drops as the military standard (MIL-STD-810G 516.6).
It was pretty easy to get on and of because the case is actually in two parts: a rubber section and a polycarbonate shell (it’s made from 35% recycled plastic) which OtterBox says gives dual layer protection. The combination of rubber and polycarbonate also gives you a secure grip, so it should be less likely to slip from your hand. Like many other OtterBox cases this case is Antimicrobial, which means that the bacteria that causes things like MSRA and E.coli can’t survive on it.
There are raised edges around screen and cameras that are deep enough to offer protection to those parts of your iPhone. It measures 6.03 x 3.11x 0.55in / 153.17 x 79.12 x 13.97mm.
We were loaned a case in a green colour which OtterBox calls Trees Company. The case itself has a sturdy look-it’s not truing to look pretty, but other options include Into The Fuchsia (pink), Don’t be Blue (blue), and Black.
There’s a MagSafe model that comes with magnets built in to help with attaching to a MagSafe charger, but the non-MagSafe model we tested worked ok with MagSafe charging pads despite having no magnets in the case.

Rugged Case: Tech21 Evo Max
Tech21’s Evo Max is designed to protect an iPhone in extreme conditions: it can withstand a drop from 20ft (6.1m), according to the company. It’s made from rugged materials with extra layers of super-strong impact protection. There’s a clip-on holster so you can attach it to a belt, with the clip doubling up as a kickstand for viewing the screen. There’s also a sliding camera cover to keep dust and dirt away from the lenses.

MagSafe Case: Mous Aramid Fibre Phone Case
Mous makes various cases for the whole range of iPhone 14 models. We’ve tried out the MagSafe Compatible Aramid Fibre Phone Case with our iPhone 14. It’s made from trademarked AiroShock material, which the company describes as ultra-rigid material that is high-impact and protective. Unfortunately it’s quite hard to get the case off, but luckily you shouldn’t need to do that.
Being MagSafe compatible means you should be able to connect the full range of MagSafe accessories and get the fastest possible charge. Other cases will probably support MagSafe even if they don’t say so, but buying a compatible case means you know you are getting the best support. On the inside is a microfibre lining that should protect the glass back from scratches.
It’s quite slimline, so it won’t add a load of bulk to your iPhone. The back has a rippled design that is nicely grip able. The edges are raised to protect the screen and there is a rippled grip along the sides. On the back there is a raised section around the camera lenses to protect them.
Our only real criticism is that the buttons feel a bit stiff to use.

Protective Case: Casetify Bounce Case
If you’re looking for a protective case, consider Casetify’s Bounce Case: it’s called that because it’s designed to withstand being dropped. Actually, it’s tested to withstand over 156 drops on all angles and falls from up to 21.3 feet, according to the company. But the protective nature of the case doesn’t mean it’s not fun: Casetify have some lovely unique designs as well as options inspired by Sailor Moon and Harry Potter.
The case includes “Bounce Corners,” which Casetify describes as the result of drop-testing hundreds of smartphones and identifying that a device’s most vulnerable points were located in the four corners. The compression ribs with three air cavities allow for a cushioned contraction and bounce-back in the event of a fall, according to the company. They are constructed from a material called EcoShock that is 40% plant-based and made sustainably, so they have great environmental credentials too.

Clear Case: Mkeke Clear Case
If you spent an age deciding which color iPhone to choose then you won’t want to hide it away in a case. Luckily there are plenty of clear cases around that will protect your iPhone without concealing the color.
We’ve tried out the Mkeke clear case with an iPhone 14. You can also get the same case for the rest of the 14-series—and the case of the iPhone 14 is also compatible with the iPhone 13.
The case protects your iPhone thanks to its raised edges that stop the screen coming into contact with the floor. It’s made from polycarbonate that is easy to grip. It’s reinforced around the edges and has with a smooth back that is raised around the camera lenses to protect them.
While clear, there are a selection of Mkeke cases that comes in a variety of shades including black and a variegated blue, which nicely compliments our blue iPhone 14. The polycarbonate is anti-yellowing, according to Mkeke.
You can also get a MagSafe version, which includes the indicators for lining up your iPhone on the charger, however the standard case will still work with a wireless charger, the plastic won’t impede it from charging. However, if you do need to remove the case you will be glad to hear that doing so is really easy because the polycarbonate is flexible.
